- A.P. began his professional film career as an editor. He edited his own feature, Clay Farmers, as well as two documentary films for the Names Project: The Inaugural Display of the Quilt; and the ACE Award nominee, We Bring a Quilt. He has also edited the Golden Apple award-winning documentary directed by Kevin White, Not All Parents Are Straight.
- A.P. is now a professor emeritus at UCLA. He was awarded UCLA's prestigious Distinguished Teaching Award in 2003. He was also Vice Chair of the Department of Film and Television as well as Head of Production from 2003 to 2005.
- A.P. Gonzalez is a member of The Directors Guild of America. He is actively involved on numerous committees, serving 6 years as the co-chair of the DGA's Latino Committee.
- In October 2005, A.P. was named among the top 100 influential Latinos in the country by Hispanic Business Magazine.
- A.P. was nominated for the Rockefeller Media Arts Fellowship in 2007.
