Dark Sky Films' Laced Coming to VOD + Digital Platform January 12: "Laced is a modern thriller/drama in the vein of Hitchcockian classics like Dial M for Murder and Rear Window. Set in a single location, the piece explores the claustrophobic nature of young love strung with toxicity and lies, and the cyclical nature of violence.
Official Film Synopsis:In a remote cabin on the evening of a record-breaking blizzard, a young woman plots to poison her abusive husband in order to end their toxic relationship once and for all. When the poison fails to kill him, she not only has to quickly concoct a backup plan, but also contend with her husband’s increasing suspicion that his intensifying illness isn’t wholly accidental. And with the unexpected arrival of her brother, her carefully crafted scheme threatens to spiral ever further out of control. Now trapped together as the snow piles up,...

Screenwriter Robin Swicord hasn’t seen “Practical Magic” in the 25 years since it was released. For her, it’s hard to remember much about the film outside of “trying to figure the movie out and do my best to write something that would get made and be worth it,” she told TheWrap in an exclusive interview. Swicord is Hollywood’s go-to screenwriter when the town needs a book adaptation. Her writing has defined a generation from her 1994 adaptation of “Little Women” to working with perceived unadaptable material like 2005’s “Memoirs of a Geisha.”
“Practical Magic” is a bittersweet topic for Swicord, though, due to changes with the script that would eventually be credited to her, as well as Akiva Goldsman and Adam Brooks. Creative clashes with director Griffin Dunne compelled Swicord to “write that one off,” she said. A surprising admission given the film’s beloved status by many, especially when fall rolls around.

Get on the phone with Ron Bernstein and he’ll happily share his views on who’s up and down at the studios — and inevitably, he’ll talk about his latest deals. On a recent call, he hyped the Redstone family power saga by James Stewart and Rachel Abrams, “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Hollywood Media Empire”; sure enough, within weeks it sold to producer Steven Paul, who’s developing the juicy Shakespearean drama for television.
Bernstein is Hollywood’s most respected media rights agent. He’s repped the source material for the Coen brothers’ Best Picture winner “No Country for Old Men” (Cormac McCarthy), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (Doris Kearns Goodwin), Danny Boyle’s “Jobs” (Walter Isaacson), and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” (Marie Brenner).
Now, he has a new job. After a 23-year run at ICM, which CAA bought in 2022, Bernstein recently joined the Agency for the...

Ron Bernstein, a veteran rights agent who has brokered adaptive deals for modern classics like “No Country for Old Men” and “Blackhawk Down,” has joined the Agency for the Performing Arts.
He will serve as senior vice president of media rights, a mantle he will take up after a 23-year run at ICM Partners. Bernstein joins APA partners Steve Fisher and Debbie Deuble Hill in the publishing and media rights group. APA president Jim Osbourne announced Bernstein’s hire, effective Thursday. The addition is another big score for APA as the representation business continues to shift amid consolidation.
Over a long and enviable career, Bernstein has represented some of the most acclaimed novelists, authors and journalists in the marketplace and sold the rights to countless feature films, limited series and shows to major buyers.

Fifteen years ago, a mermaid was spotted in Tampa by Emma Roberts and JoJo. Aquamarine, loosely based on Alice Hoffman's 2001 young adult novel of the same name, centered on a pair of BFFs who befriend a blue-haired mermaid, played by Sara Paxton, and attempt to help her prove true love exists. Basically, think The Little Mermaid meets the Bratz movie. The Elizabeth Allen-directed fish-out-of-water teen comedy served as Roberts' first leading role in a feature film after spending years on Nickelodeon and was the first major acting job for JoJo, a singing sensation who had previously turned down the chance to star in one of the Disney Channel's biggest hits. While it didn't make quite a...

Our book section contributors list up the books we're most looking forward to this fall season — from the spooky to the cozy.
There's never a bad season of the year for reading. Whether it's winter, summer, spring, or fall, there's a reading habit that goes oh-so-well with the season. But there's something about fall—when the leaves are changing (at least in some parts of the world) and the nights are getting longer—that makes me want to curl up with the coziest of books or the most deliciously creepy short story we can find.

Yep, it's been two whole decades since Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock bewitched us in Practical Magic. Now, HBO Max is bringing us even more of the Owens family in a prequel series based off of Alice Hoffman's The Rules of Magic, according to Variety. So, in other words, I'm ready for it to be Halloween year-round!
The new streaming service, which is expected to launch in Spring of 2020, has ordered an hour-long pilot of the prequel series. Written by Jessica Jones's Melissa Rosenberg and Dana Baratta, The Rules of Magic will focus on the Owens kids - Frances (aka Franny), Bridget (aka Jet), and Vincent - three children living in 1960s New York City who struggle to cope with their magical abilities until they visit their Aunt Isabelle. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock learned their mystic practice from The Rules of Magic.
Being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage. Not at HBO Max, however. The not-yet-launched streaming service is making its own laws. The streamer will produce a series adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s novel The Rules of Magic, which is a prequel to Practical Magic, according to Variety. The 1998 film starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sorceress sisters on different paths. It was directed by Griffin Dunne.
HBO Max ordered a pilot for a one-hour show called which will center on siblings Jet, Franny, and Vincent Owens who have been kept isolated because of their abnormalities. They soon learn they are actually descended from a line of witches. The setting of Rules of Magic will move from Massachusetts to 1960s New York City. The sisters inspire fear rather than love.

HBO Max has added some more projects to its development slate.
One of which is a prequel to Practical Magic, per Deadline.
Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones) will executive produce and write Rules of Magic, an “epic, generational family drama set in 1960s New York City” that follows three siblings named Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens who find themselves facing "abnormalities" that have kept them apart from each other.
Related: Gossip Girl Reboot: Officially Happening!
The trio is forced to deal with grief, war, bigotry, and dark magic alongside a crazy curse that forces to keep them away from the path of love.
It's certainly an interesting hook for a series, and it's not difficult to draw similarities to Charmed (both the WB version and The CW's reboot).
Alice Hoffman wrote the Practical Magic novel that went on to be adapted to the 1998 movie of the same name which starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

Let me begin this review by saying mischief was most definitely afoot when the review copy of Galaxy Quest #3 was sent to me. Imagine my surprise when I finally opened up my review copy and failed to see the familiar Galaxy Quest crew, but instead met Abbey and her best friend Cate. I waited for a Thermian to pop up or for Brandon to stumble into a panel, but nothing happened. After a little digging, I discovered the truth behind this deviation from the main story. So while we will not be discussing what happens after Jason and the crew manage to land on Dryth, we will be looking at the comic I was sent because that’s how I roll. I hope everyone had a merry April Fool’s Day.

All episodes of “The Dovekeepers” were made available prior to broadcast.
Throwing its shawl into the Biblical recreation ring, CBS’s two-night miniseries The Dovekeepers looks to take the dry bedrock of history and chisel it into well-sculpted TV drama. It’s not the only recent attempt. With the help of reality show guru Mark Burnett and executive producer Roma Downey, History Channel’s good book adaptation The Bible received great ratings back in 2013. When the network tried to recapture that magic earlier this year with Sons of Liberty, a hunked up “interpretation” of the revolutionary war, the payoff was nowhere near as divine.
