A24 will be giving Civil War, the latest film from Alex Garland, the director of Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, and Men, a theatrical release on April 12th – and with that release date just a couple months away, a new trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
The screenplay Garland wrote for Civil War digs into what happens when 19 states secede from the United States, with factions forming in the West and Florida. Meanwhile, the President says the conflict will be dealt with swiftly, but are things already impossible to control? While some choose to engage with the catastrophe head-on, others prefer to pretend like it’s not happening right outside their door. As the President sends the American military out to “resolve” matters in the West, people are left to despair as the world burns around them. Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst’s...

The trailer for Alex Garland’s Civil War dropped late last year to a mix of reactions. Fans of Garland didn’t know what to make heads or tails out of the project since the epic scope lends itself to more of a big-budget blockbuster action film. Despite the filmmaker not being known for partaking in Michael Bay-style action, the imagery of the war sequences shown in the trailer promotes a kind of action fare that gives off the impression it could be a “one for them” type of movie, especially since A24 has shown interest in getting involved in franchise films. On the other hand, the subject matter is heavy enough and the 28 Days Later filmmaker has been known for making apocalyptic films with an enormous sense of dread.

Exclusive: A24 is taking an opportunity with a blank spot on the calendar for a wide release, April 12, and moving its Alex Garland movie Civil War to that weekend.
The action film, about a near-fractured America balanced on a razor’s edge, was originally set to go on April 26, but now A24 will have access to Imax auditoriums on its new date. The movie starring Kirsten Dunst also moves away from a weekend that had the Zendaya-starring tennis dramedy Challengers from Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate’s Unsung Hero.
Civil War also stars Wagner Moura (Narcos), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Stephen Henderson (Dune), Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina), Jesse Plemons (Power of the Dog) and Nick Offerman (The Last of Us).
A24 produced the film alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Gregory Goodman.
Garland received an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for Ex Machina, which also won an Academy Award for Visual Effects.

You won’t have to battle your bladder to watch A24’s upcoming action epic “Civil War.”
The Alex Garland movie, set in the near future as the United States breaks out into violent conflict, has a runtime of 109 minutes, despite reports to the contrary. While IMDb incorrectly lists a runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes, A24 confirmed to Variety that the film is under two hours long.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, the movie puts viewers in the heat of a new American civil war. The trailer opens with scenes of destruction across the country, along with news reports that “19 states have seceded.”
“Citizens of America, the so-called Western forces of Texas and California have suffered a very great defeat at the hands of the United States military,” Offerman, who portrays the U.S. President, says in the trailer.

Universal has won in an auction and competitive situation the rights to a planned adaptation of Stephen King’s latest book “Fairy Tale” from director Paul Greengrass, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Greengrass last month optioned the rights to “Fairy Tale” and is both developing the feature and will also write the script, direct and produce. Greg Goodman will also produce.
“Fairy Tale” is a dark fantasy novel from the master of horror as published by Scribner in September, and it follows a 17-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a terrifying world where good and evil are at war. The stakes could not be higher – for that world or ours – as he journeys into the mythic roots of human story telling, according to the official logline.

Stephen King remains a hot commodity in Hollywood.
Universal has won a bidding war for the rights to the frightmaster’s latest tome, Fairy Tale, with Paul Greengrass attached to direct, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Greengrass, best known for his grounded Jason Bourne thrillers, will produce the adaptation with Greg Goodman.
Published in early September by Scribner, the book combines fantasy with coming-of-age themes to tell the story of a 17-year-old boy who discovers a portal to another world. Soon enough, the teen, accompanied by a very special dog, finds himself on a perilous adventure featuring deserted castles, child-eating giants, and as usual with King, unspeakable evil.
Universal’s acquisition puts the studio back in business with Greengrass, for which he made three of the four Bourne movies, as well as the acclaimed 9-11 drama United 93, Green Zone and News of the World.

Exclusive: How’s this for a powerhouse pairing? Paul Greengrass will adapt, direct and produce a feature adaptation of Fairy Tale, the bestselling novel by Stephen King that Scribner just published.
King is a fan of Greengrass’s films and has granted him the option — at the usual 1 against a healthy backend — for an epic tale that follows a 17-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a terrifying world where good and evil are at war. The stakes could not be higher, for that world and ours, as he journeys into the mythic roots of human storytelling. It is the world creation that King so excels at.
From what I’ve heard, the property will be shopped imminently, and I expect there to be no shortage of bidders as studios and streamers look for branded titles with global theatrical tentpole potential, especially in the skilled hands of a filmmaker like Greengrass.

After directing the heady FX sci-fi series “Devs,” Alex Garland returns to the realm of auteur horror with his latest film, “Men.” It stars newly minted Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”) in a role that sounds eerily similar to the woman she played in Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”: She’s on a sort of nightmarish vacation trip in the countryside, where something haunting is swirling around in her present, and it has to do with men. Exclusive: When Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass began working on News of the World, he said he set out to create a family movie with purpose and edge. However, he didn’t expect the film’s touching on pandemics and a politically divided country to strike such a chord with current events.
“It was sort of eerie and uncanny,” Greengrass told Deadline. “All you can do is embrace that.”
Based on Paulette Jiles’ 2016 novel, Universal’s News of the World follows beaten-down Confederate soldier Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) as he seeks to promote unity and positivity after the the Civil War. He travels from one Texas town to another reading newspaper stories to residents looking for light amid the country’s post-war divide.
However, Kidd’s storytelling tour is halted when he comes across a 10-year-old named Cicada, whose life has consisted of one horror after the next, including...

Exclusive: While there has been question about big movies holding their theatrical release dates around the holidays in this Covid-19 moment, Universal’s News of the World is solidifying a plan to release theatrically in the U.S., while getting its international release through Netflix. Deadline hears that the Paul Greengrass-directed period drama that stars Tom Hanks is making a deal to have its overseas distribution handled through Netflix, which has done this on some other pictures but not on one this large.
The deal is being sewn up as we speak, and this will be good news for theaters in the U.S. as the picture launches its way into Oscar season. The picture will be release on PVOD as early as 17 days following its theatrical release on December 25. It will continue to hold screens. This is possible because of Uni’s deal with AMC, which allows for a hybrid model.

Earlier in the week, a Trailer dropped for News of the World, a longtime presumed Oscar frontrunner for this year. Starring Tom Hanks, he reunites with filmmaker Paul Greengrass for a movie that seems to check all of the Academy Award boxes. Period piece? Check. Big star? Check. Timely aspects? Check. It all lines up for something voters may not be able to resist. However, it had been a bit of a mystery, until now. At the end of this post, you can of course see the Trailer, but first, why don’t we learn a little bit more about the flick? The film is a drama with a Western vibe. This is the official long log-line from Universal Pictures: “This Christmas, Universal Pictures is proud to present Tom Hanks starring in News of the World, a moving story written and directed by Paul Greengrass, reuniting for the first...

Paul Greengrass is directing the film, reuniting with Hanks for the first time since 2013’s “Captain Phillips.”
“News of the World” is based on the best-selling novel by Paulette Jiles and set in the days following the Civil War. Newcomer Helena Zengel has been tapped to star opposite Tom Hanks in Paul Greengrass’ upcoming “News of the World,” sources tell Variety.
“News of the World” is based on the best-selling 2016 novel by Paulette Jiles, which is set in the days following the Civil War. It charts the unlikely friendship between Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), an early precursor to today’s newscasters, and the 10-year-old girl (Zengel) he is tasked with bringing to her relatives.
The historical drama was originally set up at Fox 2000, but following the recent Disney-Fox merger, the film was let go. Universal quickly acquired the rights and fast-tracked the film into pre-production.
Luke Davies penned the first draft of the script, with Greengrass writing a more recent version. Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce the film through Playtone with Gregory Goodman and Gail Mutrux through her Pretty Pictures. Production is expected to start later this year.

Paul Greengrass’ News of the World has found its child lead in 11-year-old German actress Helena Zengel.
Zengel will play the young girl who is escorted by Tom Hanks’ Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd to her aunt and uncle in San Antonio after she’s rescued from the Kiowa Indian tribe who kidnapped her and killed her family four years earlier. The story is set days before the Civil War. Hanks’ Kidd travels from town to town to read the news to locals who would otherwise not know what is going on in the world. In the book, Zengel’s character is an ornery youngster who didn’t want to be rescued and brought to her relatives. Together the duo face the inhospitable frontier.
Zengel most recently starred in System Crasher, a film by Nora Fingscheidt that will represent Germany as the official submission for the 92nd Oscar in the category Best International Feature Film.

Exclusive: In the first project that has come unglued from Fox since the Disney acquisition, Universal Pictures has picked up rights to The News of The World, an adaptation of the Paulette Jiles novel that is re-teaming Captain Phillips’ director Paul Greengrass and star Tom Hanks.
