10. American Pastoral by Philip Roth
The first novel in Philip Roth’s American Trilogy, American Pastoral is a recollection of the life of one Seymour “Swede” Levov, a picture-perfect citizen. Levov’s peaceful upper-middle-class life in the post-war prosperity years was disrupted by the turmoil of the 1960s, with his daughter’s going terrorist delivering the biggest blow to him.
9. 1984 by George Orwell
The one dystopia to rule them all, 1984 was George Orwell’s final novel. It’s a cautionary tale about the dangers of personality cults, police states, and total surveillance; a story about a little man living in a world where truth and facts are manipulated to the point where these words don’t carry any meaning anymore.
8. Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West, Cormac McCarthy’s fifth novel, is stuck between being an anti-Western and the Great American Novel.

On October 28, Johnson died in what is deemed a “freak accident” after a skate cut his neck while he and his team were playing against the Sheffield Steelers.
The investigation into Johnson’s death reportedly began “immediately following [the] tragedy,” according to Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall.
“Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world,” Horsfall said. “We know these communities will expect us to handle this investigation with the same professionalism, fairness and sensitivity as any...

Randy Fullmer, a veteran Walt Disney Animation Studios animator and producer who worked on “The Little Mermaid” and “Chicken Little,” died of cancer on July 10. He was 73. Walt Disney Animation confirmed the news in a statement to Variety.
“Most people are good at one thing in their lives. Randy was good at a lot of things,” wrote Don Hahn, whom Fullmer worked with on “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King.” “He could draw and paint beautifully, but he had the mind of an engineer, and the heart of an artisan. He was great at animation; great at producing movies, too. He was at the very center of the Disney renaissance in animation, then when he needed a new chapter in his life, he started making exquisite and much sought-after bass guitars with that same engineer’s mind and artistic soul he brought to Disney animated movies. Also known as Unhinged, Hypnotica is the feature debut from writer/director A.T. Sharma. His film begins in curious fashion, as on-screen text reads “Based on actual case studies,” before various scenes depict an unseen man’s journey to committing suicide. These events weigh heavily on junior psychiatrist, Mason (Tim Torre), who worries his sessions are not aiding his patient, Oliver (Adam Johnson). Uncertain of how else he can help, the psychiatrist turns to hypnotism to unlock his patient’s repressed memories, with each passing session uncovering more revelations which send the pair down dark paths.
More than just a plot device for what unfolds, Oliver yearns for help so he can return to his business and spend time with his daughters. His missing memories leave him as an enigma that intrigues Mason,...

Last year, we saw a list of thirteen movies that would be riffed during the new season of the classic series Mystery Science Theater 3000, which is now being released through the show’s own indie streaming platform The Gizmoplex. On that list was a movie called The Christmas Dragon, which was said to be about “a group of orphans going on a journey to restore the lost magic and save Christmas.” What wasn’t mentioned at that time is that original MST3K host Joel Hodgson will be returning to riff The Christmas Dragon with current hosts Jonah Ray and Emily Marsh!
The Christmas Dragon episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be reaching the Gizmoplex on December 16th. The livestream premiere begins at 8pm Eastern. Here’s the information:

The CW is parting ways with one of its summer series.
According to TV Line, The Outpost has been canceled after four seasons.
The last-ever episode is currently set to air on the network Thursday, October 7 at 9/8c.
Like many CW series, the on-air ratings have sagged considerably.
The show returned in July to 450,000 viewers and a 0.05 rating, and it has been staying around those numbers since.
As a co-production, the series was thought to have lasted this long because co-productions are typically cheaper to produce because of the different outlets involved.
The series “follows Talon, the lone survivor of a race called Blackbloods. Years after her entire village was destroyed by a gang of brutal mercenaries, Talon travels to a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world, as she tracks the killers of her family," according to the official logline.

Histrionic 1966 picture about a struggling musician has worthy ambitions but is deeply unhip
Time has not lent much to this histrionically earnest issue picture starring Sammy Davis Jr from 1966, in which the life of a troubled African American jazz hepcat is quaintly imagined by the husband-and-wife screenwriting team of Lester and Tina Pine; the director is industry stalwart Leo Penn (father of Sean), who had been blacklisted in his former career as an actor after refusing to testify to the red-baiting Huac. Well, the film certainly challenges the all-white consensus, and a supporting cast including Cicely Tyson and no less a figure than Louis Armstrong gives it substance.
Davis plays Adam Johnson, a brilliant but mercurial jazz musician and singer, facing casual racism from the cops and stricken with depression and alcoholism after a car crash killed his wife and child and blinded one of his own musicians. His wild...

Months before the 2016 presidential election, Alternet writer Adam Johnson used the term “copraganda” to describe any media story that “that uncritically advances a police department’s image or helps undermine reform efforts.” The same label can be applied to the way film and television have carefully sculpted the way we view law enforcement for nearly a century. Rookie cops, hero cops, crooked cops, buddy cops, supernatural cops, even a series devoted to a “Maniac Cop.” Filmmakers like David Ayer have practically built careers out of rehashing the “dirty cop” story in films like “Training Day” and “End of Watch.” Networks have flooded our TV screens for decades with stories like “Dragnet,” “Law & Order,” NYPD Blue,” “C.S.I.,” and enough spin-offs, reboots, and copycats to fill its own streaming channel.

If there’s a worse idea than the Pentagon becoming Editor-in-Chief of America, I can’t remember it. But we’re getting there:
From Bloomberg over Labor Day weekend:
Fake news and social media posts are such a threat to U.S. security that the Defense Department is launching a project to repel “large-scale, automated disinformation attacks,” as the top Republican in Congress blocks efforts to protect the integrity of elections.
One of the Pentagon’s most secretive agencies, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa), is developing “custom software...

"How long are you going to keep protecting them, Sam?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for a western titled Out of Liberty, which hasn't played at any film festivals but is opening in a few select theaters starting this September. Set in winter in 1839 in the town of Liberty, Missouri (now a suburb of Kansas City), the film is about a local jailer who is tasked with watching Missouri's most wanted men as they await their upcoming hearing. Caught between the local Missourians' increased effort to remove the prisoners, and the prisoners' desperate efforts to survive, Sam Tillery is pushed beyond what any lawman can endure. The full cast includes Jasen Wade, Brandon Ray Olive, Corbin Allred, Adam Johnson, Larry Bagby, Shawn Stevens, Jake Van Wagoner, and Brock Roberts. It's described as an "intense, evocative western, with an outcome you have to see to believe." This seems like a solid thriller.

The headline in the New York Times reads: “Sanders and Warren Meet and Agree: They Both Are Probably Running.”
At first, the story about Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont reads like standard election news. Over the past few weeks, multiple outlets have published negative pieces about Warren in particular, deploying coverage gimmicks used to disparage candidates early in presidential campaigns before.

Thursday, from Al Jazeera: “Yemen ‘on Brink of New Cholera Epidemic,’ Charity Warns.” The piece details how recent developments in the Yemeni civil war — specifically, the possible siege of the port city of Hodeidah — may cause a surge in cholera cases. There were over a million reported cases of cholera between the fall of 2016 and spring of 2018, the largest documented outbreak in modern times. The rate of infection had slowed, but observers now fear resurgence.

As SXSW 2013 was coming to a close, I received an email inviting me to a last-minute sneak peek at the new horror comedy film Vamp U. The only name I recognized on the cast list was Gary Cole, but I decided to give it a shot.
Vamp U follows a handsome, likeable history professor named Wayne Gretzky (Adam Johnson) who, in addition to looking good in scarves, is a centuries-old vampire. His enthusiastic student Tom (Matt Mattson) serves as the exposition fairy to tell us in the prologue that 300 years ago, Wayne fell in love with a beautiful human girl named Mary (Julie Gonzalo) but accidentally killed her in a passionate embrace. After that night, he realized that his fangs would no longer grow, forcing him to feed on...

My theory that Park Rangers derive their powers from their moustaches was proved right when I caught Orcs! over the weekend. You might have thought they get them from their excessive slacking, pot smoking or even their ability to keep cashew crumbs off their boxer shorts, but no - it's all about the moustache, baby.
Orcs! is a low budget horror/comedy about Orcs that come down from their mountain home and terrorize a Nationl Park. The film aims for the funny bone before the juggular and while it won't have you rolling on the floor, it at least has what it takes to make you consistently crack a smile. This is due in huge part to the pairing of Park Rangers Cal played by Adam Johnson...

I submit to you Limptooth , the latest comedy to draw inspiration from the undying vampire craze. It took two directors to pull this one off: Matt Jespersen and Maclain Nelson and they wrangled in Gary Cole ( Office Space ) for a bit part. The rest of the film rests on the shoulders of leading man Adam Johnson. The film is being sold under the title Limptooth , but there are multiple IMDb titles the film is listed under: Dr. Limptooth and Immortality Bites . How about none of the above? Wayne Gretzky (no relation) is a vampire who can't grow his teeth. His impotence began when he inadvertently killed Mary Lipinsky, the love of his life, 300 years ago. Cornfields are always a terrible place to be in a horror film. Once the sun goes down, it goes from a fixture of American agriculture to a scene of horror haunted by deranged pagan children, murderous scarecrows come to life, or, as in the case of the October DVD release The Maze, a corn maze becomes the perfect stalking grounds for a psychopathic slasher.
Monarch Entertainment will release The Maze to DVD on October 19th just in time for Halloween.
