The Enfield Poltergeist, directed by Jerry Rothwell, is a montage of the supernatural, science, childhood trauma, and many other aspects. This mini-documentary series pulls lightly at the strings of horror while focusing more on the scientific aspects. The events surrounding the Hodgson family and the experiences that they have had have been explored here. The intervention of Maurice Grosse, a member of the Society for Psychical Research (Spr), between 1977 and 1978 with more than 200 hours of tape recordings has been highlighted. The four-part mini-documentary series brings out a real-life infamous case of the haunting at a house in Enfield, reminding us of similar movies based on real-life stories like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Amityville Horror, and others. Was Maurice able to rid the Hodgsons of the torture of the poltergeist? Was Janice really possessed, or was she faking things to garner attention? Let us look into what several witnesses...

Film centres on a spoon bending boy in 1970s Italy.
Rome-based sales company True Colours has boarded The Properties of Metals, the debut feature of Italian director Antonio Bigini which is screening in the Berlinale’s Generation Kplus section.
Set in 1970s Italy, the film is the story of a twelve-year old boy who astounds locals by appearing to bend metal simply through the power of his mind.
The film is inspired by real events in the 1970s, when various youngsters in Europe started bending keys and spoons without touching them, following performances by Israeli illusionist Uri Geller. The kids,...

From 1978 until her retirement in 2013, Nanci Griffith, who died August 13th at age 68, included numerous cover songs in her repertoire from writers as diverse as Nick Lowe and Paul Carrack (“Battlefield”) to Guy Clark (“Desperados Waiting for a Train”) and Julie Gold, whose “From a Distance” had been roundly rejected until Griffith became the first to record it. She even once covered the Rolling Stones’ “No Expectations” on Austin City Limits.

From Harry Houdini to David Blaine, magicians have never ceased to hold audiences enraptured, turn the impossible into possible and spark the pervading question: “How did they do that?” The latter—however—is not solely a part of spectator speculation after a performance. A magician like the late James Randi utilized his craft to demonstrate how charlatans such as Uri Geller, Peter Popoff, and James Hydrick successfully duped individuals into believing they possessed psychic powers.

“We are very sad to say that James Randi passed away yesterday, due to age-related causes,” the James Randi Educational Foundation said in a statement. “He had an Amazing life. We will miss him.”
Born in Toronto, Canada, he became interested in magic as a kid. By the 1940s, he launched his career as an illusionist and escape artist.

James Randi, a magician whose many TV appearances led him to a second career as a respected paranormal investigator, has died at 92. The James Randi Foundation confirmed his death in a tweet on Tuesday, saying he died of “age-related causes.”
Born Randall James Zwinge in 1928, he entered show business as a teenager, touring with a carnival and working nightclubs in his native Toronto, Canada. Initially billed as The Great Randall: Telepath, he parlayed that name into a mind-reading act and a knack for predicting the future.
Unlike many magicians and performers, Randi was not averse to letting fans know that he was a trickster, relying on subterfuge and slight of hand to pull off his tricks. As his career grew, adding escape artist to his bag of stunts, he grew increasingly worried about the people who refused to embrace the fact that it was all an act.

Jessica Jones Season 3 introduces the mysterious Erik, a new love interest. And yes, he has a Marvel Comics history.
This article contains extraordinarily mild Jessica Jones Season 3 spoilers. We have a spoiler free review here if you prefer.
Erik Gelden. Wiseass. Small time gambler. Petty criminal. Burger expert. Supervillain?
Well, not exactly. But Jessica Jones' new love interest with some low level mental superpowers actually has his roots in the pages of Marvel Comics. Erik was a small-timer known as Mind-Wave, a little known Daredevil villain who has a, shall we say, very strange history. Mind-Wave was created by Marv Wolfman, Bob Brown, and Jim Mooney and first appeared in Daredevil #133 (1976). Real name Erik/Mind-Wave used a helmet of his own creation to enhance his innate Esp abilities. The helmet allowed him to hear the thoughts of those around him and allows the villain to predict the action of anyone he battles.

Apparently, *Nsync's name is truly magical. You may have paused at least once in life to ponder how to spell the '90s and '00s boy band's name, which has been depicted in several ways. Is there an apostrophe in it? Or is it a star? Where does it go? Are you supposed to write in all caps? Why Are You Yelling? Well, on the group's official album covers, the name appears as "*Nsync," with a graphic of an actual star. But why is it there? You can thank Israeli-born, London-based celebrity illusionist and psychic Uri Geller, who had long taken credit for the star. Geller, a friend of the late Michael Jackson, rose to fame due to his mental...

Marvel and Netflix have been fleshing out Luke Cage‘s cast a lot lately, but now, a surprising addition has been made to the second season of Daredevil. The show is currently shooting in New York City, and while we’ve yet to hear anything about Bullseye (a role that Jason Statham was at one point rumoured to be in the running for), notable characters added to the series have so far included Elodie Yung’s Elektra and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher.
Unlike those two, Blake Tower probably isn’t a name anywhere near as instantly familiar. He’ll be played by Stephen Rider (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), and is described as a District Attorney for New York City who helps Charlie Cox’s Daredevil – a lawyer in his civilian identity as Matt Murdock – with information to help track down and capture criminals. That pretty much matches...

There are more things in heaven and earth, than are dreamt of in our philosophy, for sure. We live in a mysterious world and all sorts of unexplained things happen every day… or do they?
There are a few things these days that science has managed to partially, if not entirely, lift the veil on. Seeing as the basic job description of a scientist is to unravel the mysteries of the universe (a pretty cool job description in anyone’s book), it is unsurprising that they have so far managed to de-mystify a fair few tales of the strange and the unexpected.
Perhaps there’s a little less magic in the world now, but there are also fewer evil demons that want to wear you like a pretty frock – which is possibly a good thing.
Despite what the likes of Derek Acorah and Uri Geller might tell you,...

Chicago – Magician James Randi, or “The Amazing Randi,” has a made a legacy in using his love of magic to show audiences how they’re being tricked by evangelists, spoon-benders, psychics, etc. A ruthlessly charming Houdini-wannabe with instant showman charisma, he exists as the humbling gravity to a world that can convince itself that unattainable answers are to be found in ideas beyond science.
When someone claims that they’re able to talk to spirits from over 35,000 years ago, or can push a pen with extreme focus and the wave of their hand, Randi shows up at the scene, and throws down with logic at his side. It often happens on the stage of talk shows, whether it’s Johnny Carson or Larry King, and it’s glorious. He never loses. In a world where a sucker is indeed born every minute, he’s a hero as much as he is a necessity.

Mr. and Mrs. Robin Williams are slow dancing. The time: a winter afternoon. The place: a photographer's studio in the Chelsea section of New York. The music: high-decibel funk. Everybody else in the studio is abuzz — adjusting lights, fussing with props, running back and forth from the kitchen with sushi. Still, Williams and his wife, Marsha, keep coming together in these quick, sweet tableaux. It's strange to see the thirty-nine-year-old actor and comedian with his guard down...

Skeptic and former stage magician James "The Amazing" Randi has been challenging pseudoscience and supernatural claims for decades. He's a professional debunker, but many people have actually accused Randi of concealing perceived psychic powers during his debunking demonstrations. Randi has re-created the spoon-bending antics of famed psychokinesis guru Uri Geller using simple magic tricks, which led to a major lawsuit. And that wasn't his first legal battle. Randi's story is revealed in the documentary An Honest Liar, which refers to his work as a magician, but also a secret he kept hidden for years. Randi also happens to be gay (he didn't come out until the age of 81). The documentary explores his internal struggle as a man who is in the business of...

Research for my film about the spoon-bender's 40-year career as a secret psychic operative turned up some unlikely facts
With the news of America's National Security Agency's massive electronic surveillance operations dominating the headlines right now, the documentary film I've just made for the BBC about spoon-bender Uri Geller's long and secret career as a psychic operative is timely in ways I never expected.
My journey, as I searched for corroboration of the rumours (and the heavy hints dropped by Geller himself) about his services to the intelligence communities of three continents, took me into a strange alternative reality, populated with men (always men) from the CIA, the FBI, Nasa, Britain's Ministry of Defence, and yes, the Nsa that everyone's talking about this week. (I'll say nothing of Mossad, though Israel's legendary intelligence agency kept cropping up.)
As I crossed the Us with my crew, from New York to California via Florida and Texas,...

Generally speaking, bad guys are bad guys because they want to do bad things and get away with them, so if you see one get caught in the middle of a movie it usually means they've got an ace up their sleeve. Lately we've been seeing this trend of the bad guy getting caught on purpose (capture, interrogation, threat, destruction, escape) in big tentpole blockbusters, and either every copy of Final Draft has a glitch that automatically pastes that into a script … or folks are getting lazy.
Seeing as how it's used once again in "Star Trek Into Darkness," let's cite five recent examples of this cliché in the hopes that we can declare a moratorium on it ... at least until it counts as nostalgia.

As the documentary festival enters its 20th year with a record number of film submissions, Daniel Dylan Wray guides you through the programme and events
Last year's festival featured a surprise performance by the star of a film that would go on to win an Oscar, so you would think the organisers of 2013's Sheffield Doc/Fest would be feeling the pressure just one month from curtains-up.
But the festival's programmer, Hussain Currimbhoy, seems relatively calm on deadline day for the event's 20th anniversary programme. "It's pressure every year," he says. "We pressure ourselves to make it the best programme every year and the best festival every year".
That task is made harder by the festival's swelling attendance and growing film submissions, which this year topped 2,000 for the first time. These are whittled down to just 120 (including crossover platforms and shorts); only 80 of these will make it through as feature films.

London (AP) — Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew; British singer-songwriter James Blunt; and Israeli television psychic Uri Geller are among the latest to strike a deal with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. over phone hacking.
The three were among 17 hacking victims who settled Friday with News Corp. subsidiary News Group Newspapers over its campaign of illegal espionage, which set off a massive scandal when it was revealed in July 2011.
Others on the list include actor Hugh Grant — whose settlement was first announced in December — as well as "Doctor Who" actor Christopher Ecclestone, former government minister Geoffrey Robinson, TV presenter Jeff Brazier and singer Kerry Katona.
Murdoch's News of the World tabloid was at the center of the scandal. Prosecutors say the paper's senior management conspired to hack hundreds of victims' phones, including senior government ministers, sports stars, Hollywood royalty, and even crime victims in a bid to win scoops and boost sales.

Karina Wilson caught up with director Rodrigo Cortés and star Cillian Murphy to talk about stage psychics and their new parapsychology movie (out this Friday) Red Lights...
“What can you really know? What can you really trust? What are your doubts? What are your certainties? What do you call truth? When you look at the sky, what do you see? Shadows? Reflections? Distant echoes? You see the moon as it was more than a second ago. You see the sun as it was shining eight minutes ago. But what do you really see? Can you trust your eyes? Can you trust me?” – Simon Silver in Red Lights

Rodrigo Cortes has never seen "127 Hours." Cortes, director of the Sundance entry "Red Lights," has somehow steered clear of Danny Boyle's hallucinogenic depiction of a hiker (played by James Franco) whose arm gets stuck under a rock for almost the whole movie. This despite the fact that "127 Hours" was widely compared to Cortes' own "Buried," about a man (Ryan Reynolds) who spends the whole movie stuck in an underground coffin. Two years ago, "Buried" was a darling of Sundance, but it disappeared during awards season even as "127 Hours" went on to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Perhaps there's a reason that Cortes still hasn't seen "127 Hours." The director returned to Sundance this year with "Red Lights," featuring Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy as scientists who debunk local paranormal activity with the help of a student, portrayed by last year's Sundance darling, Elizabeth Olsen. I still haven’t quite figured out what the deal is with Darren Lynn Bousman. He directed a couple of Saw sequels and made a really crummy horror musical. I will give him a little credit for Repo! The Genetic Opera because though it may not be great, I appreciate that he went out and did what he wanted to do.
For a while now Bousman has been working on 11-11-11 which plays up Uri Geller's examples of 11:11 phenomenon and plays off the idea that there are folks in the world who are constantly running into 11:11 prompts that, apparently, suggest that you've got some world saving hidden talents. It’s all a little shady but Bousman has figured this is as good a premise as any for his upcoming film which adds in the extra 11 for a stronger supernatural twist.

"2012" worked wonders at the box-office, so why not make a movie titled "11 11 11?" Apparently, there's a numerological phenomenon about 11:11, where (Wiki):
Numerologists believe that events linked to the time 11:11 appear more often than chance or coincidence.[1] This belief is related to the concept of synchronicity.[2] Other authors believe it is an auspicious sign,[3] and others that it signals a spirit presence.[4][5] The belief that it has mystical powers has been adopted by believers in New Age philosophies.[6] However, skeptics say that Uri Geller's examples of 11:11 phenomenon in world events are examples of post-hoc reasoning[7] and confirmation bias.[8]
Now, "Saw" director (he directed numerous "Saw" films), Darren Lyn Bousman (pictured above) is partnering with producer Wayne Rice for the film according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Angelina Jolie is reportedly upset about a new unauthorised book about her, and Jonathan Margolis, author of several celeb biographies, is beginning to see why
There can't be many people who feel a pang of empathy for Angelina Jolie, who, along with her PR team, is reportedly upset about an unauthorised biography of her by Andrew Morton.
The assiduous Morton's book, apparently pieced together from interviews with unnamed sources – oh, and Jolie's childhood nanny – is a veritable juice-a-thon. In it, so it's being said in the States, we learn that Jolie once had a fling with Leonardo DiCaprio, that she was raised for two years by nannies in a Los Angeles serviced apartment, and that she has a tattoo on her bottom in honour of her former husband, Billy Bob Thornton, written in the helvetica font.

Unreality TV have discovered that Britain’s Got Talent hopeful Hayashi was dropped by a Dutch TV channel in 2009, after he allegedly sent lewd MySpace messages to a teenage fan.
The English teacher scared the pants off Simon Cowell on a recent audition show, as he attempted to perform what he claimed was one of the most dangerous acts ever seen on British television. (Video Here)
The amazing samurai sword act previously led Hayashi to finish in second place on the 2008 series of The Uri Geller Show, broadcast by Sbs 6 in the Netherlands.
His success on this and a subsequent season, led to a judging spot on the show in 2010, but Sbs dropped the star in December last year after a worried mother complained that Hayashi had been sending her teenage daughter sexual online messages. Bosses reportedly admitted that they were not entirely satisfied with Hayashi’s explanation of the...

James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but he is perhaps best known as the world's most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.
Randi has pursued "psychic" spoonbenders, exposed the dirty tricks of faith healers, investigated homeopathic water "with a memory," and generally been a thorn in the sides of those who try to pull the wool over the public's eyes in the name of the supernatural. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a MacArthur "genius" grant in 1986. He's the author of numerous books, including The Truth About Uri Geller, The Faith Healers, Flim-Flam!, and An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural. Randi also came out earlier this year. In 1996, the James Randi Education Foundation was established to further Randi's work. Randi's long-standing challenge to psychics now stands as a $1,000,000 prize administered by the Foundation.

Michael Jackson reportedly kept a list of 'enemies' - one of whom was his supposed former friend Uri Geller, according to a new claim. The King of Pop's former manager Dieter Wiesner said the "paranoid" star had a list of people who he believed were set against him, Contactmusic reports. Wiesner revealed that he had originally written the document after Jackson demanded the list be circulated among his closest associates in order to 'protect' him. The German talent promoter told Entertainment Tonight: "Sometimes he was a little bit paranoid. "I'd ask him, 'Michael, what are you doing?' He said, 'These people are after me'." The list allegedly included ex-magician Geller along with another former friend, Rabbi Schmuley Boteach. Geller and Jackson initially fell out in 2002 after Geller introduced (more)...

Michael Jackson has reportedly been laid to rest.
The King Of Pop is believed to have been interred in a mausoleum owned by his close friend, Motown mogul Berry Gordy, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills on Thursday.
Family members, including Jackson's dad Joe and sister La Toya, were present at the secret ceremony, reports Britain's Daily Star.
The final farewell took place just hours after Jackson's brain was returned to the clan, following the organ's removal by coroners for testing to determine the cause of death.
A source tells the newspaper, "After Michael's high-profile funeral, the family were desperate to say goodbye privately and away from the cameras. His mother Katherine in particular was very uncomfortable with his body being in pieces due to the autopsies and wanted him laid to rest as soon as they were allowed.
"Within hours of the brain being returned, Michael was placed in the crypt. There was a casual ceremony with around 20 close friends and family.
"There were no prayers said, no speeches, everyone just reflected silently on their personal memories of Michael."
And former friend of Jackson's, Uri Geller, has indicated that the reports are true.
He tells British morning show GMTV, "As far as I understand he has (been buried), but rumours are flying constantly non stop."
Jackson died on 25 June after suffering a cardiac arrest. His family staged a private ceremony at the Forest Lawn funeral home before celebrating his life at a televised star-studded event at the Staples Center in L.A. last month.

Michael Jackson's former chauffeur Al Bowman claims the King of Pop, who passed away on June 25 after experiencing cardiac arrest, was terrified of dying so he wanted to clone himself to extend his superstar legacy. He grabbed Uri by both arms and told him, 'I really want to do it Uri and I don't care how much it costs.'"
The conference was held by Clonaid, the scientific arm of the Raelian movement, a bizarre sect that believes cloning is the key to eternal life.
