Anyone who saw this winter's wonderful animated adventure "Frozen" probably thought that the story, about a pair of princess sisters, one of whom has locked her kingdom in a frosty perpetual winter, was ripe for a Disney theme park attraction. The movie already felt so classic that a ride, potentially in the "dark ride" mold of things like Peter Pan's Flight or Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, seemed like a foregone conclusion. And you know what? It kind of is.
Disney historian Jim Hill, while appearing on the Disney Dish Podcast with Touring Plans founder Len Testa, described what the Mouse House has planned for "Frozen," at least when it comes to its theme park presence. Apparently the first place the movie, which just beat out "Monsters University's" $268 million gross by a few million, is first headed to the Norway pavilion at Florida's Epcot.

You may recall that when we reviewed The Croods in our podcast, we were somewhat lukewarm about it. Looking back, it seems that was largely a result of the hope and expectations it managed to bring in the first 30 minutes, that never seemed to completely come together.
Strictly as a family effort though, this one has a lot going for it, including massive appeal to the actual target audience.
The hit film about a family of cavemen, which rather awesomely gives over the reigns of bravery to daughter Eep (Emma Stone), has as its best feature a complexity that rewards repeated viewings. Anything but a simple, wild romp with bizarre creatures, dangers, and the requisite amount of slapstick, The Croods is a layered conversation about growing up, parenthood, and family in general that is easily superimposed over any family… ever.

Mark your calendars, The Croods Blu-Ray is set to hit on October 1st, and if you thought there wouldn’t be snazzy marketing promos, you thought wrong. How about a nice plush with your film?
Somewhat less than we were hoping for back when we did our podcast review, The Croods is nevertheless a solid bit of family fare that has a lot going for it from the kid perspective.
It doesn’t look overloaded with bonuses, but at least it has a lot more kid-friendly ideas at work than most of the recent animated films.
Take a look at what’s coming your way, and don’t forget the date.

There has been a ton of speculation about Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird's sci-fi collaboration "Tomorrowland" (named after a Disney theme world), formerly titled "1952." Plot comparisons to Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters" had fans extremely excited, and then a fascinating article from entertainment journalist and Disney expert Jim Hill popped up that took the mysterious project in a slightly different direction.
Hill claimed the film, inspired by a box of Disney World memorabilia circa 1952, would be based on an unproduced television series that the U.S. government approached Walt with. The show would reveal to American audiences that those alien buggers they had been hearing about all over the news were real. A scoop on website HitFix, however, suggests yet another possibility — one that could be even stranger than the "UFOs are real" plotline. A leaked synopsis being used by a Hollywood agency to cast the 2014 film reads as follows:

There's a huge, potentially franchise-starting movie that's been brewing just underneath the surface of mainstream movie coverage. It's a film from the good folks at Disney called "Tomorrowland," directed by "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" director Brad Bird and starring George Clooney. Up until this point, the movie has remained incredibly mysterious. Now, HitFix claims to have obtained an official synopsis -- and it sounds nuts. Some (brief) background: In 2011, "Prometheus" screenwriter Damon Lindelof and Entertainment Weekly reporter Jeff Jensen dreamed up a project for Disney. It was supposedly based on a mysterious box that was found in the Walt Disney Archives, originally designated for the part of the company that would later become Imagineering (which designs and produces all the rides, shows, and restaurants for Disney). The box was labeled "That Darn Cat" (after the 1965 flick), but that label fell off, revealing another title underneath that read, simply: "1952." That would...

I recently linked to a Movies.com article about the upcoming Brad Bird Disney project Tomorrowland, in which Erik Davis discusses the speculation -- which originated with Disney historian Jim Hill -- that Tomorrowland might be about Disney’s work with the Air Force in the 1950s to make a TV show about UFOs. I thought that was all very interesting, but mostly it just alerted me to the fact that Brad Bird has another movie coming up, and I’ll watch that no matter what it’s about. But I am not an ordinary movie geek, apparently. Cuz this Drew McWeeny piece at HitFix left me a bit mystified. From Exclusive: The secret of Brad Bird's 'Tomorrowland' is not what you think: I remember when I broke the first information anywhere about "Cloverfield," before anyone was even aware there was a project called "Cloverfield." ... It looks like Damon Lindelof was telling the truth when he wrote on Twitter that his new movie wasn't about aliens. Despite many lengthy conspiracy theories to the contrary, a new report from HitFix has revealed that the plot for "Tomorrowland," Lindelof's upcoming collaboration with director Brad Bird and star George Clooney, is much more complicated than mere UFOs.
According to Drew McWeeny, who got his hands on a casting breakdown, the plot for "Tomorrowland" is as follows:
"A teenage girl, a genius middle-aged man (who was kicked out of Tomorrowland) and a pre-pubescent girl robot attempt to get to and unravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth."
That's a big change from what many had expected, especially after Disney expert Jim Hill, who also blogs for The Huffington Post, speculated that the top secret plot of "Tomorrowland" could have something...

Before Thursday's memorial service at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre for Dr. Jerry Buss, Mandalay Entertainment CEO Peter Guber said the Lakers owner would be remembered as “an iconic owner and a good person.” In a nutshell, that was repeated by the dozen speakers on the program. The memorial was emceed by Kcbs-tv sportscaster Jim Hill, who addressed the crowd of roughly 2,500 just after 3 p.m. Vips, almost all wearing black, were in the lower seats; the back of the theater saw more fans, with a few in purple and gold Lakers jackets. As the story goes, the United States government approached Walt Disney in the mid-1950s and asked him for help producing a television program that would explain to the population that UFOs were real. This project, this moment in time, and this unidentified flying secret might be the basis for Brad Bird‘s mysterious Tomorrowland movie. For years, Jim Hill has been a peerless source about news and insider information when it comes to The Mouse House, and now the writer has laid out a ton of signs that all point to a military initiative called Project Blue Book and the government’s reliance on Disney to share the story as the springboard for the plot. Of course, he also has exactly the same amount of proof that conspiracy theorists always have, but his expertise in all things Disney is unquestionable. It’s about as good (and thorough) a guess as we’re likely to see until...

I’m slowly becoming obsessed with the secretive plot machinations of Disney and Brad Bird’s upcoming Tomorrowland. First the name was changed from 1952, then that photograph of the box containing all sorts of goodies was released, and now rumors abound concerning the contents of the box and what it all means! And the question I keep asking myself is: why do I care?
I care because it’s the most clever marketing ploy I’ve seen in a long time, and I give respect to that. So here’s the latest rumor, a hypothesis based on the exhaustive analysis of the box by Walt Disney Archives director Betsy Cline and then interpreted by Disney historian Jim Hill (you will note that this is all in the Disney family, right?). Ok, here we go.

It doesn't surprise me that Jim Hill is the one who connected some pretty obvious dots on "Tomorrowland," the mysterious new Brad Bird film that was formerly known by its working title, "1952." After all, if there's anyone out there who has written more about the business of Walt Disney over the years, I'm unaware of them. Hill's been doing this for years, and he knows more about the parks and the studio and their history than almost anyone. He has a deep abiding love of Disney's work, but he's also more than willing to be critical of the way the...

Brad Bird's Tomorrowland is the big new mystery on the block in Hollywood. Originally titled 1952, the project is a collaboration between the Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol director and Damon Lindelof, but all details about the plot have been kept under wraps. The history that has been going around is that Lindelof went into Disney one day and was given a banker's box with the label "1952" on it. After looking through the box he was suddenly inspired. But what is the story that he was inspired to come up with? Walt Disney historian Jim Hill says that he has a theory and posted it on his official website. And it all begins with this photograph that Bird posted on his Twitter feed a couple weeks back: After Bird released that shot, the official Disney fan club, D23, analyzed the box and its contents and came up with a detailed...

Few films have been as intensely speculated upon (and heavily guarded) as Disney's forthcoming "Tomorrowland." Originally announced in June 2011, the film, based on an idea by "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof and Entertainment Weekly writer Jeff Jensen, picked up steam last year when it secured "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" director Brad Bird (who would heavily re-write the script with Lindelof) and, for the lead role, some dude named George Clooney. Still, no one knows what it's about, and for a long time it carried an even-more-cryptic working title of "1952." Well, Disney historian Jim Hill thinks that he cracked the case wide open. Read on, but beware – potentially huge spoilers lurk below, that is, if they turn out to be true. It should first be stated that Hill's hypothesis is based on a number of things – firstly, the photo that Brad Bird posted to Twitter (see above), showing the box (marked...

Damon Lindelof might be the most famous graduate from the J.J. Abrams School of Secrecy, and it looks like the master of marketing has taught his protege well. Lindelof is teaming with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird for a new Disney science fiction movie formerly called 1952 and now titled Tomorrowland, but the cryptic campaign has only given enough info for fanboy speculation so far. Earlier this week, D23 took a more detailed look at what was in the mystery box labled "1952," and now it seems that Disney expert Jim Hill (via AICN) may have just put the puzzle pieces together. More below! Stay with us here, because Hill's theory makes a couple of huge leaps and bounds to get to his point. Based on a ton of information, including the fact that there was a blue book found in the "1952" box, Hill believes the Tomorrowland movie has something...

In 2008, Phineas and Ferb debuted on Disney Channel. The series was a surprise for Disney appealing not only to children and families but also to older viewers in high school and college.

In December 2010, Walt Disney Pictures released a sequel to their 28-year-old Tron entitled Tron: Legacy. The film starred Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, reprising their roles as Kevin Flynn and Alan Bradley/Tron, respectively, and featured Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett and Michael Sheen. Although it made $400 million worldwide, the film didn't quite get the game-changing reaction Disney wanted. Undeterred, Disney started work on an animated series, Tron: Uprising, featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Lance Henrikson, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry, Reginald VelJohnson, and Boxleitner. However, a sequel to Tron: Legacy has been quietly in the works for some time now, and the screenwriters of Legacy (now showrunners of Once Upon a Time), Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, have spoken about a third Tron film.
Though they are not writing the film due to their obligations to Once Upon a Time, Kitsis and Horowitz will...

One of the juiciest rumors currently making the rounds is that Disney is thinking of turning Tomorrowland in their theme parks into the Stark Expo. If you seen Iron Man 2, you'll remember that the Stark Expo is a kind of Disneyland environment based on the latest technological innovations and that's what Tomorrowland strives for at Disney's parks. Add that to the fact that Disney now owns Marvel and it sounds like a match made in Heaven. The latest update is that this rumor does have some basis in fact but there are some major logistical hurdles, namely a lack of time. The ideal time to launch a Marvel themed section of the Disney theme parks would be next summer with The Avengers and that doesn't seem possible. After the jump, read more about that and another new ride where fans can battle their favorite villains. Starting with the last bit first,...

I love listening to movie podcasts - including the Hollywood Saloon, Midnight Movie Cowboys, Nowhere in Mulberry, United States of Geekdom and the Magical Definition Podcast. All of the above (with the exception of the Magical Definition Podcast) are about film fans discussing what is going on in Hollywood and reviewing the latest movies. I fully support each and every one of them. The Magical Definition Podcast is a little different. While the hosts, Nathan M. Rose and Jim Hill, do talk largely about the films of Disney, they focus on the Company as a whole (theme parks, television, cruise lines, etc.). When I read about the Stark Expo project rumor, I knew exactly who to ask and so I sent off an email to the Magical Definition Podcast asking if this was real. Nathan picked my email to discuss on air and here is what Jim had to say...

[1] Back in 2005, when it seemed like Disney and Pixar would be dissolving their partnership, Disney set up a studio called Circle 7 to take advantage of the fact that it still held the right to make sequels of Pixar's film under a previous agreement. The studio was shut down in 2006, once Disney agreed to acquire Pixar, but not before Circle 7 employees had already begun work on sequels like Monsters, Inc. 2 and Toy Story 3. Circle 7's plans for those films were scrapped completely; the Toy Story 3 that came out last year and the Monsters, Inc. 2 that's due out next year bear no resemblance to Circle 7's earlier ideas. Yesterday, however, two of the screenwriters behind Circle 7's Monsters, Inc. 2: Lost in Scaradise -- Bob Hilgenberg and Rob Muir, or Bob & Rob, as they call themselves -- offered an intriguing glimpse at the never-produced film when they posted some of the artwork for their unproduced script.

Out Pixar producer Darla K. Anderson produced Toy Story 3, the winner of this year’s Oscar for Best Animated Feature, as well as A Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc. and Cars. With her movies grossing more than two billion dollars worldwide, she is one of the most successful women in the industry. She counts hands-on mentoring from Steve Jobs and John Lasseter early in her career as part of that success.
A Pixar public relations representative says that Anderson has always been out at work. Recently, she joined some other Pixar employees for an It Gets Better video.
"Pixar is made up of just a crazy combination of people," says Anderson in the video. "Most of those unique individuals weren’t the most popular in high school and junior high. Thank goodness, we hung around, and found each other, and created this familial tribe of people." She adds, "I...

Both of those things can happen to you between now and September 25, as Fatone is serving as the host of "The Price is Right — Live" at Bally's in Las Vegas. With the biggest, greatest, most over the top action film of all time coming out on 19th August in the form of The Expendables (our review here), HeyUGuys is bringing you the ultimate run down of the kill count that these historic action actors have each tallied up.
From throat rips to decapitations, martial art assassins to robotic killers and Yippee Ki-Yay’s to Asta La Vista’s, they have dealt death in every way possible with every weapon imaginable.
Each death reaches the same conclusion but each actor carries it off in their own unique style, often adding a personal touch. Be it an Arnie verbal send off like “Stick Around” after being stuck with a huge knife against a post or adding some humour by playing games with the baddies like John McClane in Die Hard ” Now I have a machine gun, Ho Ho Ho”. A memorable death...

John Lasseter, chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, has been confirmed as the co-director on Cars 2, the next sequel for the seemingly infallible studio.
I say seemingly because despite Toy Story 3’s critical and financial success marking the eleventh straight number one opening for Pixar, there have been rumblings about the problematic sequel to 2006’s cars-can-talk cartoon, Cars.
Disney insider blog Blue Sky reported in February that Lasseter was spending his days in Emeryville helping test drive the story for Cars 2 with first time director Brad Lewis.
Jim Hill confirms this, adding Lasseter will now be officially credited as the co-director when the movie hits theaters in June 2011. There were rumors that this was being pushed back to December 2011, but Disney quickly corrected what may have been a miscommunication.
Pixar has a history of turning a disastrous situation into a fan favorite though.

There's been some grumbling from fans and critics that Pixar's upcoming slate is heavy on the sequels, and light on original material. So any rumor of story trouble might be a "told you so" moment, as trying to tack on an unwarranted sequel might be more work than it's worth. And trouble there seems to be. Multiple sources are confirming today that John Lasseter has become the official co-director on Cars 2, indicating there's story trouble he's having to iron out.
As the rumor mill turns, Cars 2 has no set release date, and has bounced around from 2012 to a date of June 24 2011 (which puts it up against The Green Lantern) to a date of December 2011. Disney has denied that their plans for Cars 2 have changed, and that the film will come out in Summer 2011. Then it was rumored by Blue Sky that Lasseter was spending more time at Pixar than his Disney offices,...

Last night Disney-centric blogger Jim Hill was invited by the studio to take a look at all the products they have coming for the rest of the year, which ranged from the mundane-- clothing and toys-- to some truly big news. Hill apparently learned that John Lasseter, the Pixar founder and Cars director, has stepped in as co-director of Cars 2 alongside Brad Lewis, who was making his directorial debut on the film after producing Ratatouille for the company. This fits right in with a rumor we reported in February, claiming that Cars 2 was in trouble and Lasseter had stepped in to rescue the production. It's not time to jump to doom and gloom conclusions though; Pixar movies often go through laborious development processes, and even Ratatouille-- a perfect film in my opinion-- switched to Brad Bird as a director after years of development. Pixar has always acknowledged...

L.A.-based duopoly Kcbs-tv and Kcal-tv have shuffled the news anchors for their weeknight newscasts.
Pat Harvey, a 20-year Kcal veteran who was one of the original anchors of the station's primetime news, is switching to Kcbs to co-anchor the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Paul Magers, who has held that role since 2004 with Laura Diaz.
Diaz, meanwhile, is getting bumped to Kcbs' 6 p.m. newscast as that program's sole anchor. Diaz will also take on the extra responsibility of hosting and playing a role in the creation of a series of local news and public affairs specials.
Kcal weathercaster Jackie Johnson will succeed Johnny Mountain as Kcbs weeknight weathercaster. Mountain, a five-year Kcbs veteran whose career spans 32 years on Los Angeles television, announced his retirement last month. Josh Rubenstein, the weekday meteorologist for Kcbs and Kcal, will provide Kcal's weeknight weather reports until a successor for Johnson is named.

The slow roll-out of new characters from Toy Story 3 continues with Sparks, a toy robot who was revealed on the same day that reactions began to emerge from the ShoWest screening of the almost finished film.Sparks is described as follows: "Sparks will fly – literally – during electrifying playtimes with your new robot friend Sparks! This retro-inspired toy has flashing red Led eyes and a blaster cavity that actually spits out real sparks when he’s rolled along on his sturdy rubber wheels. Sparks also sports telescoping arms with working pincers, and an elevator action that raises his entire body to new heights. Sparking action completely child-safe. Requires two AA batteries (not included)."And here's a typical take on the finished film from animation guru Jim Hill, which is spoiler-free but does reveal that you might want to bring a box of two of Kleenex for weepie moments. And if...

In the past couple days some news reports have surfaced that would make it seem as if Robert Zemeckis has begun the casting process for his Yellow Submarine remake, which is apparently going under the name of The Fab Four Project or The Untitled Fab Four Project for reasons we do not know (perhaps to either mask the real production or perhaps they've decided to go in a different direction and are between titles). Jim Hill noted that they're holding open auditions at a Beatles convention in Stamford, Connecticut this weekend, and The Sun already claims actor Stephen Graham has landed the part of Ringo in the mo-capped feature (though I'd take that piece of news with a huge grain of salt).
It also looks like Zemeckis is considering a wide range of folks for the role of John Lennon, including one of our favorite up-and-coming actors, Gabe Sunday. I...

This weekend, the 28th and 29th of November, there's a huge Beatles convention taking place in Stamford, Connecticut. Amongst all of the merchandise sales and other such typical expo shenanigans, there's also set to be an open audition for Beatlemaniacs wanting to try out for casting in what they're calling "The Fab Four." Of course, that the film "will be shot as a motion-capture feature like the current Disney release of A Christmas Carol" tells us everything we need to know - this is Robert Zemeckis' remake of Yellow Submarine. There's already some suspicion, though, that this casting call is nothing more than a publicity stunt. Zemeckis has already talked about the possibility of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr playing themselves in the film, there's been a number of previous auditions, and even stories of name actors being up for the roles, perhaps even cast in them already. Jim Hill...

"Toy Story 3" is still far from its theatrical release date, but details on what adventure Woody, Buzz and their toy gang will be facing this time have slowly but surely being unraveled. Jim Hill of Jim Hill Media has recently brought up the news that an official trailer for the Disney/Pixar's animated film will be providing more hints on the plot.
[Spoiler Alert!] According to Jim, the trailer will present "Woody and the gang at Sunnyside Daycare" where they live among toddlers after accidentally thrown out to the garbage. Snippets in the trailer then show that the toy crew "get absolutely brutalized by these 3-year-olds" and decide they have enough of it.
In their first attempt of escaping the daycare, however, Buzz is severely damaged. The situation forces his toy friend to hit his reset button, which puts Buzz into Spanish-speaking mode and turns him into a hot-blooded, flamenco-dancing romantic...

It's not easy finding truly radical innovation when it comes to the hospitality industry. Hotels and resorts follow a tried-and-true money-making pattern and rarely risk giving guests anything more than the same experience they've already had elsewhere--except in a different place. The Radical Innovation in Hospitality Awards aim to change all that by identifying big new ideas in hospitality, from those currently open and operating to the purely conceptual.
