Flix FlashbackWith Kamal’s upcoming ‘Vikram’, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, set to release in a few weeks, the author recalls the expectations and hype surrounding the release of the star’s ‘original’ 1986 film of the same name.Anand Kumar RSIMDBThere may not be frenzied requests for daily “updates” on social media like the kind we saw for Valimai but in terms of audience expectations Kamal Haasan’s upcoming Vikram is not far behind. And there are multiple reasons for this. Beyond the obvious reason of it being a Kamal starrer, the star teaming up with young and exciting director Lokesh Kanagaraj is another. A cast that also includes powerhouse performers like Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi is another. Ever since the project was titled Vikram, the name of another Kamal film that hit the big screens in the summer of 1986, the intrigue has only heightened. Just like the promos for the new Vikram have promised,...

Flix FlashbackFrom taking on 'injustice' in our personal lives to writing a college play based on the film, 'Nayagan' had a massive influence on young people.Anand Kumar Rsi remember the episode very well. Nayagan had just released for Deepavali in October 1987. There was no pre-release hype then as it is the case for new releases nowadays. However, the poster depicting a clean shaven Kamal with a bloodied nose intrigued us. To us, it was a “Kamal” film and in those days, we invariably caught up with all Kamal films. Three of us friends watched the film at Anand Theatre in Madras and after watching, we walked down the stairs. The usual quick post-mortem of a film after watching it was missing and the mood was sombre and reflective. There was an adrenaline rush inside among us with chests all pumped up. We got to the gate and...

Flix FlashbackThe scene where Sarada tries to measure Arr’s waist but can’t stop giggling has so much affection in it that it’s hard to think of another from Tamil cinema that is comparable. Sowmya RajendranThe ‘90s were a period of college romances in Tamil cinema. The big stars of the current generation – Vijay, Ajith, Suriya and Vikram – all debuted in various years of this decade. The stories revolved around misunderstandings between the hero and the heroine, familial opposition to their love and other circumstances that separated them. The films were youth-centric, made with peppy songs and dances that would bring the college-going, urban crowd to theatres. But right at the beginning of this decade, in 1990, there came a film that’s still considered to be one of the greatest romances in Tamil cinema and yet was markedly different from the films that would follow. In an unusual directorial debut,...

KollywoodThe film is a tangled mess of pseudo-activism that is presented with a terrible lack of understanding of gender and sexuality.Anjana ShekarEven though 2019 is still young, I make no mistake in saying Dha Dha 87 is one of the most misleading titles of the year. For one, the film is not on old people falling in love. The first night scene that was released on YouTube does not even find a place in the film’s runtime! Leave aside romance, it is not even about an 87-year-old don. The film, instead, is a tangled mess of pseudo-activism that is presented with a terrible lack of understanding of gender and sexuality. In one of its earliest scenes, a local rowdy, high on drugs, is shown sexually abusing a very young girl child and in the very next scene, we are taken to a local gang war triggered by caste. While we...

The film, which has been in the making for over 1.5 years, also stars 80-year-old Saroja, actor Keerthy Suresh’s grandmother, who is making her debut in this film along with actors Anand Kumar and Sri Pallavi. The film’s trailer shows Charuhasan as the ageing don Sathya, a ruthless killer, worse than Yama, the god of death. Upon a closer look, you notice the metal bracelet on his arm and a black thread around his neck, a distinct style from Kamal Haasan’s 1988 social drama Sathya. The film’s leads are also named Sathya and Geetha. So, is Charuhasan’s character a continuation of Kamal’s Sathya as reports suggest?...

KollywoodFrom Kongu to Singala Tamil, many actors have tried out different dialects on the big screen to make their character more convincing.Anjana ShekarIn Viswasam, actor Ajith played a village goon from Madurai. In Red (2002) too, he had played the role of a local don from Madurai. To sound more authentic this time, the actor tried speaking in the local dialect, inserting phrases like ‘injarule’ (a local exclamation for ‘won’t you look at this?’) to make a pronounced effect. Although not one hundred percent authentic, we’ve seen actors trying out new dialects time and again which would give more edge to their character. And most times, this becomes a unique aspect of the film that is extolled by the makers before its release. Here's a list of dialects we've seen on the big screen and the films in which they featured. 'Madras' Tamil This is one of the...

KollywoodThe Superstar became an overnight rage among the auto drivers of Tamil Nadu and his punch line, ‘Naa oru dhadavai sonna, nooru dhadavai sonna maadhri!’ was immortalised Digital NativeDigital NativeIn the year 1995, 23 years ago, Rajnikath's cult-classic Baasha was released for Pongal. Baasha was a trend-setter in the nineties which was the first of the many films that showed the hero in a ‘negative’ role. The film ran for 368 days grossing record collections and went on to become a massive hit. Directed by Suresh Krissna, who also delivered another classic hit Annamalai with the Super Star, Baasha has Rajini playing an auto driver with a deadly flashback. The movie is considered to have changed Rajinikanth's career and set the path for his defining style. The film was also instrumental in creating a market for Rajinikanth in Telugu and Hindi. The Superstar became an overnight rage among the auto drivers of Tamil Nadu and his punch line ‘Naa oru dhadavai sonna, nooru dhadavai sonna maadhri!’ was immortalised. It starred Nagma, Raghuvaran, Janagaraj and Vijayakumar in supporting roles. The digitally remastered version was released last year in 14 cinemas with 100 shows across Chennai and it had minted Rs 40 lakh on its opening weekend itself. On the other hand, Rajinikanth’s 2.0, has shaped up very well. Made on a lavish budget, the film is believed to feature over 11,000 computer graphic shots, making it the highest number for an Indian film. A sequel to Enthiran, the film has also stars Amy Jackson, Akshay Kumar and Sudhanshu Pandey in key roles. Kaala directed by Pa Ranjith, who has reunited with Rajinikanth after last year’s Kabali, features Thalaivar in the role of a slum lord turned gangster who fights for the rights of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai. Since the film has been mostly shot against the backdrop of Mumbai, the makers have simultaneously shot the film in Hindi.
