Exclusive: Indican Pictures has acquired North American rights for Australian filmmaker Alena Lodkina’s fantasy thriller Petrol about the unsettling friendship between a shy film student and an alluring performance artist with a troubled past.
The film originally world premiered at Locarno’s Filmmakers Of The Present competition in 2022, and then enjoyed a buzzy North American premiere at the Lincoln Centre and MoMA’s New Directors/ New Films Festival earlier this year.
Indican Pictures co-founder Randolph Kret negotiated the deal with UK-French film company Alief, with the latter reporting that the distribution company had beaten bids from two other key indie players on both price and its release plans which include a theatrical component.

West Hollywood-based indie distribution outfit Indican Pictures (“Gossamer Folds”) has secured North American rights for Santiago Fillol’s political thriller “Matadero” (“Slaughterhouse”).
The debut fiction feature from the Argentine director saw its world premiere in competition at Locarno in 2022, with further festival bows at Mar Del Plata and Seville before December theatrical runs in Argentina and Spain via Cinetren and Begin Again Films, respectively.
Negotiations were handled by Randolph Kret of Indican Pictures alongside Brett Walker and partner Miguel Angel Govea at Alief (“Driving Mum”), who handle world sales on behalf of the filmmakers outside of Argentina, France, Spain and Switzerland.

Spiral Farm, the coming-of-age drama from writer-director Alec Tibaldi and starring Piper De Palma in her feature film debut, has been acquired by Indican Pictures. Exclusive: Indican Pictures has picked up Poor Boy out of the Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Michael Shannon, Justin Chatwin (Shameless), Amanda Crew (Silicon Valley), Dale Dickey (Claws), Pat Healy (Hap and Leonard) and Lou Taylor Pucci (Thumbsucker). Indican will open in a short-city run theatrically in July. The film was completed about a year and a half ago and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016. After that, it went back into the edit room and then went back out to Cannes.
The film, which will be in about 10 to 15 cities, is about two brothers who are basically hustlers. However, when a women tries to repossess their beloved houseboat, the brothers devise an elaborate con so they can leave their desert town and live their dream of living in California.

Jonathan Levine, whose credits include the upcoming Snatched starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn, will direct the Point Grey Pictures, Denver And Delilah Films and Good Universe comedy from a screenplay by Dan Sterling.

Toronto-based distributor 108 Media has acquired 44 library titles from California-based independent film outfit Indican Pictures.
The deal, which was brokered by 108’s head of acquisitions Nancy Silverstone and Indican’s founder Shaun Hill, sees the company take worldwide distribution rights to all of the films (excluding North America).
The titles include: Omar Ashmawey’s Boiling Pot; Ryan Schmitz’s Downshift; Kamikaze by Marcus Shakesheff; Love Me True by Kirby Voss; Red Herring by Ousa Khun; and Starcrossed by Chase Mohseni.
