This article contains spoilers for The Blacklist through season 9.
Two questions that define Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) on The Blacklist are “how far is he willing to go?” and “why does he do what does?” The genius of Red as both sinner and saint creates a character that is certainly akin to a normal human being, though larger-than-life. But that doesn’t mean Red’s endgame is larger-than-life as well. His endgame may be a reward that is utterly and undeniably just normal.
It may be normal, but it will inevitably have a Red spin to it that will surprise and inspire. The metaphysical, the Hobson’s choices, and season nine’s “Avenging Angel” as well as the death of Marvin Gerard demonstrate three themes in The Blacklist that can help fans come to understand Red’s endgame through the endings he gives to others.

This supernatural thriller digs deep into the underbelly of a weird backwoods idyll
Developed from a 2016 short, Matt Glass and Jordan Wayne Long’s post-us Civil War supernatural thriller isn’t just atmospheric and characterful, it’s an often shrewd allegory of the US self-image as the shining “city on a hill”. Thomas Hobson plays James McCune, a black doctor and war veteran nurturing physical and psychological wounds, who is summoned by his Uncle Matthew (Phil Morris) to a post in Norfolk, a walled town sequestered deep in the Ozark forest. When he arrives, he is shocked to encounter a biracial paradise where, as the preachy saloon murals have it, “To each their purpose”. But there are strict rules, imposed by Matthew, about venturing beyond the palisade where horned ghosts are apt to emerge from banks of red fog with a particular hunger for local troublemakers. As another mural counsels,...

Brea Grant, at least for me, first came to prominence after appearing in Heroes, the mid-2000s superhero show that took the world by storm for about a season but never truly recovering post-writers strike. Since then she’s appeared in a number of other genre shows and movies, including The Guild, Game Shop, Worry Dolls and Beyond the Gates. However alongside her acting roles Grant has been slowing progressing as both writer and director; and this year she has not one but two genre films under her belt – writing and starring in Lucky; and writing and directing this hospital-set horror, 12 Hour Shift.
