Ventana Sur: To dub in English or not to dub and the challenges of day-and-date releasing were among the topics sales agents addressed in Buenos Aires on December 2.
Organised under the auspices of the Blood Window genre sidebar, session participants advised the audience of Latin American filmmakers to conduct due diligence when selecting a sales agent, resist the allure of high up-front offers and hold on to digital rights.
Considering the setting and the various nationalities of the speakers, thoughts turned inevitably to the business of maximising a film’s global appeal.
London-based Jinga Films managing director Rosana Coutinho recounted how Canadian labs approached her about dubbing Alejandro Hidalgo’s Venezuelan smash The House At The End Of Time.
“I don’t want to prostitute your ideas but there is a difficulty in the market,” said Coutinho. ” I can close a deal tomorrow on [The House At The End Of Time] if I have an English dub, but I don’t...

As Clive Barker himself works on scripting a remake to Hellraiser, another one of his stories is about to find its way in front of the cameras. Want details? Read on!
Screen Daily reports that Raven Banner Enterainment has optioned Barker's short story "Jacqueline Ess: Her Will and Testament," which originally appeared in his anthology novel The Books of Blood. Many stories from the anthology have been turned into feature films in the past, including Rawhead Rex and Midnight Meat Train.
"Jacqueline Ess" tells the story of a beautiful woman with the ability to horrifically change people’s body shapes simply with her mind. Her ability gives her the power to grant men the ultimate sexual experience, albeit one that always proves fatal. It’s a story of sex, power, and the extremes that await us at the limits of desire.
Raven Banner will produce with Barker’s Seraphim Films on board to executive produce.

It's been called the 'dustbin of London' and the 'armpit of the world' – but there are efforts afoot, on TV and in the country's art galleries, to redeem Essex's reputation
We need to talk about Essex. Surely no county has been so systematically defined and reduced. Simon Heffer's now-infamous Daily Telegraph editorial published in 1990 named the vomiting Thatcherites he encountered at Liverpool Street station as examples of "Essex Man". At around the same time, Chigwell provided the setting for the upwardly mobile prison widows in Birds of a Feather. More recently, of course, there has been Buckhurst Hill and Brentwood's "structured reality" pantomime, The Only Way is Essex. And while Channel 4's Educating Essex, filmed in Harlow, was funny and sensitive, its title seemed to imply that to teach an Essex kid anything was a novel idea.
The fact that Essex is maligned is hardly news. "It has...
