"A force of evil will torment a town." Dark Sky Films has released a new 2021 trailer for this indie horror film originally from 2008 called The Wild Man of the Navidad, made by filmmakers Duane Graves & Justin Meeks. This premiered years ago but is getting a re-release, or so it seems. It is allegedly based on the real-life journals of Dale S. Rogers, a man who, in the 1970s, lived along the banks of the Navidad River in Sublime, Texas - the same area where the original legend of the "Wild Man of the Navidad" surfaced back in the late 1800s. This vintage horror tale debunks history books to tell the harrowing story of a rural Texas community whose residents were terrified for years by a mysterious creature inhabiting the nearby woods. The film stars William McBride, Justin Meeks, Stacy Meeks, Alex Garcia, Bob Wood, Shannon Biggers, and Charles Robertson. It's...

“Kill or Be Killed” (2015) aka “Red on Yella, Kill a Fella,” is a low budget horror-western released on DVD by Rlj Entertainment that also attempts to be a tribute to the spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s and Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” The plot is about a gang of outlaws in the year 1900 traveling 500 miles through Texas to get to a stash of gold that’s hidden at the bottom of a well in the sand dunes of Galveston Beach. The group is hounded on their journey by a mysterious being and one by one the gang members get picked off.
Like Peckinpah’s Wild Bunch these outlaws are a motley crew. Their leader, Claude “Sweet Tooth” Barbee, played by co-writer/director Justin Meeks, is very loosely based on real-life outlaw Sam Bass. As Meeks portrays him, Barbee is a man obsessed with...

Well look-e here my creeps; none other than Kill Or Be Killed‘s Die-rector slash writers Justin Meeks and Duane Graves have just rolled into the Crypt o’ Xiii like a couple o’ tumblin’ tumbleweeds!
Famous Monsters. Welcome to the Crypt! Let’s just jump right in; what inspired ya to create Kill Or Be Killed?
Justin Meeks. I have always had a special place in my heart for westerns, and a burning desire to make one. Sergio Leone, Clint Eastwood, Peckinpah, and others have brought their visions into my living room many times. So, after our film Wild Man Of The Navidad was sold at Tribeca, we had a meeting with the Weinstein Co. They were interested in what was on the back burner, and we pitched them a rough idea for Kill Or Be Killed, untitled at the time. They seem to love it, and that inspired Duane...

We have been given a clip to share with you, which involves a bloody shootout. And where there are a lot of guns there will eventually be a smattering of dead people too. Good times. ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ actress Marilyn Burns dead at 64 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre actress Marilyn Burns, the one cast member who manages to survive Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s low-budget 1974 horror cult classic, was found dead on Tuesday, August 4, 2014, at her home in the Houston area. According to her manager, "she was found unresponsive by a family member." The cause of death remains unclear. Burns (born on July 5, 1950, in Erie, Pennsylvania) was 64. The Houston-raised Marilyn Burns began appearing in films in the early ’70s. She had a bit part in Robert Altman’s Houston-filmed Brewster McCloud (1970), starring Bud Cort, Sally Kellerman, and Shelley Duvall, and was later cast in a supporting role in Sidney Lumet’s Austin-shot 1974 drama Lovin’ Molly; however, Burns was ultimately replaced by Susan Sarandon, reportedly remaining in the production as a stand-in for both Sarandon and Blythe Danner. Also in 1974, Marilyn Burns landed the...

"Butcher Boys" has a tough road ahead of it. Thanks to its writer and producer, the movie will inevitably be compared to "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" as soon as the opening credits start to roll. It's unfair and a shame, because the movie once entitled "Boneboys" actually isn't a bad little independent horror piece.
Four friends are out on the town for a birthday celebration. After provoking a couple troublemakers, the group get into a high-speed chase through a bad part of the city. They drive up on a gang hanging out in the street, causing a wreck that kills the dog of one of the thugs. Little do they know that their actions have brought them into the world of a cannibalistic band of psychopaths bent on making them their next meal.
Kim Henkel is probably best known as the producer and writer of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Directors Duane Graves and Justin Meeks are the subject of our latest Q&A feature, telling us about their experience with the recently released cannibal film, Butcher Boys:
Can you tell me how you got involved with Kim Henkel on this project? Was this something you came to him with or the other way around?
Duane Graves: We’ve had a long 16 year relationship with Kim Henkel. He was our college film professor back in the late 90′s. We took a year of screenwriting courses under him, and after graduating we kept in touch. Justin and I produced a trio of short horror films that Kim produced, and eventually we decided to do a feature film back in 2006 called “The Wild Man of the Navidad.” That film premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC and was picked up by IFC Films for release internationally. Oh boy, a movie from the creator of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre himself, Tobe Hooper! Wait, it’s not Tobe Hooper? It’s Kim Henkel?

Butcher Boys is one of those cannibalistic-type cult movies much like Delicatessen or Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, where the psychopaths view people as a source of income and food, except the work by Duane Graves and Justin Meeks is nowhere as entraining as the movies mentioned above, or most of the genre, for that matter. What came first…the chicken or the egg? The eternal question is not really a question at all. It depends on your own point of view. What you have as your foundation dictates the answer. With that in mind, what dictates that a scene or action is a trademark as opposed to being an homage (or a rip off for that matter)? It depends on our point of view. This thought process comes heavily into play for the viewer when watching Butcher Boys aka Bone Boys, Kim Henkel’s most accomplished work to date, brought to life by directors Justin Meeks and Duane Graves.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films Directors: Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. Writer: Kim Henkel. Cast: Ali Faulkner, Edwin Neal, Marilyn Burns, Derek Lee Nixon, Karrie Cox and Sonny Carl Davis. Butcher Boys is a cannibal film set in Texas, from writer Kim Henkel. Horror fans will recognize Henkel's name from the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Henkel is still churning out cannibal films, but the Butcher Boys is tainted meat. Shot on a sparse budget, the Butcher Boys is full of cat and mouse chase sequences and not much more. Instead, the film seems to spin its wheels in the second and third acts. The story begins with four twentysomethings. You will hardly figure out their names before these two couples are being chased by a group of thugs, straight out of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Several minutes are spent with chase sequences,...

The Boneboys is a looming cannibalistic feature that continues to confuse one film fan. The first trailer for the feature, hosted here, shows a group of friends on the run from something or someone that is left unexplained. Unfortunately, these friends run into a family of cannibals who seem to be on the hungry side. How does a family of cannibals manage to live in a major urban centre? With that question aside, horror fans might remember writer Kim Henkel from his work on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). This is one of Duane Graves' first feature films as director and Justin Meeks (The Wild Man of Navidad) has a background in both an acting and directing. Have a look at the first trailer for their latest horror venture below and try to put the puzzle pieces together. Directors: Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. Writer/producer: Kim Henkel. Austin Film Society recently received a $75,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The nonprofit organization is one of 80 "Our Town" grantees in the nation. The grant will fund community engagement and design for Austin Studios' expansion as the organization incorporates and remodels the neighboring decommissioned National Guard Building into its current site.
Afs will involve the community in the new Austin Studios design, which includes creating affordable space for production and education; programming and design of a new exhibition and visitors center with a plaza/lobby for events; screening rooms for Afs's exhibition programs, artists, festivals and community organizations; and plans for signage, landscaping and other infrastructure that will allow the public to observe and interact with working filmmakers and other artists. The expansion will fulfill four major needs identified by the 2008 CreateAustin Cultural Master Plan commissioned by the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division.

The Wild Man of the Navidad co-director Duane Graves dropped me a line with word of his latest production written and produced by original Texas Chain Saw Massacre writer/producer Kim Henkel, Boneboys, which unleashes predatory cannibals in a cityscape.
Boneboys was originally conceived back in 2008 as a potential urban Texas Chain Saw Massacre sequel before getting reworked into its own potential franchise. Leatherface fans should be thrilled to know Boneboys boasts cameos by several TCM series alumni: Marilyn Burns, Bill Johnson, Ed Neal, Ed Guinn, Bill Wise, Perry Lorenz and John Dugan.

Without Richard Linklater's slice of life film [1] Slacker, the independent film boom of the 1990s might not have happened. Unlike almost anything American audiences had seen before, it inspired a generation of filmmakers to go out and make their own movies. Kevin Smith often credits seeing the film at the Angelika Film Center in New York as his inspiration to make Clerks, the film's success gave Linklater the ability to make Dazed and Confused and so much more. First released in 1991, Slacker celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and the Austin Film Society and the Alamo Drafthouse are teaming up for a remake. In typical Austin and Drafthouse style, though, isn't a by the book remake. There aren't any big special effects or A-list actors. Instead, 23 Austin filmmakers will reshoot scenes using the same dialogue and locations from the original film and string them together as a meta-homage. Read...

Richard Linklater made a splash back in 1991 with his independent low budget film Slacker. The film was unique in its structure and seemingly plotless film, following a single day in the life of an ensemble of mostly twenty-something youths in Austin, Texas. The film followed various characters and scenes, never staying with one character or conversation for more than a few minutes before picking up someone else in the scene and following them. A similar idea was also explored at around the same time in a film called Twenty Bucks, that well followed a 20 dollar bill around for a day.
Now two decades later, the Austin Film Society and The Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas are teaming up with 23 Austin filmmakers to remake Richard Linklater’s critically acclaimed movie to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary. According to the Austin Film Society [via The Playlist] “Each scene will be recreated, using the original dialogue and...
