Coming from the writer of recent slow-burn horror The Wind, the slightly oddly-titled Lovely, Dark and Deep, tells the story of a park ranger looking for answers from a childhood tragedy while she walks alone through the wilderness.
I guess it should be no surprise that this movie could also be called a slow burner but don’t go thinking that this means the first half or more of the film is boring or that nothing of note happens. Because Lovely, Dark and Deep grabs its viewers right from the start. But, there’s no doubt that the pace picks up towards the climax of the film and the movie leans more into horror the longer it goes on.

Back when we heard that Georgina Campbell was starring in the psychological horror film Lovely, Dark, and Deep, she was best known for winning a BAFTA TV leading actress award for her role in the 2014 TV movie Murdered by My Boyfriend. Since then, we’ve seen her name around here quite a lot, due to her roles in films like All My Friends Hate Me, Barbarian, Bird Box: Barcelona, T.I.M., and the upcoming The Watchers, Cold Storage, and Psycho Killer. As for Lovely, Dark, and Deep, it’s set to receive a VOD release on February 22nd, and we have the trailer embedded below.
This project marks the feature directorial debut of Teresa Sutherland, who previously wrote Emma Tammi’s horror western The Wind and was a staff writer on the Netflix / Mike Flanagan series Midnight Mass. The story of this “cosmic thriller” sees Campbell taking on the role of Lennon,...

"A beguiling cosmic nightmare." XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror psychological thriller called Lovely, Dark, and Deep, which marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Teresa Sutherland. The film originally premiered at Canada's Fantasia Film Festival and Toronto After Dark Film Festival, and also at the MOTELx Lisbon Horror Film Festival last year. Lennon, a new back-country ranger, travels alone through the dangerous wilderness, hoping to uncover the origins of a tragedy that has haunted her since she was a child. While adapting to her solitary existence in the wilderness, she becomes aware of a lurking, sinister presence. Georgina Campbell stars as Lennon, with a small indie cast including Nick Blood, Wai Ching Ho, Edgar Morais, Ana Sofia Martins, and Soren Hellerup. This looks way, way creepier than you're probably expecting - especially when it gets weirder as this super eerie trailer plays out. // Continue...

The final verse of Robert Frost’s memorable poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” inspires and captures the essence of writer/director Teresa Sutherland’s directorial debut. Lovely, Dark, and Deep applies cosmic horror to a familiar genre setting, the wilderness, to unfurl a twisted, stunningly shot psychological mood piece. While Frost’s poem was deceptive in its simplicity, Sutherland’s debut only skims the surface of its themes, mining them for a beguiling cosmic nightmare.
After an ominous opener that teases all is not well in these woods, Sutherland’s debut introduces Lennon (Barbarian’s Georgina Campbell), the new park ranger filling a coveted, recently vacated position at an isolated outpost. From the outset, something’s amiss with Lennon. Visions of eerie black deer cross her path, only to dissipate in a blink as Lennon travels to her new position. 13-year-old Mei (Rosalie Chiang) has always been the perfect child. She respects her parents (Sandra Oh’s Ming and Orion Lee’s Jin), helps work the family temple (a tourist destination in Toronto), and makes sure to keep her grades impeccable (while also enjoying a litany of extra-curriculars to pad out that inevitable college résumé). And this is how she wants it. Or, at least, it’s how she’s wanted it. She looks up to her mother and is cognizant of the strain that’s kept her grandmother (Wai Ching Ho) away from them. The last thing she wants is for their relationship to fracture in the same way, but puberty has a tendency of upsetting such ironclad dynamics once hormones and emotions take hold. It’s time Mei put herself first.

Pixar’s winning streak of critical acclaim has continued with the new animated film “Turning Red,” which hits Disney+ on Friday.
Directed by Domee Shi in her feature film debut and written by Shi and Julia Cho (“Halt and Catch Fire”), “Turning Red” follows Meilin “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student, who is horrified to discover that whenever she gets too excited or stressed, she turns into a giant red panda. Mei later learns that her ancestors have a shared history with the species as a family curse, though the curse can be contained by performing a special ritual on one specific night which happens to coincide with a concert by her favorite boy band, 4*Town.
In a rave review for The Washington Post, writer Michael Sullivan wrote, “To paraphrase Sigmund Freud, sometimes a red panda is just a red panda. And sometimes it’s a metaphor for that inner spark of creativity,...

Part of parenthood is the understanding that today’s loving, obedient child can be tomorrow’s willful, snarling teenage beast. And in the same way that Pixar’s “Inside Out” skillfully broke down the swirl of emotions swimming around all of our heads, the studio’s latest, “Turning Red,” uses a big, fluffy wild animal as a way to explore one girl’s passage to womanhood.
For 13-year-old Meimei (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), her entry into adulthood is marked by her occasional transformation into a giant, red panda whenever she gets excited or agitated. Meimei’s no-nonsense mother Ming (Sandra Oh) reveals that this shape-shifting is a family trait that’s been passed down from mother to daughter over the centuries, all the way back to an ancestor who was blessed with this gift because of her close relationship with the red pandas.

IndieWire has learned from sources that Walt Disney Pictures today informed exhibitors that “Turning Red,” their latest animated Pixar release, is moving off its March 11 theatrical release date to play on Disney+ on the same date, with non-premium access free for subscribers. Disney has confirmed the news.
“Disney+ subscribers around the world enthusiastically embraced Pixar’s Academy Award-winning ‘Soul’ and the critically-acclaimed “Luca” when they premiered exclusively on the service and we look forward to bringing them Pixar’s next incredible feature film ‘Turning Red,’” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution. “Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world.”
This comes as the current Omicron surge seems to be cutting into what little box office there is. Smash success...

You've probably heard the report that 78 year old Harrison Ford has suffered a shoulder injury prepping for a scene in the as yet untitled Indiana Jones 5. We've already heard his age mentioned in a joking manner around the web but we're not going to join in the ageism of that. We would just like to point out that if Harrison Ford is going to do this at 79 (his birthday is in a couple of weeks) why can't actresses get action roles at that age? Well, okay, they let Helen Mirren do it a couple of times but we can never have enough actressy action and James Cameron takes decades off between movies.
Herewith a list of women who are similar age to Harrison Ford who we'd love to see in an action flick. Sorry not sorry...
Joanna Cassidy (75) still popping up on TV and always fun to watch.

Peter Shinkoda, who played crime boss Nobu Yoshioka in nine episodes of Marvel’s Netflix superhero series “Daredevil,” revealed during Comic-Con@Home (via The Wrap) that former Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb deliberately cut out stories centered on Asian characters from the series. Loeb allegedly told the “Daredevil” writers room that “nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people” in film and television projects. One storyline that Loeb reportedly cut deepened the relationship between Shinkoda’s Nobu and Wai Ching Ho’s character, Madame Gao.
“Jeph Loeb told the writers room not to write for Nobu and Gao — and this was reiterated many times by many of the writers and showrunners,” Shinkoda said. “[Loeb said], ‘Nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people. There were three previous Marvel movies, a trilogy called ‘Blade’ that was made where Wesley Snipes killed 200 Asians each movie. Nobody gives a shit so don’t write about Nobu and Gao,...

If last year’s massively successful “The Farewell” taught the film industry anything, it’s that American audiences have an appetite for stories that haven’t been seen before. Lulu Wang’s debut feature was a major boon for Asian-American indie film, and Wang’s success an inspiration to all marginalized filmmakers. While it may seem reductive to compare two films directed by Chinese-American women, both films revolve around a Nai Nai, the Mandarin word for “grandma.” Of course, where Wang’s Nai Nai was sweet and naive, the Nai Nai in “Lucky Grandma” is a grizzled, cantankerous chainsmoker — and a total badass.

Director and cinematographer Benjamin Ree injected his deep interest with art theft in his latest feature The Painter and the Thief, which drops in virtual cinemas as well as VOD platforms starting Friday.
The documentary debuted at Sundance earlier this year and went on to win the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Creative Storytelling before being acquired by Neon. In the film, two paintings by Czech artist Barbora Kysilkova are stolen from an Oslo art gallery. The thieves are identified with a quickness but the paintings are nowhere to be found.
Barbora reaches out to one of the thieves (Karl-Bertil Nordland) and she ends up painting a portrait of him. After a series of portraits the two form a bond and become unlikely friends.

Chicago – This striper crime caper is flashy, buffed to a high gloss, and more entertaining and watchable than it has any right to be. But it’s never quite as smart, or layered as it seems to think it is. Constance Wu from “Crazy Rich Asians” stars as the proverbial stripper with a heart of gold, Destiny.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
She’s just doing it to help take care of her grandma but finds that working the poll alone won’t pay the bills. At the New York Club modeled after the manhattan nightspot Scores, queen bee Jennifer Lopez takes her under her wing to show her the moves. This film is a sisterhood tale wrapped up in larceny and dollar bills. Lopez gets a meaty role tailor-made to her like a sequined bodysuit. It starts with Lopez showing Wu how to get into the VIP champagne room and milk the marks for all their worth.
