As a native Texan and dutiful SXSW attendee traveling to the Czech Republic, I was thrilled to hear that Richard Linklater and the Austin Film Society would be the subject of a Tribute at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The 53rd edition of the Czech-based event that concluded July 7 screened an early print of Linklater’s $23,000 indie phenomenon Slacker (of which he introduced wearing an Astros baseball jersey); Eagle Pennell’s 1983 cult classic Last Night at the Alamo; Robert Rodriguez’s inaugural low-budget hit El Mariachi; and Tom Huckabee and William Van Overbeek’s surreal, image-laden doc Death of a […]...

Actors Juli (no “e”!) Erickson and Gabriel Horn were an absolute delight to speak with. Both come from very different generations of acting (and life), but their chemistry meshes so well it shows both on-screen and off. They’re currently at the Dallas International Film Festival with writer/director Tom Huckabee promoting their film, Carried Away. In the movie, aspiring actor Ed Franklin (Gabriel Horn) comes home for Christmas to visit his family who all are, let’s say, crazy. None of them get along and when he finds out his granny (the very funny Juli Erickson) has been put in a nursing home, he breaks her out and together they embark on a hilarious road trip.

Tom Huckabee lives in Texas but is no stranger to Hollywood. Back in 1983 he wrote, directed, and produced Taking Tiger Mountain, starring Bill Paxton. It’s been roughly 27 years since that film had its debut, and now he’s back with the comedy, Carried Away.
