Sunny Day Real Estate just announced a 30th anniversary tour for their seminal debut album Diary, and the emo heroes are keeping up the excitement with the release of “Novum Vetus,” their first new song in 10 years.
Though “Novum Vetus” is “new,” its origins go way back to just after the Diary era, having first been conceived of while Sunny Day Real Estate were recording 1998’s How It Feels to Be Something On. Original members Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner, and William Goldsmith decided to bring the song into Seattle’s renowned London Bridge Studio, fleshing it out into a seven-minute epic with Greg Suran and Chris Jordan.
While in the studio, Sunny Day Real Estate also laid down a live, track-by-track re-recording of Diary, which is out May 3rd. Pre-orders are now ongoing. For now, stream “Novum Vetus” below.

“How about we do a song with one of my favourite drummers in the world?” Dave Grohl told the audience before performing the tune. “Ladies and gentlemen, Shane Hawkins!”
As per People, the band was originally expected to play in the music festival in 2022 with Hawkins, but they dropped out when he died unexpectedly at age 50 in March of that year.

Foo Fighters will learn to fly again as a band, announcing over the weekend that they have found an official replacement for late drummer Taylor Hawkins in prolific snare smasher Josh Freese.
The Foo Fighters unveiled Freese as their new drummer in a typically humorous video over the weekend as part of their live stream event, Preparing Music for Concerts. The video starts off with a (nearly) full band chat, which gets constantly interrupted by cameo appearances from the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee and Tool’s Danny Carey. Tired of the nonsense, Freese requests that the band–including lead singer Dave Grohl, guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel–you know, play some songs. Agreeing, the Foos rip into “All My Life.”

Assertion, the new band from veteran indie-rock drummer William Goldsmith, have released a new song, “Supervised Suffering,” from their upcoming debut album, Intermission.
“Supervised Suffering” is a sprawling track that moves effortlessly from simmering verses to explosive choruses. “Justice is broken, burn down your system its time,” bellows guitarist/singer Justin Tamminga, “You can’t contain us, nothing will keep me away.”
Goldsmith, who was a founding member of Sunny Day Real Estate, the Fire Theft, and Foo Fighters, announced the formation of Assertion earlier this month. The project marks...

Foo Fighters are teaming up with footwear brand Vans, on a new limited-edition sneaker to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their self-titled debut album. The new collaboration re-works Vans’ iconic Sk8-Hi silhouette with Foo Fighters-inspired graphics, and comes as the band prepares to released their tenth studio album, Medicine at Midnight.

Fancy some graphic novels that don't involve a Marvel or DC hero? Try some of these...
You don't need to tell comic book and graphic novel fans that there's a whole lot more than superheroes out there. However, if you're just starting to dabble, might we make a few recommendations...?
Sweet Tooth
Put Mad Max in some plaid, make him feel a little Wolverine circa X-Men: Origins, add some creepy Wes Anderson stop-motion animals, and you’ll get Sweet Tooth, the post-apocalyptic story of human-animal hybrids in rural Nebraska. You may be familiar with Jeff Lemire’s other work on Animal Man and Green Lantern, or his acclaimed graphic novel Essex County, but for me, Sweet Tooth really is something special. Running from 2009 to 2013, this forty-issue arc centres around Gus, a young boy with antlers living with his strictly religious father in a world infected by some sort of plague.

The Foo Fighters were a band born from two other bands – Nirvana and Sunny Day Real Estate. On a national stage they went through the growing pains other bands go through in their garage before they arrive with the heavy expectations they had. Foo Fighters: Back and Forth by Academy Award-winning documentarian James Moll (The Last Days) is useful in tracing the history of one of the most legendary contemporary rock bands, one often considered the token “rock band” on MTV for much of the Boy Band era of the late 90’s.
Following the band’s history, Moll restricts the focus to the former and present Foos themselves. Moll has been granted enough access to yield an effective documentary with a focus on the personalities creating some great music. Founder Dave Grohl is particularly frank on the subject of the past including fall-outs between former Foos William Goldsmith and Franz Stahl,...

Seattle emo legends Sunny Day Real Estate just announced that they will be heading out on a reunion tour this fall. It will be the band’s first series of shows since 2000 (when they recorded and toured as the Fire Theft) and the first featuring the original lineup since 1998. You probably know Sunny Day Real Estate more from what the band members did after they left the group: Bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith were the first rhythm section for Foo Fighters (Mendel remains a member of that band), guitarist Dan Hoerner has worked with Dashboard Confessional and frontman Jeremy Enigk has had minor success as a solo artist.
The band’s tour will launch on September 17 in Vancouver. They also plan on reissuing their first two albums, the influential Diary and LP2, and the shows plan on drawing mostly from those albums. Those reissues, featuring new liner notes,...

The march of the '90s band reunions continues, this time with a band that is re-reuniting. Sunny Day Real Estate, considered one of the seminal bands in the emo genre, is regrouping with all four original members and are going on tour this fall. On Sept. 15, Sub Pop will be reissuing the band's debut "Diary" (1994) and "LP2" (1995), the latter of which was released even after the band broke up for the first time, due to internal conflicts. Drummer William Goldsmith and bassist Nate Mendel were tapped to play in Foo Fighters and frontman Jeremy Enigk started off his...
