The toxicity of patriarchal masculinity has become such a well-worn trope in pop culture (and especially in recent Colombian cinema) that it’s hard to remember its effects continue unabated in streets and households all over the world, and in that Latin American country specifically. And so, while Fabián Hernández’s central concerns in his simply-titled film, “A Man” (“Un Varón”), are all too familiar, his tale of a young man living in a shelter in the center of Bogotá who cannot escape the violence of the world of the streets around him, emerges nonetheless as a powerful portrait of the country’s inescapable machismo.

The thirteenth edition of Santiago International Film Festival, Sanfic (August 20–27, 2017), the largest film festival in Chile, will present more than 100 international and Chilean films, including productions shown and awarded in festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice. Colombia’s tourism department won’t be sanctioning Víctor Gaviria‘s The Animal’s Wife anytime soon and I definitely will never be visiting to see how accurate a depiction of life there it proves. This film is two hours of sadism at the hands of Tito Alexander Gómez Arias‘ Libardo ‘Animal’ Ramírez. He rapes, maims, drinks, and rapes again while every village he inhabits turns a blind eye out of fear of repercussion. If I could jump through the screen, steal his Bowie blade, and slit his throat I would. It wouldn’t be for his prisoner of a fake wife Amparo Gómez (Natalia Polo) either. No, I’d do it for the simple satisfaction of not having to wait for the only ending Gaviria could possibly provide.
What is the message here? That the filmmaker’s homeland is a crime-ridden nightmare where honorable people are labeled cowards and victimized as monsters run amok?...

The Toronto International Film Festival is mere weeks from kicking off, yet the annual fall fest is showing zero sign of slowing down when it comes to announcing the titles that will round out this year’s event. Today’s announcement brings with it a number of Cannes favorites, including Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning “I, Daniel Blake,” Olivier Assayas’ divisive Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Julieta.”

The second Harvard-Gulbenkian program centers around a vitally important yet still under appreciated figure of the post-WW2 Portuguese cinema, the late Paulo Rocha whose influential masterpiece of poetic neo-realism, Mudar de vida (1966) is offered both in tribute to his recent passing and as an occasion to reconsider Rocha's cinema and legacy.
