Jessica Henwick (“Glass Onion”) and Alisha Weir (“Abigail”) have been tapped for new animated feature “The Land of Sometimes.”
They will join “Star Wars” icon Ewan McGregor and “The Crown” star Helena Bonham Carter on the project, which also features one of the final performances from the late “Monty Python” alum Terry Jones.
A first look of the film, which is repped by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution for global sales, is set to be shown to buyers in Cannes next week with director Leon Joosen (“The Little Mermaid”) on hand to introduce the project.
“Be careful what you wish for!” reads the logline. “Twins Alfie and Elise get more than they bargained for when the Wish Collector takes them to an island full of wonder, with ever-changing seasons. They face a mechanical foe, fantastical creatures and a truth that shines brighter than any wish: the power of family.”

WarnerMedia has acquired the rights to new animated show “Master Moley,” starring Warwick Davis and Gemma Arterton, for its children’s platform Boomerang in more than 100 countries across Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Master Moley” is based on original stories written by British entrepreneur James Reatchlous, who spoke to Variety about how it came to life.
The deal, struck by Jetpack Distribution, will see the animation’s 30-minute special, “Master Moley By Royal Invitation,” head to the channel in November. The acquisition of the new 52-part series, comprising 11-minute episodes, “The Misadventures of Master Moley,” will continue the adventures of Master Moley and friends on Boomerang next year.
The animation follows adventurous mole Master Moley, who lives deep in a burrow under Queen Elizabeth II’s Windsor Castle in the bustling city of MoleTown, where he is the keeper of a magical book, which has the power to bring peace between humans and moles.

Every year there seems to be an inordinate amount of new CGI Christmas movies thrust upon unsuspecting supermarket shoppers – after all, most folks buy theses types of titles on impulse whilst browsing in the likes of Asda, Tesco et al. Titles that are watched once or twice and then sit on the shelf for the most of the next year or, even worse, are tossed in to the “get rid” pile (I know you all have one). Saving Santa is one such film.
Once upon a time, Santa operated with just a small workshop and a few elves. But, as Christmas has grown ever bigger, Santa has been forced to innovate!

Leviathan (12A)
(Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Véréna Paravel, 2012, Fra/UK/Us) 87 mins
An arthouse fishing-trawler documentary sounds like a practical joke, but this takes us to places we've never before – into the ocean depths and back out on to the decks with the catch. It's a series of dark, semi-abstract tableaux full of flapping fish, clanking machinery and tattooed fishermen doing wet, gory work. It's easy to forget this is real life you're watching.
Saving Mr Banks (PG)
(John Lee Hancock, 2013, Us) Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson. 125 mins
How Walt Disney came to make Mary Poppins was hardly a pressing movie mystery, and one suspects a spoonful of drama has been added, but the leads are eminently watchable.
Carrie (15)
(Kimberly Peirce, 2013, Us) Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore. 100 mins

Despite the star-studded voice cast accompanying this enchanting children’s animation, there’s a very good chance that Leon Joosen and Aaron Seelman’s Saving Santa has passed you by somewhat, as a low-key adventure movie that has been shy of much media attention or publicity. However it takes only a matter of moments into proceedings to discover why this is the case, as a poorly animated, hackneyed kids’ film that does little to inspire.
With dreams of being an inventor, opportunist and eccentric elf Bernard D. Elf (Martin Freeman) is made to feel a fool yet again when his innovative creation to bring back people’s favourite Christmas memories back to life fails miserably. However he is then presented with the perfect opportunity to prove his worth, when Santa (Tim Conway) is kidnapped by the evil Neville Baddington (Tim Curry), and his demanding mother Vera (Joan Collins), who have...

★★☆☆☆Released just in time for the festive period, Saving Santa (2013) is yet another animation given the cinematic treatment despite being planned as a Dtv feature. Directed by Leon Joosen and Aaron Seelman, it's a fairly watchable jaunt that's high on Christmas spirit but short on originality. Bernard (Martin Freeman) is a lowly stable elf with aspirations of one day joining the elf elite by becoming one of Santa's inventors. He hopes his latest gadget, which accesses people's happiest Christmas memories and replays them, can help fulfil his dream. However, an unexpected malfunction exposes Santa's secret location to the world.

An elf helps to save Santa’s reputation when something goes badly wrong at the North Pole... No, we haven’t been watching ace Aardman comedy Arthur Christmas in a desperate attempt to recreate the festive season. That’s the plot for Saving Santa, a new ‘toon set to feature the voices of Martin Freeman, Noel Clarke, Joan Collins and Tim Curry. While you might wonder why someone else wants to tackle a Christmas cartoon so soon after Aardman’s effort, that doesn’t seem to be bothering the team from Adulthood / Shank producers Gateway Films, which is using the new movie to launch its animated output.Freeman will be playing a clumsy elf who has to rescue Santa’s HQ when its location is discovered by a nasty villain. [1] Whether the world really needs another Romeo and Juliet adaptation is up for debate, but Carlos Carlei's upcoming film boasts some intriguing talent, at least. The script comes from Gosford Park and Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes, while young up-and-comers like Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Ed Westwick, and Kodi Smit-McPhee are lined up to star. The latest addition to the project is the always welcome Paul Giamatti, who's set to play Friar Laurence. A confidant to both Romeo and Juliet, the character plays a key role in the star-crossed lovers' fates. Shooting on the film, which is rather discouragingly being described as "Romeo and Juliet for the Twilight generation," is slated to begin this month in Italy. [Variety [2]] After the jump, Dr. John Watson and the Earl of Grantham book big-screen gigs. Variety reports that Martin Freeman, Tim Curry, and Noel Clarke have all signed on to provide voices for the UK animated movie Saving Santa; they join a cast that already includes Joan Collins, Pam Ferris, Craig Fairbass, and Chris Barrie. Directed by Leon Joosen (The Little Mermaid), Saving Santa centers around one of Santa’s elves, an outcast, who embarks on a mission to save their North Pole workshop when the location is discovered by an undefined “evil character.”
The article also mentions that Santa is in possession of a time machine — so, expect a subplot involving the elf having to make his parents fall in love at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance (not really). Production gets underway tomorrow, and the movie is being produced by Gateway Films, a UK production company that is making Saving Santa their first animated feature.
