3Rd Update, Monday, 5:28 Pm: Most of the major studios have not reported their Monday actuals, as is customary due to the holidays. Warner Bros, Sony and Relativity are still off this week, which means Rentrak won’t issue a final report until January 5. What we do know, though, is that Disney’s Into The Woods beat Universal’s Unbroken by the hair of its chinny-chin-chin over the Christmas Week frame.
Some distribs marveled yesterday why Into The Woods, a PG film, didn’t beat Unbroken, which is largely adult-driven. Woods wound up posting a better Sunday thanks to matinees of $8.2M vs. Unbroken‘s $7.5M. Nonetheless, both films have driven a ton of biz to the year-end box office, with each exceeding $46M in their four-day openings. Rentrak currently sees the total weekend at $208.9M, still up 6% over last year’s comparable frame of $196.9M. The 2014 B.O. is at $10.22B,...

At least one of the two American aid workers who were infected with the Ebola virus will be discharged Thursday from an Atlanta hospital, a spokeswoman for the aid group he was working for said. Meanwhile, Emory University Hospital planned to hold a news conference Thursday morning to discuss both patients' discharge. Alison Geist, a spokeswoman for Samaritan's Purse, told the Associated Press she did not know the exact time Dr. Kent Brantly would be released but confirmed it would happen Thursday. Meanwhile, Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse, said in a statement that Brantly has recovered. "Today I join...

Mark Ruffalo almost didn’t take the part in The Normal Heart, but not for the reasons that one might think of a Hollywood actor. Meet the new gays of Awkward, ABC’s This Week devotes religion segment to gay bashers, Denis O’Hare to square off with Jessica Lange in Ahs:Freak Show
A gay man reflects on his own reaction to the Alan Carr PETA fairy advertisement. “This is how I could have justified my instinctive flinch. When gay people appear on TV, it is invariably as one-dimensional, caricatured camp clowns, a kind of gay minstrel show. But Carr has never claimed to be emblematic of gay men. Of course we should see a wider spectrum of gay men – including, say, the beer-swilling, football-obsessed lad alongside the body-pumping Kylie-loving scene queen – but why does that mean discriminating against a funny comedian because he’s outrageously camp? What fuelled the backlash was a sense that the likes of Carr invite homophobia with their loud-and-proud campness, and all gay men suffer as a result. It is complicity with oppression,...

Stripper robbery, our complicated relationship with porn stars, Jimmy Kimmel asks if people have ever had a threesome
An armed thief tried to steal the costumes for the sexy male revue Thunder From Down Under, firing a .357 at a dancer but missing. The other dancers quickly subdued him, giving him a black eye before authorities arrived. This begs several questions. Why try to steal stripper wardrobes? Is there a market? Is attacking massive muscular men ever smart? How do you get a .357 into a casino?
The House is taking a break from trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act and not voting on Enda to try and pass a bill that would strip the office of the president from creating new national parks without the approval of Congress…and environmental studies. So they want more environmental studies on the creation of national parklands than they do on the Keystone Pipeline.

In a meeting with religious leaders that was ostensibly about gun control, Joe Biden agreed with Reverend Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham and leading beacon of morality and decency) that sure, there’s no legal reason that violent video games couldn’t have a slightly higher rate of tax on them, which would of course go to victims of gun crime (unlike, say, a tax on guns).
The questionable logic of making already violent people pay more for their violent video games, or restricting access to them altogether while allowing them to keep their cache of guns aside, presents a major of issue with the Reverend’s suggestion. The First Amendment (the predecessor to the Second Amendment, so arguably more important) guarantees the right to freedom of speech, which violent media falls under. Not moral speech, or right speech, or correct speech – free speech. The problems that arise whenever...

Rev. Franklin Graham on Wednesday suggested that movies and video games depicting violence should be subject to extra taxation.
“How much violence as a nation are we willing to accept?” Graham asked Wednesday, according to the Rock Hill Herald. “We tax cigarettes, we can tax violence.”
Graham's comments came during a break from a disaster relief training session for his group Samaritan's Purse. He also suggested that more gun laws would not solve problems of violence inflicted by those weapons, instead claiming that current measures needed to be better enforced.
Last month, however, Graham did come out in favor of universal background checks for gun purchases. A measure to expand background checks later failed in the Senate.

Earlier in the week, Rev. Franklin Graham went on Morning Joe and made some troubling comments about President Obama and his maybe-kinda-sorta Islamic tendencies. These were problematic for obvious reasons, but the Fox News Watch panel this afternoon gave him some benefit of the doubt for not having come on the program to talk politics, but to talk about persecution of Christians abroad. Nonetheless, they noted his tendency to "twist religion to suit his politics," one they discouraged.

The Rev. Franklin Graham's appearance on Tuesday’s Morning Joe is a fine example of created-for-cable "news." Graham, son of revered teleevangelist Billy Graham, spent the morning in a logic-free attack on President Obama‘s faith, which was then shopped to the White House for phase two, and which has now progressed to the Last Word phase. In this case, MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell attempts to bring down the curtain on Graham's absurd attacks in Tuesday night's "Rewrite" segment.

Graham, son of revered teleevangelist Billy Graham, spent the morning in a logic-free attack on President Obama's faith, and at today's White House briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney summarily dismissed it.

With the great evangelist in his twilight, his children are jostling over his image and the family name. In this week's Newsweek, Lisa Miller reports on the younger Grahams' politics, infighting-and efforts to protect their father from the press.
Billy Graham was upstairs, napping. In the kitchen of the mountaintop home where he and his wife, Ruth, raised their five children, the table was set for lunch. Except for a flickering candle on that table and the exuberant pacing of two large dogs named China and Lars, the house was still, as empty as a museum after hours. The walls-witness to so many squabbles and pranks, prayers and hymns, private conversations with would-be presidents, rock stars, and prizefighters-did not speak.
