Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa and W1A’s Hugh Skinner will star in a National Theatre revival of Oscar Wilde’s play about courtships, betrothals, and confused identities. The Importance of Being Earnest also stars three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D. Clarke playing the imperious Lady Bracknell.
Director Max Webster, making his Nt debut, told Deadline exclusively that casting Gatwa and Skinner as the idle bachelors Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing -both leading double lives – who pursue two young women, both determined to marry someone called Ernest, and with Clarke as the dreadnaught dowager decreeing her own rules of class, taste, and propriety, was “a dream come true.”

English actor Christopher Eccleston has been a popular name in TV, movies, and stage alike. From playing the 9th incarnation of The Doctor in Doctor Who to playing both Hamlet as well as Macbeth on the stage, Eccleston’s artistry is admirable.
Christopher Eccleston in Doctor Who
Eccleston, though he usually prefers to avoid big budget productions, was part of two pretty big franchises in his career. One was the 2009 movie, G. I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, and the other was the MCU’s Thor: The Dark World in 2011. Unfortunately, the actor hated being a part of both these films.
Christopher Eccleston Regretted Being in Thor 2
Christopher Eccleston played the main antagonist, Malekith, in Thor: The Dark World. The movie in itself was one of Marvel’s least liked productions. And the character of Malekith was one of the most underdeveloped, with almost no background story to give it more depth.

As the co-chair of DC Studios, James Gunn has the key to the DC Universe as he and Peter Safran prepare for the next generation of superhero storytelling.
One film that excites fans is The Authority, a movie about a team of anti-heroes known as the anti-Justice League.
Gunn recently updated fans on the film’s development after one of his Threads followers asked if any of the members of the anti-hero team had been cast.
“We won’t green light a film until we have a finished script we’re happy with and, in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished,” Gunn shared. “This is why some projects are moving faster than anticipated and others more slowly. It’s always gonna be quality first no matter what.”

The official trailer for Doctor Who season 14 sees Ncuti Gatwa dive into the role of the Fifteenth Doctor on the iconic British show.
The two-minute look at the upcoming installment gives audiences a sneak peek at Gatwa and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday as they journey through time and space in the Tardis, making stops in the 1960s, Regency-era England (“Oh my, Bridgerton!“), when the dinosaurs walked the Earth and more

Over Hollywood’s century-long history, women have played an integral part both as actresses on the screen, as well as creators behind the scenes. Many have fought to establish themselves in a male-dominated world, and have earned their place in history alongside the best, even managing to show out at the most prestigious awards ceremony — the Academy Awards. In celebration of Women’s History Month 2024, and the recent 96th Oscars ceremony, following is a list of 26 women who have earned eight or more Oscar nominations. Scroll through our photo gallery below.
One area in which women have dominated Oscar nominations is writing. Going all the way back to the second ceremony, Josephine Lovett earned a bid for “Our Dancing Daughters,” while Bess Meredyth received two noms for “A Woman of Affairs” and “Wonder of Women.” The next year, Frances Marion became the first woman to triumph in a non-gendered category,...

Grant Gustin is arguably the most popular actor ever to helm the role of Barry Allen/ The Flash, who played the character in The CW series as part of the Arrowverse. The actor has built a dedicated fan base, and DC fans have been begging James Gunn to replace Ezra Miller with Grant Gustin as Barry Allen in his rebooted Dcu. For those wondering if he would ever return as The Flash, the actor has given one condition under which he would do so.
Grant Gustin as The Flash
Earlier, he said that he would return to reprise the role only if James Gunn asked him to do so. And at such a time, Gunn recently gave some hope to the fans as he shared his interest in working with Gustin. However, it’s not sure for which role Gunn wants him. It might not be Barry Allen.

Progress, but not perfect.
Thirty-two percent of the 2024 Oscar nominees are women, tying the all-time high first reached in 2021, a new study by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, and Adobe Foundation has found.
Twenty percent of nominees in the 19 categories (the ones related to feature-film awards) they examined were from an underrepresented racial/ethnic group. That ranks third all-time, behind 2021’s 24 percent and 2019’s 21 percent. Women of color hold 5.7 percent of the nominations in 2024; the all-time high was again in 2021, with 11 percent.
“The study reveals how often the Academy Awards recognize the talent and work of women and people of color,” Dr. Smith said in a statement sent to media. “For those who want to say that the Awards are improving, it is critical to note that in 2024, the percentage of women and people of color nominated for awards in feature categories still falls far below proportional representation.

With more than 70 schools offering costume design instruction, what makes such a program stand out? Is it the proximity to film studios and theaters in the major entertainment hubs of L.A., London and New York? The variety of courses, from historical design to 3D fabric printing, or simply a well-rounded curriculum? Or is it the chance to network with award-winning alums and industry insiders, coupled with portfolio development and postgrad job placement?
Whatever the consideration, students, as soon-to-be narrative storytellers, face an ever-changing field with digital design technology at the forefront as the industry tries to figure out what to do with the practice of artificial intelligence. As Bill Brewer, Uncsa’s co-director of the Costume Design & Technology program, notes, “We believe that because we tell stories about the human condition, our industry will continue to rely on the artistry of humans.” Scad is also addressing AI, with workshops...

The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) have officially set off in the Tardis after the Doctor Who Christmas special, and in addition to the mystery of her parents, they’re heading into a new season with a few lingering foes out there that could become a concern. After all, the 60th anniversary specials featured a warning from The Meep about the “boss,” there’s the one the Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris) wouldn’t face, the Toymaker’s legions, and whoever picked up the tooth with The Master inside. Is that on The Doctor’s mind, or is he just moving from adventure to adventure and whenever something pops up, he’ll worry about it? “Bits of both,” Gatwa tells TV Insider. “That’s the magic of the show, is that there are standalone episodes and always an overriding arc to the whole season that each little episode, it’s like Lego pieces.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Doctor Who 2023 Holiday Special “The Church on Ruby Road.”] “Once upon a time, late on Christmas Eve, a stranger came to the church on Ruby Road. She carried in her arms the most precious gift of all: a newborn child, a baby girl. Just before midnight, she left her daughter on the steps of the church. The child was taken in, and they named her Ruby after the place where she was found. As for the mother, she was never seen again. No one ever knew her name, until that night, a time traveler came to call, a traveler known as The Doctor.” With that, Doctor Who introduces us to Ruby as a baby, then shows her later as a young adult (Millie Gibson), having been adopted by Clara (Michelle Greenidge) and still knowing nothing about her parents. There's been much talk of late about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is on the decline, that superhero movies have become oversaturated, and that the general public has been fed at least one multiverse too many.
There's truth to that statement if box office numbers are any indication. And I'd argue that some of that decline is in the over-bloated plotlines that fans got tired of keeping straight. But there's an upside to the multiverse phenomenon: Setting stories in different worlds with different rules opens the door to fresh storytelling. Even more so, telling a tale in one of these alternative realities unshackles the writer from being beholden to the machinations of the overarching sagas the MCU likes to tell.
That's been the appeal of Marvel's animated series, "What If...?" The show takes the multiverse premise and is given the freedom to create fantastical situations that would never occur on...

Patrick Stewart has noted in multiple interviews, at convention appearances, and in his new autobiography "Making It So: A Memoir," that he began to lose his hair as early as age 17. Throughout his decades-long career, Stewart was rarely seen wearing wigs or hairpieces, at least on screen. One might stumble upon his performance as Sejanus in the famed 1976 miniseries "I, Claudius," and see him sporting a curly-haired wig. Or perhaps one might catch his 1974 performance in the BBC's version of "Antony and Cleopatra" wherein his Enobarbus had a mere receding hairline. In both cases, Stewart doesn't look natural. A hairless Patrick Stewart is now so familiar to audiences through his highly visible performances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and in multiple "X-Men" films that it's difficult to accept him with hair.
But there was a time when Stewart's baldness caused him anxiety. Evidently, he owned a special...

Warning: contains Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “The Star Beast” and several modern Doctor Who episodes
The internet is still whirring after that explosive first episode of the three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, with the return of David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and his beloved ex-companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).
There was certainly a lot to take in: “The Star Beast” saw an alien spaceship crash-landing in London, the arrival of the adorably fluffy Meep and sinister, bug-eyed Wrarth Warriors, the return of Unit (the international intelligence taskforce that investigates alien activity), and the very real threat that if Donna remembers who The Doctor is, she’ll die.
We also met Donna’s family, including her husband Shaun and daughter Rose, whom we eventually learn has genetically absorbed some of the metacrisis that threatened Donna’s life, subconsciously giving her some of The Doctor and Donna’s memories.

The gifts don’t stop in December at Disney+! In addition to holiday festivities all month long like the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade and the CMA Country Christmas Special, the House of Mouse streamer will soon become the home for Whovians and Demigods.
Disney+ will deck the halls with a glut of Gallifreyan adventures and the premiere of the long-awaited “Doctor Who” anniversary specials. The first of the three debuted on BBC One and on the Disney streamer on Nov. 25, but the other two David Tennant and Catherine Tate-led serials will arrive on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Later in the month, ring in Christmas with the franchise’s holiday special with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson getting their full-episode debuts.
And the wait is over for “Percy Jackson” fans, who will see the beloved Rick Riordan book series get a (hopefully) respectful adaptation with the premiere of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the first Doctor Who 60th anniversary special “The Star Beast.”] “Why did this face come back?” Though that question is asked throughout “The Star Beast,” it goes unanswered thus far. But Doctor Who’s very fun, delightful, nostalgia-filled, cinematic, and, at times, funny first 60th anniversary special, featuring brilliant performances by David Tennant and Catherine Tate as The Doctor and Donna Noble again does solve one major problem. At times, it feels like Tennant and Tate never left and The Doctor and Donna never parted — especially during a moment involving his sonic screwdriver (used in impressive ways). As Donna says near the end, “it’s like the old days.” But there’s the matter of aliens running around and, as The Doctor and Donna recap somewhat awkwardly for viewers to open the episode, the fact that she saved the universe by taking the power of a ...

Patrick Troughton’s final Doctor Who story The War Games is reportedly next in line to be turned into a colour story.
Of the many treats for Doctor Who fans this month, the colourized re-edit of The Daleks is perhaps the most surprising. Terry Nation’s classic story has been edited from its original seven episodes down to a 75 minute colour feature, that’s going to be debuting on BBC iPlayer next week.
Furthermore, a physical media release for The Daleks In Colour has also been earmarked for next February, and you can pick up a copy of it here.
Now though, we learn that taking one black and white story and adding colour to it might just be the beginning. According to a fresh rumour, a second story is already being lined up.

‘Right at the very beginning!’ – answered nobody, ever to the question of where a newcomer to Doctor Who should start watching. This is a show with almost 900 episodes, six decades of production, and a megaton of baggage.
To start with 1963’s “An Unearthly Child” now and try to watch everything, plus spin-offs, before you could get involved with the Ncuti Gatwa era? You’d need a Tardis.
So where to jump in? Now that BBC iPlayer is host to the whole Doctor Who kit and kaboodle in the UK as part of its new “Whoniverse” division, it’s a very good question. That’s why we asked it to our writhing nest of Doctor Who experts. And here’s what they recommend:

The landscape of iconic science fiction is about to be enriched even further. With the release of the highly anticipated trailer, ‘Doctor Who‘ is set to mark its 60th Anniversary with a series of specials, and the premiere dates are finally confirmed for viewers eagerly waiting around the globe.
The trailer offers an intriguing glimpse into the upcoming episodes, hinting at what appears to be an alien invasion looming ominously over a world. We are introduced to Unit’s headquarters, which resembles the iconic Avengers tower from the Marvel universe.
As the narrative tension builds, fans witness the debut of a new villain – the Toymaker, portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris in what marks his first appearance in the ‘Doctor Who’ series. One notable moment in the trailer suggests a possible regeneration of Donna Noble, a topic we touched upon in a previous article. This development might provide insight into her much-anticipated return to the series.

“Only Murders in the Building” has some classic inspirations.
In a new interview with Variety, series costume designer Dana Covarrubias shares how she crafted star Selena Gomez’s stylish looks for the mystery-comedy show.

“I put her in chunky- soled boots and big puffy coats and jackets that create this sense of a protective armour around her,” she said of Gomez’s season 1 style.
As the first season went on, and Gomez’s Mabel got closer to Steve Martin and Martin Short’s Charles and Oliver, her wardrobe opened up, too.
The character underwent even more change in season 2, but because there was no time jump between the first two seasons, Covarrubias had to get creative about showing that growth in her costumers.

Subtle details in costume design, hairstyling and even production design showed the growth and progression of Selena Gomez’s Mabel in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Season 2 begins where the first left off — Mabel is the prime suspect after being found by the side of the dead body of Bunny, who lives in the same building as Mabel, Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin).
When audiences were first introduced to Mabel in Season 1, she’s someone who is trying to protect herself. Costume designer Dana Covarrubias says, “I put her in chunky- soled boots and big puffy coats and jackets that create this sense of a protective armor around her.”
As the season progresses and she begins to connect with Oliver and Charles, she softens up. Solving a murder and being implicated in a murder brings the podcasting trio closer together.

The Guinness World Records once listed the BBC’s Doctor Who as the “most successful Science Fiction television series in the world,” and this year the show turns an impressive 60 years old. Despite its grand age, it’s not demonstrating any signs of slowing down.

Tony Bennett's first record, "Because of You" was released in 1952 and it instantly codified the entertainer as one of the music world's great crooners. In 1962, his 15th record, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was certified platinum by the RIAA, but that was after he had already established himself with Count Basie and his Orchestra and as a great fan of songwriter Harold Arlen. All told, he released 61 records in his decades-long career, not including his eight albums of collaborations and duets. He sang with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Mariah Carey, Bono, Sting, Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, and many others. Most recently, he released two collaborations with Lady Gaga in 2018 and 2021. Bennett passed away on July 21, 2023 at the age of 96. He will be deeply missed.

Indira Varma, the Game Of Thrones veteran most recently seen in Obi-Wan Kenobi is adding to her genre credentials. She's now landed a role as apparent villain The Duchess in the next series of Doctor Who.
Varma, who already has Who-niverse credentials following a two-episode guest spot on Torchwood back in 2006, will be presumably causing trouble for Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor next year.
"I’m thrilled to be in Doctor Who and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him," Varma says. "I loved playing Suzie Costello for Russell T. Davies in Torchwood so am thrilled to be entering this world again."
Says Davies, "I’m overjoyed to be reunited with Indira after our Torchwood days, and this part is truly spectacular! A whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror.

In order to play the role of Nebula, the murderous mostly-android character in James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies, actress Karen Gillan had to undergo a lengthy and uncomfortable makeup process. According to makeup artist David White, Gillan's facial prosthesis was constructed of five specially fitted plates that would be glued to her over the course of about four and a half hours. She also had to wear incredibly thick contact lenses to black out her eyes and, to accommodate the cranial appliances, shave her head. Gillan shaved and remained bald throughout the shooting schedules of each of her Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances.
This meant that she was without hair throughout most of 2013, when the first "Guardians" movie was being filmed. One can find photos of that film's premiere, and see that her hair was still growing out.

Composer Murray Gold has joined the sci-fi drama series and once again work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on his musical scores.
These will appear in the three November specials featuring David Tennant as The Fourteenth Doctor and then in the episodes starring Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor, beginning over Christmas.
