20 years ago today, Trainspotting began winning over audiences on its way to becoming a breakout British hit. The film, about drug addiction in Edinburgh, was released in the U.K. and Ireland on this day in 1996, and a U.S. release followed that summer. The film launched Ewan McGregor into international stardom — he was cast in the Star Wars prequels shortly afterward. Trainspotting was his second team-up with director Danny Boyle, following Boyle’s feature debut, Shallow Grave. Boyle went on to earn Oscar attention for Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. Diane, the teenager McGregor’s character becomes entangled with, was played by Kelly Macdonald, who turned 20 on the day of Trainspotting’s U.K./Ireland release. Boyle is currently working on a Trainspotting sequel that he plans to shoot later this year. Other notable February 23 happenings in pop culture history: • 1939: At the 11th Academy Awards, Frank Capra film You...

33 years ago today, at age 7, Drew Barrymore hosted “Saturday Night Live,” making her the youngest ever host of the NBC sketch comedy show. She still holds that record today, and she’s hosted the show five additional times since. Her 1982 gig on the show came five months after the release of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestiral.” She reprised her “E.T.” role when she played a homicidal Gertie on “SNL.” Above she’s pictured in the iconic healing E.T. pose with “SNL” cast members Tim Kazurinsky, Gary Kroeger, Brad Hall and Joe Piscopo. As for the second and third youngest “SNL” hosts, Macaulay Culkin and Fred Savage hold those titles, respectively. Other notable November 20 happenings in pop culture history: • 1955: Rock and roll pioneer Bo Diddley made his television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” • 1959: “The Twilight Zone” episode “Time Enough at Last” — featuring first aired. It featured Burgess Meredith in his...

When Motown: The Musical begins performances on Broadway March 11, Michael Jackson won't be there only in spirit. The King of Pop will be right on stage - portrayed by an actor, as will several of the other big-name powerhouses from the fabled Detroit hit factory: Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and their '60s record label's founder, Berry Gordy. (They can all be seen in a first-look video clip of the show, exclusive to People.com.) Raymond Luke Jr. plays the young Jackson, who, as part of the Jackson Five with his four older brothers,...

Call it one entertainment icon's tribute to another.
When Michael Jackson's classic release "Bad" debuted in 1987, Spike Lee's filmmaking career was just starting to take hold. The director pays tribute to the fifth-best-selling album of all time -- which yielded such singles as the title cut, "Man in the Mirror," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Smooth Criminal" and "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" -- in the documentary "Bad 25," which ABC gives a Thanksgiving night television premiere Thursday, Nov. 22.
Lee interviews such other Jackson collaborators as fellow moviemakers Martin Scorsese and Joe Pytka in creating a remembrance of how "Bad" came to be, utilizing archival footage that also recalls the global concert tour Jackson launched in support of the album. Results included sales of approximately 45 million copies and five chart-topping singles, a record tied only relatively recently by Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream."

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

American director best known for Bonnie and Clyde, he focused on disillusioned outsiders
Arthur Penn, who has died aged 88, was one of the major figures of Us television, stage and film in the 1960s and 70s when the three disciplines actively encouraged experimentation, innovation and challenging subject matter. "I think the 1960s generation was a state of mind," he said, "and it's really the one I've been in since I was born." He will be best remembered for Bonnie and Clyde (1967), a complex and lyrical study of violent outsiders whose lives became the stuff of myth.
The film, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and based on the exploits of the bank-robbing Barrow Gang in the 1930s, became a cause celebre. It was praised and attacked for its distortion, bad taste and glorification of violence in equal measure. Newsweek's critic, Joseph Morgenstern, retracted his initial view of the film's violence,...

Though it won't have the overwhelming cultural impact of his first performance on that stage back in 1964, Paul McCartney will return to the site of The Beatles' American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show when he makes his first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman this Wednesday night.
McCartney plays New York City beginning this Friday with three dates at the new Citi Field. The mini-tour will also take him to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, Fenway Park for two days, Atlanta's Piedmont Park, my hometown of Tulsa on August 17th, and then wrapping up at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium on August 19th.
Sir Paul is the only guest listed on Letterman's site for Wednesday, which announces that Paul will both perform and be interviewed. I would expect plenty of Beatles talk as well as a question or two about Michael Jackson, with whom McCartney recorded a couple of songs.
