Back in 2009, director Robert Green Hall introduced the world to a chrome-masked maniac called ChromeSkull in the very cool slasher Laid to Rest. A divisive sequel called ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 followed two years later – and as the years went by, Hall let it be known that he intended to make another sequel called Laid to Rest: Exhumed. Sadly, he wasn’t able to make that movie before he passed away unexpectedly back in 2021. But Nick Principe – who recently wrote and starred in the horror thriller Johnny & Clyde and also played ChromeSkull in both Laid to Rest movies – has revealed to our friends at Bloody Disgusting that he intends to continue the Laid to Rest franchise with a comic book called The Reflection of Fear!
Principe explained why he’s moving forward with a comic book instead of trying to get another Laid to Rest movie into production: “To be totally honest,...

At last, an adventure movie that does without action-epic superhero Bs. Cinema has a love affair with mental illness. A shut-in with mommy issues. An insurance assessor with dissociative identity disorder. A Nobel-winning mathematician suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. And then there are those who decide to climb Mt. Everest. Certainly more daunting a lifelong pursuit than selling soap or managing a hotel, the prospect of summiting 9,000 meters above Earth’s surface attracts a rare breed of thrill-seeker, mountaineers willing to put their life or “merely” their lungs and limbs on the line against suffocating elevation and Nepalese snowstorms. In terms of mental disorders, scaling the tallest point on the planet can be filed under “psychosis.”
Baltasar Kormákur’s Everest depicts two such climbing expeditions, albeit without recognizing the crazier elements of the venture. That’s likely because many perished in the 1996 climb up Everest, including New Zealand good guy Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and Scott Fischer...

"Everest" is now in theaters, giving everyone IMAX and 3D enhanced vertigo, at least until "The Walk" opens. And while the mountain climbing drama has earned mix reviews, it has received a scathing notice from someone intimate with the true story tale: author Jon Krakauer, who was on the climb, and recounted the adventure in his book "Into Thin Air." While the movie isn't based on his work, Krakauer is nonetheless displeased with the results, and in particular, how his character (played by Michael Kelly) is portrayed. **Mild Spoilers Ahead** “It’s total bull,” he told The Los Angeles Times. “Anyone who goes to that movie and wants a fact-based account should read ‘Into Thin Air.' " In particular, he's peeved at a scene in the film in which he's asked to help rescue Jason Clarke's Rob Hall, but declines because he's snow blind. “I never had that conversation,...

A starry cast lines up for this true story of survival on the world's tallest peak, but the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and Keira Knightley only elevate the film just above the standard of a Lifetime movie.
Even the mountain itself is let down, never seeming as imposing as it should be (regardless of the IMAX 3D effect) largely because of a rather muddled depiction of events by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur (2 Guns).
Brolin is a grounding force and the solid centre around which a large ensemble cast gathers. It's a fine performance, trading on his characteristic stoicism but with a crucial note of vulnerability as one of the older members of a climbing group. He is wealthy Texan Beck Weathers who is determined to summit Everest in 1996. Jason Clarke is their Kiwi guide Rob Hall, who has a pregnant wife (Keira Knightley in a small but heartrending...

There’s a moment in most sports movies when you realize that you want the good guys to win. You want the heroes to beat the enemy. Take for instance the movie Rocky. It doesn’t take long into the film, but you care for the title character enough to root for him no matter what happens. Try as it may, Everest never quite manages to make that same connection. Part of it might be because of the film and part of it might have to do with my own personal mental block, but I kept repeating the same thing to myself: these people are crazy. There is a certain level to crazy that you have inside of you to voluntarily climb a mountain in terrain and atmospheric conditions that are not meant for human life. There are moments throughout the film where we’re meant to connect with these...

UK/USA/Iceland, 2015
The phrase “visually stunning” is used pretty liberally these days, what with a new blockbuster extravaganza arriving nearly every weekend. The new disaster drama, Everest, quite literally takes things to new heights. Director Baltasar Kormákur mixes breathtaking cinematography, dizzying special effects, and pummeling sound to bring the infamous mountain to life. Unfortunately, the script can’t keep pace, as it sidesteps the shortcomings of its characters in order to preserve an emotional denouement. It’s worth an afternoon at the IMAX theater to take in the sights, but don’t expect any new insight into this harrowing ordeal.
In 1996, eight climbers comprising two expedition groups died after being overtaken by a vicious storm atop Mt. Everest. One group, Adventure Consultants, was led by the amiable Kiwi, Rob Hall (Jason Clarke), while the other was helmed by the hard-living American,...

The true-life drama about a disastrous attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1996 delivers neither edge-of-your-seat thrills nor a compelling story
Related: Everest: how Jake Gyllenhaal got to grips with the world's highest mountain
Here is a subdued true-life drama about a calamitous attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1996. It’s a film with loads of ice, snow, beards, mountains, beards and men shouting desperate instructions at each other through their snowy beards. The tremulous womenfolk are pining and whining on the end of a radio receiver or telephone, while the heroic guys battle the elements. Jake Gyllenhaal has a role that turns out to be bafflingly peripheral. The dramatic focus is split between around half a dozen characters, and it’s not clear who we should root for or why. Jason Clarke plays Rob Hall, one of the new breed of guides who have made climbing Everest a commercialised...

The Australian actor has found himself working for Oliver Stone, Michael Mann and Terrence Malick but can also lend blockbusters a more thoughtful face
Jason Clarke, the star of Everest, is a mountain of a man: six foot two with square shoulders and a vast sheer cliff of a forehead. When Christian Bale dropped out of this adventure story, based on real events, it was Clarke who stepped into his climbing boots to play Rob Hall, leader of a commercial expedition to the summit in May 1996 that went horribly wrong. Clarke, blokey and dependable, has the look of someone you would follow confidently into a fight, whereas Bale comes across as the sort of man who would start one. What makes the 46-year-old Australian more intriguing than a standard tough nut is the wounded quality in his eyes. Easygoing in nature, he always seems to have something on his mind.

Whether we’re exploring pitch-black ocean depths, or the tallest mount peaks, mankind’s curiosity will always put us at odds with Mother Nature’s imposing dominance. There’s beauty amidst her furious chaos, and our arrogant need to test her limits will always give us breathtaking stories about the human spirit. But Everest isn’t just about defying the odds – it doubles as dramatic warning.
Based on true events, we meet a team of private climbers who make it their mission to conquer Earth’s highest surface by challenging conditions that our bodies simply weren’t engineered to handle. Climbers laugh in the face of death when reaching heights reserved only for compressed airplane travel. Yet, people still paid – handsomely – to be one of the lucky few who could hopefully boast about beating Everest. It’s reminiscent of a heroic knight bragging about slaying their kingdom’s fiercest dragon,...

★★★☆☆ Plunging you into the mindset of a group of mountaineers tackling the highest point on Earth, Baltasar Kormákur's Everest (2015) is a heady disaster movie based on the true-life story of a disastrous 1996 expedition that ended in the deaths of twelve professional and non-professional climbers. Pitching man against nature, we meet Rob Hall (Jason Clarke, last seen in the dire Terminator Genisys) who runs a commercial climbing company that takes intrepid types from all backgrounds up to the summit of the mountain. As he states in the film, his job is not to get you to the top of the mountain but "to get you back down" - fateful words that pre-empt the events to follow.

New movie epic Everest recreates a 1996 disaster that killed eight people - and star Naoko Mori admits filming the drama was "utter hell".
Mori plays Yasuko Namba - at 47, then the oldest woman to have reached Everest's summit - and though she describes the film as her "perfect project", the actress told Digital Spy that the shoot was an enormous challenge.
"It was extraordinary - in all senses of the word," she said. "That harsh environment - the cold, the altitude, the exhaustion, everything - it was such an epic adventure in itself, filming this."
Shooting for the first few weeks in Nepal, Mori and her castmates battled sleep apnoea because of the lack of oxygen, and temperatures that plummeted to around -20°C.
"We thought the hard part was over - how wrong we were!" she laughed. "We then went on to the Italian Alps... and that was just utter hell.

This is the kind of movie movies were invented for: big, visceral, and intense, a heart-stopping adventure that has you catching your breath and gasping in shock as it takes you places most of us will never get to so as to engage in the sort of life-threatening thrills that, paradoxically, remind us that we are alive. That’s an argument that safety-minded homebodies like me scoff at when risk-takers make it, but Everest makes you understand it deep in your gut.
And this is true even though Everest is the story of what had been the deadliest climbing season on the mountain until the 2014 and 2015 avalanches.

It says a great deal about the human condition that some people would spend tens of thousands of dollars to climb one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
One early scene in director Baltasar Kormakur’s survival thriller perfectly illustrates this point: a climber totters above an unfeasibly long drop into a deep trench of ice and snow. He’s standing on a rickety ladder most of us wouldn’t use to climb up into a loft. Just as the climber gets his footing, a nearby sheet of ice the size of a double decker bus shears off, leaving the ladder shuddering in its wake. For most of us, this is the kind of situation we’d pay thousands to avoid.

Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur tackles his largest Hollywood project to-date, with this epically staged account of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which eight climbers perished on the Himalayan peak in a single day. Featuring a robust ensemble cast and thrilling set pieces, Everest largely avoids the he-said, she-said controversies raised by journalist Jon Krakauer's first-person account, Into Thin Air, instead presenting a diplomatic and stirring tale of Man vs Nature at the top of the world. In May 1996, Outside Magazine writer and amateur mountaineer Jon Krakauer joined an expedition led by New Zealander Rob Hall and his professional outfit Adventure Consultants to scale Mount Everest, the highest point on the planet. Krakauer's aim was to investigate and report on the ballooning commercialisation of summit attempts...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke lead the cast but the mountain is the star of Everest, a high-altitude thriller that opened the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday.
Based on real events, Baltasar Kormakur's film follows two expeditions caught in a blizzard while attempting to reach the summit in 1996.
Shot in 3-D and on the super-sized IMAX format, the film is a nerve-shredding, life-or-death battle between the mountain and the wind-whipped, snow-blinded, oxygen-deprived climbers. Some live and some die, but as one character notes, "the last word always belongs to the mountain."
"Part of telling the story is telling it in the elements," added Kormakur, who took his cast high into the Himalayas and imported snow to England's Pinewood Studios in his quest for authenticity. "The story happened in the elements."

As his film about the ill-fated 1996 expedition opens the Venice film festival, director Baltasar Kormákur explains how he and his cast coped with difficult conditions and delicate subject matter
Imported snow from Holland was among the secret weapons deployed by Everest director Baltasar Kormákur in his quest to make his 3D film about the disastrous 1996 expedition, when eight climbers died on the world’s highest mountain, as realistic as possible. “It was the real stuff, minus 60 degrees; when we were shooting at Pinewood, we blasted it in their faces as hard as we could.”

In 1996, eight climbers lost their lives as they struggled to reach the top of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. Baltasar Kormakur ("2 Guns") has turned their epic journey into the fall release "Everest," which has its world premiere Wednesday (Sept. 2) as the opening night attraction of this year's Venice film festival. This Universal release was shot on location in Nepal prior to the recent devastating earthquake. ★★★☆☆ In 1996, Kiwi Rob Hall and his company Adventure Consultants took a team of climbers along with a group of paying clients to Kathmandu with the hope of reaching the summit of the world's highest mountain on 10 May. The disaster that subsequently occurred was recorded in memoirs by several of the survivors, most successfully by professional journalist Jon Krakauer, whose book Into Thin Air became a bestseller and was adapted into a less-than-successful TV movie only a year after the tragedy. Following such startlingly impressive opening films as Gravity and Birdman, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur's new film Everest (2015) now opens the 72nd Venice Film Festival.

Any thoughts that Baltasar Kormákur may have bitten off more than he could chew in attempting to recreate the 1996 disaster on Everest are swept away by an avalanche of live action derring-do, extraordinary 3D visuals and heart-in-mouth drama. As openers go, Venice has bagged a commercial film that packs a serious punch. Jason Clarke and Jake Gyllenhaal play the two accomplished climbers, New Zealander Rob Hall and American Scott Fischer, who led high-end tours to the summit of the mountain. The question of whether it's advisable to take amateurs, even avid climbers, on such an arduous and risky adventure is a moot point, which the film doesn't shy away from. As one hardened pro muses, "the last word always belongs to the mountain." Yet it's impossible to leave the film without the bitter realization that human frailty and folly played its part. Kormákur, then, has played a good hand, combining...

The brand new trailer for Everest brings its ensemble cast to dizzying new heights filed with some high-altitude terror, proving that the climb down the mountain is much tougher than reaching the summit.
Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) leads the expedition as climber Rob Hall whose day on the world’s highest peak goes from bad to worse. While climbing at the heights similar to the cruising altitude of a 747 airplane, disaster strikes a team of climbers as they attempt to make their way down the peak amid a deadly blizzard.

The terrible, true story of what was, at the time, the deadliest summit attempt on Mount Everest is now being told in the new film, "Everest," which features an all-star cast and breathtaking special effects.
In the clip below, premiering today exclusively on Moviefone, climber Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) finally reaches the top of the titular mountain, and the achievement literally takes his breath away.
As Fischer fights for air in the notoriously low-oxygen environment, he chats with fellow climber Rob Hall (Jason Clarke), the leader of another expedition who's also just reached the top.
But while the scene in question is lighthearted -- the pair joke about who among their group has fallen behind, and who will make it to the summit first -- the circumstances that await them are anything but. As chronicled in Jon Krakauer's famous book, "Into Thin Air" (Krakauer was part of Hall's group,...

This one being the Imax version, it highlights the epic scope of the movie. I saw the 3D film at CineEurope in Barcelona in June and can attest to the grand, sweeping…...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke battle the elements in the first trailer from “Everest,” a fact-based thriller recounting two different expeditions attempting to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain. As revealed in the trailer released Thursday, “Everest” shows an intense battle of man versus nature. The two groups, led by Scott Fischer (Gyllenhaal) and Rob Hall (Clarke), are challenged beyond their limits when one of the biggest snowstorms in history slams Everest. What started as a lifelong goal quickly becomes a battle for survival against the elements. Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Martin Henderson, Emily Watson and Keira Knightley also star.

A disaster movie played out at 35,000 feet, Everest is essentially a true-life Cliffhanger, less the criminal schemes and Craig Fairbrass shouting about soccer. The film’s first trailer lends a sense of nature’s awe to the derring-do of a small band trying to scale the Earth’s highest point. Then things go wrong. Very, very wrong...Far from keeping its powder dry, Universal’s first trailer plunges us straight into to the freezing chaos of a fateful summit climb. The story is loosely inspired by real events (the 1996 disaster recounted in Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air) and sees Jason Clarke leading a party of climbers up the Nepalese monolith as Kiwi mountaineer Rob Hall. Alongside him on the slopes are Josh Brolin as Doctor Beck Weathers, John Hawkes as Doug Hansen and Jake Gyllenhaal as Scott Fischer, the leader of a separate expedition. Things are progressing nicely, with...

The Everest trailer is "another beast all together." From the Laid to Rest films to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Thomas Dekker has played a plethora of memorable roles in the horror and sci-fi genres. His performance in Robert Hall’s Fear Clinic is no exception—in his third collaboration with director Hall, Dekker turns in a fascinating performance as Blake, a young man suffering from brain damage and Ptsd after surviving a madman’s public shooting spree.
With Fear Clinic now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay, we caught up with the Dekker to discuss bringing Blake to life in non-vocal ways, his character’s chilling backstory, working with the legendary Robert Englund, facing his own fear during filming, and much more.
What were the challenges of realistically portraying a character with brain damage and Ptsd? Did digging into that role require any in-depth research?
Thomas Dekker: I have to give a lot of credit to Rob Hall.

As dream stalker Freddy Krueger in eight A Nightmare on Elm Street feature films and two seasons of Freddy’s Nightmares, Robert Englund expertly exploited people’s fears before adding yet another Elm Street notch to his kill list. But as Dr. Andover in Robert Hall’s 2009 Fear Clinic web series, Englund played a character with benevolent traits opposite of Krueger’s malevolent methods. Dr. Andover helped patients conquer their fears by having them face their personalized horrors in hallucinatory, dream-like states induced by his innovative Fear Chamber.
