Planes: Fire and Rescue
Written by Jeffrey M. Howard
Directed by Roberts Gannaway
USA, 2014
There’s a moment in Planes: Fire and Rescue where one of the sentient vehicles is prompted to “drop the needle.” The request is followed by a series of quick cuts: a small anthropomorphic forklift pulls out a record from its sleeve, slams in onto a turntable, and lowers the tonearm. Then, the unmistakable infinite-hammer-on riff to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” appears on the soundtrack, accompanying a getting-ready-to-slay-a-fire montage sequence. “Wait a second,” one might ask, “LPs exist in this universe? Hold on, AC/DC exist in this universe? Are they planes? Or cars? But if they’re cars, how in the hell did Angus Young, or whatever his weird car pun name is, play that awesome riff that clearly necessitates some kind of phalanx? Wait, maybe AC/DC did exist in some distant...

The first trailer has arrived for Disney's "Planes" follow-up called "Fire and Rescue." The offshoot of the cars franchise directed by Jeffrey M. Howard, features the voice talents of Dane Cook, Julie Bowen, Danny Pardo and others. The first "Planes" opened on August 9th, 2013 and even though it didn't turn in gargantuan worldwide figures, they were decent enough at $219.7 worldwide, to warrant a sequel with a $50 million production budget easily covered on U.S. soil, where it made over $90 million.

The Planes Blu-Ray has a release date, and you obviously want to get this one on your calendar, both because you know you want it, and because it’s smack dab in holiday buying season.
You may recall that during our Podcast review that covered Planes, I wasn’t all that favorable of it, but that was mostly because I was holding it to Pixar standards. I didn’t exactly dislike it, but you expect so much at this point that I hoped for more. Of course, the kids wanted nothing to do with my snooty, movie critic take on things, and loved it.
You might also recall that I wondered what direction they would take on the bonus features when this one came out, and it looks as though they are going a bit minimalist. A bad move, if you ask me, but it still looks like we have...

★★☆☆☆ Following the enormous commercial success of Pixar's merch machine Cars (2006) and its sequel, it's unsurprising - if a little disheartening - that we now have Planes (2013), a Disney spin-off set in the same universe. You'd be forgiven for thinking that the project sounds lazy, particularly for a studio known for its originality, and over the course of 92 underwhelming minutes these suspicions are confirmed. Directed by Klay Hall, the extremely predictable narrative follows protagonist Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook), a lowly crop-duster with dreams of competing with his heroes in the world famous global aerial race.
With support from trusty friend and ace mechanic Dottie (Teri Hatcher), cheerful fuel truck Chug (Brad Garrett) and eventual mentor Skipper (Stacy Keach), Dusty soon qualifies for the competition. Not only will he have to defeat his formidable rivals - including arrogant champion and bully Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith) - he must also overcome fear of heights.

Ever since the Planes-Tow Mater short film on Cars 2 and the first trailer for a Planes feature film, there was some small hope that this would be a fun expanded world of Cars taken to the skies. Once it was pegged as a direct-to-video release though, some worry started to settle into the air. Then it was noticeable that Pixar removed itself from the production, giving all the credit to Disney, but still marketing it “from Above the World of Cars.” That meant that Disney must have crunched the numbers of the potential licensing deals they could make and get kids (and their parents) to buy into. Unfortunately, Disney’s Planes should have stayed a DVD release.
Disney Animation has been hit or miss as both Bolt and Wreck-It Ralph were enjoyable and original. Like Ralph, John Lasseter was producing Planes, so there was some hope. Meanwhile, Pixar...

There are funnier cartoons than the "Cars" universe of movies, and smarter ones and animated films with more heart.
But there's nothing like the "World of 'Cars'" for toy tie-ins, or so the reasoning must have been for "Planes," the worst of the animated blockbusters to come our way this summer. A bland, joyless plucky-little-plane race comedy, it's even more starved of jokes than Pixar's "Monsters University," as if that was possible.
"Planes" is about a crop duster named Dusty who longs to be more "than just what I was built for. I've flown thousands of miles and I've never been anywhere."
His elders (Cedric the Entertainer) might remind him that "You were built for seed, not speed." But Dusty longs to escape Propwash Junction, and with the help of his fuel truck pal (Brad Garrett) and trusty mechanic forklift (Teri Hatcher), he might just get into the round-the-world race and win fame and glory.

Planes

USA, 2013
The story goes, per a five-part PBS documentary back in the early 2000s about the history of the Broadway musical, that when Andrew Lloyd Webber was shopping around Cats to be performed and produced in the United States, he reached out to iconic producer/director/Stephen Sondheim collaborator Harold Prince. Webber pitched Prince on Cats, inspired by T.S. Eliot’s book of feline-centric poetry, and when he was finished, Prince admitted to not grasping the deeper metaphor. Were the cats representative of the English class system? Was one of the cats a member of the royal family? What piece had Prince not figured out yet, he wondered. Webber paused, then said, “Hal. It’s about cats.”
One imagines that, if he was forced to provide details about the so-called “World of Cars,” John Lasseter would answer similarly. Does it...

The first shot of Disney’s latest animated feature, is almost disclaimer-like, in telling you you’re in the ‘world of Cars’. Indeed the film is set in the same world as Pixar’s 2006 and 2011 Cars films, but this isn’t a Pixar film, and so having the expectations of one from Planes is probably unfair.
Dusty Crophopper, voiced by Dane Cook, dreams of being a racer, but instead is stuck in the life of fertilising crops. He isn’t built to race, and he’s afraid of heights, but it doesn’t stop him from trying. Determined to prove himself, he competes in Wings of the Globe, a race that literally goes all the way round the world.

So, thanks to our friends over at IMPAwards, we have three new posters up for Disney's Planes and, they're well...just there. That's as close as I can get to the emotions these images stir up. The film, which is "from above the world of cars," could however turn out to be a blast, I'm just not convinced as the whole affair seems lackluster for the most part. Planes opens August 9th under the direction of Klay Hall (Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, Father of the Pride, King of the Hill), with a script by Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue writer Jeffrey M. Howard.

Taking into account everything we.ve seen of Disney.s upcoming Cars spinoff Planes, there doesn.t seem to be any decent reason for adults without children to pre-emptively place their hands on their wallets. Above is the first full-length trailer for the film, thanks to Moviefone, and if it does anything, it makes 3D glasses with attached earplugs look like a pretty great idea. As with the purely visual teaser trailer Disney released a couple of weeks ago, the animation during the flight-filled scenes looks great; and even if the animation style is still way too cartoonish, at least the film will have a larger-than-average scope and some pretty dazzling effects work to go along with its all-star cast and drab one-liners. One of the characters defends calling Old Yeller an underdog story because there is a dog in it. Jeffrey M. Howard.s screenplay hopefully has a few...

Walt Disney Studios has released a brand new trailer for Planes, an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty, a crop duster plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. One of the biggest releases this week comes in the form of Disney's "Tinker Bell" on Blu-ray as well as the standard widescreen version. Naturally, the Blu-ray would be the one to go for in terms of visual quality. Bradley Raymond, helmer of "The Lion King 1½" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," directs from the writing by Jeffrey M. Howard based on the much-belobed characters created by J.M. Barrie. Enter the magical world of fairies and meet the enchanting creatures of Pixie Hollow, who "nurture nature" and bring about the change of the seasons. Changing the colors of the leaves, moving a sunbeam to melt snow, waking animals from their winter slumber, or giving a patch of sproutlings a sprinkle of water are all within the realm of these...
