After Kellie Madison released the proof of concept short The Gate, the high octane film became a viral sensation with 4 million views and it got her the job directing Never Back Down: Revolt, a low budget action film back by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that got released recently.
With that film under her belt, Madison is hoping to make the leap to direct the feature version of the short that put her on the map. Briarcliff Entertainment’s Tom Ortenberg is taking the concept out to financiers. The short stars Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s Amy Johnston and The Raid 2’s Cecep Arif in a violent struggle by a young woman to save her suicidal sister, whose soul is about to be captured by an unsavory Indonesian crime boss. It leads to a larger adventure to find a pathway to ultimate power, called The Gate.

There are plenty of crowd-funding campaigns for TV and film projects, but as the demand for diversity and inclusivity becomes front and center, creators are starting to make content that fulfills that demand for representation of marginalized communities. For filmmaker Kellie Madison, she has taken a different approach with a commercial spec that includes the highly underrepresented gender fluid community.
Under the umbrella of the Lgbtq+ community, those who identify as gender fluid are flexible in their gender identity. For Madison, she wanted to shine a light on this community and instead of making a short film, she thought a commercial would have a wider impact. “Advertising has a profound influence on our subconscious minds and shapes societies perception of what is deemed ‘acceptable’ or ‘normal’,” she told Deadline. “Creating a commercial designed to promote gender and Lgbtq inclusivity could have an enormous impact on shifting global consciousness, paving the way for breaking gender stereotypes,...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Clark Peterson, whose credits include the Oscar-winning Monster, returns to serial-killer cinema with Dear Mr. Gacy. The movie is based on the memoir The Last Victim by Jason Moss.
Award-winning Macedonian director Svetozar Ristovski makes his English-language debut on the movie, which recounts the real-life correspondence between college student Moss and the imprisoned child murderer. Moss wound up visiting Gacy on Death Row and almost became one of his victims; following the book’s publication, he committed suicide in 2006. “The theme here is once you encounter that kind of darkness, it’s hard to escape it,” Peterson tells the trade. “Jason seemed to be a success because he had this encounter with John Wayne Gacy, wrote a book and went on television. But ultimately it came to a tragic end.”
