There was one occasion when Dev Anand, forced to quit a blue-collar job he depended on for sustenance, ripped his elder brother Chetan Anand of Rs (the then) princely sum of Rs 5,000 to launch a less than moral venture, and if this was not enough, began wooing the girl his younger brother Vijay ‘Goldie’ Anand fancied, and eventually in luring her away.

"Bhagne ki koshish mat karna. Humne tumhe chaaron taraf se gher liya hai. Bhalai isi mein hai ke tum apne aap ko kanoon ke hawaale kar do," or its near variants, became the template for the denouement of scores of action Hindi films from the 1950s to the 1980s, as a pistol-toting Iftekhar, usually accompanied by a squad of policemen, reached the spot to rescue the hero and heroine and/or round up the villains.
While his near-contemporary Jagdish Raj (Khurana) holds the record of maximum outings as a police officer in Hindi films (144), Iftekhar was not far behind with 75-odd such roles, playing an Inspector/Dsp/Sp/Commissioner in top films like "Ab Dilli Dur Nahin" (1957), "Guide" (1965), "Teesri Manzil" (1966), "Do Dooni Char" (1968), "Ittefaq" (1969), "Johny Mera Naam" (1970), "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" (1971), "Zanjeer" (1973), "Majboor" (1974), "Fakira" (1976), "Don" (1978) and "Krodhi" (1981), among others.

Melbourne, Nov 12 (Ians) After a topsy-turvy time in the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, the final of the tournament has arrived. If the unpredictable weather of Melbourne permits a full match, then fans are in store for a blazing final between a confident England and solid Pakistan on Sunday, which is ironically a repeat of the settings of the 1992 Odi World Cup final clash.
With both teams on their quest to win just their second T20 World Cup title, the heavy rain predicted for the final showdown on Sunday as well as on Monday, the reserve day, the trophy could be shared between the two teams. Fans will be praying to the cricketing gods to conjure up miraculous circumstances for the match to be held, even if it is a 10-overs a side affair.

Sydney, Nov 9 (Ians) New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first against Pakistan in the first semifinal of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg), here on Wednesday.
New Zealand, who have played impressive cricket throughout the tournament so far, didn’t make any change in their playing XI for this clash.
“We are gonna have a bat. Used surface, not much grass on it. We’re going with the same team. Same pitch but different I reckon. It’s important we adjust to those changing conditions and assess quickly. There are a few unknowns, important we stick to our plans,” said Williamson at the toss.
“Our focus is on this game, what we want to do here and really try and express ourselves with the cricket that we’ve been playing,” he added.

Sydney, Nov 8 (Ians) A resurgent Pakistan and clinical New Zealand, who have had contrasting campaigns so far, will lock horns in a mouth-watering first semifinal of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg), here on Wednesday, with a common goal to book the berth in the all-important final of the mega event.
The Babaz Azam-led side lost their first two matches of the T20 World Cup against India and Zimbabwe and were on the verge of getting knocked out. However, they performed when it mattered, got a lifeline and now have a golden opportunity to go all the way in the tournament.
On the other hand, New Zealand began their campaign in style by thrashing the hosts Australia and eventually won four out of five Super 12 matches. They just lost to England in a high-quality contest but otherwise have been quite clinical in their efforts so far.

Adelaide, Nov 6 (Ians) Left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s four-wicket haul helped Pakistan confirm their semifinal spot in the Men’s T20 World Cup with a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their final Group 2 match of Super 12s at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
The unpredictable nature of the tournament meant that this clash became a virtual knockout game as Netherlands shocked South Africa by 13 runs at the same venue earlier in the day.
With the winner to go into the semifinals, Pakistan made the most of the unexpected lifeline as luck smiled on them to enter the last-four for the second time in as many editions of the tournament.
Afridi took four wickets while conceding 22 runs in his four overs to restrict Bangladesh to 127/8, after being 70/1 at one point. In reply, Pakistan chased down the total with 11 balls remaining despite some wobbles along the way to complete an entry...

Sydney, Nov 3 (Ians) Shadab Khan produced a brilliant all-round show while Iftikhar Ahmed and Shaheen Shah Afridi played their roles to perfection to keep Pakistans slim semifinal hopes alive in the Men’s T20 World Cup with a 33-run victory over South Africa via Dls method in a rain-reduced Group 2 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday.
The victory for Pakistan, who made 185/9 in 20 overs and restricted South Africa to 108/9 in 14 overs as per the adjustments by the Dls method, in Super 12s also meant that they maintained their perfect record over the Proteas in the history of Men’s T20 World Cups with their fourth victory in as many meetings. Pakistan are now in third place in Group 2 points table, pushing Bangladesh to fourth place.
On a chilly evening, South Africa made early strikes to push Pakistan on the back foot. Captain Babar Azam (6), Mohammad Rizwan (4) and Shan Masood (2) fell to Lungi Ngidi,...

India ended up losing the game to South Africa who perched themselves on top of the Super 12 Group 2 league table displacing India after that victory.
Both Ashwin and Axar were fielded in the game against the Netherlands on October 27 at the more spin-friendly Sydney Cricket Ground and played their part in the comprehensive victory for India by 56 runs.
Left-arm spinner Axar picked up 2 for 18 after deceiving Max O’Dowd with a perfectly-directed arm ball. He later added the scalp of Bas de Leede. He sent back two out of the top-three Netherlands batters.
Off-spinner Ashwin also picked up two wickets giving away 21 runs and both his victims, two down batter Colin Ackermann and number five Tom Cooper, were taken out in the space of four balls.
Both spinners were effective in unsettling the Netherlands top order and their strikes within the first 13 overs, along with the first blow by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar,...

New Delhi, Oct 29 (Ians) Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar feels that Pakistan will have to really look at the reality of their situation in the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup, especially after suffering a shock one-run loss to Zimbabwe at Perth in a Super 12 match on Thursday.
In Group 2, Pakistan are yet to open their account and are at fifth place after suffering consecutive losses to India and Zimbabwe, which has left their hopes of reaching the semi-finals hanging by a thread.
Apart from winning their remaining matches against Netherlands, Bangladesh and South Africa, the 2009 T20 World Cup champions would need for one between South Africa and Zimbabwe to win not more than one their remaining three matches.
“Well, they (Pakistan) will have to really stare at the reality now. What is the outcome? Yes, a lot of results have to go their way. Maybe, a couple of...

Lahore, Oct 14 (Ians) The Pakistan Cricket Board (Pcb) announced on Friday that left-handed batter Fakhar Zaman is included in Pakistan’s squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup, replacing leg-spinner Usman Qadir, who has been moved to the traveling reserves.
The change, as Pcb said in an official statement, was necessary as Qadir is yet to recover from a hairline fracture on his right thumb that he suffered during the September 25 T20I against England in Karachi. The leg-spinner will not be available for selection before October 22.
Fakhar, earlier enlisted as a reserve player, will arrive in Brisbane from London on Saturday along with left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who had been undergoing rehabilitation for a right-knee injury.
The duo will be available for selection in Pakistan’s warm-up matches against England (October 17) and Afghanistan (October 19), during which the team management will assess the left-handed batter Zaman’s fitness...

Christchurch, Oct 14 (Ians) Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and middle-order batter Mohammad Nawaz are pleased with the way the team’s middle-order — one of the weakest links in the side — is shaping up ahead of the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia, with the duo saying it has given the side plenty of confidence going into the mega-event, beginning in a few days.
Pakistan on Friday clinched the Tri-series defeating hosts New Zealand in the final by five wickets, with the middle-order, comprising Mohammad Nawaz (38 not out), Haider Ali (31) and Iftikhar Ahmed (25 not out) setting up the team’s victory as they chased down a 163-run target to clinch the title heading into the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Christchurch, Oct 11 (Ians) Pakistan’s famed top order of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shan Masoon failed to fire in cold Christchurch weather as they suffered a crushing nine-wicket defeat at the hands of New Zealand in a T20I Tri-series match here on Tuesday, with the visitors managing just 130/7 in their quota of overs.
New Zealand, aided by a half century from opener Finn Allen and 49 from Devon Conway scored the required runs with 23 balls to spare to avenge their six-wicket loss in the previous game of the Tri-series at the same venue on October 8.
As the temperature dipped to 13 degrees C at the Hagley Oval, New Zealand, familiar with the conditions, faced no hurdles in racing to victory with Allen and Conway putting on 117 runs for the first wicket in 13.3 overs.

Over his vibrantly colourful career, which has crossed the half-century mark and is still going strong, Amitabh Bachchan was paired with several generations of heroines and held his own against many male peers, as well as older and younger generations spanning Dilip Kumar to Shah Rukh Khan. His real test, however, was to maintain the upper hand when facing accomplished character actors, ranging from dastardly villains to steadfast friends, and even long-lost parents.
There are many such actors playing key roles in some of Bachchan’s iconic films – would Inspector Vijay Khanna been successful in tackling crime without the tip-offs from an anonymous drunk or proved his mettle against a lesser villain than Teja, would “(the fake) Don” have worked without the acumen of Dsp D’Silva or found himself in travails without the machinations of Vardhaman, or Sikandar found his ‘muqaddar’ without the advice of Dervish Baba.

Christchurch, Oct 9 (Ians) Shadab Khan’s cameo in Pakistan’s six-wicket win against New Zealand in a Tri-series match here has given Babar Azam plenty of options and the skipper indicated he has a “plan” for the cricketer in the Icc T20 World Cup, commencing on October 16.
Pakistan overhauled New Zealand’s target of 147, with Shadab, who was sent up the order, scoring 34 off just 22 balls to help his team achieve victory with 10 balls to spare.
“Definitely, we have a plan to send Shadab up to charge the bowlers, to utilise his skills,” said Babar Azam, who himself scored an unbeaten 79 as Pakistan completed the task in 18.2 overs for the loss of four wickets.
It was the first time Shadab has batted at No. 4 in a T20I and the 24-year-old slammed two fours and two sixes in a crucial 61-run stand with Azam to give the 2009 champions hope in the T20 World Cup.

Christchurch, Oct 7 (Ians) Wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan scored an unbeaten 78 and carried his bat throughout the innings as Pakistan kick-started their campaign in the tri-series in New Zealand with a 21-run win over Bangladesh at the Hagley Oval on Friday.
After Rizwan’s belligerent knock laced with seven fours and two sixes took Pakistan to 167/5, pacer Mohammad Wasim Jnr and left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz took three and two wickets respectively to restrict Bangladesh to 146/8 in 20 overs.
Pushed into batting first, Rizwan and captain Babar Azam (22 off 25 balls) added 52 runs for the first wicket in 7.1 overs. The ever-consistent opener, who hit his sixth half-century in last eight T20I innings, then added 42 more runs with Shan Masood, who made 31 off 22 deliveries.
Shan Masood (31 off 22) was Pakistan’s other key contributor, as Haider Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali couldn’t contribute much to reduce the tension around Pakistan’s fragile middle order.

Lahore, Oct 1 (Ians) Phil Salt smashed an unbeaten 88, at a strike rate of 214.63, as England cruised to an eight-wicket victory with 33 balls to spare in the sixth game of the seven-match T20I series against Pakistan here on Friday.
The win helped the team, led by stand-in skipper Moeen Ali, level the series 3-3 and turns Sunday’s encounter into a final before the two sides depart for Australia to finalise their preparations for the Icc T20 World Cup that commences on October 16.
Salt, vying for an opening berth alongside regular skipper Jos Buttler, had failed to fire in the series, but looked in sublime form on Friday as England reached the inning total of 170 with ease.

Lahore, Sep 29 (Ians) Babar Azam’s Pakistan defended their lowest score in Pakistan (145) in another thriller to go 3-2 up against England following a six-run victory in the seven-match T20I series at the Gaddafi Stadium here late on Wednesday.
Managing just 145 runs in 19 overs, thanks to superb bowling effort from England pace bowler Mark Wood (3/20) and Sam Curran (2/23), the host were counting on luck to win the game, but all six Pakistan bowlers bowled exceptionally well to restrict the visitors to 139/7 to help the hosts take a 3-2 lead in the series.
After edging England out by three runs in the fourth game at Karachi on Sunday, Mohammad Nawaz was phenomenal with the new ball and derailed England’s run chase from its onset with the wicket of Alex Hales, who trying to swat the left-arm orthodox down the ground edged the ball into the hands of short third-man.

Karachi, Sep 21 (Ians) England opening batter Alex Hales, returning to the side after more than three years, blasted a half-century as the visitors defeated Pakistan by six wickets with four balls to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the seven-match T20I series at the National Stadium here.
With Pakistan and England priming for the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia, Hales’ stunning return to the international game — aided by seven boundaries — and Harry Brook’s hitting at the back end, helped England overhaul Pakistan’s 158/7 in 19.2 overs.
With Hales giving a superb account of himself in just his maiden outing for England in three-and-a-half years, the opener could well be a key player in their campaign in the T20 World Cup next month.
The opener moved England to 47/1 from the powerplay with Phil Salt (10) and Dawid Malan (20), and pushed along all the way until the 17th over, where...
