Norby Walters, the onetime music agent who ran the annual “Night of 100 Stars” Oscar party for years and hosted an iconic low-stakes poker party for actors, died December 12. He was 91. His son, Walters Media Group founder and former Bold Films CEO Gary Michael Walters, confirmed the news but did not provide details.
Born Norbert Meyer, in 1952 Walters started booking jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz into his father’s bar.
Walters and his brother, Walter took over a place from their father and dubbed it Norby & Walter’s Bel Air, but its sign had no ampersand — which led to the name Walters would use during his career. He later took over a failing nightclub located next to the world-famous Copacabana, dubbed it Norby Walters’s Supper Club, and attracted a who’s who of boldfaced New York City names.
“What was I going to do?...

Artists don’t always appreciate other artists. Quentin Tarantino was a massive fan of Elvis Presley but not The Beatles. On top of that, he preferred a band that’s often accused of copying The Beatles to The Beatles themselves.
Quentin Tarantino rejected The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and many other rock stars
In the 2022 book Cinema Speculation, Tarantino discussed learning about music history from his friend Floyd. “I was all ears about this firsthand rock ‘n’ roll history, because I wasn’t into ’70s white-boy rock,” he said. “I didn’t give a f*** about Kiss, I didn’t give a f*** about Aerosmith, I didn’t give a f*** about Alice Cooper or Black Sabbath or Jethro Tull. I didn’t own Frampton Comes Alive! I openly rejected that entire culture.
“At 16, I think I heard of Bruce Springsteen, but I’d never heard Bruce Springsteen,” he added.

The “Dancing with the Stars” Season 32 finale is the show’s biggest one yet. Not only are five couples vying for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy for the first time, but the episode will be three hours long. That’s a whole “Oppenheimer,” but just shy of a full “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The five couples will perform two routines on Tuesday: a redemption dance and the always anticipated freestyle. Jason Mraz will perform three times as he’ll also croon his tune (and Week 1 song) “I Feel Like Dancing” while the tour pros hit the hardwood in a routine choreographed by Mandy Moore.
To fill out the 180 minutes, the finale will also feature all Season 32 couples performing to “Young Hearts Run Free” by Candi Staton and a holiday routine set to Mariah Carey‘s “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” featuring the song and dance styles of Alfonso Ribeiro,...

It’s Motown Night on “Dancing with the Stars” this week and nothing says “Motown” more than… Michael Strahan. The “Good Morning America” co-anchor will guest-judge the remaining 12 couples’ routines to soul hits.
Prepare yourself for a whole lotta foxtrots. Half of the dances are foxtrots and the other six are two quicksteps, one cha-cha, one tango, one rumba and one jive. Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach have the jive, marking the second consecutive week they are the only couple assigned a particular dance style (last week was rumba). Tptb are really testing out his extra vertebrae, huh?
After sitting out last week due to Covid-19, Artem Chigvintsev is back in the ballroom this week with Charity Lawson.

Duran Duran throw a virtual monsters’ ball in their video for “Danse Macabre,” the title track of their upcoming album, which comes out just before Halloween on Oct. 27. The music features the return of the band’s former guitarist, Warren Cuccurullo, since he left the group in 2001.

Duran Duran have announced the release of their 16th studio album, Danse Macabre, due out on October 27th via Tape Modern/BMG. With Halloween as its “key theme,” the album not only features a batch of new songs, but also a number of fun guests and several covers, including tunes by Billie Eilish, Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones, and more.
Along with the album announcement, the band has also shared the record’s title track, “Danse Macabre,” as a lead single, with a fittingly spooky video in tow. Watch the new music video below.
According to the press release, Danse Macabre and its Halloween theme were inspired by Duran Duran’s 2022 Halloween show, in which they employed “glorious gothic visuals” and a number of fun cover songs to create a “dark soundtrack of horror and humor.” As the band’s Nick Rhodes explained: “That evening inspired us to explore further and to make an album,...

It’s quiet in the Adidas office. Staff shuffle amongst themselves, having hushed conversations yet alert, waiting for the arrival of hip-hop’s greatest trio, Run-d.M.C.
Large glass windows span the entire length of the concrete room, overlooking Manhattan’s downtown area and into Brooklyn. Everything seems small in comparison, the tall ceiling dwarfing what lay below. But when Darryl McDaniels and Joseph Simmons, surviving members of Run-d.M.C.’s trio, enter with Adidas President Rupert Campbell, all wearing shell-toe superstars of course, the room suddenly feels small.

Nothing had prepared William Passano for a new technology introduced in 1960 that threatened to upend his medical publishing business: the Xerox 914 photocopier. The machine offered the ability to produce cheap and quick duplicates that allowed the government’s National Library of Medicine to mass photocopy articles from his company’s copyrighted medical journals. Passano eventually sued in a case that went up to the Supreme Court, which ultimately took a cautious approach to regulating the emerging technology by ruling in 1975 that it was fair use for libraries to photocopy the originals. The justices left Congress to address the novel intellectual property issues raised in the case, leading to key revisions in copyright law a year later.

Saturday Night Live is the show everyone thinks of when they think about sketch comedy. Though not the first and certainly not the last, SNL has been on NBC live since 1975. So it has dominated a lot of pop culture real estate. If you are looking for more sketch comedy with a different point of view, or just a different cast, here are 12 other options.

Let’s take a trip back in time to the early 1980s at the height of David Bowie’s popularity.
MTV launched in 1981 with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The first video played was The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Quite appropriate.
MTV stands for music television because that’s what it was. MTV played music videos all day, every day — 24 hours of videos.
The network brought artists into our homes for the first time. We no longer just listened to the music; we watched it. This helped launch some of the biggest names in music of the time. It turned artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Boy George, and Duran Duran into stars.
David Bowie had some of his biggest commercial successes during this time, partially because of MTV.

The American Genre Film Archive is responsible for this 4K theatrical re-release, and the company’s theatrical director Bret Berg had this to say about it: “It’s an honor to represent Carpenter’s legacy, given how much personal joy his work has created for us. When it’s something as iconic as Precinct 13 – akin to the heartstopping majesty of Halloween – we’re driven to get this taut masterwork in front of as many audiences as we can. Big thanks to the Ckk Corporation for shepherding this new restoration.”

Canberra (Australia), Dec 5 (Ians) The head of Football Australia (Fa) has said a decision will be made on Socceroos coach Graham Arnold’s future early in 2023.
Arnold’s contract officially expired when the Socceroos were beaten 2-1 by Argentina in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.
It means the 59-year-old, who has reportedly previously been offered jobs in Major League Soccer (Mls), is a free agent after four years in charge of the Australian national team.
The run in Qatar was the first time the Australian men have won multiple games at a World Cup and Craig Goodwin’s strike against Argentina was the Socceroos’ first goal in the knockout stage.
Despite the success, Fa chief executive James Johnson said the governing body would not rush to decide on Arnold’s future — with a final call subject to the findings of an in-depth review of the campaign, reports Xinhua.

In recent years, it's become a bit of a tradition to bring in comedian Dave Chappelle as the host of "Saturday Night Live" after there's been a major election. Chappelle hosted after Donald Trump became president in 2016 and delivered one of the best monologue's "SNL" has ever seen, then executive producer Lorne Michaels followed that up by bringing him back in 2020 after Joe Biden won the election. Now he's back in 2022 after the Republicans failed to execute their so-called "red wave." However, Chappelle didn't really spend his monologue time talking about the election. Instead, he focused almost entirely on the recent antisemitic controversy surrounding rapper Kanye West. But we'll get to that later.
What's interesting about this episode of "SNL" is that Chappelle spent over 15 minutes on the mainstage in Studio 8H doing stand-up bits. Whenever he has hosted, they pretty much get however much time they want after the...

Dave Chappelle is a Game of Thrones fan, and he’s also into the new show, House of the Dragon, though he has mixed feelings about the spinoff, he said while hosting Saturday Night Live.
“I gotta tell you, I love that they are including Black characters but, to be honest, the Black characters — they take me out a little bit,” he said mentioning the blonde hair and old-time accents of the show’s characters. “It’s a little jarring like where are these people from?”

Whenever Dave Chappelle hosts “Saturday Night Live”, he makes sure to give longtime fans a little treat by bringing back some iconic characters from his famed sketch comedy series “Chappelle’s Show”.
This time around, Chappelle once again introduced the segment (just like he used to do on his own show) and joked about how much he loved the “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon”, but that the show’s Black characters threw him for a loop.

HBO’s House of the Dragon took the note that its predecessor, Game of Thrones, had diversity issues. There are a lot more Black faces in the cast this time around. But for those who say that the show still isn’t Black enough, Dave Chappelle — who hosted Saturday Night Live this week — has you covered.
The sketch starts as a simple parody of HotD: Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen (Chloe Fineman and Michael Longfellow, respectively) point out the thing about everybody’s name sounding the same and the positively exhausting amount of incest in the show. Kenan Thompson enters as...

Original ‘Chappelle’s Show’ Characters Crossover With ‘House of the Dragon’ on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Tyrone Biggums, Rick James and Silky Johnson are now “Game of Thrones” canon. The original “Chappelle’s Show” characters were resurrected for a very special “House of the Dragon” sketch on “Saturday Night Live.”
Returning host Dave Chappelle brought back three characters from his sketch series, which ran from 2003 to 2006 on Comedy Central. Similar to his show, Chappelle re-appeared after his 15-minute opening monologue ridiculing Kanye West for his antisemitic comments, and gave this pre-recorded video a little set up.
“Anyone out here watching this new show, ‘House of the Dragon,'” Chappelle asked the crowd, mic in hand. “I am the biggest ‘Game of Thrones’ fan, I love their new show. And I got to tell you, I love that they’re including Black characters. But to be honest, the Black characters … they take me out of it a little bit. It’s that blonde hair and old timey accents.

Back from a commercial break, Dave Chappelle returned to the Saturday Night Live stage to address the audience and asked if they were watching House of the Dragon before introducing a spoof sneak peek of the HBO series – with some help from some of his Chappelle’s Show characters.
“I am the biggest Game of Thrones fan, I love the new show,” he said. “And I gotta tell you, I love that they are including Black characters but, to be honest, the Black characters — they take me out a little bit with the old time accents, it’s a little jarring like where are these people from.”
Chappelle then says that Lorne Michaels got a hold of an exclusive sneak peek of Season 2 of the show and introduced a previously recorded sketch.
Chappelle’s Show regulars Silky Johnson, Tyrone Biggums and Rick James all showed up alongside original cast member Donnell Rawlings.

Chicago – One of the most prominent Americans musicians in the 20th Century, if not one of the greatest, was Louis Armstrong. The memorable black trumpeter, vocalist and outsized personality found success in the Jim Crow era, and how he did it is spotlighted in Sacha Jenkin’s documentary “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in New Orleans in 1901, and was raised by his mother and grandmother in poverty. As the documentary reveals, his unlawful street activities landed him in a “colored waif’s” detention school, where he learned discipline and played in the band. After stepping out of school, he began to play on riverboats, and began to develop his signature style. He followed his mentor King Oliver to Chicago, where he did his first recordings and introduced himself to the wider world. His ascension in music, the movies and...

Since that time in his teens when he self-published the early ’90s graffiti art zine “Graphic Scenes & X-Plicit Language,” Sacha Jenkins has been about documenting hip-hop and funk culture — Black culture. Moving between print (he’s creative director at Mass Appeal), television (“Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men”) and film (“Bitchin’: The Sound and Fury of Rick James”), he’s documented the intricacies of African-American culture with dexterity and painstaking study.
Jenkins is also a musician, making the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong a fitting story for the director-writer-producer to tell. In “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues,” premiering today on Apple TV+, Jenkins documents the jazz trumpeter, vocal innovator and actor as a fire-starter for so much of what we hear now in Black music — rap included, thanks to Armstrong’s innovative rhythmic scatting – as well as being more of an activist than people realized where racism and...

"Super Freaky Girl" will compete in pop categories at the 2023 Grammy Awards, and Nicki Minaj is not happy about it. The artist submitted the song to the rap category, but the Recording Academy said the sampling of "Super Freak" by Rick James meant it's designated as pop. In a series of social media posts on Oct. 13, Minaj criticized the committee for "moving the goal post," pointing out the fact that this decision doesn't align with the way the award show has categorized songs in the past. The Recording Academy did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.
The rapper first retweeted a fan account that said, "Let's also talk about how 'Can't Touch This' by Mc Hammer (which also samples 'Super Freak' by Rick James) was nominated for Rap categories at the Grammys." Minaj added, "Unbelievable."
That same day, Minaj shared additional thoughts and scrutiny on Instagram. "If 'Super...

Nicki Minaj has accused the Grammy Awards of prioritising new artists, after her 2022 song “Super Freaky Girl” was moved from the rap category to the pop category.
The switch was revealed on Thursday (13 October) when the first-round ballot went out to Recording Academy voters.
The rapper and singer made her point on social media, explaining that she wouldn’t have been annoyed if she felt the same treatment applied to all genre-blending acts on the nominations list.
“I have no prob being moved out the Rap category as long as we r All being treated Fairly,” said the 39-year-old on Twitter.

Nicki Minaj has assembled a royal court of rappers for the new “Queen Mix” of her recent single, “Super Freaky Girl.”
The remix/epic posse cut features new verses from City Girls’ Jt, Bia, Katie Got Bandz, Akbar V, and Maliibu Miitch. Minaj also contributes a few new ad-libs to the song (like properly introducing Katie Got Bandz’s verse with her online moniker, “Ayo Drillary Clinton”), as well as a whole new verse of her own to close out the track.
Minaj originally released the Rick James-sampling “Super Freaky Girl” back in August.

A world-class outdoor venue inspired by ancient Roman designs is probably the last thing you’d expect to find in Huntsville, Alabama, but the city’s new Orion Amphitheater is all about exceeding expectations. Which actually makes perfect sense for a town that’s primarily known for sending rockets into outer space.

Nicki Minaj just released the new video for "Super Freaky Girl." Directed by Joseph Kahn, it features Minaj getting flirty at home with "Vikings" actor and "The Hunger Games" alum Alexander Ludwig and walking past Barbie doll neighbors before burning her house down in pink flames.
"Super Freaky Girl" marked Minaj's first solo release in three years. The track, which dropped on Aug. 12, uses a sample of Rick James's "Super Freak" to pay homage to the 1981 hit. "He want a F-r-e-a-k (freaky girl) / F-r-e-a-K (freaky girl)," Minaj raps in the hook.
Minaj previously released singles like "We Go Up" featuring Fivio Foreign and "Do We Have a Problem?" with Lil Baby this year, but there's still no word on when her new album will arrive. However, the rapper did previously announce she'll soon air a six-part self-titled docuseries about her life and career, though the Bron Studios-produced...

Motown founder Berry Gordy had a galaxy of star executives helping him build the company into the powerhouse it became, but not many of them shone as brightly as Suzanne de Passe.
Joining the company relatively late in its heyday, de Passe moved from her native Harlem to Detroit in 1968 and soon convinced a skeptical Berry to sign a group of kids calling themselves the Jackson 5. She quickly took charge of developing the group into the pop-culture juggernaut they immediately became — their first four singles went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — developing their live show, imaging, choreography, television appearances and much more. Her next signing? An R&b combo called the Commodores featuring a young singer named Lionel Richie.

After years of trying to funk his way to stardom, Rick James finally broke through in 1978 on the back of a pair of dynamite singles: “You and I,” an eight-minute dance-floor workout that includes a lovely, soaring falsetto kiss-off (“they all can go to hell”), and “Mary Jane,” the most hummable ode to weed this side of D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar.”

But it’s definitely going to show the power and the force that he came with earlier in his career, and will show how the singer’s words and attitude contributed to the world of music and the world around him.
