The sports movie has always held the power to uplift and reinvigorate, with some of the best examples regularly cited as many people's favorite films. Combine that power with a true story of hope despite struggle and a cast of talented actors, and you have a recipe for magic. Producer Frank Cottrell-Boyce first had the idea for The Beautiful Game - a movie about the soccer (or football) Homeless World Cup back in 2012. After many years of pushing, which included an iteration with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson attached, Bill Nighy was announced to star in 2021. Now three years later, the film is just around the corner, with a recent trailer release and positive reviews on the festival circuit suggesting it isn't one you will want to miss. So, with all that in mind, here is everything we know about The Beautiful Game so far.

Harry Potter characters like Tonks, Lucius, Sirius and Dobby enter the world of Attack on Titan in a new batch of AI images. The Harry Potter franchise would work in animation because many of its themes are universal, and not dependent on medium. An animated take on the franchise would be exciting due to the increased stylization that could be used during spell-casting and wizard duels.
Harry Potter crosses over with Attack on Titan in a new batch of AI images. Released in 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone introduces audiences to Daniel Radcliffe's Harry, Rupert Grint's Ron, and Emma Watson's Hermione, kickstarting a franchise that now includes eight installments in the main saga. The upcoming Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will be “mostly a jukebox musical,” featuring at least 15 covers of popular songs, according to a new report.
Directed by Todd Philips and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux is due in October 2024, and though we’ve known it would be a musical since 2022, this is the first we’ve heard about the specifics of the songs. According to Variety, its “insiders privy to filming and early versions” who’ve confirmed the film’s “mostly jukebox” status.
Among the 15 covers will be the Judy Garland standard from The Band Wagon, “That’s Entertainment!” There is, too, the opportunity for “an original song (or two) to be added to the final version,” though details on who would compose or sing those numbers remain unknown.
Worth noting, though, is that Hildur Guðnadóttir, composer for 2019’s original Joker, is said to have...

‘Joker’ (2019) was initially supposed to be a standalone film with no sequels. But Warner Bros. had bigger plans; they wanted it to kick off DC Black, a series of darker, more experimental movies separate from the DC Extended Universe. Director Todd Phillips showed interest in making a sequel despite the original plan. By November 2019, the sequel was officially in development. In 2023, Gunn confirmed that ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ wouldn’t be part of the mainline Dcu; instead, it would be released under the ‘Elseworlds’ label, aligning with Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ franchise.
In the early stages of development, it was revealed that ‘Joker 2’ would be a musical—a bold decision, in my opinion. However, the fanbase had mixed reactions to this news. Now, industry insiders speaking to Variety provide details on the number of songs viewers can anticipate in the movie.

The upcoming film ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ will mostly be “a jukebox musical”.
The film is set to have at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs.
One of the songs is said to be ‘That’s Entertainment’ from the 1953 musical ‘The Band Wagon’, reports ‘Variety’.
However, there is a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version. Details regarding who would pen the tracks, or sing the numbers are unknown.
According to sources, Hildur Guonadottir, the Oscar-winning composer of the first ‘Joker’ film, is said to “infuse her distinctive, haunting (music) cues” into each number. Warner Bros declined to comment.
As per ‘Variety’, Jukebox musicals, known for featuring popular songs, often achieve box office success. Examples include ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Moulin Rouge’, the latter receiving eight Oscar nominations.

When it was revealed that Joker: Folie à Deux would have elements of a musical, fans weren’t quite sure how far the sequel would lean into that aspect. Well, according to Variety, the film will be “mostly a jukebox musical” as it will include “at least 15 reinterpretations of very well-known songs.“
Insiders tell Variety that one of those songs is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon. While it seems that most of the songs will be covers of existing tunes, the door is apparently open for the addition of an original song or two. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we have a conversation about what it means to be underappreciated. Not underrated necessarily. But underappreciated. And, boy, is Don Cheadle underappreciated. The Oscar-nominated actor has been elevating films in supporting roles since the late ‘80s.
Our guest today is Mitchell Beaupre, senior editor at Letterboxd.
Our B-Sides today include: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Traitor, The Guard, and No Sudden Move. There is also a brief-but-worthwhile tangent on the Scott Caan-directed (!) indie The Dog Problem. Also the Sundance darling Manic from the early 2000s.
We discuss Cheadle’s incredible ability to listen as an actor. There may not be a better active listener working today. We offer some context into legend Steve Martin (who...

Arthur Fleck will return in Joker: Folie à Deux with a new ensemble in the sequel to the successful 2019 Joker film. Phoenix reprises his role as Joker, along with newcomer Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Supporting cast members include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland in unknown roles for the new movie.
Arthur Fleck will return in Joker: Folie à Deux, and he will bring with him a whole new ensemble. Todd Phillips's 2019 movie Joker became one of 2019's biggest movies, earning over $1 billion worldwide, with Phoenix's performance as Fleck being particularly well-received. It's certainly a non-traditional DC movie with its lack of superheroes, but it clearly struck a chord with audiences.

St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate Irish culture, history, and of course, to have a bit of fun! To those unfamiliar, March 17th marks the traditional death date of St. Patrick (Ireland’s patron saint). It used to be a religious day to remember him and how Christianity spread in Ireland.

Iraq War veteran Jay Dorleus takes issue with how an Iraqi sniper is portrayed in 2010's Green Zone. The movie marks the third collaboration between Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass after The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Green Zone was a disappointment both critically and commercially.
Green Zone, a 2010 war movie starring Matt Damon, fails to impress an Iraq War veteran. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the filmmaker responsible for all the Damon Bourne movies except for the first, Green Zone follows Damon's Chief Warrant Office Roy Miller as he goes rogue in Iraq to investigate faulty intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction (Wmd) in the region. The film, which also stars Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson, and Jason Isaacs, earned mixed reviews from critics and was a major flop at the box office.
In a recent video for Insider, Iraq War veteran Jay Dorleus analyzes Green Zone and assesses the film for its realism.

As the new DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran prepares to reboot and relaunch the DC cinematic universe beginning with Superman: Legacy next year, this year is a relatively quiet year for DC. Compared to recent years that have consistently seen the release of anywhere between two and four major DC movies, the major comic-book publisher only has one feature film set to release this year. That film is Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the standalone Joker film from 2019, which was directed by Todd Philips and starred Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.

All of McDonagh’s films will be screened at the festival, including his two Venice film festival best screenplay winners: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees Of Inisherin.
Starting his career as a playwright, McDonagh later moved into cinema with short film Six Shooter, which won an Oscar and set the tone for his subsequent works, which are known for dark humour, witty dialogues and escalating absurdity. His debut feature, In Bruges, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as Irish hitmen, premiered at Sundance Film Festival.
After moving to Hollywood, McDonagh made crime drama Seven Psychopaths, in which a writer’s block is transformed into grim comedy; and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which won Frances McDormand a Best Actress Oscar. His most recent film The Banshees Of Inisherin,...

For the past six years in a row, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor has gone to men with more than 35 minutes of screen time in their respective films. Although four of last year’s nominees could have bucked that trend, the academy chose to keep things consistent by honoring Ke Huy Quan’s especially lengthy performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” By appearing in a whopping 58 minutes and 33 seconds (or 42.03%) of the Best Picture winner, he more than comfortably surpassed his category’s screen time average and came within nine minutes of outpacing every previous supporting male victor.
Quan’s performance is the second longest in his film, as he and his Best Actress-winning on-screen wife, Michelle Yeoh, are separated by 36 minutes and 43 seconds (or 26.35%). Directly below him is Stephanie Hsu – who earned a supporting bid as his character’s daughter – at 42:18 (30.36%). Considering all 87 featured male turns that have merited Academy Awards,...

Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker was a great character study of one of the most beloved supervillains/antiheroes of the DC lore. After the overwhelming love for the character’s portrayal by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, Phoenix took on the impossible task of reinventing the character. Alienating itself from the DC universe also added to its focused narrative.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck is about to laugh all the way to the bank as reports about the budget for Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux are accurate. In a new article from Variety, the outlet says the budget for Joker 2 is a staggering $200 million! In contrast, the original film’s budget was $60 million. Small in scope and execution, Joker kept its story street-level, focusing on the increasing madness of Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and his influential rise in Gotham City. Phillips’ Joker 2 is a musical, which I would assume calls for elaborate sets, fancy costumes, and immense musical numbers with choreography to compliment the carnage.
Variety’s report says Phoenix is getting $20 million to reprise his role as the struggling comedian turned psychopath. At the same time, Lady Gaga, who plays Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Harley Quinn) in the film, will sing her heart out for $12 million.

When The Tragedy of Macbeth was released in 2021, there was some cause for concern. After 18 films, including such classics as Raising Arizona, Fargo, and The Big Lebowski, Joel Coen, for the first time, offered audiences a movie that did not feature the involvement of his younger brother, Ethan Coen. However, Joel Coen’s sole directing credit wasn’t a first for the filmmaker.
From his debut, 1984's Blood Simple, through 2003's Intolerable Cruelty, Joel Coen was credited as director, but it was understood that the films were equal collaborations with his sibling, who had co-written, and produced all the projects as well. Ethan Coen is also listed as the uncredited director of each film on IMDb. In fact, it wasn't until 2004's The Ladykillers that both brothers were credited equally.
But the 2021 Shakespeare adaptation, which contained a tour de force performance from Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth, was the first truly solo Joel Coen production.

Multiple interpretations of the Joker exist side-by-side and are all considered valid in the DC Comics universe, according to DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn. Canon should not be the sole focus when evaluating the greatness of a story, as some of the best DC stories are not considered canon. Fans of the Joker can expect to see three different versions of the iconic villain on-screen in the coming years, including Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal in the upcoming sequel to Joker and Barry Keoghan's anticipated debut in Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel.
The Joker has been reimagined more than any other villain in the history of DC Comics. Since making his debut in 1940, the clown prince of Gotham City has been depicted as everything from a happy-go-lucky jester to a hideously disfigured mass-murderer, and he has even been transformed into completely other forms such as lizards. However, all of these forms,...

Sundance dealmaking was buoyant, the awards season is coming to a head with a number of critically acclaimed movies having done well at the box office, and apparently peak TV is over. Whisper it quietly, but after years of movies being almost a dirty word compared to the lustre of TV, is independent theatrical film staging a comeback?
If the turbocharged and upbeat European Film Market (EFM) — which officially got underway today in Berlin, but has been in swing for a while — is anything to go by, the indie sales and production sectors are in decent health, at least.
Things were looking up even before the market. A week ago we broke news of the biggest North American deal in years for an indie movie when Paramount stumped up around $25M for Michael Gracey’s Better Man with a big theatrical commitment. “That gives you hope,” one movie financier texted at the time.

The one-man Joker: Folie À Deux promotional machine that is co-writer/director Todd Phillips marches onwards. He used Valentine's Day as an excuse to post some brand new, romantic images of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn (or at least a version of her in Phillips' tweaked mythology). Have a scroll through the pics from Phillips' Instagram here:
Though the actual plot line for the movie remains a tightly guarded secret, we do know it'll pick up with Arthur still languishing in Arkham Asylum after the violent, chaotic events of the 2019 film. And that's presumably where he meets Harley, who in usual Batman/Joker lore is his ride-or-die (and partner in crime). Also in the cast for this one is a returning Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, plus Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Jacob Lofland.

Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin is, by far, one of the most heartfelt movies in recent years. Whether you consider it a comedy or believe it to be a tragedy through and through, there's no denying that every single scene in The Banshees of Inisherin is ridden with emotional sincerity and the purest, most intimate form of pain. A treaty about loneliness, death, small towns, and Irish political disputes, the film stars Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell as two friends whose relationship is destroyed when one of them just decides, for no apparent reason, to stop talking to the other. It's a simple, albeit slightly absurd premise that is turned into a beautiful piece of cinematic art by McDonagh's writing and directing, as well as by Gleeson and Farrell's acting skills. However, the true heart of the film, the one thing that really makes it tick, lies elsewhere.

Cillian Murphy revealed that when he landed his breakthrough role in “28 Days Later,” the actor didn’t consider it a zombie movie. Murphy, a first-time Oscar nominee for his work in “Oppenheimer,” discussed the 2002 hit film at a taping of SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Conversations program. In the nearly 90-minute conversation, recorded in December, Murphy talks about his lengthy career on stage and screen. That includes working with director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland on the film, in which he plays a man who wakes from a coma 28 days after a rage-inducing virus has caused society to break down.
“I wasn’t too aware we were making a zombie movie, to be honest with you,” Murphy noted, adding he hadn’t seen any of George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” series. “It was right around the time Sars happened and there was all this ‘air rage’ stuff going on.

Among the various distinctions “Everything Everywhere All at Once” incurred by winning seven awards at the 95th Oscars was becoming the first film in a dozen years (and ninth overall) to conquer both supporting acting categories. This rare occurrence involved Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis preventing their respective “The Banshees of Inisherin” competitors from accomplishing the same goal, as the sets of featured nominees from “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” had both failed to do one year earlier. Now, two more pairs of cast mates – who happen to hail from the two highest-grossing live action movies of 2023 – are gunning for entry into this exclusive club.

In 2002, audiences were captivated by the British horror film 28 Days Later by director Danny Boyle. Made on a budget of $8 million, the movie was a breakout global hit, grossing $85 million worldwide, and redefined the zombie genre for the 21st century. Five years later, a sequel was released, 28 Weeks Later, with Boyle producing and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. 28 Weeks Later ended on a major cliffhanger, hinting at a third film, which many started calling 28 Months Later. Now, almost 17 years after the release of the previous film, the third movie has finally been announced with a new name: 28 Years Later.
