The whole concept of art triumphing over every worldly problem sounds novel on paper, but it’s really hard to execute on screen. There’s a huge risk of things turning into a gimmicky mess. But that’s not the case with Steven Knight’s latest show, This Town, which is truly magnificent in every possible sense. It drops you in a world of chaos that is filled with genuinely likable characters worthy enough to root for. Engaging from the spectacular opening sequence of a riot breaking out to the final scene of a maddeningly beautiful concert, This Town is an ingenious piece of work. The 80s’ set Irish drama is a heady mix of many genres, from crime noir to coming of age to dysfunctional family drama to musical. Imagine if Sons of Anarchy was made by John Carney, and you get the idea!

The Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry announced 25 new additions to its catalog, including recordings by Janet Jackson, Nas, and Kermit the Frog.
Jackson’s 1989 album, Rhythm Nation 1814, was added to the registry, with the Library of Congress recognizing how Jackson brushed aside record executive wishes to repeat the success of Control and instead made an album that grappled with racism and social injustice. Jimmy Jam, one of the album’s producers, told the LoC, “We wanted Rhythm Nation to really communicate empowerment. It was making an observation, but it...

There were several highlight moments on Sunday’s episode of “American Idol” as the Top 20 performed in the safety of their own homes and the judges provided critiques from their somewhat more upscale domiciles. Not even a worldwide epidemic can stop these talented singers from giving it their all. Among my favorites were Dillon James aka the spiritual cowboy with his ready-for-a-music-video Western backdrop as he sang Ray Lamontagne‘s “Let it Be Me” and Just Sam in a red gown while doing justice to Fantasia‘s “Believe.”
But the performance that really got to me was Jonny West, the 23-year-old piano teacher from Murrieta, California, who went through to the Hollywood rounds with his sweetheart and returning auditioner Margie Mays. Alas, Margie did not make the top 40. But last night, she gladly filled in as her honey’s stage crew and got some camera time herself on the show as well.

When you're invited by Pixar to check out footage from their upcoming movie, you don't turn it down. In fact, you count the days until the glorious moment that you're sitting the theater, ready to be wowed by the latest entry in an already esteemed library of animated films.
Last Thursday (June 19), we were treated to select, work-in-progress scenes from Disney-Pixar's "Inside Out"(which comes out June 19, 2015) from the creative team behind "Up," Oscar-winning director Pete Docter and Oscar-nominated producer Jonas Rivera. While we don't want to give away everything we saw (where's the fun in that?), we will kick your imagination into overdrive with some of the highlights.
Before we get started, you're going to need to know the story (if you don't already), and it's best to let the studio tell it to you straight:
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley,...

For the first time in nearly a decade, Pixar Animation Studios is taking the year off. The Emeryville-Calif.-based company will not be releasing a film in 2014, and it also finds itself in an interesting position, striving to maintain its identity as a haven for bold original visions while at the same time seeing some of its biggest successes inevitably move into franchise and sequel terrain. Wednesday night representatives of the studio took over a theater in West Hollywood's Directors Guild of America (DGA) headquarters to present materials from one such original vision from "Monsters, Inc." and "Up" director Pete Docter: "Inside Out." The film is set for release exactly one year from now, on June 19, 2015. Producer Jonas Rivera quipped that such a seemingly long lead is "dog years" in animation time, where projects typically move at a glacial pace for years on end. When he and Docter finished...

Sarah Brightman has an unusual and beautiful duet partner on the latest song to arrive from her new album. "Hawaii '78" features the late and great Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, who originally released "Hawai'i '78" for his 1993 album "Facing Future." That album also featured his most famous track, his cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and coincidentally "Hawai'i '78" was another expression of hope and prayer. Here, Brightman is joining in that vision with this interpretation, "Hawaii '78." A bonus track available only on Target's limited edition CD of "Dreamchaser," this version sends the roots-laden song space-bound, with the famed...

As many iTunes lovers and Youtube fanatics understand, music (old and new) has become a huge factor on hit television shows and both the show and artists featured benefit from the collaboration. Ever YouTube a certain scene from your favorite show for hours on end? Did it have a catchy song that you immediately downloaded? Yes, the odds are that you have.
Television show soundtracks are an obsession over here and the music played make that specific scene that much more memorable. "Don't Stop Believin'" instantly became a hit all over again when the Glee club sang it in the first episode. And remember "My Life Would Suck Without You" before the credits scrolled? McKinley High may do covers for the most part, but at least we get a Mr. Schue shimmy out of it from time to time.

Glen highlights the tracks that tend to get aired just a little too often in modern day movies...
There are quite literally millions of songs available on this planet called Earth, catering to all ages and tastes. But in spite of the vastness of this musical back catalogue, there seems to be a small percentage that crop up time and time again in films, depriving other songs of much deserved royalties.
In an attempt to encourage the movers and shakers of the movie industry (like they actually read this) to spread the love, I thought I’d highlight a few songs that have been over-used in the movies.
Just to clarify, I don’t necessarily hate the songs included (except Who Let The Dogs Out, but that’s not really a song). It’s just that I’ve heard enough of them in the movies, and think they should be...

She and her dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy have been scoring well with the judges so far. On Monday, April 4th, 2011, however, the dancing duo flopped on the dance floor during their rumba to Somewhere Over the Rainbow! Kirstie Alley fell to the floor during her dance routine with Maksim! A fan favorite, Kirstie Alley found herself on the floor after Maksim apparently was unable to hold her up during a move in their routine. Each of the celebrity dance couples were to choose songs for their dances that tell a story for them. The evening turned out to be very emotional for many of the contestants. Here’s the complete list of songs performed by the dancig celebrity duos and their...

Can Al Gore's global warming documentary become shorthand for a genre? (The scareumentary?) That's what Participant Media's Jeffrey Skoll implied when introducing the new film "Countdown to Zero" at its New York premiere Wednesday night. He noted that they'd been in search of the next topic to do "'The Inconvenient Truth' of," and what we were about to watch was the result. "Countdown to Zero," in other words, aims to be "The Inconvenient Truth" of nuclear warfare. If you feel a little short on global concerns, it offers plenty to add to your plate.
Taking its structure from an excerpt from JFK's "nuclear sword of Damocles" speech to the U.N. in 1961, "Countdown to Zero" examines the various way we could arrive at nuclear annihilation via "accident, or miscalculation, or by madness." "Accident," as in the incidents when nuclear missiles were erroneously loaded onto bombers that then flew over the country,...

Let's get this out of the way first: These aren't necessarily bad songs (except maybe for "All Star," though I sort of like it). In fact, some are well-loved classics by some of the most respected musical artists in history. A few of these are among my favorites.
But somewhere along the line, someone decided that, if their movie contained a certain scene (say, someone arriving in London) it just had to be accompanied by a certain song (in this case, "London Calling" by The Clash). They're almost always played during a montage or a scene with no dialogue, because it's just easier to use a well-known song to say what you want than it is to have to come up with anything original. Not that they aren't very effective when used in great movies, but by and large we're just kind of sick of them being used in films.

Amid conflicting reports over her love life with Brad Pitt, Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has paid tribute to late mother Marcheline Bertrand. In remembrance of her mother who died of ovarian cancer on January 27, 2007, the "Changeling" actress along with brother James Haven have put together a video to celebrate their memories of her.

Etta James must be taking lessons from Faye Dunaway in how to be a diva. Etta James came out swinging against Beyonce for daring to perform her signature song — "At Last" — as the first dance for Barack and Michelle Obama at an inaugural ball. At a Jan. 28 concert in Seattle, the veteran singer let rip: "I tell you, that woman he has singing for him, singing my song, she gonna get her ... whipped. I can’t stand Beyonce, she had no business up there singing ... my song that I’ve been singing forever."
However, that was not the first time Beyonce had sung "At Last." She played Etta James in the December release "Cadillac Records" and performed that tune among many others in the film. And at the premiere of the picture, Beyonce sang her predecessor’s praises: "She’s a living legend and I want her to love the movie,...
