Re-Animator
Blu-ray
Arrow
1985 / 1:85 / Street Date August 8, 2017
Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton
Cinematography: Mac Ahlberg
Film Editor: Lee Percy
Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, William Norris
Produced by Brian Yuzna
Music: Richard Band
Directed by Stuart Gordon
Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.
Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

Welcome to the latest edition of our regular crowdfunding feature here on Nerdly – Back This! – where we take a look at some of the cool content taking the crowdfunding route on sites such as Indiegogo, Sponsume and Kickstarter. This month we’re spotlighting two very different projects, yet two projects which share a common theme: movies.
The Viper’S Hex
The Viper’s Hex is a feature length Japanese horror film set in Tokyo. The film sets out to explore the psyche of Kiyo, a cursed and lonely hostess who falls pregnant to a foreigner named Anchin. The story is loosely based on the 11th century Yokai folklore tale named Kiyohime. It will be the fourth feature film by Black Forest Films – the teams behind Chocolate, Strawberry Vanilla, Under A Kaleidoscope, Lowlife Love, Mondo Yakuza and The Perfect Nonsense.
Kiyo, a cursed and lonely hostess is shunned by society. She...

It seems that Nightbreed has always captured the imagination of horror movie fans. And with good reason...
When the push began for Nightbreed, Clive Barker’s follow up to the cult hit Hellraiser in 1990, the marketing made the film feel like just another slasher film. The confusing advertisements couldn’t seem to decide whether the film’s killer was a button-eyed, masked killer, or the film’s lead character Boone - played by Craig Sheffer - leaving fans scratching their collective heads over what this coming horror joint was even about.

The theatrical posters for Nightbreed read “Lori thought she knew everything about her boyfriend….Lori was wrong!” and the tagline couldn't have missed the point of Nightbreed more if it tried. The film was a meditation on monsters and fringe dwellers,...

[Editors Note: With Army of Frankensteins finally out on DVD here in the UK on Monday, here's a repost of our review of the Us release of the film from back in July]
After a failed attempt to propose to his girlfriend, Alan Jones is beaten to within an inch of his life by a street gang and taken to a mysterious lab where Dr. Tanner Finski and his kid genius assistant perform horrible experiments on him hoping to re-animate a Frankenstein. The experiments lead to a hole being ripped in space and time, manifesting an Army of Frankensteins from hundreds of parallel universes and sending them all back to the 19th century, directly into the heart of a bloody battle between the North and South. History will never be the same.

Ok, so the events of two nights before are finally coming into focus (see previous entry here). I’m referring to the infamous Karoke party initiated by the Film Festival Mafia and spearheaded by Austin Fantastic Fest’s Tim League and NY Asian fest programmer Mark Walkow, neither of whom had any reservations about getting on stage and belting out a few tunes, even sober. For me, it takes a few of those fishbowl-size drinks before I muster the courage to give the B-52’s “Love Shack” a try. I was going to keep these drunken revelries to myself, but once an incriminating photo of me turned up in the daily Sitges festival newspaper a day later, and various celebrants had secretly videotaped the sordid affair, I had no choice but to come clean. Now I know how David Letterman felt last week.
I do learn a few things that night,...
