President Biden on Tuesday officially designated Jessica Rosenworcel, who has been acting FCC chair since January, to be the permanent head of the telecommunications agency.
Rosenworcel, if she’s confirmed, would be the first woman to serve as FCC chair. In addition, Biden nominated Gigi Sohn, a longtime public advocate for open and affordable telecom services and former FCC staffer, to fill the vacant commissioner post at the agency. If she is confirmed, Sohn would be the first openly Lgbtiq+ commissioner in the FCC’s history.
The appointments would give Democrats a 3-2 advantage among FCC commissioners. Both Rosenworcel and Sohn are net neutrality supporters, indicating the agency will move forward to restore the FCC’s Open Internet order that was revoked under the Trump administration.
Among other appointments, Biden nominated Mozilla Foundation adviser Alan Davidson to be assistant secretary for communications and information at the Commerce Dept.’s National...

This article contains Cobra Kai spoilers.
Why aren’t there more Asians in Cobra Kai?
Since Cobra Kai first premiered on YouTube, The Los Angeles Times, Vanity Fair, and other publications have called out the series for its lack of Asianness. The series also scored poorly on UCLA’s 2020 Hollywood Diversity Report. Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) and Carmen (Vanessa Rubio) are the only non-white main characters. This was exacerbated when the recently-released season 3 excluded Aisha (Nichole Brown), a major character of color who was a fan favorite.
Granted, Cobra Kai does have a few non-white actors in reccurring roles. They just aren’t leads. Nate Oh plays Nathaniel, but he is a minor character with minimal development. Kyler (Joe Seo) was the first bully to appear in Cobra Kai constantly harassing Miguel. To their credit, the writers made him a wrestler instead of a stereotypical martial artist, just because he’s Asian.

If you're not off work today, you might be perusing online sales in your half-staffed office. Or you might be planning on attending a BBQ later. Whatever you're doing, don't wish people a "Happy Memorial Day." Here's why. Memorial Day descends from the Southern tradition of "Decoration Day," where families would travel to the cemeteries where their ancestors were interred to place flowers on their graves. Often, large groups of extended families would make the trip, religious ceremonies would take place and food would be served. Decoration Day used to reflect the cycles of farm life, taking place in late...

There was a time when two veteran straight actors such as John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, taking on the roles of a gay couple and their subsequent travails at married life would have been the tabloid equivalent of shock and awe. It still might raise some eyebrows, but Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange is a testimony to societal progress in terms of storytelling. Now it will face the box office as the Specialty title platforms this weekend via Sony Classics. A real-life gay marriage takes the spotlight this weekend courtesy of Starz Digital doc To Be Takei about the multi-faceted actor/activist and social media talent who is best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in TV’s original Star Trek. It will be joined by Millennium Entertainment’s Are You Here with Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler which will open day and date by Mad Men writer Matthew Weiner.

var brightcovevideoid = '2855932040001'; Bill Clinton and Oprah Winfrey, both of whom rose from humble beginnings to become two of the world's most powerful and visionary leaders, were honored Wednesday by President Obama with the nation's highest civilian award: the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The honors were bestowed on a day during which Obama honored the legacy of John F. Kennedy, who created the award, by laying a wreath at the assassinated president's gravesite as a nation remembers that terrible day in Dallas a half-century ago Friday. The day of tributes began at the White House, where Obama awarded the...

For so many of us, this past holiday weekend was about BBQs, pool parties and celebrating the beginning of summer. The fact that it was Memorial Day seemed, once again, to be an afterthought. Yet we remain at war, a fact that has fallen dangerously out of our national consciousness.
I think a big reason for this is that the war in Afghanistan, along with the one we fought for so long in Iraq, are so different from the conflicts of our past. Even though young men and women are fighting, and dying, under the flag of the United States, the country itself has been allowed to remain frighteningly detached. The burden of service is being borne by only a small percentage of our population who have answered the call to duty, often several times over. We like to talk a lot about a "volunteer military", but I believe that term should carry an asterisk.
