There have been numerous medical dramas on television, and 10 years ago, on May 27, 2014, The Night Shift joined that list. The NBC drama, with a cast including Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Ken Leung, Brendan Fehr, Robert Bailey, Jr., Jeananne Goossen, and Scott Wolf, ran four seasons and for three of them was a welcome addition to the summer lineup (the second aired in the spring). Created by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the drama followed the lives of the staff who work the late night shift in the emergency room at San Antonio Memorial Hospital, and according to Macken, who was last seen on La Brea (which ended after three seasons on NBC), that’s not the only thing that made it stand out. “What Gabe and Jeff did was everyone that came onto that show in any capacity in every episode they knew or worked with usually, or if there...

The show with perhaps the best key art (or at least, the cheesiest) in all of television is coming to an end. “The Night Shift” won’t be back for a fifth season, NBC announced Friday.
“We want to thank our amazing creators and executive producers, Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, for their dedication and stellar work; a cast and crew that were second to none; and the city of Albuquerque, N.M., which graciously opened its arms to us,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “For four seasons ‘The Night Shift’ gave audiences a window to heroic doctors, nurses and all-star medical workers who never hesitated to give their blood, sweat and time to help those most in need.”

The Night Shift has officially ended: NBC has axed the summer medical drama after four seasons, TVLine has learned.
Eoin Macken and Jill Flint headlined the cast as ER doctors working the late shift at San Antonio Memorial Hospital, where many of the doctors had also served in the military. Party of Five alum Scott Wolf played trauma surgeon Dr. Scott Clemmens, starting out as a recurring guest star and moving up to series regular for Seasons 3 and 4. (Ken Leung made headlines last November when he departed the show prior to Season 4.)

NBC has opted not to go forward with a fifth season of The Night Shift. Some shows premiere big. Some sneak onto the screen. NBC's "The Night Shift" is definitely an example of the latter. While the medical drama premiered last summer without much fanfare, it built a solid viewership over the course of its eight episode run, locking down a Season 2 after just a few weeks on the air. Featuring an ensemble cast including Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Brendan Fehr, Freddy Rodriguez and Scott Wolf, "Night Shift" takes a "M.A.S.H"-esque look at life in a San Antonio emergency room, staffed by a blend of civilian and former military doctors. During a visit to the set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Indiewire sat down with executive producer Gabe Sachs (who created the show with partner Jeff Judah) to learn how two producers best known for "Freaks and Geeks" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" went from writing about teenagers to emergency room doctors,...

Steve Martin is in negotiations with Disney to star in a family comedy called Magic Camp that he co-wrote with Stu Zicherman, the writer and director of A.C.O.D. I am a huge fan of Martin, and I enjoy his writing style. The original script was written by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, who also wrote Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
According to THR, the story tells of "a straitlaced banker who returns to Magic Camp, which he attended as a shy child. This time he is a counselor who makes it his mission to improve the lives of all the kids while keeping an eye on his ultimate prize, the top spot at the Golden Wand competition."
This is the perfect project for Martin, as one of his early jobs was working at Merlin's Magic Shop at Disneyland. He was also a magician in his early days as a comedian.

Fans of Steven Martin may recall that the comedian and actor has a history with Disney in more ways than one. Martin has starred in Shopgirl (which he also wrote), Bringing Down the House and two Father of the Bride films (a third has been rumored but debunked by the actor himself), all from Touchstone Pictures, which can be found under the Disney banner. But decades ago, before he got famous, Martin actually worked at the Magic Shop at Disneyland, and even performed magic in his early comedy career. And now he'll get his magical groove back as THR reports he will lead the family comedy Magic Camp. Here's a video of Steve Martin doing magic as The Great Flydini from "The Tonight Show" in 1992: The original script comes from Diary of a Wimpy Kid writers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, but they're not only producing the film as...

Where in the world has Steve Martin been lately? The celebrated comic actor’s last big screen role was in the ill-received birding comedy The Big Year way back in 2011, and the only project he’s taken on since has been animated caper Home, in which he lends his voice to an alien. Luckily, it appears that Martin may be making a comeback, with word that he’s in talks to star in Magic Camp for Disney.

Years ago at the Ledger, I did an occasional feature called "A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words" where, in lieu of writing a review of some terrible show or TV-movie, I would simply select a publicity still that in some way captured its terribleness, thus allowing me to devote my time to writing about something better. With NBC's new hospital drama "The Night Shift" (it premieres tonight at 10), I was sorely tempted to revive that tradition because... well, look at that picture attached to this review. That is perhaps the single most terrible publicity photo I have ever seen for a television show. Worse than anything associated with "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer," worse than the "girls club" image that made its stars look like they were appearing on the cover of a pornographic VHS tape. It's hilarious because most of the actors were not only clearly Photoshopped...

Freaks and Geeks Episode 6 ‘I’m With The Band’

At its core, ‘I’m With The Band’ is about fear. Fear of failure, fear of exposure… and most of all, the fear of the unknown, as seen with the two focal points of the episode: Nick and Sam, finding a genius balance between the depressing (Nick) and the hilarious (Sam). The dichotomy is necessary: for all the realistic and painful things we can all see waiting in the shadows for these characters in the future, there’s none more heartbreaking on the entire show than Nick Andopolis.
For Nick, his biggest fear in the world is turning out like his hard-ass dad, who never cracks and a smile and holds a particularly low opinion of his son’s academic and non-academic pursuits, particularly his noisy drumming...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.
None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't become series including the high-profile Charlize Theron-produced drama about the Hatfields and McCoys, the Bruckheimer-produced...

Though it lasted only a single season on NBC, Freaks and Geeks is justifiably beloved — for presenting an unvarnished take on adolescence in the Dawson’s Creek era, for perfectly mixing comedy and drama, and for launching the careers of big names like Judd Apatow, Paul Feig, James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel. And it’s not only fans who have a special place in their hearts for Freaks — since its cancellation, nearly every member of its cast and crew has said that working on the series was the high point of their career.

Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is back at the CW with Metropolis, a drama based on the 2000 British series. Thomas will write and executive produce the project, about a group of friends who are struggling with their adult lives not living up to the expectations they had when they were idealistic college friends. The original limited series, created by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) and produced by Granada TV, had an eight-episode run with a cast that included James Fox, Louise Lombard, James Purefoy and Matthew Rhys. The adaptation is being produced by Warner Bros TV, Rob Thomas Prods, ITV Studios America (formerly Granada America) and Littlefield Co, with Warren Littlefield and ITV’s Paul Buccieri executive producing. This is Thomas’ second stab at adapting Metropolis. The previous one was at ABC during the 1999-2000 development season when the project went to pilot starring Michael Ealy, with the CW...

Exclusive: NBC has given an off-cycle pilot order to a medical drama from writers/executive producers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah (90210). The deal for the pilot with producer Sony Pictures TV is currently being finalized. The untitled project is an ensemble medical show about a group of Army doctors who return to work the night shift together at a hospital in San Antonio. Referred to as After Hours or The Last Stand, the Sachs/Judah project was one of several medical dramas NBC put in development last season. It picked up two of them, County and the Jekyll & Hyde-themed Do No Harm, to pilot and one, Do No Harm, to series for midseason. But NBC held onto the Sachs/Judah project after the upfronts and in August ordered a second script with an eye toward a pilot order. Last season, NBC ordered two medical drama pilots, County and the Jekyll & Hyde-themed Do No Harm, one of which, Do No Harm, was picked up to series for midseason. Now I hear NBC is revisiting another medical drama it developed last season. Referred to as After Hours or The Last Stand, the project, from writers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah and Sony Pictures TV, is an ensemble medical show about a group of Army doctors who return to work the night shift together at a hospital in San Antonio. I hear NBC held onto the project after the upfronts and has ordered a second script. Additionally, I hear Sony TV is looking to attach a director, a move that often improves a project’s chances.

Sony Pictures TV has sold 3 more comedy projects to the broadcast networks: an U.S. version of the French-Canadian format Les Invincibles to Fox with Family Guy executive producer Chris Sheridan writing and Luke Greenfield (Something Borrowed) directing and an untitled half-hour to ABC with Peter Tolan executive producing. Sony TV’s tally now stands at 49 comedy sales this season. Additionally, the studio has sold a drama from comedy veterans Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah to NBC. The Invincibles revolves around three guys and one girl, all in their 20s, who make a pact to simultaneously dump their girlfriend or boyfriend (or quit their job if unattached) and reclaim their lives. CAA-repped Greenfield was the driver behind the project and brought in Sheridan as a writer. The two are executive producing with 3 Arts’ Tom Lassally and Jonathan Berry. Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Real Steel) may be leaving 20th Century Fox’s 3D remake of the 1966 classic sci-fi adventure Fantastic Voyage, if the two sides can not come to an agreement on the budget and star.
THR reports it’s “more likely than not” that Levy will move on. The director reportedly wants an A-list actor to lead the feature’s team of scientist’s in a miniaturized submarine tasked with removing a blood clot from a colleague’s brain. Hugh Jackman, who stars in Real Steel, was the front-runner for a time, but is presumably busy with Fox’s own The Wolverine. Instead, Levy wants Will Smith, a reliable box office draw, and will meet with him to discuss the possibility in the coming week.

From its hastily constructed beginnings as a no-brainer way in which to build buzz for the fledgling upstart CW network, generating headlines has never been a problem for 90210. Thus, it’s only fitting — as we countdown towards the much-anticipated fourth season premiere — that star Michael Steger (Navid Shirazi) continues in the show’s illustrious tradition by making a few of his very own. Namely, that this upcoming fourth season may mark the beginning of the end.
“I keep saying five years,” said Steger when asked during a recent one-on-one interview with the TV Addict as to just how long he sees the series lasting for. “But you know, that always changes, the CW likes to hold onto its shows.”
Suffice it to say, that’s not the only thing the CW likes to do when it comes to 90210. Enter the show’s third change at the top in four seasons,...
