Thirty-something man-child Abe (Jordan Gelber) clings to his adolescence while stubbornly remaining with his parents Jackie (Christopher Walken) and Phyllis (Mia Farrow). His older brother Richard’s (Justin Bartha) success as a California doctor only feeds Abe’s resentment and rage at his family over his failures. However, when he meets Miranda (Selma Blair), whose personal and professional disasters have sent her scrambling back to the safety of her parents’ suburban home, he sees what he thinks is a chance at true love.

Chicago – Movie theaters have rarely appeared as depressingly airless as they do in Todd Solondz’s “Dark Horse.” Rather than confront his adult responsibilities, pathological man-child Abe (Jordan Gelber) storms into the nearest multiplex for his daily consumption of media-fed inspirational escapism. He quietly mouths the answers to pre-movie questions projected in the otherwise vacant theater, as his words fall on nonexistent ears.
For financially strapped young adults forced to live at home well past their teenage years, Solondz’s latest scathing satire may be a horrifying externalization of their worst nightmares. As a cautionary tale, it is both pitilessly bleak and oddly humanistic. Gelber, an actor best known for starring in the Broadway smash, “Avenue Q,” is so inherently likable that he causes the audience to root for his unfortunate character—not to fulfill his undeserved dreams, but to come to his senses.

The best way to spread holiday cheer, Will Ferrell instructed us in the 2003 movie Elf, is singing loud for all to hear. And what better place to sing than on Broadway? Now the stage musical version of Elf is back on Broadway after a one-year hiatus. And it’s joined by a new stage version of the 1983 yuletide movie fave A Christmas Story (pictured above) — that naturally features a leg-lamp kickline and a tap-dancing fantasy number called “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out.” Both shows opened this week for limited runs, and here are excerpts of our reviews (as well...

Pier Paolo Pasolini’S Trilogy Of Life (Criterion) Pier Paolo Pasolini was Italy’s last Neo-Realist, a product of post-ww II Europe who was fervently Catholic, openly gay, defiantly Marxist, and one of the most original voices of the 20th century’s second half. Before his brutal murder in 1975 (after the premiere of his still-controversial swan song, “Salo”), Pasolini directed a trilogy of films based on masterpieces of medieval literature: Boccaccio’s “The Decameron,” Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” and “The Thousand and One Nights (also known as “The Arabian Nights”). The three films celebrate the uninhibited, earthy, raw carnal nature of the original texts, leaving little to the imagination, but also offering Pasolini’s own very unique and pointed views on modern society, consumerism, religious and sexual mores (and hypocrisies), and an unexpurgated celebration of the human body, both male and female. Extraordinary production design by Dante Ferretti and another evocative,...

★★☆☆☆ Writer/director Todd Solondz returns after a brief 3-year hiatus with Dark Horse (2011) - a film that takes a darkly droll approach into exploring the darker side of human behaviour. The film centres on Abe (Jordan Gelber), a socially awkward, overweight and toy collector thirty-something who lives in the confines of his parents' house (Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow) and works for his father's real estate firm.

It’s Monday, so we all know what that means! Yes, it’s time for another rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s a jam-packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, September 24th 2012.
Pick(S) Of The Week
The Raid (DVD/Blu-ray)
Deep in the heart of one of Jakarta’s most deprived slums stands an impenetrable high-rise apartment block. To most it is 30 floors of Hell to be avoided at all costs but for many of the city’s most dangerous killers and gangsters, including the area’s most notorious crime lord, it is a fortress-like safe house protecting them from the law. Even for the bravest and most experienced police officers it is considered a no-go area.

"Today is going to be the perfect day" , chimes the soundtrack to Todd Solondz's latest film, Dark Horse. Such upbeat opening scenes are uncharacteristic of Solondz's work, yet Dark Horse's misleadings begin with an energetic wedding party scene complete with revellers sync-dancing. His previous work, Life During Wartime, was a semi-sequel to Happiness; and his earlier film, Palindromes, challenged viewers with multiple actors playing the lead. Dark Horse is certainly more accessible viewing for non-Solondz followers, but its melancholy opening is merely the calm before the storm.
Two thirty-somethings stuck in adolescence meet at a wedding - she's clearly miserable and unimpressed by Abe, and he fails to take the hint when she gives him her work number. Although she lives a three-hour drive away and is clearly apathetic, Abe still attempts to start a relationship with Miranda, and viewers are left to watch the forming of this bizarre bond.

Dark Horse
Stars: Jordan Gelber, Selma Blair, Christopher Walken, Mia Farrow, Justin Bartha, Donna Murphy | Written and Directed by Todd Solondz
Dark Horse is a short, strange little film that’s likely to get swallowed up by the blockbusters of the summer. This is a shame as whilst far from a perfect picture, it’s well worth taking the time to bask in its peculiar glory. Brought to the screen by cult writer-director Todd Solondz, Dark Horse begins with a brilliant opening scene in which a party of wedding guests dance joyously to some upbeat popular music. The camera pans around to a table where two invitees remain seated, at odds with the rest of the room. They are Abe and Miranda, a couple of strange, damaged people with whom we are about to spend eighty-five minutes.

Todd Solondz Dark Horse: dark center, bright periphery. (Photo: Jordan Gelber, Selma Blair.) Whether or not you’ll appreciate writer-director Todd Solondz’s tragicomedy Dark Horse, which starts a one-week run today at the Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood, depends on whether or not you can empathize with the plight of its lead character. If you see Abe (Jordan Gelber) as a tragic victim of fate (his looks, his parents, his job, his taste in women, his scratched toys), you may get into his story. On the other hand, if you — like me — see Abe as a boorish, obnoxious, self-centered grown man trapped in [...]...

The rotund underachiever at the center of Todd Solondz’s new film Dark Horse is Abe (Jordan Gelber), a 40-ish man-child still living in the bedroom of his parent’s (Mia Farrow and Christopher Walken) home and in the shadow of his doctor brother (Justin Bartha). Abe passes most days at his father’s office avoiding work while trolling eBay for action figures to add to his collection. At a wedding, he meets Miranda (Selma Blair), a beautiful but depressed writer and convinces her to go out with him, after which he immediately proposes. She accepts but gives him hepatitis which puts him in a semi-coma, leading to odd dreams about a cougar co-worker (Donna Murphy).

Todd Solondz is the master of suburban angst, but for me his films run hot and cold. When he’s hot, as in the recent Life During Wartime, he has an uncanny ability to find both absurdist comedy and poignant drama in the vicissitudes of everyday characters. When he’s cold, as in Palindromes, he can be positively off-putting. Dark Horse falls somewhere in between, which is frustrating because the movie shows so much promise. New York-based actor Jordan Gelber, who appeared in the original Broadway cast of Avenue Q, seems to be channeling Jackie Gleason (or perhaps Kevin James) as a blustery, overweight 30-something loser who still lives with his parents and blames...

Director: Todd Solondz Starring: Jordan Gelber, Selma Blair, Mia Farrow, Christopher Walken Abe (Jordan Gelber) is essentially all of Hollywood's stereotypes of losers rolled into one: overweight, balding, collector of action figures, 35-years-old and resides with his parents (Mia Farrow and Christopher Walken), works for his father (but seems utterly incapable of actually doing any work), drives a yellow Hummer, and listens to nothing but cheesy bubblegum pop. He is an overgrown brat who is prone to lashing out at everyone around him and blaming his family for his arrested development.
