ABC Family is bringing back the scares for the 14th year in a row with their 13 Nights of Halloween. This has become a staple of my October screening, and there are a lot of great inclusions this year. It may seem a bit repetitive, and you may feel like Tim Burton has taken over, but you don’t want to miss out on some of these offerings – especially Coraline – and it’s a fun mix.
Check out the full line-up below, and mark your calendars.
ABC Family scares up 13 Nights Of Halloween for the 14th consecutive spine tingling year, with programming filled with chills and thrills as you countdown to Halloween. The popular programming event, starting Friday, October 19, and concluding on Wednesday, October 31, features a brand new episode of “Pretty Little Liars” featuring special guest “glampire” Adam Lambert, and the season finale of “Switched at Birth.” The stunt will also...

Michael Fassbender, Shame Generally a mid-December event, the New York Film Critics Circle will announce its 2011 winners in late November — today, Nov. 29, to be exact. Who will win? Well, who knows… But let's take a guess. Or rather, a few guesses. The process of elimination technique: Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar and Steven Spielberg's The War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn have no chance of winning for Best Film or — in the case of Tintin — Best Animated Feature. Not among the New York critics. Can't imagine Gotham Award winner Felicity Jones taking home the Best Actress award for Drake Doremus' Like Crazy, which won the hearts and minds of Sundance jury members, but generally hasn't received great reviews elsewhere. Mike Mills' Beginners is another Gotham Award winner that doesn't have much of a chance in the Best Film category. And I'd...

Carey Mulligan, Michael Fassbender, Shame Shame, Michael Fassbender, the Oscars: The Academy vs. Nc-17 Movies One thing that bears remembering when it comes to the Academy Award nominations is that thanks to the preferential voting system in place, it is perfectly possible — in fact, it's perfectly likely — for an individual or a movie to be shortlisted even if only a relatively small minority votes for it. That is, as long as the minority in question is a very enthusiastic minority — listing the individual/movie in first or second place — and one that comprises, say, about 20% or so of Academy members. In other words, if about one in five Academy members list Michael Fassbender and/or Carey Mulligan in either first or second place — even if the other 80% abhor Shame and/or their performances — either one or both will be in. Another Oscar possibility for Shame lies in the Best Original...

Michael Fassbender, Shame Steve McQueen's Shame, a look at a man suffering from what some refer to as "sex addiction," has been screwed with an Nc-17 rating by the censors at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). That means no one under 17 is allowed to watch Shame at a movie theater in the United States. Shame is thus joining an illustrious — and at times not all that illustrious — list of Nc-17 movies, including Ang Lee's Lust, Caution; Phillip Kaufman's Henry & June; Pedro Almodóvar's Bad Education (gay sex is always a big no-no for teens); and, er, Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls. [Nc-17 Movies and the Oscars.] As a result of the MPAA's decision, which can seriously dampen a film's box-office performance, outrage has poured out on Twitter and other social media. But really, wasn't the MPAA's Nc-17 rating exactly what everyone had been expecting from those torture-porn aficionados who freak out at the sight of a dangling penis?...

HBO has renewed In Treatment for a third season after closing a deal with lead shrink Gabriel Byrne. But that's not the big news. No, the big news is that actor-turned-writer Dan Futterman and his TV producer-wife Anya Epstein (Tell Me You Love Me) have taken over as co-showrunners. Production on the drama will resume in early 2010 with the third season slated to premiere later in the year. Casting is underway for Byrne's new crop of patients. As always, referrals are greatly appreciated. Photo Credit: Abbot Genser/HBO...

Television Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – Quick - What’s the best show on television right now? “Lost” has its fans but I think that show’s taken a slight dip in the new season, as has the increasingly too silly “30 Rock”. People love “Burn Notice,” “Big Love,” and “Damages,” but they’re done for the year. After Sunday, there is one clear answer. The best show on television is HBO’s “In Treatment”.
HBO has adjusted the broadcast schedule for “In Treatment,” combining the five sessions that were broadcast during separate nights into two evenings a week for season two. I’m still not sure of the best way to deliver a program that requires as hefty a commitment as “In Treatment,” but I’m not sure this is the right solution. 90 minutes of therapy on a Monday night seems like a large hill for viewers to climb after the start of their work week.
