The gifted and mercurial Lee Daniels, director of “Precious,” is one of the only filmmakers I can think of who would dare to drop a badass-diva moment of Billie Holiday violently slapping her spouse into the middle of an otherwise giddy celebrity-singer-on-tour montage. In Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” Billie, played with glamorous, blowsy, dagger-eyed force by Andra Day, has had her share of ups and downs — on and off heroin (mostly on); a stint in prison; a despicably unwarranted and relentless crackdown on her life and career by the U.S. government; a succession of romantic partners who are smooth-talking scoundrels — or, in one case, too nice and upstanding for her.
But Billie claws her way through every setback, to the point that she’s on a glittering concert tour of Europe. In the montage, we see her up onstage, in a Paris restaurant, and in a ritzy...

With The United States vs. Billie Holiday streaming on Hulu, both longtime and new fans will likely be clamoring for more of the legendary jazz singer, who died in 1959 at the age of 44. Born Eleanora Fagan, Billie Holiday was among the targets of Federal Bureau of Narcotics head Harry Anslinger, whose racist agenda fueled a so-called crackdown on marijuana and heroin. That torment, as well as the music icon’s life, is the subject of the upcoming Lee Daniels biopic starring Andra Day as Holiday and Trevante Rhodes as undercover FBI agent-turned-lover Jimmy Fletcher.

In Lee Daniel’s upcoming “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” coming to Hulu on Feb. 26, Andra Day plays legendary Billie Holiday. The film centers around her 1940s court trial and her encounters with the Federal Bureau of Narcotics.
Leslie Jordan plays journalist Reginald Lord Devine, who sits down with Holiday for an interview to discuss “Strange Fruit.” The song, which condemns the U.S. history of lynching Black people, caused Holiday to come under fire by the agency.
Of Jordan’s casting, Daniels says, “I’m a big fan of Leslie’s and I’ve always wanted to work with him. When I was thinking about this character — a journalist who interviews celebrities down on their luck – I envisioned a fusion of Quentin Crisp and Skip E. Lowe, a role I knew only Leslie could bring to life.”

Hulu has confirmed February 26 as the awards-qualifying US debut of The United States vs Billie Holiday, a relatively late awards season entry that is generating strong buzz for Andra Day’s performance as the celebrated jazz singer.
Paramount had been set to distribute until financier New Slate Ventures recognised the current pandemic landscape, in which roughly 40% of US cinemas are open, was unsuitable for a theatrical launch.
A deal was struck with Hulu in December and the film will debut solely on the platform in the US, with no theatrical component. Paramount previously set a February 26 release date.

‘The United States vs. Billie Holiday’ Trailer Showcases ‘Strong, Beautiful and Black’ Singer’s Life
The first trailer for Paramount’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” explores the tragic story of singer Billie Holiday, the racial inequalities of 1940s America and her encounters with the Federal Bureau of Narcotics.

Sierra/Affinity is handling international sales of Lee Daniels’ “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday,” starring Andra Day as the iconic jazz singer, at the upcoming Cannes Virtual Market.
The biopic focuses on Holiday being targeted by federal agents with an undercover sting operation aimed at prohibiting her from singing her controversial 1939 song, “Strange Fruit,” which protested the lynchings of Black Americans. “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday” is inspired by the 2015 New York Time’s Bestseller “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs” written by Johann Hari.
“With the world’s eyes forced to look at the centuries-old oppression of Black people, I hope ‘The United States Vs. Billie Holiday’ will add to this important conversation by shining a light on systemic racism and social injustice,” Daniels said. “I also feel that in this time of great reckoning it is essential we celebrate...

Bumpy Johnson sets his enemies against each other in this exclusive clip from Godfather of Harlem.
There's a battle brewing uptown on Epix's crime drama Godfather of Harlem, and all the players are looking for a home field advantage. Italian mob boss Joe Bonanno (Chazz Palminteri) may not want a war with Genovese capo Vincent “The Chin” Gigante, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, but Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker) is declaring his independence. An exclusive clip from episode 7
Johnson got out of prison to come home to a new Harlem. The deals he made with Lucky Luciano are losing value and the street price of dooji, or heroin, is on the rise. His old friend Malcolm X (Nigel Thatch) sees it as a blight on the community where the gangsters just see a commodity. It's business but it's about to get very personal.

“I got guns,” legendary gangster Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker) announces. “I got soldiers,” Malcolm X (Nigel Thatch) replies. For Epix’s new Godfather of Harlem — a Sixties period piece that mixes Mob action with civil-rights rhetoric — it’s a match made in gritty-drama heaven.

"Little is known about the life of musician Buddy Bolden: He was born on September 6th, 1877. At the age of 30, he was committed to an asylum where he died in 1931. His only known recording has never been found. He invented Jazz." How's that for an intro? Abramorama has debuted the official trailer for an indie biopic titled Bolden, about the legendary musician named Buddy Bolden - a cornetist who is regarded as one of the key figures in the development of a New Orleans-style of ragtime music, called "jass", which later came to be known as jazz. Gary Carr stars as Bolden, with Erik Laray Harvey, Yaya DaCosta, Ian McShane, and Michael Rooker. Featuring music written, arranged, & performed by Wynton Marsalis. Seems to be a ravishing retelling of his life's story, perhaps not the most polished, but full of passion & zeal. Here's the first official trailer (+ original poster) for Dan Pritzker's Bolden,...

"You gotta find what's in a person's soul before you can posses them." Dark Star Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie "rogue love story" drama titled Heartlock, featuring a clever romantic escape story set inside a prison. The film follows a female prison guard who can't help her feelings for a new inmate named Lee. However, seasoned convict Continental has taken Lee under his wing, in hopes of persuading him to exploit his new love interest to help them escape. Heartlock stars Lesley-Ann Brandt, along with Alexander Dreymon, Erik Laray Harvey, Cedric Young, Wayne David Parker, and Jacqueline Williams. This looks pretty slick, perhaps even a little too smart for its own good, but with a nifty concept. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jon Kauffman's Heartlock, direct from YouTube: Heartlock is a rogue love story centered on a female prison guard named Tera...

The next Marvel TV show to arrive on Netflix will be Luke Cage season 2, which will see the return of Mike Colter’s Hero of Harlem for the first time since he teamed up with his fellow street-wise crime-fighters in 2017’s The Defenders. Some of the big things fans are excited to see in the series’ sophomore run include a new villain, Mustafa Shakir’s Bushmaster, and a team-up with Finn Jones’ Iron Fist.
Now, in a new interview, showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has shared a bunch of intriguing details about the upcoming season. First off, he teased what we can expect from Bushmaster, the latest crime boss threatening Luke’s hometown. Appearing on Espn's First Take, Luke Cage actor Mike Colter was asked to explain the show's decision to kill off Mahershala Ali's Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes roughly halfway through the series. Aside from the fact that Ali is probably the most sought-after African-American male lead in Hollywood right now, the two primary threats that arose in Cottonmouth's wake - Erik Laray Harvey's Diamondback and Alfre Woodard's Black Mariah just didn't have the same compelling backstory and charisma, leading a lot of viewers to complain that the show lost focus in the back-half just to service a big, knockdown, drag-out fight in the finale. "The decision to do that was done way before we started production. It's a lot of people that's involved in this. When you do it on paper, here's what it is. It's like running a play in football. You do it in practice. It works.

The hoodie has as much to say about it’s wearer as, say, the white t-shirt does. By which I mean that, depending on context, it can say anything. The white t-shirt can imply clean, erotic, the worker – or a combination of all three. In the eyes of contemporary media, the hoodie largely suggests youth. Shady youth, someone not keen to reveal their identity because they are planning on robbing you or worse. Put the hoodie on a black man and it is pretty much akin to walking down the street in a striped jumper with a sack marked ‘swag’. Luke Cage is not set to change that perception, but it does make us reevaluate the role of the hoodie on screen. For the first time in a long time, perhaps ever, a black man in a hoodie in Harlem is not a suspect. In fact he’s a goddamn hero.

Based in Harlem, Luke Cage, Netflix’s latest Marvel show, has a different feel to Daredevil and Jessica Jones but lives in the same universe as the two. Does he have enough strength to not only save Harlem though but to stand out in his own show?
After the events of Jessica Jones, we find Cage (Mike Colter) in Harlem trying to live a quiet life. Tragedy pulls him back to the superhero life though and he’s forced to take on Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali) while all the time trying to keep his secret a past from the ever vigilant Misty Knight (Simone Missick).
In many ways Luke Cage is familiar territory, there are obvious stylistic references to Daredevil and plenty of teases of the “Lawyer” we know and love. The main focus of the show though is to celebrate the and give a voice to the streets of Harlem.
