Matthew Perry Remembered by ‘Odd Couple’ Co-Star Thomas Lennon: He ‘Was Always Trying to Get Better’
“Reno 911!” star Thomas Lennon worked closely with Matthew Perry on the CBS remake of “The Odd Couple,” which aired for three seasons and 38 episodes from 2015 and 2017. Perry developed and executive produced the show (with Danny Jacobson and Joe Keenan) and starred as Oscar Madison, opposite Lennon as Felix Unger. Lindsay Sloane, Yvette Nicole Brown and Wendell Pierce also starred in the series, based of course on the Neil Simon play (later made famous as a TV sitcom in the 1970s). It was a reunion for Lennon and Perry, who also worked together on the 2009 film “17 Again.” In that comedy, Perry and Lennon play best friends. Variety asked Lennon to offer his memories of working with Perry over the years; below, he shares this tribute.

Mad About You fans watched Paul and Jamie Buchman navigate married life for five seasons until they decided to add a baby to the mix. The arrival of Mabel Buchman didn’t exactly signal the end of the series, but Paul and Jamie navigated life together as a couple for much longer than they did as a family of three. There was a good reason for that. The team behind Mad About You feared the arrival of a baby would doom the series.
‘Mad About You’ co-creators Paul Reiser and Danny Jacobson thought a baby would end the series
Paul Reiser and Danny Jacobson created Mad About You together. They pitched the project as a series about how couples behave when it is just the two of them, far away from the prying eyes of friends, family, and the public. All along, the show was supposed to be about Paul and Jamie.

While nearly everybody remembers Paul Reiser as the star (alongside Helen Hunt) of Mad About You, a much smaller number of people recall that Reiser co-created the series and wrote nearly a season’s worth of its episodes. When Reiser and co-creator Danny Jacobson first pitched the idea to NBC, Reiser told us, they didn’t even reference any other comedies, because they wanted the show to look and feel different. Exclusive: Abby Quinn (Landline) is set to star opposite Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser in Mad About You, the upcoming limited event series for Spectrum Originals, a follow-up to the popular 1990s NBC comedy series.
Quinn will play Mabel, the grownup daughter of Paul (Reiser) and Jamie (Hunt) Buchman.
In its return, Mad About You will explore the modern marriage through the eyes of the Buchmans (Reiser and Hunt) as newly minted empty-nesters after dropping their unpredictable, hard-to-control daughter Mabel off at college.
On the original sitcom, Mabel — whose name was an acronym derived from a saying that Jamie’s mother liked: “Mothers Always Bring Extra Love” — was introduced at the start of Season 6. The infant/toddler was portrayed by two sets of twins during Season 6 and the show’s final seventh season. In the Season 6 episode “Letters to Mabel,” an 18-year-old Mabel is played by Meredith Bishop. In the series finale,...

Ahead of its reboot of long-running comedy Mad About You, Spectrum is launching all 164 episodes of the original series next month.
Charter Communications’ content platform will run the original series starring Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt for free on-demand starting August 1.
The broadcaster has struck a deal for the rights with Sony Pictures Television, which produced the series. Over seven seasons, ending in 1999, Reiser and Hunt played Paul and Jamie Buchman, a married couple in New York City who mine the gentle humor in domesticity and life’s everyday situations.
This comes ahead of the launch of the reboot in late 2019. In March, Spectrum Originals picked up the half-hour comedy Mad About You as a limited series with showrunner Peter Tolan. The new installment is to be set 20 years after the original series’ seven-season run ended on NBC. It will center on empty-nesters Paul and Jamie as they navigate their...

Mad About You was one of my very favorite shows when it was on, and especially in the years after, while it was still highly syndicated. I was a pretty young kid when I watched it, but I loved the dynamic between Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jamie (Helen Hunt), and was so in love with the fun couple who lived in New York with their dog, Murray, and watched movies and had a fun and humorous relationship. I have always loved Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt separately throughout their careers, and I felt like this show was just magic. With all that being said, I also have to say I Hated the series finale. It made me so mad and sad that I just ignored the ending in my brain.
Which is why I am so excited that Mad About You is being rebooted! Another series that I loved, but...

It’s been something of an open secret for a while that “Mad About You” had potential to be the latest ’90s sitcom to be revived for a new audience. In a surprise move on Wednesday, though, Spectrum announced that it would be the new home for a continuation of the series, slated to arrive in late 2019.
The series, which co-starred Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser as a PR rep and documentary filmmaker navigating both their marriage and the pitfalls of daily life in New York. Wednesday’s announcement confirmed that both Reiser and Hunt would be returning for these new episodes and will serve as executive producers.
Original series co-creator Danny Jacobson is on board as an executive consultant, but this continuation will be overseen by TV vet Peter Tolan. Previously, Tolan was a creator on the long-running FX series “Rescue Me” and a co-creator of “The Jim Gaffigan Show.

Helen Hunt is confident that a reboot of classic 1990s comedy Mad About You will happen but told Deadline she’s “resigned from handicapping when.”
This comes six months after her co-star Paul Reiser, who created the NBC comedy with Danny Jacobson, claimed he was not optimistic about the revival’s chances.
Hunt said that there had been “zero” developments since 2018, when the project looked to be picking up steam. Sony Pictures Television had tapped top comedy showrunner Peter Tolan to write and showrun the revival, and Hunt and Reiser were closing deals to reprise their roles.
She said, “We’re right where we were. It’s not not going to happen and it’s not set. The news is that nothing has moved in one year. It’s a little bit frustrating. I am rooting for it. I sort of think it will [happen], but I’m sort of resigned from handicapping when or if.

No talent was announced in advance of Saturday’s “Deadpool 2” panel at San-Diego Comic Con, but big names from the Fox sequel showed up, including Ryan Reynolds. The film’s star and producer was joined by director David Leitch, fellow actors Zazie Beetz (Domino), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Stefan Kapičić (Colussus), as well as his co-screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Moderating duties fell to Karan Soni, who plays a New York City cab driver in the franchise.
No mention was made of “X-Force,” the next film featuring Reynolds and Beetz’s characters, which reportedly begins shooting in October. Instead, the group spent an hour promoting the Blu-ray release of “Deadpool 2” (August 21), set to feature an extended cut with jokes and scenes omitted from the theatrical version.

Don’t go predicting Helen Hunt or Paul Reiser for the 2019 Emmys just yet because the “Mad About You” revival might not happen after all. In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Reiser says the project is “kind of stuck in the business end of it now.”

Looks like we’re closer to a Mad About You revival. Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser have closed their deals with Sony Pictures TV to reprise their roles as married New York couple Paul and Jamie Buchman, sources have confirmed. Talks had been ongoing for several months.
Mad About You, co-created by Reiser and Danny Jacobson, ran seven seasons from 1992 to 1999 on NBC and won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Sony TV also produced a Mad About You adaptation in China. It has been reported that the revival would reconnect audiences with present-day Paul and Jamie, who are suffering from a case of empty nest syndrome as their 17-year-old daughter Mabel goes to college.
In an appearance today on Ellen, Hunt revealed she and Reiser have been talking about a possible reboot and are hoping it can happen. “It’s not for sure yet, I hope it is” Hunt told host Ellen DeGeneres.

Don’t be mad at us, but another TV revival is close to becoming a reality.
Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt have signed on to reprise the lead roles in a revival of Mad About You, according to EW.com. Danny Jacobson, who co-created the original 1992-99 NBC sitcom with Reiser, has also closed a deal with producers Sony Pictures Television to return. The revival doesn’t have a network attached to it yet, but with the runaway ratings success of fellow ’90s revivals Roseanne and Will & Grace, it’s just a matter of when (and where), and not if.
