In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.
As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.
McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

Remember the first year of Russell T Davies reboot of Doctor Who? That season eased viewers back into the world of the Doctor, re-establishing a few classic villains such as the Daleks and the Autons, but also using the Time War as an excuse for avoiding references to the past.
Contrast that to the past few years, in which the show has no concerns with going back to previous adventures. Modern Doctors have met previous incarnations — sometimes in older form (as in the returns of Peter Davison and Tom Baker), sometimes recast (as in the case of David Bradley stepping in for William Hartnell), and sometimes in digital form (basically every other case). Classic villains have returned, not just the Master, the Daleks, or Cybermen, but even odd-balls like the Toymaker, whose one previous appearance can’t be watched in any form anymore. Most common, Doctor Who has brought back past companions,...

Doctor Who season 15 comes to Blu-ray, with Horror Of Fang Rock leading the six-story collection. More here.
Never mind the fact that the entirety of Doctor Who – well, save for an episode or two – is available to watch on the BBC’s iPlayer service. There’s also the not-so-small matter of Doctor Who physical media releases, which continue thanks to the genuinely brilliant line of Blu-ray sets.
Next in line? Some Tom Baker magic, thanks to series 15 of Doctor Who becoming the subject of the latest set. This one runs to seven discs, dating all the way back to 1977, and includes the following stories…
Horror Of Fang Rock
The Invisible Enemy
Image Of The Fendahl
The Sun Makers
Underworld
The Invasion Of Time
Tom Baker is accompanied by Louise Jameson’s Leela in these tales, and we also get the introduction of K9 in there too. Plus, of course, Horror...

Graham and Ryan have left Doctor Who, and it was sad/joyous/on telly (delete as applicable), but where do their departures rank on the all-time list?
The question of “Who counts as a companion?” is a tricky one. Overall it’s an ad hoc combination of different criteria, with allowances made for the exceptions that are intended to fulfil the companion role on a one-off basis. The ranking system is based on whether the departure makes sense for that character, how well it’s built up to, and what it says about Doctor Who in a larger sense. The article only covers TV stories because I value what remains of my sanity.
That’s all the exposition. Please enjoy this non-linear history of production compromises.

One of the most ambitious television dramas of the 1980s has found a new home on True Entertainment. It should also find a new audience there, as it has done continuously since its final Reunion special aired in 1985, bringing the four year run to a close. It began as something of a revelation to many, choosing to tell the stories of a group of women during the Second World War. With so many movies and television production telling and re-telling the stories centering around men during the war Tenko’s initial success proved that there were many more stories to tell.
The series starred Stephanie Beachem, Stephanie Cole and Doctor Who’s Louise Jameson, along with Jean Anderson, Patricia Lawrence and well known comedy actor Burt Kwowk as Major Yamauchi. It dramatised the stories of women prisoners of the Japanese, taken after the Fall of Singapore in 1942, and how their...

A salute to The Omega Factor, a seminal 1970s sci-fi TV series that paved the way for many more to follow...
One of the funny quirks about Scotland is that everyone can name a Scots actor, but very few can name famous Scottish TV shows. Beyond the standard native fare of cop shows and comedies, Scotland’s televisual output is well below its literary or film standing.
Of course, there’s Take The High Road (And if you get that reference, dear reader, you can mournfully reflect that you’re as old as me). But there are a few surprising gems beyond the cliched obsession with the Jacobites and Highland allure (ahem, Outlander).
In 1979, and all too briefly, The Omega Factor was BBC Scotland’s paranormal, Edinburgh-set drama. The series, as was so typical of (nearly) every show now considered iconic for the era, only ran for...

This article contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 10, up to and including Oxygen.
See related Vib-Ribbon to return?
Space zombies, near-death experiences and what we can only hope is a temporary change for the Doctor… In Oxygen, writer Jamie Mathieson has quite literally played a blinder. And for the more observant among us, there were a handful of pop culture references and callbacks to earlier stories. Here’s our weekly round-up of the ones we noticed, along with the odd bit of wild speculation and things we just found interesting.
Oh, and look out for an extra article on Monday which takes a closer look at a few bits of graphic design this series - including the answer to a question which has been plaguing some of us for a couple of weeks now.

Ground-breaking, intelligent, prescient 1970s drama Doomwatch, now out on DVD, is a British television classic...
Playing on the public's fear that 'this could actually happen', Doomwatch had a veneer of credibility unusual in the escapist television drama landscape of the late 60s/early 70s. This spring sees the most comprehensive haul of Doomwatch episodes released on DVD for the first time. The nickname for the "Department for the Observation and Measurement of Scientific Work", the series first appeared on BBC1 on Monday 9th February 1970 at 9.40pm. It followed half an hour of comedy from Kenneth Williams, which must have surely heightened its dramatic impact.
The series would run in tandem with the early Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who; the first episode made its debut two days after part two of Doctor Who And The Silurians. The two shows undoubtedly shared a synergy of ideas - not to mention cast and crew.

Tom Baker is to return as the Doctor for a set of BBC Radio 4 Extra audio dramas.
The six-part series, which was produced by Big Finish Productions and recorded in 2012, will be broadcast for the first time later this month.
Featuring a full voice cast, the first episode is titled 'Destination: Nerva', and sees the Doctor and Leela (played by Tenko's Louise Jameson) investigating an alien distress call that appears to be coming from Victorian England.
Their journey through time and space takes them to the newly built Space Dock Nerva, and sets in motion a homecoming that could put an end to the human race.
Nerva served as a location in the 1975 Doctor Who television episode 'Ark in Space', which inspired writer and director Nicholas Briggs to explore the setting further.

From the Queen Vic to the Tardis. As Eastenders prepares to mark its 30th anniversary, we look back at its encounters with Doctor Who...
Back in the mid-eighties an actor who played "Third Assistant" in a Doctor Who story called The Savages (1966) and the director of another Doctor Who adventure, The Underwater Menace (1967), came together to create one of the BBC’s most successful television shows.
And when they got together, it was murder. Well, not quite. (Though the first episode did feature a victim who would later die, fact fans.) But what they did create was Eastenders.
Broadcast on February the 19th 1985 (in between episodes one and two of The Two Doctors), this creation of Who alumni would go on to share numerous links with the long-running science-fiction for years to come. Even its time-slot owes much to the adventures of everyone’s favourite Gallifreyan.

Midsomer Murders Acorn Media/Rlj Entertainment
Fans all over the world instantly recognize actor John Nettles as the star of the hit ITV drama Midsomer Murders which is available in the U.S. through Acorn Media. However, as a kid growing up in England I also recall John as the face of another TV detective series — Bergerac. I was fortunate enough to catch up with him at the American Public Television Fall Marketplace. I begin by asking him about his time as Jim Bergerac and of course what it was like to drive that iconic car. As soon as I mention the burgundy 1947 Triumph Roadster John begins to laugh.
“That was probably the worst sports car ever built,” he chuckles.
“We filmed Bergerac on Jersey and the whole island is covered in narrow roads surrounded by hedges. It’s difficult enough to drive a normal car out there but that...

The Letter, about the early life of Tom Baker, is heading for production soon. Here are some details...
Comfortably one of the funniest autobiographies we've ever had the pleasure is Tom Baker's Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?, which we talked about in the Den Of Geek Book Club (which is a thing), right here.
Now, however, news has reached us, via The Digital Fix, that there's a one-off drama heading to our screens that tells the story of Tom Baker's early life. A casting call for a project called The Letter has appeared online, with the focus on "how a chance letter to the BBC when working as a builder's labourer lead to him becoming the most iconic Doctor Who".

The following roles, lists the casting call, are all required for a single day of filming. Given that contracts are on a "deferred profit share" basis and...

Nobody Can Cool is the rather impressive directorial debut from up-and-coming filmmaking duo Dpyx, Marcy Boyle and Rachel Holzman, who crafted a blisteringly taut and thoughtful indie crime thriller with a palpable sense of tension from start to finish. A gritty and engaging tale of deceit, violence and desperation, Nobody Can Cool is anchored by a breakout performance by Nick Principe (best known from his work in the Laid to Rest series, Madison County and...

The Tractate Middoth
Once upon a time, ghost stories were an integral part of the BBC’s Christmas line-up. Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) is attempting to revive that tradition and he took his first steps in that direction with tonight’s broadcast of M R James’ The Tractate Middoth.
I love a good ghost story but M R James isn’t really my cup of tea. That being said, Mark Gatiss did well to turn this short story into a fairly entertaining half-hour of TV. It always helps when you have a good cast and for The Tractate Middoth, Gatiss signed up some big-hitters. The cast included Sacha Dhawan (Outsourced), Louise Jameson (Doc Martin), John Castle (I, Claudius), Eleanor Bron (Ab Fab) and David Ryall (The Village). The aforementioned A-listers all put in a good shift but the show was fun rather than scary. It wasn’t exactly Randall and Hopkirk...

Doc Martin Season 6
The bride looks beautiful in her flowing white gown. The groom looks . . . prepared. What could possibly go wrong? Well a lot actually, after all we are talking about the long awaited wedding involving Martin and Louisa at the start of Doc Martin series six. The newly married duo go from being bombarded with confetti to being splattered in mud and feathers. Oh and did I mention the gun wielding nutcase who tries to hold them hostage? As Doc Martin succinctly put it “it’s not exactly the day you were hoping for.” Enough of the spoilers, you’ll have to watch it yourself if you want to see the rest and you can do just that on 10 December.

Regular followers are probably aware that we here are at Sound on Sight are more than a little fond of an obscure British science fiction program that celebrated an anniversary of some kind last weekend. Anniversaries are always an excellent time to reflect upon and celebrate a show’s history and the lead up to last Saturday’s “The Day of the Doctor” saw the entire Whoniverse coming together to share their thoughts on everything from their favourite episodes, most beloved eras, and of course, “their” Doctor. I just love that a top ten list can be the beginning of a good conversation or a great fight, and I find that the most heat, and some of the best light, is generated when Whovians start talking about their favourite Companions. A Companion is more than just our surrogate, they’re a gateway and guide to the series who helps us...

The Day of the Doctor
The 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor set a record yesterday as the largest ever simulcast TV event. The episode attracted a peak audience of over 10 million viewers in the UK. It was also simultaneously broadcast in 94 other countries including Russia, Peru and Ethiopia. Dedicated fans also had the opportunity to watch a 3-D version of the episode in one of the 1,500 hundred movie theaters that aired it.
The Day of the Doctor served to plug the canonical gap between the “classic show” and the current version of the sci-fi classic. John Hurt (I Claudius) was introduced as a dark version of the Doctor who committed genocide to end the Time War. With a little help from his later incarnations (David Tennant and Matt Smith), the Hurt version of the Timelord turned the clock back and rewrote history so the genocide was averted.

Every superhero has an origin story, but so does every TV show or movie about superheroes -- and those seldom involve outrageous powers, ancient gods or radioactive spiders.
In the case of the BBC's time-traveling-alien sci-fi drama "Doctor Who," which turns 50 years old tomorrow -- having premiered on Nov. 23, 1963, one day after the JFK assassination -- it involves a producer and a director viewed at the BBC as being about as out of place as a blue London police box on far distant planet.
Airing tonight, Friday, Nov. 22, on BBC America, "An Adventure in Space and Time" tells that origin story, starring Jessica Raine ("Call the Midwife") as producer Verity Lambert, a rare female in the overwhelmingly male BBC; and Sacha Dhawan ("Last Tango in Halifax") as director Waris Hussein, the first Indian hired as a series director at the Beeb.

Doc Martin Series 1 Joe Absolom Ian McNeicee. Acorn/RLJEntertainment.com
For fans of British TV, Ian McNeice and Joe Absolom are instantly recognizable as the father and son duo Bert and Al Large in the hit dramedy Doc Martin. The duo were recently in Boston for an event organized by American Public Television to publicize the show which is currently airing on Acorn TV. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to speak with Joe and Al about the Doc Martin.
Doc Martin is built around the idea that, Dr Ellingham is a fish out of water as a city slicker trying to adapt to life in the South-West. As actors, can you guys relate to his predicament when you leave London behind and head down to Port Isaac to start production?
Joe “We’ve been filming in Port Isaac for so long that we’ve become part of the tapestry of the town.

Leela
Portrayed by: Louise Jameson
Doctor(s): Fourth Doctor
Tenure: 9 stories (40 episodes), from The Face of Evil (Jan, 1977) to The Invasion of Time (March, 1978)
Background: Leela of the Sevateem is a warrior from a tribe of humans who have, over time, lost the technology that brought them to their planet in the first place.
Family/Friends: Leela has father who dies during her first story, taking her place in a trial. Other than this, we know little of her immediate family, but we do get a sense of her community, and why she leaves, from this story.
Personality: Leela is fierce, bold, and combative. She’s surprisingly flexible to life aboard the Tardis, given her background, and she bonds quickly with the Doctor, who takes it upon himself to sand down her rough edges. As a warrior, her initial instinct in any given situation is to quickly and permanently shut down threats.

It’s going to be Time Lord overload for the next couple of months. In addition to the 50th-anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor” and the making-of docudrama “An Adventure in Space and Time,” the Doctor is going to be all over the BBC. From the BBC’s Doctor Who site:
BBC Two will broadcast a number of new commissions, focusing on telling the story behind the show. For one night only, Professor Brian Cox will take an audience of celebrity guests and members of the public on a journey into the wonderful universe of the Doctor, from the lecture hall of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1x60mins). Drawing on the latest theories as well as 200 years of scientific discoveries and the genius of Einstein, Brian tries to answer the classic questions raised by the Doctor – can you really travel in time? Does extra-terrestrial life exist in our galaxy?...

In just over two months, the BBC will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who with a one-off special, Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor, and the anticipation has naturally been buzzing for months around the special event.
The 75-minute episode will air on BBC One, BBC America, and around the world on November 23rd, and commemorating fifty years of what has grown to become a cultural landmark, as Steven Moffat describes it in the broadcaster’s full press release below.
As the programme draws ever clear, a new poster has been revealed for The Day of the Doctor, along with a slew of programming around the episode to celebrate the milestone.
The episode will be the penultimate to star the current Doctor, Matt Smith, who will be exiting the programme with the Christmas episode. Peter Capaldi was announced last month as his replacement, coming on board...

Ghosts! Teen exorcists! Doctor Who! Platform games! Just some of the stuff on offer in this week's Crowdfunding Friday...
Every so often, a crowdfunding project seems to come along and take on a life of its own. That's certainly the case with Mighty No. 9, a side-scrolling platform game that managed, almost entirely thanks to enthusiastic word-of-mouth, managed to break through its $900,000 minimum goal within less than 48 hours. At the time of writing, its total stands at $1.6million and rapidly climbing.
It's when you look at who's behind the project that you realise what the fuss is all about: former Capcom artist and designer Keiji Inafune has assembled a phenomenally talented team of fellow videogame makers under the banner Comcept USA, and together, they're making what promises to be a spiritual follow-up to Mega Man.
Mega Man, of course, was the little blue bomber who's...
