Prolific author Anthony Horowitz has scripted mystery drama Nine Bodies In A Mexican Morgue, here are the details.
Anthony Horowitz is perhaps best known for creating the Alex Rider franchise, which so far comprises fourteen novels, seven short stories, a critically maligned 2006 film and a popular television drama on Amazon Prime, the third and final series of which aired last month. He has also written many standalone novels and the terrific Horowitz Horror books of horror stories for older children.
However, he is just as prolific writing for the screen, creating the brilliant time travel drama Crime Traveller, which starred Michael French and Red Dwarf star Chloe Annett, ITV drama Foyle’s War and the television adaptation of his novel Magpie Murders.
His latest series is Nine Bodies In A Mexican Morgue, which has been acquired by the BBC. The synopsis reads as follows:

One of the things that makes mystery and crime TV series so popular is the way the viewer usually solves the same mysteries that the main character does. Those who have watched through all the possible shows within this realm set in the modern day may want to take on yet another challenge and try to solve the crimes without having access to all the technology.
With no databases of DNA samples, no cell phone tracking and no Internet available for quick research, the detectives of the past centuries had to rely only on their deductive and interrogation skills to catch the criminals. Here are 8 shows with the best depictions of such work.

Whether you like it or not, Sherlock Holmes is the man “who never lived and will never die.” Ever since being created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, the iconic detective has been ever-present in popular culture: for 137 years, Sherlock Holmes has been investigating mind-boggling cases, uncovering conspiracies, and catching criminals. And he’s not stopping any time soon, we’ll tell you that much!
Sherlock Holmes Will Be Back on Pages
94 years after Conan Doyle’s death, the author’s descendants recently gave their blessing to writer Gareth Rubin (The Turnglass & The Winter Agent). Rubin will write a new book series about Sherlock Holmes, but this time, it won’t be just the iconic detective under the spotlight: titled Holmes and Moriarty, the new books will give his archnemesis just as much attention and time.

Those teen spies, they grow up so fast! “This show means so much to me. I’ve pretty much grown up — me and Brenock and Marli — we’ve grown up doing it,” agrees Otto Farrant of his Alex Rider experience. He’s not kidding. Along with aforementioned costars Brenock O’Connor and Marli Siu, who play his junior James Bond’s best pals and sometimes sidekicks Tom and Kyra, Farrant has spent nearly half a decade bringing Anthony Horowitz‘s YA best sellers about an underaged special-ops agent to rollicking, adrenalized life for Freevee (formerly known as IMDbTV). “I think it was five years ago that I did my first audition. We’ve got three seasons and I think this season is the best one yet.” “It does feel like an enormous journey to have made,” echoes book series author and exec producer Horowitz. “And of course, because of the time...

Come, sit, and hear sad stories of what it was like to be a young British millennial nerd. The nineties were, in many ways, a dark age for British science fiction. Doctor Who was gone, apart from one Children in Need crossover with EastEnders – Dimensions in Time in 1993 – and an American co-produced movie simply called “Doctor Who” (which we would all pretend to hate while treasuring our VHS recording and commemorative Radio Times issue).
Over the pond, TV sci-fi was in the middle of a golden age, with three Star Trek series, Babylon 5, Farscape, The X-Files and Stargate Sg-1 only marking the tip of a science fictional iceberg. But British fans could only watch these episodes months or even years after the fact, particularly if they had only access to terrestrial television, and were forced to paw through magazines and websites for reviews and plot summaries to sate their hunger.

Now that Endeavour has ended for good, there are a few obvious places for fans to go in search of more of the crossword-solving, bitter-drinking, classics-quoting Oxford detective. The first are Colin Dexter’s novels, which established the character. The second is the original ITV show Inspector Morse based on those books, which starred John Thaw in the title role for 33 feature-length episodes between 1987 and 2000. Thirdly, there’s sequel Lewis, which continued the story of Morse’s underling Robbie through his own inspector days, and which also ran for 33 episodes, up until 2015. Both are currently streamable on BritBox in the UK and US, as well as Itvx, and PBS Masterpiece.
The likelihood though, is that those three will have already been exhausted by Morse devotees, so here are some recommendations of detective shows with a touch of Endeavour about them, whether it’s a melancholic lead with a brilliant mind,...

Bond rumors have been following Idris Elba around for many years, but the actor admitted during a recent interview on the “SmartLess” podcast that he got turned off from the idea of playing 007 when the conversation became dominated by race. Back in 2015, for example, the author Anthony Horowitz notoriously wrote that Elba was “too street” to play James Bond.
“The truth is, I was super complimented for a long time about this,” Elba said about originally embracing the idea about playing Bond. “I was like, ‘This is crazy!’ James Bond…We’re all actors and we understand that role. It’s one of those coveted [roles]. Being asked to be James Bond was like, ‘Ok, you’ve sort of reached the pinnacle’. That’s one of those things the whole world has a vote in.”

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Magpie Murders finale.
With Magpie Murders, you get double bubble – one investigation in the ‘real’ world as literary editor Susan Ryeland sleuths her way around modern-day Suffolk after the death of one of her authors, plus a 1950s-set dramatisation of that author’s latest detective novel. Both stories are told side by side on screen as actors play dual roles, and Anthony Horowitz’s adaptation of his own novel keeps multiple plates spinning. All that, plus a truly lovely wardrobe worn by the impeccably dressed Lesley Manville in the lead role of Ryeland, and a new instant favourite detective in Tim McMullan’s Poirot-tinged Atticus Pünd. What more could cosy crime fans ask for?
Another series is one thing – a wish that’s already been granted. Expect Moonflower Murders to start filming in Dublin later this year, ready to debut on the BBC...

It's no secret that despite generally being seen as the ultimate on-screen James Bond, Sean Connery had a rocky relationship with the character that made his career. Landing the role of 007 proved to be a double-edged sword for the actor, who at various points has seemed to resent his association with the franchise. Most infamously, he was heard to remark -- per The Hollywood Reporter -- that he had "always hated that damn James Bond" and would "like to kill him."
Initially caught off-guard by the level of fame that came with portraying the English super-spy, Connery would, over time, soften on Bond. By the time IndieWire spoke to him in 2020, he was, as the outlet noted, "full of pride," when talking about his most famous role — emphasizing how the films' "refreshing" style resonated with audiences in the '60s. Bond's impeccable style, combined with his strength and wit made for an irresistible product.

Roald Dahl doesn’t exactly scream controversy in the traditional sense, but it appears that a form of “cancel culture” is hitting the children’s book author by way of Matilda, Mr. Fox, Augustus Gloop, and many more.
The latest editions of several of Roald Dahl’s most beloved works contain a warning of sorts that reads: “The wonderful words of Roald Dahl can transport you to different worlds and introduce you to the most marvellous characters. This book was written many years ago, and so we regularly review the language to ensure that it can continue to be enjoyed by all today.”
The Telegraph has compiled dozens upon dozens of examples of the changes publisher Puffin has made, ranging from pronoun tweaks to complete character betrayals. Here are just a few examples of how Roald Dahl’s words have been altered or removed altogether:

As part of its Tuesday panel at the Television Critics Association 2023 winter press tour, Masterpiece has announced two new projects including a biographical series about Noele “Nolly” Gordon starring Helena Bonham Carter and “Moonflower Murders,” the follow up project to “Magpie Murders,” are in the works for the network.
“Nolly” tells the story of the British soap opera legend whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. As one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and ’70s, Gordon is described as a woman who refused to play by the rules and ultimately transformed into a forgotten icon after the industry turned on her. Carter will star in the titular role.
“Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies penned the script. “Nolly” marks the first production from Nicola Shindler’s new production company Quay Street Productions, which is part of ITV Studios.

Somehow it seems fitting that on a week when we’re mourning the great Angela Lansbury, who for 12 years played one of TV’s most beloved female sleuths, PBS‘ Masterpiece Mystery! franchise devotes its entire Sunday lineup for the next six weeks to three very different series where women take the leading role in discovering whodunit. Jessica would be so proud. Magpie Murders (Credit: Eleventh Hour Films/Nick Wall/PBS) A mystery lover’s delight, Magpie Murders is a whodunit wrapped in a whodunit, an homage to the genre’s most revered classics that adds clever twists of its own. Anthony Horowitz (Foyle’s War) adapts his bestselling novel, and if the TV version lacks some of the book’s formal brilliance and literary showmanship, it’s still a superior brainteaser. “Is there anything more useless than a whodunit without the ending?” barks veteran editor Susan Ryeland (the delightful Lesley Manville...

Daniel Craig had a hard time remembering his lauded Southern drawl for the upcoming Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Craig plays detective Benoit Blanc, whose accent Ransom Drysdale (played by Chris Evans) describes as “Kentucky-fried Foghorn Leghorn drawl” – a far cry from the James Bond star’s real British accent.
In order to do his character justice, Craig says he enlisted the help of a dialect coach before returning for the sequel.
“I went away to work with an accent coach for three or four months before we started shooting,” Craig told Empire magazine.
“I’d forgotten the accent and I didn’t want to do a pastiche. I wanted to make it as grounded and as anchored in reality as possible.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Craig said James Bond helped him deal with the pressure of returning to a beloved franchise.

Disney is being severely criticised for removing Avatar from its Disney Plus library.
Avatar appeared on the streaming service following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, with many deciding to watch James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster ahead of the sequel, which is set to be released in December.
However, it’s being highlighted that Avatar has been removed and is no longer available to stream on the service anywhere in the world.
While unconfirmed, the reasoning for its removal is believed to be due to the fact that Avatar is being re-released in cinemas, ahead of the sequel, on 23 September.
Many are calling Disney out for removing the film without telling people, in what is being branded a money-oriented decision designed to get more people to buy tickets to see the film on the big screen. The move has been branded both “stupid” and “concerning” by Twitter users.
“So @disneyplus removed #Avatar.

We get two whodunits for the price of one in the twisty six-parter Magpie Murders, adapted by Anthony Horowitz from his bestseller. Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) stars as shrewd British book editor Susan Ryeland, who becomes convinced her top author, Alan Conway (Conleth Hill), was killed after he turns in his final mystery minus the last chapter. (Credit: Bernard Walsh/PBS) To solve both murders, she needs those missing pages, and she gets advice from an unlikely source: the detective in Conway’s 1950s-set novel, Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan), whom she talks with in her mind as Pünd’s investigation simultaneously unfolds. “It’s weird, isn’t it?” jokes Manville. That device (unique to the TV series), and the fact that Susan defies the conventions of women her age, appealed to the Oscar nominee. “She’s chosen not to get married, not to have children. She’s...

Exclusive: Anthony Horowitz believes his upcoming Magpie Murders adaptation is “the first time I’ve really got it right,” and has stated he will no longer write on classic TV murder mysteries.

Timothy Spall will star alongside Lesley Manville in the Masterpiece, BritBox UK and Eleventh Hour Films adaptation of “Magpie Murders,” Anthony Horowitz’s international bestseller.
Spall will play detective Atticus Pünd in the mystery-within-a-mystery in “Magpie Murders.” In the story, book editor Susan Ryeland (Manville) sits down to read the latest manuscript written by her popular author, Alan Conway, the writer behind the popular Atticus Pünd mystery series. When she discovers that its final chapter is missing, she goes to Conway’s house only to find his dead body. The story goes back and forth between the cozy case Pünd was trying to crack and Ryeland’s investigation of what happened to Conway.
Horowitz, who created the BBC mystery shows “Foyle’s War” and “Midsomer Murders,” has adapted “Magpie Murders” as a six-episode series. Production begins next week in England and Ireland, and “Magpie Murders” will air on Masterpiece on PBS next year.
