Just how many giant spider movies will we get before filmmakers realise that None will beat 2000s Spiders, directed by Gary Jones (Mosquito) and starring Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time’s Evil Queen), which had a sequel in 2001… This week’s contender for the spider-movie crown is the Italian monster-movie Arachnicide, a title which connotes a much greater movie than this film actually is!
Yes this latest giant spider movie is an Italian horror film, however don’t expect Fulci levels of spider-based gore, this one is sadly a made-for-tv affair directed by Paolo Bertola, who has been working steadily away producing TV movies in Italy for some years. However only his 2011 film My Lai Four has made it to these shores previously, released by Scanbox (remember them?) back in 2011 as Massacre at My Lai Four.

How many “Spiders” films are there now on DVD? There’s my favourite: 2000s Spiders, directed by Gary Jones (Mosquito) and starring Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time’s Evil Queen), which had a sequel in 2001. Then there’s Spiders 3D. Originally released in 3D in 2013, the film dropped the “3D” from its title when it hit DVD the same year (though the 3D blu-ray didn’t)… And now comes Spiders, a retitling of an Italian monster-movie originally called Arachnicide – a much cooler title, yet one I’m guessing was too highbrow from the plebians that UK supermarkets think their “audiences” are…

I love a good (or so bad its good) monster movie – as you can probably tell by the number of them I’ve reviewed here at Nerdly. So when a new one comes along I’m always excited to see what “delights” they will bring. Will they do something original? Or be completely off the wall? Recently the monster movie has seen a resurgence of the “nature gone wild” format – in particular the killer shark movie. But sharks are not only mans greatest enemy, well not if low-budget horror and sci-fi are to be believed, we also have to fear spiders… Giant spiders!

Symphonic gothic horror musicians Midnight Syndicate have just released the Axe Giant The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album, produced by Midnight Syndicate, features highlights from the movie score composed by Edward Douglas along with The Ballad of Paul Bunyan performed by Hick’Ry Hawkins.
“From a simple flourish of strings to behemoth bass horns on the rampage, the score is everything I hoped it would be and more,” said director and co-writer Gary Jones. “The perfect marriage of sight and sound, Ed’s music carries our film into that cool, cool realm of which filmmakers only dream.”
“Gary wanted the film to have a feel similar to classic monster movies like King Kong. I found myself trying to channel my inner (Max) Steiner and (Bernard) Herrmann, in an effort to achieve that big, dramatic, classical sound,” said composer Edward Douglas. “The monster in the film is American folklore legend,...

Going into a film called Axe Giant: The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan it really is hard to know what to expect or what sort of film it is. As I went in without knowing anything, I was surprised to find a fun and watchable film. I kind of know a little about Paul Bunyan, a lumberjack legend and I’ve seen pictures so I had that kind of image in mind. This film however takes that legend and adds a spin to it, a pretty good idea to make this its own thing.
Storywise, sure this isn’t wholly original; a group of young adults (first time offenders in boot camp) go off camping as part of a program. Things aren’t what they expected as something is lurking in the woods … I think you know the rest.
What makes this work is the legend itself,...

He's not your grandfather's Paul Bunyan, the powerful, cheerful lumberjack clearing fields to help build America. No, he's 15 feet and half a ton of brutality and he's on the loose in Axe Giant: The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan. The award-winning creature feature slashes its way onto DVD from Virgil Films on June 18, 2013.
Veteran horror film writer/producer/director Gary Jones (Boogeyman 3, Ghouls, Spiders) and writer/producer Jeff Miller (Hellblock 13, Ballistica) turn one of North America's legendary heroes into a monster who lets trees stand but has a thing about young people running around his forest. Axe Giant: The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan is a contemporary take on the tall tale of lumberjack Paul Bunyan.

Virgil Films will release the indie feature Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan. This horror title had an appearance at the Shockfest Film Festival, where it picked up an award. Now, the film is set to release on home video formats this Summer. The film follows a mythical lumberjack of yore. An ancient tall tale is, in fact, real and Paul Bunyan has an axe to grind with some locals. The locals are in a camp for young offenders. And, Bunyan is ready to unleash an attack, after remaining dormant for over a 100 years. The film's DVD artwork is hosted above and an early still from the film is below. The artwork shows Bunyan with an enormous axe. The blood will spill June 18th. The still, past the break, shows some of Bunyan's handiwork. Several corpses lay about and some are even decapitated. View the gruesome scene below. Release Date: June 18th,...

When I think of Paul Bunyan, my mind instantly recalls the classic Disney cartoon I watched a million times before heading off to school as a child. It was sweet, colorful, and didn’t feature the big guy breaking the necks of woodland creatures. For those who always longed for a more violent version of the story, your chance to indulge is coming very soon. “Boogeyman 3″ director Gary Jones’ “Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan” is reportedly headed to DVD and VOD this June courtesy of Virgil Films. If you’re extremely lucky, then you’ll get to see the flick in a theater near you at some point this summer. Here’s a short and simple synopsis: A dark twist to the popular children’s fairytale, kids at boot camp discover the legend of Paul Bunyan is shockingly real. Can they escape the wrath of this giant axe wielding maniac,...

I’ve been looking forward to Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan ever since I first heard about it, and it won’t be too much longer until we all get a chance to see what happens when a great American tall tale gets a monstrous slasher makeover.
Is it correct to call it a slasher? If the killer’s preferred instrument of death is an axe and the killer in question is a giant lumberjack, then wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it a hacker? Eh, I’m over-thinking this.

Fairy tales and folklore seem to be all the rage lately, and speaking of rage, what could be more horrifying than a pissed off and gigantic killer swinging an axe big enough to take down a building?
Gary Jones (Boogeyman 3) directs b-movie veteran Joe Estevez, Tom Downey (Transmorphers), and Tim Lovelace (Mosquito) in this horror flick for Kinetic Filmmworks from a script by Miller and Jones.
Synopsis
The movie is a dark, contemporary take on the tall tale of lumberjack Paul Bunyan. Kids at a first-time offenders' boot camp discover that the legend of Paul Bunyan is real but is much more horrifying than they could have imagined. They incur the wrath of the 15-foot monstrous giant, who was banished from town 100 years ago and thought dead.

Recent releases by The Asylum have left me debating their oddly fascinating approach, praising when they very occasionally get things right and finding myself more than a little annoyed with their gimmicks. So when four Asylum flicks landed on my doorstep for review I approached with caution but also with as much of an open mind as I could manage, as I try to with any new release.
That said the hit to miss ratio with The Asylum swings rather strongly to the miss side so in an effort to rip the plaster off quickly, if this turned out to indeed be necessary, I settled down to watch all four films in a row. A mistake you might think but contained within were some pleasures, but unfortunately a whole lot of messy half-arsed filmmaking too. Like a moth to a flame…

One horror flick that has me curious is Gary Jones' Bunyan, a reimagining of the tall tale of titanic lumberjack Paul Bunyan that brings his legend to bloody life as a 15-foot giant maniac with a very large ax. Producer Jeff Miller was kind enough to send over some news stills from the movie and word of a new cast member who's no stranger to forests.
Dan Haggerty, best known as TV's "Grizzly Adams" but forever in the heart of schlock movie fans like myself for his portrayal of a chain-smoking department store Santa battling an evil Nazi elf in the bad movie classic Elves, has joined the cast of Bunyan.
Here's the latest press release regarding the ongoing filming of Bunyan:

It might sound kind of sad to those with discerning taste in cinema, but I genuinely get excited when The Asylum announces another project. Their latest endeavor, the Gary Jones-directed action extravaganza “Ballistica”, doesn’t skimp on the stars. Not only do you get Martin Cove and Robert Davi for your entertainment dollar, they’ve also thrown in Andrew Divoff at absolutely no extra charge. Now that’s what I call a bargain. Nevermind that the titular combat style is vaguely reminiscent of Gun Kata from Kurt Wimmer’s insanely overlooked “Equilibrium” — this movie looks pretty badass for a cheap direct-to-video action flick, and my expectations have been suitably adjusted. “Ballistica”, which also stars Paul Logan, will hit DVD on May 17th, 2011. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com/storage/xplayer/yo033.swf", "mplayer", "590", "375", "8", "#000000"); so.addParam("wmode","transparent"); so.addParam("swliveconnect", "true"); so.addParam("allowscriptaccess", "always"); so.

Tibor Takacs, the director of one of my favourite scary movies from my childhood – The Gate – is returning to the big screen (hopefully) with the creepy-crawly monster movie Spiders 3D.
Following a crash of an old Soviet space station in New York City’s subway tunnel, a new species of poisonous spiders is discovered. Inadvertently the spiders mutate to gigantic proportions and wreak havoc on the entire city.
Thanks once again to Dread Central and their exhaustive Afm (American Film Market) coverage we have the first look at the poster / sales art for the film – here’s hoping this low-budget production is as much fun as Eight Legged Freaks and Gary Jones’ Spiders!

I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone associated with the genre felt the inexplicable need to transform the iconic folk hero Paul Bunyan into a horror movie monster. Director Gary Jones — who is largely responsible for such legendary outings as “Spiders” and “Boogeyman 3″ — is in the middle of lensing his upcoming production “Bunyan”, a motion picture which finds a group of teenagers battling a 15-foot giant with a penchant for murder and mayhem. Robert Kurtzman’s Creature Corps is handling the effects. No word yet if Bunyan’s trusty blue ox will make an appearance, though I wouldn’t bank on it. “Bunyan” stars Joe Estevez, Tom Downey, Tim Lovelace, Jesse Kove, Amber Connor, Cliff Williams, Victoria Ramos, Kristina Kopf, and Jill Evyn. A handful of pics rest below. Thanks to Shock Till You Drop for providing the goodies.

Gary Jones is in principal photography on Bunyan , a bloody riff off the tall tale of, you guessed it, Paul Bunyan. The director previously helmed Boogeyman 3 , Spiders and Crocodile 2 . For his latest effort, he takes us to a first-time offenders boot camp where the kids there learn the Paul Bunyan legend is real, horrifying, and a 15-foot monstrous giant! We've got your first look via the photos below. The movie stars genre vet Joe Estevez, Tom Downey, and Tim Lovelace. Jesse Kove, Amber Connor, Cliff Williams, Victoria Ramos, Kristina Kopf, and Jill Evyn round out the cast. Jeff Miller scripted with Jones. The former is also co-producing. On effects duties, expect to see the work of Robert Kurtzman's Creature Corps. Shooting is taking place in the Los Angeles...

Boogeyman 3
Stars: Erin Cahill, Chuck Hittinger, Mimi Michaels and Nikki Sanderson | Written by Brian Sieve | Directed by Gary Jones
College student Audrey Allen (ex-Corie actress Sanderson) is haunted by the Boogeyman following her fathers death (in Boogeyman 2), and tries to convince her best friend Sarah (Cahill), a psychology student, that the Boogeyman is real.
