Throughout cinematic history, audiences have been enthralled by an array of villainous characters, ranging from the intellectually formidable to the utterly deranged. While many villains adhere to conventional tropes, there are those whose portrayal transcends cliches, etching a lasting impression on viewers’ minds.
Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight
One such character is the Joker, whose many interpretations so far have showcased the immense talent of the actors who brought him to life. Cesar Romero’s portrayal in the 1960s Batman television series marked the character’s first appearance, setting a playful yet sinister tone. However, it was Heath Ledger’s portrayal in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight that truly redefined the role. Ledger’s depiction of the Joker as a symbol of chaos and anarchy resonated deeply with audiences and left an indelible mark.

After desperately clinging to his dream project, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, when the film got postponed by decades, Terry Gilliam shifted his focus to The Brothers Grimm. Making a winning combination from the start, Gilliam used his specialization in the bleak and strange to turn Heath Ledger and Matt Damon’s 2005 movie into the most beloved, dark fairy tales of all time.
Matt Damon in The Brothers Grimm
Although The Brothers Grimm featured a stellar cast including Jonathan Pryce, Monica Bellucci, Lena Headey, and more, it was reported that Terry Gilliam initially wanted Johnny Depp instead of Matt Damon. Considering Gilliam’s preference towards Depp, even Damon was baffled when he was hired for the $105M movie, in place of the Pirates star.

Everybody loves a hero, but nothing is quite as satisfying as a villain redemption arc. Television is full of bad guys who went good, with various catalysts that pushed them towards their atonement. Deception, murder, and cruelty -- these TV villains were capable of it all, but the promise of love, a quest to be truly understood, and a desire to be better pushed them beyond their comfort zones and into the ranks of heroes.
From Game of Thrones to The Vampire Diaries, television shows love to depict nuanced characters who are initially antagonistic but choose a better path somewhere down the line. These redeemed villains are incredibly satisfying to watch and add new dimensions to already great shows.
Updated on March 15th, 2024 by Fawzia Khan: A good redemption arc never goes out of style. An evolving character is a pleasure to watch on TV, and some television shows did these plotlines extremely well.

Best Drama Supporting Actress is the only Emmy acting category “The Morning Show” has yet to crack, but it’s now the one the series could dominate like only one other show has managed to. Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Julianna Margulies, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor are all eligible for the Apple TV+ drama in the category this year, and if they all make the cut, “The Morning Show” will join “The White Lotus: Sicily” as the only shows to nab five drama supporting actress nominations in a single year.
“The White Lotus: Sicily” set the record last year with bids for Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, Simona Tabasco and eventual champ Jennifer Coolidge. Before that, the record for a series in the category was four nominees in one year, which only two shows had been able to field: “Game of Thrones” in 2019 and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2021.

"Winter is coming" from Game of Thrones became iconic, detached from its source, symbolizing the show's essence. The dream scene in Dallas broke TV narrative rules and is widely parodied, known for retroactive retconning. Blackadder's poignant anti-war message in the finale overshadowed the sitcom, showcasing the true human cost of conflict.
Occasionally a TV scene has such an impact on popular culture that it managed to overtake the show it was from and become even more famous than its source material. This can occur because a memorable line gets imbued into popular culture, a classic moment gets parodied across many other TV shows, or, in some cases, the scene took a life of its own and became a viral sensation online. Through sheer coincidence or carefully mapped-out planning, certain scenes from TV series can outshine everything else that occurred in the show.

Lena Headey delivered one of the finest performances on the small screen with her portrayal of Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones. The diabolical queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Cersei is arguably the show's main villain, a wicked, selfish, and narrow-minded woman without any boundaries or remorse. Cersei kills anyone in her way, becoming increasingly more numb as the show progresses.

By the look of it, Zack Snyder’s Gerard Butler-led 2007 action-adventure movie, 300, seems to be dominated by alpha males with violence radiating through their eyes. However, Snyder, co-writer and the director of the movie, feels differently.

While the director confirmed the episodic rerun of the popular action saga adding up to its universe, he explained that there might be some elements of homoeroticism. In its essence, Snyder emphasized that he would make what Frank Miller and Lynn Varley’s comic book dictates. Also, the director sees his 2007 movie to be one of the gayest movies ever made.

300 was a highly stylized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae adapted from the comic by Frank Miller, and director Zack Snyder recently spoke about the movie on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Although historians have found plenty of evidence of homosexuality in Ancient Greece, 300 doesn’t really touch upon it. When asked if he ever thought “about putting a bunch of gay stuff in there,” Snyder replied that he was adapting a comic, not real history. However, the director did say that he’s been talking about a 300 series which would include more of those elements.
“It’s Frank’s book. I made what Frank wrote,” Snyder said. “And we’ve been talking about doing a series where I really wanted to introduce those concepts a lot more because I just feel like it’s important. If we go forward and do more in the ‘300’ universe,...

TV adaptations offer more time for in-depth storytelling and character development, making them often superior to film adaptations. Genres like sci-fi, fantasy, and non-fiction books find success on TV, showcasing the potential of the medium for diverse source material. Shows like "Game of Thrones" and "The Handmaid's Tale" excel at bringing complex narratives to life, proving TV's adaptability.
Plenty of movie adaptations of books struggle to recapture what makes the source material so popular, but there is a lot of evidence which suggests that TV could actually be the superior medium for adaptations. TV adaptations have a few innate advantages over movies. Their extended length means that they don't always have to make as many cuts as movies do. If it takes a few seasons to do a book's story justice, then TV shows can afford this luxury. TV shows are also able to incorporate more characters and plot lines.

MGM+ is gearing up for a swift return to Beacon 23 this spring. After a promising first season for the sci-fi series, Halan (Stephan James) will be back on April 7 to continue unraveling the titular space lighthouse, now with Aleph on board. A new trailer shared today sees him confronting a military attack on the Beacon, which has now fully become his prison. He'll have to rely on a few new inhabitants to help him escape and find peace, but he's also left to decipher what happened to Aster (Lena Headey) after Season 1's climactic finale.

Game of Thrones launched the careers of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss into the stratosphere after the success of their HBO series. Benioff and Weiss became Hollywood’s most wanted and even bagged themselves a Star Wars project before wrapping Game of Thrones. However, when the final few seasons didn’t deliver, Benioff and Weiss’ schedule cleared up very quickly, and their reputation took a big hit. Game of Thrones Season 8 garnered a lot of negative attention for failing to resolve plotlines, questionable character decisions, and overall bad writing. While there are countless complaints with Season 8, such as Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) leaving Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) for Cersei (Lena Headey), or Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) becoming entirely useless to the story, the most controversial moment was when Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) killed the Night King during Season 8 Episode 3.

Game of Thrones had everyone’s attention when it used to stream. The fantasy period drama was full of twists and turns that would startle you in every episode. The series stars Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and others based on George Rr Martin’s book, A Song of Fire and Ice.
The eighth season left everyone disappointed. The loyal fans were displeased with the conclusions given to Daenerys, Jon Snow, Arya and Bran Stark. The show’s creators, David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, have opened up on what exactly went wrong.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Benioff stated that when one signs a five-year deal with a company, one wants the company to be stable. It will help one be alone and do their work without worrying about it being bought by a phone company.

One of the most prominent antagonists in Game of Thrones is Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). The eldest child of Lord Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), Cersei is used to getting everything she wants, thanks to her father's position as Hand of the King to King Aerys II Targaryen (David Rintoul). She was also drawn to her twin brother, Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), with whom she developed an incestuous relationship, which continued when she eventually married Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) after he overthrew the Targaryens.

Not all celebrity cameos on TV shows hit the mark; some can feel out of place and disrupt the show's tone and authenticity. Even well-intentioned appearances, like Ed Sheeran on Game of Thrones, can result in awkward and jarring moments for viewers. The mismatch between celebrities and TV show themes can lead to forced attempts at garnering attention rather than enhancing the storyline.
Celebrity cameos are a regular occurrence on TV shows, but there are occasions when the appearance of a well-known figure seems completely random. The practice of stunt casting famous names, whether actors, musicians, or personalities, onto series has existed as long as television itself. At best, big-name cameos can tap into the zeitgeist and generate buzz for popular shows. However, when improperly matched or gratuitously inserted without purpose, a celebrity showing up in character can feel jarringly odd and take audiences out of the fictional settings they are invested in.

AI-generated art turns the characters of Game of Thrones into characters in an animated Disney classic. There are currently three animated Game of Thrones spinoffs in development, with one telling the story of the Sea Snakes. George R.R. Martin's vast and violent fantasy world could be well suited to the medium of animation.
Game of Thrones characters get the Disney classical animation treatment in whimsical art. Based on the books by author George R.R. Martin, the hit fantasy first released on HBO in 2011, chronicling the battles and political power plays between the ruling families of Westeros as they vie for the Iron Throne. Game of Thrones came to an end in 2019 with season 8, though the world of the show lives on in the form of various spinoffs.

Sarah Connor's flaws don't diminish her impact in the Terminator franchise. Linda Hamilton may not see Sarah as an icon, but her character's strength and power continue to inspire. Sarah Connor, like Ellen Ripley, challenges gender norms in sci-fi, paving the way for strong female action heroes.
Terminator star Linda Hamilton is not so sure that her character Sarah Connor should be considered an icon. First assuming the role of the mother of humanity’s savior in 1984’s The Terminator and leader of the human resistance against Skynet, Hamilton would later return for both 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate. Other actors who have also stepped into Sarah Connor's role include Game of Thrones co-stars Emilia Clarke (Terminator: Genysis) and Lena Headey (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles).

TV reunions often evoke strong emotions, with characters like Jin and Sun in Lost demonstrating the power of love and resilience. Separations in shows like Game of Thrones create opportunities for emotional reunions, as seen with Jon and Sansa's heartfelt connection. The lasting impact of well-crafted characters and relationships shines through in TV reunions, from The Last of Us to Twin Peaks and beyond.
Few events on TV can have the same emotional impact as characters reuniting after time away, and some stand out for constantly making audiences cry. The extended length of the television medium allows audiences to connect with characters in a profound and meaningful way, making their interactions far more impactful. For different reasons, TV characters have found themselves separated from each other, and the reunions have made for some memorable moments.

Linda Hamilton has expressed disinterest in returning as Sarah Connor in the Terminator franchise, stating the story has been "done to death". Although Sarah Connor is considered an iconic character by fans, Hamilton herself does not see her that way. Hamilton asserts that she is very different from her character in real life, despite fans treating her like a savior.
Linda Hamilton is almost as synonymous with the Terminator franchise as its titular mechanical assassin-turned-ally, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, after three times out in the world of time-traveling robots and machines ruling the world, Sarah Connor will probably not be returning to screens again – at least not with Hamilton in the role.
Hamilton originally portrayed Sarah Connor in James Cameron's 1984 film The Terminator, and reprised her role again in the masterpiece sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. While the actress then ducked out of the franchise, making way for...

Game of Thrones faced innumerable challenges within its first season, as the dense material of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series was challenging to translate into a compelling dramatic story. Beyond the efforts needed to explain the rules of Westeros to average viewers and pull off several major action sequences, the first season of Game of Thrones had to introduce fascinating, dynamic characters that audiences would be willing to invest in over a prolonged period of time. Few performances on Game of Thrones were as instantly iconic as Lena Headey's, even if the show’s writing may have failed her in the end. Headey’s performance remained one of the show's most nuanced. But, as great as Headey was in the role, it was almost Gillian Anderson who was cast as Cersei Lannister.

Subtle clues like a particular song or a character's demeanor often foreshadow TV character deaths, setting up viewer anticipation. Iconic TV character deaths, like in Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, linger with audiences due to their shocking and unique execution. Television shows often use narrative cues and character interactions to hint at impending deaths, leaving viewers emotionally invested.
While some TV deaths are completely shocking, some shows prepared audiences with scenes that indicated a death was coming. There are several ways a TV series can give away an impending character death. Shows like Game of Thrones integrated subtle foreshadowing even in their most shocking death scenes. Other shows have used narrative clichés like a character having a particularly happy or redeeming moment, which perceptive television audiences might receive as a hint that their time is up.

Maisie Williams, a child actor on Game of Thrones struggled under immense pressure and attention throughout the show's run. Williams felt like she lost her identity along the way and still struggles to reflect on her time with the show. Balancing academics with on-set work, away from home for months, posed unique challenges for young actors on Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones dominated the media during its run, but one child actor struggled immensely under the pressure. The show focused on an ensemble cast and many of its cast members were under the age of 18 while filming season 1. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) were among the young cast members, and each had arcs of their own that took up major portions of the show.
While it helped them boost their careers, life was not always easy for the members of the Game of Thrones cast.

Linda Hamilton's response to being cast in Stranger Things season 5 is mixed, as she is excited to join but feels like an "impostor" in the '80s-set show that she has loved. The show intentionally evokes nostalgia for '80s horror and sci-fi tropes, and Hamilton's adds to its nostalgic sensibilities. Hamilton's role in season 5 has not been revealed, but as a series regular, she is expected to bring her action-heroine expertise to the unfolding drama against threats from Vecna and the Upside Down.

As Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) once said, "When you play the Game of Thrones, you win, or you die." Unfortunately, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss chose the second option when finishing their groundbreaking HBO series. The saying ‘Game of Thrones died with Tywin Lannister’ has echoed across the internet since the disappointing series finale in 2019, but there is little truth in the statement. Generally, Seasons 5 and 6 are somewhat of a mixed bag, with a steep drop-off in quality during Season 7, followed by the disastrous Season 8.

Actors on TV shows can be replaced for various reasons, such as changes to the show or contractual obligations.
