Regardless of whether it's an action flick or a horror movie, sacrifices will always elevate the dramatic charge of a story. There's no better way to illustrate a character's redemption than with their willingness to give their life to save others. However, sacrifices aren't always related to brave causes: quite often, they are more about a character coming to terms with their own mortality rather than a touching decision to save other people's lives.
In A Quiet Place, Lee Abbott yells at the top of his lungs to prevent creatures that hunt by sound from preying on his family. In Terminator 2: Judgment Day, T-800, a cyborg, gives his life so humanity can continue to fight for the right causes. These are all unforgettable sacrifices in movies, but there are plenty of underrated choices that stand out as the most impactful moments of these stories.

Sony has not successfully utilized all of Spider-Man's villains, wasting some, like Black Cat. Black Cat appeared twice in Sony movies, but wasn't done full justice as a character in either of them. Black Cat's complex dynamic with Spider-Man is best suited for the MCU, where her stories can be fully explored.
Sony has a large catalog of Spider-Man villains they can use, but the studio hasn't done justice to one villain who it has wasted twice. Spider-Man's foes are some of the best in Marvel's history, both in the comics and in the franchise's on-screen history. Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin stole the show in Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus proved to be a complex, tragic villain in Spider-Man 2. The MCU timeline has also done right by Spider-Man's enemies, with Michael Keaton's Vulture and Jake Gyllenhaals' Mysterio being excellent rivals...

The Yevetha, a dangerous villain faction from Star Wars Legends, could return in canon. The ruthless and violent Yevetha were more brutal than the Empire, showing no mercy. Star Wars may introduce the Yevetha in future media, expanding beyond the Empire and Sith threats.
Star Wars stories continually feature the Galactic Empire or one of its offshoots as the main villains, and while they are terrifying, another threat was set up in secret nearly eight years ago. The Empire made a big impression as an Imperial Star Destroyer filled the screen at the start of A New Hope, perfectly introducing the ultimate villains who would challenge the heroes in the original trilogy. The following Star Wars trilogies continued to expand the threat posed by the Empire, chronicling its creation in the prequels and its successor state, the First Order, in the sequels.

This Jyn Erso cosplay captures character's spirit, with the costume made by simcosplay.official for Kate Gray on Instagram. Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones in Rogue One, was pivotal in the victory of the Rebel Alliance leading into A New Hope, a spirit this cosplay reflects. Jyn could return to Star Wars in a movie about Jyn's time with her adoptive father, Saw Gerrera, which could explore her rebel spirit even more.
One beautiful Jyn Erso cosplay looks like it could've jumped right out of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Jyn Erso only appeared in one Star Wars movie before her tragic death, but she's one of the most important characters in the franchise's history. She was responsible for inspiring a group of rebels to go against orders to get the Death Star schematics. After the Rebel Alliance deemed the mission too dangerous, Jyn and her band of...

Corbet, who sits on the Berlinale jury, penned the film with Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), a Norwegian filmmaker who is also his wife. The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. Gareth Edwards' 2016 flick "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" told the story of how the Rebel Alliance in "Star Wars" came into possession of the Death Star blueprints the Rebels used as their central guide for its destruction. Audiences were told that "Many Bothans died to bring us this information," although none of those Bothans appeared in "Rogue One". Instead, Edwards' film focused on a loose-knit group of rebels who defied the plans of the Rebellion -- they went rogue -- in order to obtain the blueprints. The group was led by a young woman named Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), the daughter of one of the Death Star's architects.
The characters weren't terribly interesting, the dialogue was clunky at best, and the bland story was a frustratingly foregone conclusion -- the end scenes of "Rogue One" link directly to the first scenes of "Star Wars" -- but Edwards' film accrued...

Unexpected deaths in movies challenge audience expectations and create a lasting impact by deviating from conventional storytelling. Movies that kill off main characters in genres outside of horror and war can be even more surprising and emotionally impactful. These films break the rules and defy the idea of indestructible movie heroes, leaving audiences shocked and jolted by the protagonist's mortality.
Most movies are usually reluctant to kill off their main characters, but some films wipe out almost every character at the end. Some genres are more likely than others to have high kill counts. Horror movies and war movies are especially prepared to kill off central characters. However, there are many examples of films in other genres doing the same. In these cases, it's more unexpected and surprising when the main characters don't survive to the end, so it can have a more profound emotional impact.

Austen's novels have stood the test of time and continue to be popular today, with numerous film and TV adaptations. Movie adaptations of Austen's work vary in their faithfulness to the original plot, but the best ones capture the timeless elements and add a new perspective. The movie adaptations highlighted in the article showcase the comedic wit, social satire, and romantic allure of Austen's novels.
Jane Austen only completed six novels in her lifetime, but they have remained popular for centuries, and been adapted into dozens of movies and TV shows. Austen spent her entire life in England, and her novels comment upon the British aristocracy that she saw all around her. Although she wasn't afforded the same freedoms as men, she painted the world which she knew in captivating detail, and her novels wove in subtle critiques of the structural misogyny of the time. “[The Force Awakens] was like the beginning of the whole thing, and it was terrifying and incredibly rewarding,” Ridley once said according to the Daily Mail. “I felt like I pushed myself beyond boundaries I thought I had. Now I feel more together and present.

Rogue One sets the best precedent for incorporating cameos and fan service in Star Wars media by balancing them with the main story. The movie includes notable characters in the background without overshadowing the story, giving a rewarding experience to die-hard fans. Other Star Wars projects should follow Rogue One's example of organic integration of familiar elements while maintaining their own unique stories.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has laid out the best pattern for incorporating cameos and fan service into Star Wars media. Rogue One is arguably one of Star Wars' best movies to date in terms of both writing and storytelling. It answered two decades-long questions - how Leia acquired the information that led to the destruction of the Death Star, and why the Death Star contained such an obvious design flaw - concisely and believably. “May December,” the newest acclaimed drama film from Todd Haynes, is now available to stream on Netflix, and one of the film’s stars, Julianne Moore, is already an early favorite to receive a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her spellbinding performance. Let’s look back at her five Academy Award races and talk about why Moore finally won her first gold trophy in 2015 for “Still Alice” (2014).
Her first Oscar nomination came in 1998 in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Boogie Nights” (1997). Moore’s only Academy Award nom of the 1990s put her up against Joan Cusack for “In & Out,” Minnie Driver for “Good Will Hunting,” Gloria Stuart for “Titanic” and Kim Basinger for “L.A. Doctor Who is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. Since it first started airing way back in 1963, the show has become a British institution on par with the likes of The Beatles and the royal family themselves. Its popularity has also led to the role of The Doctor — the time-traveling alien from the planet Gallifrey and the show's main character — becoming one of the most desired TV roles for actors in the UK and, indeed, around the world. Similarly to the James Bond franchise, whenever the actor that is playing The Doctor announces they are leaving the series, fans and casual viewers alike all stop to see who will be next to take on the prestigious role. Movies like The Hunger Games, such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, feature rebellious heroes fighting against powerful empires. The Hunt is a satirical horror film that mirrors The Hunger Games' themes of social divide and political commentary. Ready Player One, like The Hunger Games, explores a dystopian future where young heroes must engage in high-stakes games to escape poverty and find purpose.
Movies like The Hunger Games cross a variety of genres, and aren't limited to just sci-fi and fantasy films aimed at young adults — though all of them channel the same core themes of rebellion and defiance as Katniss Everdeen's story. The Da Vinci Code series, based on Dan Brown's bestselling novels, received mixed reviews but became a huge commercial success, grossing over $750 million worldwide. Angels & Demons, the first novel in the series, was reworked as a sequel to The Da Vinci Code due to its success. It received better reviews compared to the third movie, Inferno. The future of The Da Vinci Code series is uncertain after the TV adaptation of The Lost Symbol was canceled after one season due to declining ratings and negative reviews.

The streaming service Netflix remains one of the most popular streaming services on the planet, with millions of subscribers exploring its constantly expanding library. Every year, the service churns out many original new shows and movies to entertain at-home audiences.
However, Netflix does not have the greatest track record for creating blockbusters. These movies want to be something special with their compelling concepts, but they fail to make an impact and ultimately become forgotten. Bright, Day Shift, and The Gray Man are just a few examples of promising Netflix original movies with underwhelming execution of their ideas.

There's no doubt about it: Ncuti Gatwa is having a bit of a moment. 2023 has been a big year for the Rwandan–Scottish actor, with the final season of his breakout hit show "Sex Education" hitting the airwaves right after he appeared alongside A-listers as one of the Kens in "Barbie." Now, he's well on his way to leading-man status, including an upcoming stint as one of the UK's most famous characters. Although his onscreen career is just getting started, he's already starred in a few very recognizable TV shows and movies. Here's everywhere you can catch him so far - and where he'll be appearing next.

Elvis isn’t dead. In fact, he’s very much alive and well after Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” starring Austin Butler and, now, Sofia Coppola‘s “Priscilla,” featuring Jacob Elordi as The King.
However, as you can guess by the latter movie’s title, Coppola’s focus isn’t on Elvis but rather on the singer’s wife Priscilla, whom he was married to from 1967 until 1973. Coppola’s slow, purposeful drama puts the young Priscilla front and center and explores her complex relationship with Elvis — a relationship fraught with passion, power, power imbalance, and, frankly, abuse. The film from A24 lives and dies by its female lead and, thankfully, Cailee Spaeny soars in a breakout role as the titular Priscilla. And critics agree.
Marlow Stern (Rolling Stone) noted: “Spaeny, who is 25 but makes for a convincing teenager, is an absolute marvel, nailing Priscilla’s complicated mélange of emotions — the wide-eyed wonderment and youthful desire,...

George Lucas praised Gareth Edwards' work on Rogue One, calling it one of the best Star Wars films ever, which was a surreal and exciting moment for the director. Rogue One, unlike other recent Star Wars films, was well-received by fans and even managed to impress George Lucas himself with its different and unique story. Gareth Edwards has returned to science fiction with his new film The Creator, which explores a universe where artificial intelligence poses a major threat, showcasing his ability to create visually impressive stories outside of the Star Wars franchise.
The Creator director Gareth Edwards remembers the moment George Lucas called him on the phone, praising the work he had done with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, considered one of the best films of the entire space saga. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Gareth Edwards recently addressed widespread rumors that co-screenwriter (and future Andor showrunner) Tony Gilroy took control of the spinoff during reshoots.
Edwards neither confirmed nor denied that Lucasfilm handed the project to Gilroy after principal photography wrapped in an interview with Variety. "Look, the only thing I can say is I was incredibly lucky," he said. "I got to make a Star Wars film. I won the lottery, in that sense. The idea of someone as privileged as me in any way implying that it was anything other than the amazing experience that it was to some extent -- like, I don't have any empathy for that person, and I don't want to be that person either."

London, 1975. If you thought your life had its fair share of troubles, imagine what the folks who lived during the 30-year ordeal known formally as The Troubles dealt with on a daily basis. Paranoia, threats of violence, spies everywhere — this is the setting of Dead Shot, which is now in theaters and on demand. Co-starring Aml Ameen and Colin Morgan with acclaimed actors Mark Strong and Felicity Huffman, the new political thriller from brothers Charles and Thomas Guard has its moments, despite the fact that a number of characters and subplots run a bit thin.
However, the dual protagonists, familiar faces, unique setting, and occasional gripping action sequences make it worth tuning in for.

Paranoia, retro cars, Ira threats galore. This is London in the 1970s, and the setting for a new period piece film by brothers Charles and Thomas Guard. Their film, Dead Shot — the title deriving from a quote from the character played by Mark Strong — hits theaters and on demand this week and is worth a tune-in for the production value, supporting performances by Felicity Jones and other recognizable faces, and more. The story starts with a border ambush gone wrong, leading a young widower (Colin Morgan) to venture into London to seek revenge with the help of the Ira.
We recently caught up with the Guard brothers, who opened up about working with Mark Strong and achieving the '70s London look on an indie budget. It's exciting to see real-life brothers team up for fun projects like Dead Shot, which has plenty of behind-the-scenes factoids worth mentioning thanks to our recent sitdown with them.

After Netflix released the first trailer for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” a biographical romance about Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre, many viewers took issue with Cooper’s large prosthetic nose, deeming it the latest example of Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people, known as “Jewface.”
But in a statement posted to Bernstein’s Twitter account, the late conductor’s children defended Cooper’s decision to “use makeup to amplify his resemblance” to their father. Cooper directed “Maestro” and stars as Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as Montealegre.
“Bradley Cooper included the three of us along every step of his amazing journey as he made his film about our father,” wrote Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein. “We were touched to the core to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the sheer open-hearted joy he brought to his exploration.

Dead Shot is a gripping cat-and-mouse thriller centered around a British sergeant who becomes the target of a revenge-driven Ira member after killing his pregnant wife. The movie is a throwback to crime thrillers of the past and features an ensemble cast including Aml Ameen, Colin Morgan, and Felicity Jones. Directors Tom and Charles Guard aimed to capture the intensity and visual language of films like Heat and The French Connection while incorporating contemporary themes like Brexit and Covid.

The movie centers on a British sergeant who is recruited to join a clandestine team to bring down Provisional Irish Republican Army sects in the U.K. after stopping a member from crossing the border, then becomes the target of said figure after having killed his pregnant wife during the confrontation.

For me, 2020 was already a rather stressful year before the Covid lockdowns went into effect for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Even as misfortunes both personal and professional piled up throughout the months that followed, the virus, funnily enough, was never directly to blame for my woes. Not that I can really complain; I certainly had a far easier go of it in 2020 than other people, especially when it came to my mental health. My years of working remotely and being a borderline hermit were finally paying off!
You could say my experience was a bit like George Clooney's in "The Midnight Sky." Clooney, who also directed the 2020 film, stars as Augustine Lofthouse, a scientist, and the lone person holed up at an Arctic research station that's been evacuated in the wake of a mysterious global catastrophe that's left most of the Earth's surface uninhabitable in the year 2049. May the Force be with… Emmy voters? Disney Plus amassed an impressive 40 Emmy nominations this year (up from 34 last year) thanks to its stable of “Star Wars” saga hits, which accounted for more than half of the mouse house’s total haul of 23 bids — nine for “The Mandalorian,” eight for “Andor,” five for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and one for docuseries “Light & Magic.”

Compared to films where the protagonist survives, the most incredible war movies that killed the hero examine heroism and mortality from a decidedly different angle. The death of a hero only gives more meaning to their life, and historically, true heroism and death are often inseprable. On the other hand, any death is already tragic, but death is especially heavy when it happens to the hero whom viewers hoped would survive.
From the most historically accurate war movies to highly dramatized and entirely fictional cinematic portrayals of war, there's no shortage of incredible war movies that killed the hero. Typically, war films where the hero dies result in the said sacrifices enabling a greater purpose, allowing the slain heroes to live beyond their natural lives. There are also war movies that kill the protagonist in the darkest of circumstances, a common plot device among films with overarching anti-war themes and messages.

Andor star Diego Luna recalled his casting experience for Gareth Edwards' 2016 prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, revealing that he was initially apprehensive about taking on the role of Cassian Andor.
Speaking with fellow Star Wars alum Hayden Christensen during Variety's Actors on Actors, Luna shared that it was a surreal moment when Edwards first pitched the project to him. However, the filmmaker convinced Luna to audition for Cassian Andor by citing the actor's performance in Alfonso Cuarón's acclaimed 2001 film Y tu mamá también as the reason why he'd be perfect for the Rogue One role.

Rogue One and The Theory of Everything actress Felicity Jones is getting behind the wheel for One, a Formula 1 family drama series from Bedrock Entertainment, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby. The project is a first for the Formula 1 organization, which has never hit the track for a scripted series. Jones will star in and produce, with Fergus and Ostby writing the script.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, One focuses on “the tumultuous ascension of a fictitious family-owned Formula 1 team as it contends with fierce personalities, ever-changing rivals, and multi-million-dollar stakes. It will blend fiction with the real-world of F1, which has 23 races scheduled for the 2023 season.”
Writing for the series is delayed because of the writers’ strike. However, once the details of the ongoing battle for representation, fair pay, and better work conditions, among other things, are concluded, Fergus and Ostby will put the pedal to the metal on scripting the series.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-writer Tony Gilroy says franchise creator George Lucas absolutely loved the Star Wars anthology film.
Deadline recently interviewed Gilroy, who's now the creator and showrunner of Rogue One's Disney+ spinoff/prequel series, Andor. Gilroy revealed that shortly after Rogue One hit theaters in 2016, he received a call from the legendary Star Wars creator. "George Lucas called me after Rogue, I had a 45-minute conversation with him after he saw Rogue, and that's the only time I've ever spoken to him," Gilroy said. "He loved it. He really did.
