The first trailer has been unveiled for Cannes, Emmy and Peabody-winning director Marc Levin’s documentary “It’s Basic,” which will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
The film examines several pilot programs launched in the U.S. that test the effects of giving everyday people an extra $500 to $1,000 monthly, with no strings attached. It aims to present an unbiased account of the benefits, criticisms, and outcomes of providing unconditional money to people in need, and examines whether Basic Income pilot programs eradicate child poverty and level the racial playing field through community-centric solutions.
The documentary features commentary by Michael Tubbs, the founder of Mayors for Guaranteed Income. At 26, Tubbs became mayor of Stockton, California. Under his stewardship, the city saw a 40% drop in homicides in 2018 and 2019, led the state in the decline of officer-involved shootings in 2019, was named the second most financially healthy city in California and...

Goodbye’s never an easy thing to say.
And unfortunately, in order to preserve the decades-spanning show Doctor Who, fans have had to get used to the sad act. As we’ve all painfully learned, every so often, the Time Lord must undergo an involuntary regeneration (no matter how badly David Tennant doesn’t want to go), and after a spectacular display, we’re introduced to a new-looking version of the character.
Famously, the most recent transformation saw the series introduce its first female Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker. Though audiences have yet to say goodbye to her, there’ve been 12 other Doctors who’ve undergone the change. And that’s all without mentioning the dozens of side characters we’ve had to part ways with since the show’s start over 50 years ago.

Facebook has responded to a call by one of its co-founders for the social media giant’s break-up.
Nick Clegg, Facebook’s VP for global affairs and communications, wrote in the New York Times that “big in itself isn’t bad” and said that such massive success “should not be penalized.”
Clegg was responding to a May 9 op-ed from Chris Hughes, who co-founded the company with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, then left in 2007. Hughes said elected officials should do something about the growing monopoly, noting that Facebook’s influence was growing too powerful, calling it “unprecedented and un-American.” He also said that the company was not being accountable, particularly on privacy concerns and election interference.
In the response, Clegg admitted that Facebook does need to be held to account, but shouldn’t be broken up by those fears. “Anyone worried about the challenges we face in an online world...

Chris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook, says the company has become a monopoly that should be broken up.
In an opinion piece published today by The New York Times, Hughes, who liquidated his Facebook shares in 2012 and writes that he doesn’t “invest directly in any social media companies,” says his old partner, college classmate and current Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has amassed “unchecked power” that goes “far beyond that of anyone else in the private sector or in government.”
Noting that he last saw Zuckerberg in the summer of 2017, Hughes writes, “Since then, Mark’s personal reputation and the reputation of Facebook have taken a nose-dive. The company’s mistakes — the sloppy privacy practices that dropped tens of millions of users’ data into a political consulting firm’s lap; the slow response to Russian agents, violent rhetoric and fake news; and the unbounded drive to capture ever more of...

A week ago, every 2020 candidate filed their first-quarter financial reports with the Federal Election Commission. The reports track every dollar a candidate raised and spent, offering the first inside glimpse of the election and how the candidates are stacking up. President Trump, who held his first 2020 campaign rally less than a month after he was inaugurated, has the largest war chest of anyone in the field. But the candidate with the highest percentage of small-dollar donors — a key indicator of broad-based public support — is Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, followed closely...

The death of former “Love Island” contestant Mike Thalassitis has led to calls for the producers of this and other reality shows to take greater steps to ensure that participants are properly equipped to handle the effects of being in the spotlight – before, during, and after they appear on TV.
Thalassitis, who had been dealing with a recent family bereavement, was found hanged in a park near his home in London on Saturday in an apparent suicide. Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious.
Fellow participants on the ITV show and others who knew him paid tribute, and several criticized the show’s producers for not making better provision for contestants’ welfare. A wider debate is now underway in the U.K. about reality producers’ duty of care to people who appear on their shows.

Facebook co-founder and billionaire Chris Hughes officially scrapped his plan to rebuild the century-old New Republic magazine this morning when he announced that he had sold it to Win McCormack, a publisher based in Portland, Oregon. Amanda Holden has reflected on her affair with Neil Morrisey, and insisted that she's "never been naughty" during her current marriage.
Speaking to The Mirror, the Britain's Got Talent presenter commented that husband Chris Hughes "wears the trousers" in their relationship.
"Chris wears the trousers, but I choose them!" Holden joked. "I've never been naughty [pauses]… Well, apart from when I had the affair with Neil [Morrissey]. Apart from that, I was, and still am, a very good girl."
Holden welcomed her first child with record producer partner Hughes in 2006 and the couple tied the knot two years later, before having their second daughter - following drastic medical complications - in 2012.
The 44-year-old TV star and actress's first marriage was to Corrie star Les Dennis in 1995, but after her highly-publicised affair with Men Behaving Badly's Neil Morrisey in 2000, the pair went on to divorce three years later.

The New Republic owner Chris Hughes has finally opened up about his fall from “knight in shining armor” to “Antichrist, or something pretty close to it” after his quest to rescue the storied magazine soured along with his golden boy status. In Vanity Fair’s July issue, the former tech mogul indicated that The New Republic staff resisted change and balked at filing stories to the web. He described a fearful East Coast mentality versus a more technologically creative West Coast. But he knows he handled things badly. “I fucked up,” he said to a colleague as publication began to implode.

There is barely a person in the western world who hasn’t heard of Facebook – the largest online social-networking service on the planet. Whether they are sharing photos with their friends, posting a status about how they are feeling or tagging themselves at a venue to show exactly what they are up to, the world’s population have become obsessed with social media – and most particularly Facebook.
Launched by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, in little over a decade Facebook has gone on to dominate the online social-networking market – and there are no signs of its rapid expansion slowing down anytime soon.
Facebook’s CEO Zuckerberg – along with his Harvard University roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes – established the website for their fellow Harvard students, but eventually expanded it to the general Boston area and then to the world.
But what do we we actually know about Facebook?...

In its first issue since 50 plus staffers resigned in protest in December, The New Republic takes on itself and a “perceived legacy of racism” at the magazine.
In a 4,000 word cover story written by Canadian journalist Jeet Heer, the magazine addresses years of criticism of its stance on race.
In the piece, obtained by Politico, Heer notes the gap between Tnr’s liberalism and hostility African American readers feel.

The New Republic’s new editor Gabriel Snyder announced four new hires on Wednesday, marking the political magazine’s first move to replenish its ranks since over a dozen staffers quit in December, which forced a suspension in publication.
“This is the first wave of new hires we’ll be making, including in the DC office, so I’ll have more exciting updates soon on the staffing front in addition to continuing to add to our roster of contributors,” said Snyder in his editor’s letter, which was obtained by TheWrap.
