During a visit to Atlanta in 1920, she visited the federal prison where Eugene Debs was held, and presented him with an autographed picture.
The Helen Gardner Studio at Tappan-on-the-Hudson was located on the site where British Major John Andre was held prisoner after his capture at Tarrytown, and also where he was executed.
