Eragon ends with a major cliffhanger, leaving the story incomplete. Flash Gordon hints at a sequel but never materializes, leaving the fate of the characters unknown. Freddy vs. Jason has an unclear winner, with plans for a sequel story only appearing in comics.

As the dawn of the new millennium approached, the world would start to see a trend of films that would become very mainstream. These types of movies are action horror video game adaptations. As stated in our previous video, there have been a number of different ones, but nothing stood out more than Resident Evil. In 2002, we were graced with the first in this series. It may not have been the critic’s favorite, but it did well enough at the box office to spawn a sequel. The name of that sequel is Resident Evil: Apocalypse (watch it Here). With a title that big, you would think the filmmakers went for bigger, better and more destructive…right? For the most part, yes and they even packed in some surprises for fans of the series. So today on Horror Revisited we ask that you suit up and strap in for Alice...

There was a significant degree of excitement in horror circles when it was announced that British director Ben Wheatley was going to be directing the sequel to 2018’s Jason Statham vs Giant Shark blockbuster The Meg. The hope was that Wheatley’s horror sensibilities and eye for jet-black humour would add a bit of bite to what was otherwise a passably entertaining, but ultimately uninspired Jaws retread. Unfortunately, those hopes have not come to pass, as there’s very little trace of the acclaimed British director’s signature touch in this largely derivative sequel.

It may seem hard to believe, but at one stage Resident Evil was not only the highest-grossing film series based on a video game, but also the highest-grossing horror film series period. Consisting of six movies and a reboot, the Resident Evil movies just kept making money even while they were being bashed by critics. Most of those critics arguably had valid points, but the arrival of a new Resident Evil movie simply became oddly comforting somewhere along the way.
Thanks to the creative voices of Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson and his Fifth Element actress wife Milla Jovovich, six of the seven Resident Evil movies feature the character of Alice (Jovovich firing on all cylinders), a former security specialist and covert operative who initially has amnesia but eventually remembers she’s out to take down the insidious Umbrella Corporation, a global company responsible for Earth’s weirdest zombie apocalypse.

The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

Sharksploitation movies live and die based on the strength of their bite. In order to make us afraid to go in the water, genre filmmakers usually deploy a barrage of visual and practical effects to bring to life the ocean’s most feared predator: the shark. Of the many aquatic horror films to hit the screen, few have featured teeth so big and vicious as The Meg.

The following contains spoilers for Meg 2: The Trench, now playing in theaters.
In Meg 2: The Trench, Jason Statham's Jonas once more has to stop giant sharks from devouring pockets of vacationers outside of China. This time, he has more human enemies to contend with in a modern spin on the Jaws franchise. It's all thanks to his company having an evil investor, Sienna Guillory's Driscoli. She sent a secret team down into the Trench for illegal metal mining, which leads to an explosion that creates a hole in the thermal barrier that keeps the creatures in their habitat.
Meg 2's finale results in two megalodons coming up to meet Haiqi -- the shark Jonas' company raised as a baby. In quick time, the sharks go on a rampage at Fun Island. Thankfully, Jonas' colleagues rally with him, leading to another bloody ending that defies logic the...

The summer box office season may have reached the dog days of August, but it’s hardly looked stronger over the past few months. Though the openings of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” won’t be able to take down “Barbie” as the top performer in North America, both new releases are boosting theaters to a weekend with four different features grossing north of $25 million.
Paramount Pictures’ “Mutant Mayhem” added $9.3 million from 3,858 locations on Friday, tracking neck-and-neck with “Oppenheimer” for second place on domestic charts. The animated feature, produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions, opened with Tuesday evening preview screenings and is now tracking for a $42 million five-day debut — squarely within the projections of $35 million to $45 million heading into the weekend.
That’s not shabby for the “Tmnt” entry, which cost only $70 million to produce — an especially economical figure for an animated studio release.

Director Ben Wheatley cites Steven Spielberg's Jaws as the biggest inspiration for The Meg 2, calling it not only the greatest shark film but one of the greatest films of all time. Wheatley also draws inspiration from monster movies like Godzilla and Thing From Another World, as well as '40s adventure films with scientific elements. The sequel aims to maintain the vulnerable and relatable characters from the first film, offering an adventure where the audience can understand and worry about the protagonists.
While speaking to ScreenRant, The Meg 2: The Trench director Ben Wheatley revealed that Steven Spielberg's Jaws was the biggest inspiration for his latest film and explained how the 1975 classic action thriller as well as other monster movies influenced The Meg sequel.
The Meg 2: The Trench stars Jason Statham, Jing Wu, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sienna Guillory, Melissanthi Mahut, and Skyler Samuels.

Every summer movie season deserves a killer shark flick! After all, it was a killer shark movie that pretty much kicked off what we now know as the "summer blockbuster" way back in 1975, the immortal "Jaws." Because of that film's success, every killer shark venture is inevitably compared to that Spielberg classic, its three sequels, and the large number of copies that appeared immediately in its wake. In a subgenre that's been through the waves of popularity, postmodernism, and back, there's not a ton that's wholly new out there in the ocean.

Warning: Major spoilers for The Meg 2: The Trench below!
Meg 2: The Trench's ending features Jonas and his crew protecting tourists from escaped Megalodons, while also dealing with mercenaries and a villain's plot. Jonas kills two Megalodons but Haiqi, a female Meg, manages to escape. The movie hints at Haiqi being pregnant, suggesting that more Megalodons will pose a threat in the future, along with the possibility of other aquatic creatures.
Meg 2: The Trench's ending once again proves that Megalodons are no match for the apex predator known as Jason Statham. Meg 2 picks up a few years on from the original The Meg's ending, where Jonas and his Mana One team go on another expedition into the Mariana Trench, only to run into trouble from three Megs and discovering an illegal mining base on the bottom. Review: 2018’s The Meg overcame middling reviews (including one from yours truly) to become an unlikely global success at the box office. Like its predecessor, Meg 2: The Trench is based on a novel by author Steve Alten, and what’s exciting to genre fans is that the great Ben Wheatley is behind the camera. For those who may not know his work, Wheatley is widely considered one of the UK’s best genre directors, with him having made Kill List, Sightseers, Free Fire, High Rise and – recently – the Netflix remake of Rebecca. This is different for him because it’s a big-budget event movie. How does it fare compared to the original?
Honestly, it’s a mixed bag.

The Meg 2: The Trench is the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2018 film and has been in development for a long time due to the pandemic. The movie aims to appeal to a wider audience by keeping the violence at a minimum, similar to the first installment of the franchise. The sequel follows Jason Statham's character, Jonas Taylor, as he leads a team on a dangerous dive into unexplored areas where they awaken a group of terrifying Megs, including the biggest one ever seen.

The biggest complaint about 2018’s The Meg, an American and Chinese co-production loosely based on author Steve Alten’s novel, was that it lacked bite. The PG-13 action vehicle for Jason Statham brought the B-movie sense of fun, but it was too restrained regarding the megalodon carnage. Meg 2: The Trench answers the first film’s criticisms, though not in the way you’d anticipate. Director Ben Wheatley forgoes retreading the same waters with a higher body count. Instead, Wheatley goes full throttle on the B-movie spectacle, packing the nearly two-hour runtime to the gills with aquatic horror madness and nonstop entertainment.
Picking up six years after The Meg, Jonas Taylor (Statham) is now a fully integrated member of the found family forged from the last film, living at the underwater research facility and furthering their studies of the Trench and the Megalodon sharks, one of which they have in captivity.

"Meg 2: The Trench" is a new science fiction action feature, directed by Ben Wheatley based on the 1999 novel "The Trench" by Steve Alten, starring Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, Sienna Guillory, and Cliff Curtis, releasing August 4, 2023 in theaters:
"...get ready for the ultimate adrenaline rush this summer in 'Meg 2: The Trench', a literally larger-than-life thrill ride that supersizes the 2018 blockbuster and takes the action to higher heights and even greater depths with multiple massive 'Megs' and so much more!"

Jason Statham returns to battle underwater intrigue in a prehistoric shark feeding frenzy unleashed on hapless tourists. Meg 2: The Trench brings other hungry Cretaceous critters to the human buffet in a sci-fi adventure akin to Jurassic Park. It's a B-movie with a blockbuster budget.
The sequel revels in monster tropes, gloriously overblown action, and cheesy one-liners. There's also the plucky teen sidekick that, gosh darn it, just can't stay out of trouble and requires constant rescuing. The supporting cast carries more of the fighting weight but pay the price as deli meat. It runs a bit long, but you'll cheer and roar with laughter at the popcorn cinema carnage.
The film opens with an ancient primer on Megalodon dominance. In present day Philippines, a container ship illegally dumps radioactive waste into the ocean. Jonas Taylor (Statham) has snuck aboard to stop them. It's bullets and beatdowns as the baddies...

No one needed a bigger megalodon after 2018’s shockingly dull shark exploit, “The Meg.” But we’re getting one anyway with Ben Wheatley’s outsized shipwreck “Meg 2: The Trench,” a dimwitted sequel committed to plunge into the depths of agonizing boredom, doing so at 25,000 feet, to be exact.
At least the initial chapter came with something that resembled a story. No such luck here, thanks to an inexplicably broad script by Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber (the same trio that penned the first tedious installment) that liberally borrows from “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” “Piranha 3D,” “Alien” and so on. In certain sequences, the references from the first two of these pictures feel so shameless that one ponders whether Steven Spielberg would have a legal case against “The Trench” if he didn’t have much bigger fish to fry.
The film superfluously starts in the Cretaceous period to give...

Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg was frustratingly dour and straight-faced for a film that pit Jason Statham’s rescue diver Jonas Taylor and a bunch of research scientists against a prehistoric megashark. And for its first hour, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench is also a derivative and listless affair, feebly drawing influence from the likes of Alien, Jaws, and The Abyss but never coming close to approximating their mood of tension and horror.
Meg 2 finds Jonas now working as an eco-warrior alongside engineer buddies Mac (Cliff Curtis) and DJ (Page Kennedy) and a few other scientists. Again venturing into “the trench”—the deepest part of the ocean where megalodons, or megs, in the world of the film still flourish—Jonas and his team encounter an illegal mining operation and eventually find themselves trapped and forced to take extreme measures to escape. This underlit stretch of Wheatley’s film...

Given his grounding in visceral horror and thrillers laced with a mischievous vein of dark humor, Ben Wheatley seemed an intriguing choice to take the directing reins on Meg 2: The Trench, the sequel to the 2018 B-movie about a megalodon terrorizing a bunch of scientists and Jason Statham before homing in on a buffet of beachgoers.
The good news is that Statham’s back, bringing his rugged charm and tough-guy self-irony to sparkling dialogue like “I’ve got this,” “Shit!” and “See ya later, chum,” that last one delivered as he dispatches a prehistoric shark. The disappointing news is that the big, dumb fun promised by a terrific trailer — ingeniously cut to the 1977 Heart banger, “Barracuda” — only materializes intermittently in a movie that too often struggles to find the balance between suspense and monster-size silliness.
To be fair to Wheatley, the Brit director is not helped much by Jon Hoeber,...

Five years ago, The Meg came out and was a pleasant summer-ending surprise. Placing its tongue firmly in its cheek for 113 minutes, the watery spectacle allowed us to watch the ever-watchable Jason Statham go mano-a-mano with a 75-foot shark. The idea behind the movie (which was based on a much more sober-minded novel by Steve Alten than had been in development for nearly a quarter century) was apparently to make a good old-fashioned monster movie with a few knowing winks to the audience.
The Meg’s box office success and its final shot also virtually ensured a sequel, so now Meg 2: The Trench arrives with Statham and a few other holdovers back for another round. Meanwhile workmanlike director Jon Turtletaub has been replaced this time by the eccentric indie maverick Ben Wheatley.

Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link), is set to reach theatres on August 4th – and while this sequel will feature multiple giant sharks, those aren’t the only prehistoric creatures that will be rampaging across the screen. In fact, a newly released promo, which you can check out in the embed above, says that this time “the Megs are just the beginning”. One of the other giant creatures we’ll be seeing in Meg 2: The Trench is an octopus, and you can get a glimpse of some giant octopus action in this promo, including a moment where the octopus gets in a fight with a Meg! A moment that brings to mind the 2009 classic Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus.

The Dolby Cinema poster for Meg 2: The Trench highlights the size of the megalodon, promising an even bigger installment than the original. The sequel will feature multiple megalodons and elevated set pieces, including one eating a T-Rex, adding more over-the-top action. The addition of Chinese actor Wu Jing could make Meg 2: The Trench a massive commercial hit in China, following his success in The Wandering Earth 2.

Eragon, the 2006 film based on Christopher Paolini's novel of the same name, was a complete disaster for a multitude of reasons. Paolini's Inheritance Cycle, of which Eragon is the first book, has been extremely successful worldwide, despite the failure of the movie. Luckily for fans of the Inheritance Cycle, the series is being adapted once again, this time as a television series on Disney+. If Disney's Eragon TV show is going to redeem the movie, it will be essential to understand what went wrong the first time.
Audiences and critics were united in their disappointment when Eragon came out in 2006, but identifying the sources of their disappointment may not be as easy as Disney thinks. Eragon performed remarkably badly, and there were few positives to take away from the film. As such, Disney may have to rely on the books to find the right formula for its Eragon adaptation.

Meg 2: The Trench is still a few weeks away from hitting theaters, but its director is already thinking ahead. The first film in the action saga starring Jason Statham was released in 2018 and fetched close to $530 million at the box office, on a budget of about $170 million, making it a huge success.
Quickly, Warner Bros. Pictures decided to continue with the story and the sequel was confirmed, which due to the pandemic would take a long time to arrive. Now that only days separate the world from the return of Statham taking on giant sharks, it looks like a third movie could be confirmed soon.
In an interview with TotalFilm, director Ben Wheatley anticipates the future of the franchise by being positive about its continuation:
“You don't want to talk about it until Meg 2 is out, but I hope [to see a third installment]. There's a lot more to explore in that world. It's very rich.

Whether they are good, bad, or simply incomplete endings, there are just some movie cliffhangers that viewers will never get answers for. Often, it's a pity that certain cliffhangers won't ever have the chance to be resolved, especially for stories that clearly demand a next chapter in order to be truly complete. This is especially true for movies that weren't supposed to be the last entries in their respective franchises. Sometimes, however, an unanswered cliffhanger is the perfect way to conclude a movie.
From the best to the worst movie endings, a cliffhanger finale can determine how a movie is remembered by audiences throughout the years. After all, it's the last scene that viewers see. Cliffhangers can also set up sequels - or mark failed attempts at launching a sequel or franchise. Either way, cliffhangers create suspense and expectation - but also disappointment if they're left forever unresolved. Here are...

Meg 2: The Trench recently took a chomp at The Little Mermaid with a new promo parodying Disney's upcoming live-action remake.
The official Twitter account for Meg 2: The Trench released a new teaser for Warner Bros.' upcoming action sequel, which starts as a parody of Disney's The Little Mermaid. "This summer, magic awaits under the sea," the teaser states while uplifting music plays over beautiful images of sea life. The promo then cuts to one of the megalodon sharks devouring a female swimmer in a paddle boat, leading to the rest of the promo acting as a more traditional ad for Meg 2. With The Little Mermaid set to open in theaters next weekend, the marketing team behind Meg 2: The Trench seemingly figured that it was the perfect time to release the hilarious promo.

For some people, horror cinema is defined by scrappy outsiders who make films on shoestring budgets, but that's not really what it's all about — and it never has been. Since the beginning, horror has been an extremely popular (and profitable) film genre, and one successful horror movie usually begets multiple follow-ups.
As the characters in "Scream 2" note in the film's meta-commentary, sequels are a controversial topic among movie fans, and they're not always well-received from a critical standpoint. However, even if fans are skeptical, they'll probably still show up to the theater to see the newest entry in their favorite series. And while horror sequels often receive the ire of fans and critics — think "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" or the completely unnecessary "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" — there are also sequels that equal or improved upon the original, like "Aliens" or "Evil Dead II....

Jason Statham has found himself in shark-infested waters once again in the newly revealed trailer for Meg 2: The Trench. The follow-up to the outrageous 2018 aquatic action film arrives in theaters on August 4th.
The initial preview begins in a prehistoric era where the titular Megalodon swims at the top of the food chain, and after jumping 65 millions years ahead, it appears not much has changed. After Statham’s heroic rescue diver Jonas Taylor leads a team to the bottom of the ocean, the crew comes face-t0-face with a whole new host of monsters, including “the biggest Meg anyone’s ever seen.”
The stakes are certainly higher with Statham squaring off against multiple Megalodons, but the action star brings out a whole new level of brain-dead badassery by nearly sticking his foot in the belly of the beast to stop a charging Meg in its tracks. Watch the full trailer below.
