Summer is right around the corner. The most significant indicator of this for horror fans isn’t in the increasingly warmer weather and longer days but in the arrival of new shark horror.
This week brings megalodon terror in The Black Demon, kicking off a summer of aquatic terror that also includes Meg 2: The Trench and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The latter of which proves that aquatic horror doesn’t solely belong to sharks.
This week’s streaming picks highlight the various terrors that lurk in various bodies of water, from ghosts to Lovecraftian nightmares. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

IndieWire asked Larry Fessenden, actor/producer/filmmaker and founder of indie production outfit Glass Eye Pix to remember fellow filmmaker and long-time playwright Stuart Gordon, best known for his trademark horror offerings “Re-Animator,” “Dagon,” and “From Beyond.” On Tuesday, Gordon died at at age 72.
Like many horror fans of my generation, I saw “Re-Animator” in the theater on the big screen. It was a revelation, so bold and sassy and that Barbara Crampton, whew! The practical effects had such exuberance (talking severed head in a medical tray anyone?) you could sense his history in experimental theater by the way he staged gore gags. “Re-Animator” put filmmaker Stuart Gordon squarely in the company of iconic horror auteurs John Carpenter and George Romero, and it began his life-long affinity for H.P. Lovecraft adaptations. His follow-up film was another Lovecraft story, “From Beyond” and it did not disappoint. Gordon would go on to...

No filmmaker has been more successful at bringing the work of H.P. Lovecraft to the screen than Stuart Gordon, and perhaps no Stuart Gordon film is more successful at adapting Lovecraft than 2001’s Dagon. It may not be as focused and entertaining as Re-Animator, the first Lovecraft adaptation from Gordon and screenwriter Dennis Paoli, nor is it as wild and colorfully gory as their second, From Beyond, but Dagon gets at the spirit of Lovecraft more faithfully than their more popular and better-known efforts. It may just be the most Lovecraftian movie ever made.
Adapted from Lovecraft’s 1931 novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth, Dagon casts Ezra Godden as Paul, a stockbroker vacationing in Spain with his girlfriend (Birgit Bofarull) and some friends, when a storm hits and destroys their boat. Paul and his girlfriend are brought to a small fishing village called Imboca, and, while searching for the rest of their missing party,...

When last we left this Masters of Horror rewatch, I was lamenting the fact that a number of the episodes in the Showtime anthology series don’t feel like they really represent their namesake filmmakers accurately. The series premiere, “Incident On and Off a Mountain Road” is a great hour of television and one of my favorite episodes of the series while not really feeling like a Don Coscarelli film. Based on my memory of the show, I thought this was a sound thesis and one I would see proven out over the course of this rewatch. Then along comes “Dreams in the Witch House”—only the second episode of Masters of Horror —to blow my whole theory out of the water. This is a Stuart Gordon-directed episode that feels very much like a Stuart Gordon film.

The heat thuds in the chest, the pulse races and the blood surges. We are not in the midst of a suspenseful and terrifying horror film where our emotions are being manipulated by the puppeteer filmmaker. We are preparing to speak with Master of Horror Stuart Gordon whose 1985 masterpiece Re-Animator has received an all new limited home entertainment release. Whilst Gordon has left the world of horror cinema to return to the theatre, he took us back into the past, to trace the journey of a child who grew into a master of genre.
Not far removed from any discussion involving Stuart Gordon is the King of the B’s Roger Corman. The former is to H.P. Lovecraft what the latter was to Edgar Allan Poe. During the span of just four short years beginning in 1960 with The Fall of the House of Usher, Corman directed his eight film Poe cycle,...

Horror remakes are definitely the hot new trend in Hollywood and I had no idea just how many remakes were being planned until I sat down and drew up a list of as many as I could find. I stopped at 7 pages and needless to say it seems that just about every movie you can imagine is getting a remake-prequel or reboot into 3D.
Here is a pretty complete list of upcoming horror remakes as of today in alphabetical order. Note: There are a few on this list that are only in the early phases of discussion and in some cases I included franchise reboots as well.
13 Tzameti: Starting the list off 13 Tzameti is more thriller then horror but still worthy of making the list. The film which started filming in New York awhile back will star Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham. The original film is a tale of Russian roulette with gruesome outcomes.

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Horror fans have suffered in recent years, either shelling out 10 bucks to sit through another unnecessary sequel to a dying franchise (Jason X, Halloween: Resurrection), or spending half of that to watch another unnecessary sequel in a franchise that never should have been (Children Of The Corn, Witchcraft) on video. But in this time of sequels and fodder, the team behind the cult hit Re-animator--producer Brian Yuzna, writer Dennis Paoli and director Stuart Gordon--has returned with another H.P. Lovecraft tale, Dagon. While not as memorable or outrageous as the former film, Dagon still manages to deliver enough shocks and laughs to please both die-hard Lovecraft buffs and those looking beyond titles with numbers after them.

Yes, in case you were wondering, they really are remaking Stuart Gordon’s ’80s horror flick “Re-Animator” as previously reported, and no, Jeffrey Combs won’t be reprising his role as mad scientist Doctor Herbert West. Instead, the remake will go the “younger” route (as all remakes do), and besides starring Ezra Godden in the lead, Elisha Cuthbert has also been added to the cast as Godden’s girlfriend. Lucky bastard. Horror-movies.ca has your reanimated news: Producers Brian Yuzna (the original Re-Animator) and Ray Haboush (The Last House of the Left) have confirmed in an exclusive interview to the spanish magazine ‘Fotogramas’ that they are going ahead with the remake of Re-Animator. The remake will be shot entirely in Spain and will start as early as next summer! Yuzna also confirms that this is not a new chapter in the Re-Animator saga, but a remake of the first one...

Well, boys and girls, it looks like we now know who the new Herbert West is going to be. But first things first.
According to HorrorMovies.ca (but unconfirmed): "Producers Brian Yuzna (the original Re-Animator) and Ray Haboush (The Last House of the Left) have confirmed in an exclusive interview [with] Spanish magazine 'Fotogramas' that they are going ahead with the remake of Re-Animator. The remake will be shot entirely in Spain and will start as early as next summer!"
Other details include the news that what we'll be seeing isn't a "new chapter" but rather a true remake of the original, and yes, Jeffrey Combs will have a small part. So, if Jeffrey isn't reprising the role of Dr. West, who can we expect to see don the white lab coat? None other than Ezra Godden, whose name might not be all that familiar but surely the face is.

NEW YORK -- ABC.com launched its first shortform original series Monday titled "Voicemail", a series of videos chronicling a decade of a twentysomethings' phone messages.
"Voicemail", inspired by the saved voicemail messages of co-creator Michael Wilde, is based on a 2005 film of the same name that he wrote and directed. During the 30 ABC.com-produced video shorts, which run from one to four minutes, a voicemail message plays in the background while actor Ezra Godden, playing Mike, acts along to it.
In the short titled "Airport", Mike is sleeping in his bed as messages from his increasingly irritated father, who is waiting for him at the airport with his sick grandmother, play in the background. The final frame sees a frantic Mike rushing down the stairs wearing only a bathrobe and underwear. Other episodes focus on breakups, re-gifting and side effects from prescription medications.
"The creative approach for 'Voicemail' aligns perfectly with the digital media audience," said Bruce Gersh, senior vp business development at ABC Entertainment.
