This article includes spoilers for Shōgun (and Game of Thrones too).
It is a spectacular sight. Five armies, each serving one of the great clans and regents of feudal Japan at the end of the Sengoku period, gather on a field at Sekigahara. Nothing less than the fate of the realm hangs in the balance, and Lord Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira) is about to be delivered the fatal blow when a letter reveals his betrothed, Lady Ochiba-no-kata (Fumi Nikaido), has thrown in her lot with their mortal enemy. The slaughter which is to commence against him will be immense.
… Or so we’re told. Because all of this devastating spectacle is a tease, a trick or shadow on the wall, as one might say. It’s a vision of the future gifted from one man to another who is already dead. We are supposed to take it on faith that...

Don’t despair about the end of another non-existent British summer – UK TV always gets good when the weather turns, as the nights draw in and we all retreat indoors, finally getting sick of rainy barbecues and being chased by wasps in pub gardens.
This year is no different, so you can expect your 2023 autumn TV watchlist to include some compelling original dramas, from true crime shows covering some of the UK’s most shocking cases to enthralling depictions of real-life events, from the arrival of the Windrush generation to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Throw in some time-travelling crime-solving, mediaeval sword fights and a criminal gang on the run from a ruthless assassin, and we’ll be enjoying our self-enforced hibernation in front of the telly all the way until Christmas. Here’s what’s coming up, in order of release date.

Film and television productions are chaotic, whether they are made on a shoestring budget or have all the money in the world at their disposal. You have dozens, if nor hundreds, of people on set always racing against the clock, the weather, the light, the producers breathing down your neck, and so much more that the idea that every single detail about a finished movie or show would be perfect is utter nonsense. With so many moving parts, something is bound to go wrong, and you just have to storm ahead.
In large scale productions, those details are even more granular. You'd think that because of the wealth of resources available that everything would be raked over with a fine-toothed comb, but they are still working under a deadline trying to wrangle thousands of artists and craftspeople's hard work. Occasionally, a small mistake slips through the cracks and makes it into the final project,...

The night is dark and full of complaints about the final season of "Game of Thrones." Yes, we know it's been well over four years since the highly divisive finale to what many once considered to be one of the best shows while it was on the air. But it's one thing for fans to refuse to move on; it's another thing altogether for the actual cast to be the ones still expressing their disappointment over how creators and showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff brought the story to an end.
As much as Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen and her descent into outright villainy tends to represent everything that fans consider lackluster (to put it mildly) about the last stretch of episodes, let's not forget all the collateral damage along the way. One such victim was Varys, the "Master of Whisperers" who played such a crucial role throughout much of the series.

Four years on and one spin-off later, fans of HBO‘s “Game Of Thrones” still haven’t forgiven David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for botching the show’s final episodes. And neither has some of the series cast, apparently. EW reports that Conleth Hill, who played Varys in each of the show’s eight seasons, still thinks the show’s ending was “rushed” but feels a little better about it now than he did in 2019.

Los Angeles, Aug 4 (Ians) Actor Conleth Hill, who played the eunuch Lord Varys on all eight seasons of ‘Game of Thrones’ series, is opening up on why the final seasons of the series drew complaints.
The reason for the disgruntled fan reactions, Hill said in a Times UK interview, was that the series showrunners were not on the same page, reports ‘Deadline’.
The disagreements between HBO and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in the final season, which went beyond author George R.R. Martin source material led to confusing plot developments, Hill said.
“Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all,” Hill told The Times. “I just felt frustrated with the last couple of (seasons) because Varys wasn’t the all-knowing character he had been. I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end it and the studio HBO wanted to do another.

Conleth Hill told the The Times UK in a recent interview that he was “inconsolable” when he found out his character, Varys, was being killed off “Game of Thrones.” Hill was a regular face on the HBO fantasy series since its first season until Varys was burned to death by a dragon in the final season’s penultimate episode. By that point, Hill admitted, he had grown “frustrated” with the series for not staying true to his character’s all-knowing ways.
“I thought I’d done something wrong,” Hill said. “Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all. Though it had its controversies and a finale that left many fans wanting, "Game of Thrones" was a revelation. Based on the books by George R.R. Martin, the HBO series did things you weren't supposed to do in a show. Characters you love and who appear to be important to the overarching story could die at any moment and in the most brutal way. Little children became murderers, and dragons weren't introduced until the finale of the first season. It had more twists and turns than a bowl of spaghetti and lore that went back thousands of years into the world's fictional past.
"Game of Thrones" was full of amazing characters, including Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage. Tyrion was an incredibly nuanced and powerful character that stands alongside some of the greatest in TV history. It's impossible to imagine anyone but Peter Dinklage in the role, but as it turns out,...

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Magpie Murders finale.
With Magpie Murders, you get double bubble – one investigation in the ‘real’ world as literary editor Susan Ryeland sleuths her way around modern-day Suffolk after the death of one of her authors, plus a 1950s-set dramatisation of that author’s latest detective novel. Both stories are told side by side on screen as actors play dual roles, and Anthony Horowitz’s adaptation of his own novel keeps multiple plates spinning. All that, plus a truly lovely wardrobe worn by the impeccably dressed Lesley Manville in the lead role of Ryeland, and a new instant favourite detective in Tim McMullan’s Poirot-tinged Atticus Pünd. What more could cosy crime fans ask for?
Another series is one thing – a wish that’s already been granted. Expect Moonflower Murders to start filming in Dublin later this year, ready to debut on the BBC...

Participating in a fantasy franchise as big and beloved as HBO’s Game of Thrones inevitably means adopting a strange relationship with the public.
Surely not a day goes by when Emilia Clarke isn’t questioned about the location and health of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons. And it will be a long time before Kit Harrington stops hearing “you know nothing, Jon Snow.” Still, when Matthew Needham (Endeavour) signed on to portray murderous gossipmonger Larys Strong in the Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, he couldn’t have possibly anticipated the moment that fans would eventually latch onto.
“The amount of people who have come up to me and said ‘I felt soiled after that scene. I felt like I needed to take a shower … ‘” Needham tells Den of Geek.
Of course, “that scene” refers to the Larys moment that you’re already probably thinking of. Yes, the one where...

Maisie Williams has made a candid admission about the quality of Game of Thrones.
The series was widely acclaimed in its early seasons, but divided fans with the final six episodes, which aired in 2019.
Since the ending, several stars of the show have defended how David Benioff and Db Weiss wrapped the story up despite complaints that they rushed Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline too much.
After the finale aired, a petition calling on HBO to remake the final season was launched by one disgruntled person, and over a million people signed it.
Williams, who played Arya Stark, has revealed that she recently rewatched the entire series during a chat about the series with her brother, Talfuin, on his Twitch channel.
"You know, I rewatched it all recently," she said, adding: “Erm, it was... It definitely fell off at the end.”
Giggling, she continued: “But it started really strong. I was heartbroken when Ned died,...

This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 9.
There’s a new bastard in King’s Landing for House of the Dragon, and no, we don’t mean Rhaenyra’s illegitimate offspring with Harwin Strong. In a show that’s already painted the likes of Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) as villains in the race to the Iron Throne, Matthew Needham’s Larys Strong is giving Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) a run for his money as the show’s most loathsome hate figure.
Larys is already being called the show’s very own Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aiden Gillen) with just a dash of Varys (Conleth Hill). Ironic that his name sounds like a hybrid of the pair. Known as Larys “Clubfoot” Strong, he’s the current Lord of Harrenhal, Master of Whispers, and Lord Confessor for the Greens. As his title suggests, the Master...

The night is dark and full of spoilers. Go no further if you haven't seen the latest episode of "House of the Dragon."
When you play the game of thrones, you either win ... or you die.
Everyone knows that successions are far from a simple matter in the "Game of Thrones" universe, and this latest episode of "House of the Dragon" was no different. After yet another time jump last week, "The Green Council" zeroed in on the immediate aftermath to depict the food frenzy that followed King Viserys' (Paddy Considine) death as the Targaryen family — or the "greener" half of them, at least — finally made their move for control of the Iron Throne. This episode gave us a curious interpretation of a king's last dying words, several layers of political machinations and plotting, and what essentially amounts to a coup attempt to usurp the throne. If all of that sounds vaguely familiar,...

The White Worm played a big part in House of the Dragon’s ninth episode.
The spymaster has had a subtle but important role in King’s Landing as the Game of Thrones prequel has gone on.
*Warning – Spoilers for House of the Dragon episode nine ahead*
In episode nine, the White Worm conceals Prince Aegon II ahead of his coronation.
In one powerful line, she shocks Otto Hightower with the extent of her connections in the city: “My condolences on the passing of your king.” At the time, no one knew that King Viserys had died, meaning she has spies within the palace itself.
She boldly warns Hightower: “When your plots ripen and you install your grandson on the throne, remember, it was me who put him there. I could have killed him as easily as a wasp on fruit.”
So, who is the princess of thieves who would...

One for sorrow, two for joy.
Three for a girl, four for a boy.
Five for silver, six for gold.
Seven for a story yet to be told.
Or, in the case of this “Magpie,” make that two stories yet to be told.
The latest limited series from PBS’s Masterpiece, “Magpie Murders,” may be derived from the popular children’s nursery rhyme, but the way director Peter Cattaneo unfolds the mystery within a mystery in this whodunnit is anything but child’s play.
The story, based on the 2016 novel by Anthony Hororwitz (the first in The Susan Ryeland series), begins when famed author Alan Conway dies shortly after handing in his new manuscript: “Magpie Murders.” The man’s death is suspicious, and the final chapter of his story is missing, setting up a meta mystery within a mystery that’s as much fun to follow as it is to solve.

House of the Dragon: Larys Strong actor Matthew Needham addresses Varys and Littlefinger comparisons
House of the Dragon star Matthew Needham has addressed fan comparisons between his character and two Game of Thrones villains.
*House of the Dragon spoilers below*
The British actor stars in HBO’s fantasy series as the scheming and ruthless Larys Strong, a lord who killed his own father and brother as a display of loyalty towards Lady Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).
After Needham first appeared in episode six, many viewers quickly compared Larys to Game of Thrones’ Petyr Baelish, also known as Littlefinger, played by Aidan Gillen.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Needham said that he could understand the comparisons to Littlefinger, as well as Conleth Hill’s Lord Varys.
“I do think [the character is] a mixture of Varys and Littlefinger, but I also think they’re three remarkably different people. But they share a sort of murky underworld of the mind,” Needham said.
“I just think they’re three very unique people.

This article contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" episode six.
For all of the politicking, backstabbing, and violence in "House of the Dragon" thus far, there hasn't been a clear villain. The two women at the center of the tale, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), are both presented as complex figures that are neither entirely good or evil. Like its predecessor, "Game of Thrones," the series is interested in moral ambiguity and on the horrible things people will do in order to survive. In episode six, "The Princess and the Queen," the series' most potent, potentially terrifying villain emerges from the shadows. Larys Strong, played to perfection by Matthew Needham, is another of George R. R. Martin's secretive schemers, but he has already shown himself to be far more ruthless than Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) or Varys (Conleth Hill) could ever dream.

We get two whodunits for the price of one in the twisty six-parter Magpie Murders, adapted by Anthony Horowitz from his bestseller. Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) stars as shrewd British book editor Susan Ryeland, who becomes convinced her top author, Alan Conway (Conleth Hill), was killed after he turns in his final mystery minus the last chapter. (Credit: Bernard Walsh/PBS) To solve both murders, she needs those missing pages, and she gets advice from an unlikely source: the detective in Conway’s 1950s-set novel, Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan), whom she talks with in her mind as Pünd’s investigation simultaneously unfolds. “It’s weird, isn’t it?” jokes Manville. That device (unique to the TV series), and the fact that Susan defies the conventions of women her age, appealed to the Oscar nominee. “She’s chosen not to get married, not to have children. She’s...

While filming the Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, co-showrunner Ryan Condal admits he and his colleagues were careful to avoid a déjà vu incident, telling THR at the show’s July 27 L.A. premiere that they maintained “a very heavily policed set — there was lots of Starbucks-hunting going on.”
He was quick to defend the Thrones error, noting moments like that happen often in TV and film but the fact that it was scrutinized in the way that it was underscored the HBO show’s popularity. The scene attracted so much attention it sent off a witch hunt for who was responsible, with many blaming Emilia Clarke due to her proximity to her...

Exclusive: Star Trek Into Darkness, Black Mirror and Belgravia star Alice Eve has joined the cast of Sky’s upcoming comedy-drama series The Lovers.
Eve will join a cast that includes the likes of Roisin Gallagher, Johnny Flynn and Conleth Hill.
The series, first unveiled two weeks ago, follows Janet (Gallagher) as supermarket worker who doesn’t care about anything, including her life, and Seamus (Flynn) a handsome, self-centered, political broadcaster with what looks to be a perfect London life. When they unexpectedly meet, they instantly clash – and yet also find themselves inextricably drawn to each other.
Details of Eve’s role are scarce but Deadline hears she will play Seamus’ high-profile celebrity girlfriend.
Eve recently starred in Epix’s limited series Belgravia, which is from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, and wrapped production on buzzy Amazon drama series The Power.

Together, the Coen Brothers have covered a lot of ground as collaborators and co-directors, from stark neo noir (“Blood Simple”) to bluegrass-tinged whimsy to mid-century Hollywood shenanigans. But an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” could only have happened once the pair put their partnership on hiatus, according to Joel Coen in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Coen’s interest in “Macbeth” was first piqued when his wife, Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand, asked him to consider directing her in the play as Lady Macbeth. He ended up not helming that production at Berkeley Rep, which starred McDormand and “Games of Thrones” alum Conleth Hill in 2016. But the seed had been planted for Coen, who began contemplating the story of a murderous couple in cinematic terms.
That plan became clearer after 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” the last film on which the Coens shared a directing credit.

The arrival of House of the Dragon’s long-awaited debut trailer reveals a version of Westeros in which royal House Targaryen reigns supreme with the strength of swords and the fire of dragons. Yet, while the defining symbol of said supremacy, the Iron Throne, makes an appearance, it looks dramatically different from the one coveted by claimants some 200 years later during the events of Game of Thrones. Interestingly, the throne’s new look actually better reflects creator George R.R. Martin’s more-menacing vision of the challenged chair.
“Dreams didn’t make us kings. Dragons did.”
The Iron-Throne-accompanying trailer line, delivered by Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), reveals a practical level of self-awareness from the dragon-riding warrior royal, who is the younger brother of ruler King Viserys I (Paddy Considine). While one might offer a snide addendum that incest also played a factor, with Daemon being married to his brother’s daughter,...

Exclusive: On Friday, the New York Film Festival opens with the world premiere of The Tragedy of Macbeth, the Shakespearean thriller adapted and directed by Joel Coen, and starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, alongside an accomplished cast. Coen, Washington and McDormand have 10 Oscars among them, and the film from Apple and A24 lands smack in the middle of another awards season and I expect it to quickly establish itself in the race. Sticking with the chilling dialogue from Shakespeare, the film about a man who with his loyal wife plots the murder of the popular Scottish king for his crown takes on a style all his own. Coen’s Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are older than in most productions, and Coen’s decision to shoot in black and white creates shadows and textures that ratchet up the elements of the supernatural and horror. Right down to a haunting portrayal...
