A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for August.
Jaws (1975) Universal Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo Available Now
Steven Spielberg’s classic thriller has been painstakingly restored from the original film elements. Amity Island has never been so beautiful. The movie itself seems to improve with age, with amazing performances and scenes that still manage to unnerve — Susan Backlinie’s death at the beginning is truly one of the most horrifying ever portrayed onscreen. Making this a true “special edition” is the long-awaited release of The Shark Is Still Working, an expansive documentary on the making and the impact of the 1975 film. All of the surviving cast and crew are interviewed along with several minutes of never-before-seen footage.
Special Features:
*Digitally remastered and fully restored from high resolution 35mm original film elements.
*Digital Copy of Jaws
*UltraViolet Copy of Jaws
*The Shark Is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy...

Allan Holdsworth: Hard Hat Area; None Too Soon (MoonJune)
Never mind what you've been told by the hagiographers of more famous six-stringers -- the contest for "greatest living British guitarist" is between John McLaughlin (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Allan Holdsworth (Soft Machine, Tony Williams Lifetime [as McLaughlin's replacement], U.K., Gong), and Holdsworth is my choice. That so much of his solo catalog (around twenty albums) has been hard to find in the U.S. has not helped his case here. Both of these reissues are important albums, for somewhat different reasons.
After a period where Holdsworth's albums had been pure products of the studio, with him laying down the guitar tracks (often guitar synthesizer) and having sessionmen overdub later, 1993's Hard Hat Area put an excellent band -- keyboardist Steve Hunt, bass guitarist Skuli Sverrisson, and drummer Gary Husband -- in the studio with him, interacting in the moment and even creating the closing track collaboratively.

Meteorite Men: Geoff Notkin Previews Season Three Premiere
Fans of smart, adventurous, documentary-style reality shows will be happy to learn that on Monday, November 28th, the Meteorite Men return to TV with their third season premiere on the Science Channel. I became a fan based on my affinity for all space-related topics and because they had their 'Meteorite Bike' built on another of my favorite reality shows, American Chopper. The Meteorite Men are Geoff Notkin and Steve Arnold, two 'rock stars' in the space-rock hunting world.
Geoff Notkin is an accomplished science writer and photographer, entrepreneur, musician (who'll be performing with rock band Feed on December 17th for a charity concert in Tucson), as well as meteorite hunter and show host. Born in NYC, Geoff spent his formative years with his parents in England. As a young child interested in science, a visit to London's Geological Museum awoke a...
