Almost two years have gone by since A24 announced that production was underway on the psychological horror film The Front Room, with Brandy Norwood taking on the lead role and Max and Sam Eggers – the younger brothers of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman director Robert Eggers – at the helm. Now the film finally has a release date. Deadline reports that A24 will be sending The Front Room out to theatres on September 6th, putting it in direct competition with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Based on a short story by Susan Hill, The Front Room centers on a young, newly pregnant couple forced to take in an ailing stepmother who has long been estranged from the family. According to Deadline, a woman’s mother-in-law moves in and proves to be the house guest from hell. If you would like to read the short story source material, it can be found in...

The PG-13 rating, at least for horror, often induces derision or skepticism, like an instant shackle on the horror. A PG-13 rating broadcasts straightaway not to expect any excessive gore, violence, or any of the explicit fun stuff that tends to be horror’s bread and butter. But those things aren’t synonymous with horror’s true aim, which is to scare you silly.
Luckily, PG-13 horror has proven time and time again throughout the decades that it’s more than capable of inducing chills. Especially when it comes to the supernatural.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to PG-13 horror movies that bring the terror through ghostly jump scares, ominous atmosphere, and more. That the PG-13 rating means they also double as potential gateway horror for the budding monster kid is a bonus.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The novel The Woman in Black recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Released in Fall of 1983, The Woman in Black has become a much loved and much reimagined story. During its history it has been adapted into a TV movie, Hollywood film – with sequel, radio play and theatre production – which was the 2nd longest run of any play in London’s history. The apparition of The Woman in Black has taken many impressive shapes. What’s more impressive is that: the author, Susan Hill had never had a ghost story published prior to this one; the theatre adaptation was penned by a soap opera writer; and the first performance took place in a canteen - possibly a pub - in the northern coastal town of Scarborough (which is some 20 miles away from Dracula’s Whitby).

It’s been another blockbuster year for horror, but then again it always feels like that. Superhero fatigue has set in and major franchise pictures haven’t returned as expected, but horror, as ever, always seems to reach new heights. The news in 2023 may have been a load of gout, but the horror has been pure gold.
So, without further ado, here is a list of my top 10 of 2023.

Arrow Films, Vinegar Syndrome and others who have perfected the art of producing feature-length behind the scenes documentaries really have their work cut out for them thanks to RoboDoc. RoboDoc has broken the mould by creating an in-depth documentary that takes you through the entire film scene-by-scene. Ghost stories have been around forever, and will haunt us long after we are ghosts. Before film, most apparitional tales came from novels or short stories. Yes, there were oral traditions of the spooky place down the block or the hitchhiker on a lost highway, but usually someone put it down in a book. Some of the greatest films about hauntings originate as full cinema creations, with a director’s dark vision on the screen, others come from true cases or urban legends. These ghost stories are novel ideas.
This is by no means a complete list. Almost every Edgar Allan Poe film adaptation has a spectral presence; Charles Dickens’ nighttime visitors in A Christmas Carol are only ghosts of presents we wrap for seasonal coverage; director Lew Allen’s 1944 horror feature The Uninvited isn’t here because I haven’t read Dorothy Macardle’s Uneasy Freehold (1941), which it was...

Did you know "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" director Robert Eggers has not just one but two brothers? And they're both in the business of making films themselves? Well, if you didn't before, you do know. Max and Sam Eggers are joining forces as "The Egger Brothers" to make their directorial debut on "The Front Room," a thriller that pairs them with their sibling Robert's frequent studio A24.
Far from a stranger to their sibling's output, Max and Sam Eggers previously served as, respectively, a co-writer on "The Lighthouse" and a production assistant on "The Witch." The pair were also production assistants on Robert Eggers' short film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and got a "special thanks" in the credits for their brother's Viking thriller "The Northman." As such, it will be all the more interesting to see how The Eggers Brothers set themselves apart from Robert Eggers,...

“It’s a classic ghost story with one of the best filmed jumps ever,” sums up Andy Nyman of Herbert Wise’s 1989 TV movie of The Woman in Black, “It properly delivers, and it properly delivers in a fantastically old fashioned way. Two Rivers Media, the UK production outfit founded by former Stv Productions chief Alan Clements, has broken away from Kew Media just a year after taking investment from the beleaguered Canadian company.
Two Rivers’ other backers, Channel 4 and Scottish media bank Noble Grossart, funded the buyout of Kew’s stake, meaning they have increased their own shares in Clements’ company.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, while Two Rivers declined to comment on the size of Kew’s shareholding after it invested in the indie almost a year ago to the day.
Kew suspended trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange last week amid a turbulent period for the company. It follows Kew defaulting on its credit facility after former CFO Geoff Webb filed “inaccurate information regarding working capital” in financial reports.
The company is undergoing a strategic review, which is likely to result in it being split up or sold.

Two Rivers Media has bought out parent group Kew Media Group’s minority stake in the business.
Formed by former Stv Productions head Alan Clements in January 2019, the production outfit behind Channel 5’s recent “Susan Hill’s Ghost Story” launched with the backing of Kew, Noble Grossart Investments and Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund.
Noble Grossart Investments and Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund are increasing their interests to facilitate the buy-out.
The buy-out comes a month after Kew Media Group triggered a strategic review of its business, revealing that the company could be broken up or sold completely following a financially turbulent period for Kew.
Kew was launched by Steven Silver and Peter Sussman in 2017, and owns a roster of Canadian production companies such as Bristow Global Media, Frantic Films and Our House Media, as well as distribution outfits Content Media, which became Kew Media Distribution, and Tcb Media Rights.

Exclusive: The Woman in Black, a West End theater staple for 30 years, will make its long-in-coming New York return in January at The McKittrick Hotel, home of the popular, similarly immersive Sleep No More production.
An eight-week run of London’s endurable ghost play will begin previews January 8, with an official opening on January 23.
The two-actor mystery made its debut in at a small “theatre bar” in Scarborough, UK in 1987 before moving to London’s West End two years later, where it has been playing ever since. Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from Susan Hill’s 1983 novel, The Woman in Black is the West End’s second longest-running play after The Mousetrap, which ran from 1952 to 2012.
The play was staged Off Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre for two months in 2001. (A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the upcoming production would be New York’s first.)

Jokers, circus masters and demonic dolls. Which TV characters terrify you? Den Of Geek asked its writers that very question…
The subconscious is a terrible place; dark, mysterious and peopled by spectres from the past. As a bit of a laugh then, we sent our writers journeying into theirs and asked them to drag out any TV terrors they found lurking in the shadows.
Some television fears had been ensconced there since childhood, others were more recent tenants. Some were morally terrifying; human beings with icy hearts capable of atrocities, others were simply… atrocities.
Join us as we count down in order of terror from the sort-of-creepy to the downright terrifying, the 50 TV characters that, for whatever reason, give our writers chills. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to fill in gaps by adding your own peculiar television nightmares below…

World War Z – Max Brooks
Easily one of the best zombie apocalypse tales out there mostly because of the presentation by Author Max Brooks. The novel is laid out as if it is an actual collection of interviews, journalistic reports, and historical notes. We see how people all over the globe both discovered the apocalypse in their region and then survived it. From a young Japanese teenager so detached from reality thanks to the internet that he only realizes something is wrong when his friends and family begin disappearing from the web to the military who were so technologically connected to the war against the threat that it actually brought their morale down.
Brooks brings all the interviews and news clippings together to create an incredibly believable look at how a virus threat would spread across the globe, how it would affect everyone and every region differently, and how humanity...

Conflict drives drama. What people want and how they set out to get it makes for the best entertainment: Chief Brody wants to make Amity Island a safe place for his kids; Indiana Jones wants to find the Ark of the Covenant; Mark Watney wants to survive on Mars, A giant shark, a bunch of Nazis, and a planet without an atmosphere respectively stand in their way.
But conflict isn't only a device from which to hang big action sequences. The tension between ideas can make for brilliant drama - the kind of film and television that you think about for years afterwards - and one of the best screenwriters for this conflict of ideas was Nigel Kneale.

Nominations came in for personal favourites in fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and graphic novels, so we’ve divided them up into a series of features, the first of which is below, on great unsung sci-fi, fantasy, horror and thriller adult fiction.

It's been a good 18 months since we last heard any news about the film adaptation of DC/Vertigo Comics' Fables. At that point Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) had just come aboard as director, with Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect and the new Fantastic Four) writing the script. Since then it's been eerily quiet, but producer David Heyman has just revealed that development is ongoing, and that Jane Goldman is now taking a crack at the screenplay.Goldman is, of course, no stranger to putting comics on the screen, having previously written Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and the incoming Kingsman: The Secret Service. She also penned the adaptations of Neil Gaiman's Stardust and Susan Hill's The Woman In Black, with more than a modicum of success."Jane is working on a draft of Fables as we speak," says Heyman. "Nik Arcel [who's still attached to direct] did a draft, and now he’s supervising Jane,...

Flawed but genuinely creepy ghost story The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death is disappointing, but only because it comes close to greatness. Director Tom Harper and screenwriters Jon Croker and Susan Hill take great pains to get inside the heads of their traumatized protagonists: British civilians who, during WWII, struggle to keep calm and cope privately. But while Harper does often earn visceral scares from creaking floorboards and ink-black shadows, the potent, quiet spell is also periodically broken by gratuitous jump scares.
The sudden (but frequent!) appearance of chalk-white ghosts only distracts from the film's compelling focus on haunted survivors like Eve (Phoebe Fox), a sensitive young nurse, and Edward (Oaklee Pendergast), one of a dozen orphans Eve and her dis...

It’s now the second world war, and what better place to shelter a troop of evacuee children than an abandoned, cobweb-decked mansion stocked to the rafters with mouldering, macabre Victorian dolls? The sequel to the 2012 adaptation of Susan Hill’s old-school chiller essentially works the same scares again, mechanically and noisily. But in some ways this is a more elegant film than the first, with cinematographer George Steel lashing on the stygian shadows, and the 40s background played very effectively. Helen McCrory contributes a classy touch of blitz-era brittleness, Phoebe Fox holds the centre firmly as the plucky heroine, and Jeremy Irvine is a dashing pilot with… issues,...

Director: Tom Harper; Screenwriters: Jon Croker; Starring: Phoebe Fox, Helen McCrory, Jeremy Irvine; Running time: 98 mins; Certificate: 15
Almost three years after The Woman In Black successfully translated Susan Hill's haunting novel to the big screen, a sequel has emerged that's scary in the sense that it makes you fear for the sanity of those who green-lit this film on such a threadbare script bereft of ideas and invention.
Set in World War II during the Blitz, 40 years after the previous tale, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death successfully conjures up an earthy yet ethereal atmosphere that instantly evokes its predecessor. There's something beautifully creepy about the English countryside at night, which director Tom Harper conveys well.
Yet there's little to arouse our interest beyond an aesthetic level. The story revolves around young schoolteacher Eve (Phoebe Fox) looking after a group of evacuated children in that familiar haunted...

“The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death” just joined the hall of movie sequels that aren’t nearly as good as the original.
The follow-up to the 2012 horror starring Daniel Radcliffe (“Harry Potter”) has received mostly rotten reviews, only able to rack up a 26 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a feeble welcome compared to the 66 percent “fresh” rating that greeted the first installment.

The Woman in Black: Angel of Death
Written by Jon Croker
Directed by Tom Harper
UK, 2015
After 2012’s The Woman in Black became the highest grossing British horror film in 20 years, some sort of sequel or spin-off capitalising on that success seemed inevitable, even if the ending of director James Watkins and writer Jane Goldman’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s source novel didn’t exactly allow much leeway for star Daniel Radcliffe’s return. The solution for sequel Angel of Death: move the action forward a couple of decades from the Edwardian Era to 1941, thereby negating the need to retain any of the original players.
As German bombings terrorise London during the Blitz of World War II, a young schoolteacher, Eve (Phoebe Fox), and a headmistress (Helen McCrory, recognisable to younger viewers as Narcissa Malfoy in Radcliffe’s Harry Potter series) evacuate a group of children to the...

2012’s The Woman in Black was arguably the best of the modern Hammer lineup, a film which drew from both a classically-styled novella (from author Susan Hill), as well as classical filmmaking to craft an eerie, if cozy, affair. As an unequivocal success, The Woman in Black of course spawned a sequel, one that retains…
