In preparing for his music supervisor work on Apple TV+’s “City on Fire,” Jonathan Leahy began with what all good pregames began circa 2003: He opened up his CD binders.
“I’m a bit of a hoarder of books and recorded media, and I’ve looked at those Case Logic binders many times,” Leahy told IndieWire. “They’re big, they’re heavy, they’re bulky — maybe it’s time to get rid of them? But I held onto them, and this project began with the fully analog, real-world version of the iPod shuffle. Perfect example of that was Ambulance Ltd, which was such a great never-quite-made-it artist of the era. That’s the very first licensed music you hear in the show, when the Charlie character heads into the record store.”

Is the decade-long “The Voice” Instant Save curse about to be broken? If John Legend‘s Florida singer Omar Jose Cardona ends up winning Season 22 during the Tuesday, December 13 finale, he’ll make history as the first artist to prevail who was previously saved by social media users. Since the creation of the Instant Save twist in Season 6, none of its recipients have ever gone on to win “The Voice.” Britton Buchanan (Season 14) and Toneisha Harris (Season 18) came closest by each placing second behind their winners, but all of the other times the saved artist finished near the bottom of their respective finales.

According to Gold Derby predictions, Omar is predicted to come in fifth place after earning the last Instant Save of the year. This 33-year-old Orlando native has 100/1 odds to win Season 22, compared to 4/9 odds for front-runner Bodie (Team Blake...

Courtney Marie Andrews has spent the past decade or so fine tuning and revising her rootsy singer-songwriter formula, to great results: See the gospel-soul inflections of 2018’s May Your Kindness Remain or the sparse heartbroken folk of her last album, 2020’s Old Flowers. The former LP helped land Andrews on stage with Dolly Parton in 2019, singing “9 to 5” alongside Sheryl Crow and Maggie Rogers, while the latter earned Andrews her first Grammy nomination.

The blind auditions and the battles are a thing of the past, which means it’s now time for the knockouts on “The Voice.” In this round each coach pairs up two artists who’ll then perform their own songs on the big stage. One artist survives, the other is eliminated … unless a rival coach “steals” them for their own team. This year’s mega mentor was Usher, a former coach who prevailed in Season 6 with Josh Kaufman. Heading into the knockouts for Season 19, each coach had seven artists still on their teams:
Team Blake Shelton: Ben Allen, Ian Flanigan, Jim Ranger, Jus Jon, Worth the Wait, James Pyle (stolen) and Taryn Papa (saved).
Team John Legend: Bailey Rae, Cami Clune, Casmè, John Holiday, Tamara Jade, Lauren Frihauf (stolen) and Julia Cooper (saved).
Team Gwen Stefani: Carter Rubin, Chloé Hogan, Payge Turner, Ryan Berg, Van Andrew, Joseph Soul (stolen...

The Hold Steady released two new songs to their Bandcamp. First, “The Stove and the Toaster” is a stomping rocker punctuated with piles of guitar licks, a piano interlude and brass. Singer Craig Finn narrates a story about all sorts of nefarious characters and revenge plots.
During the chorus he sneers, “Got some new information from the chef and the chauffeur/ They put the stash in the stove, they keep the cash in the toaster/ Down in Las Cruces they don’t play with jokers/ I hope I still know...

Brynn Cartelli won season 14 of “The Voice” on Tuesday by edging out Britton Buchanan in one of the closest votes in the history of the reality competition series. Buchanan, who was coached by one-time winning coach Alicia Keys, had been strongly positioned heading into Tuesday’s finale based on his performances on Monday’s final.
Two of the three songs that Buchanan performed on May 21 made the iTunes top 10, thus qualifying for the vote multiplier. He grabbed the top spot with his original single “Where You Come From.” And his cover of the Young Rascals classic “Good Lovin” took the 10th and final slot. (His duet with Keys on “Wake Me Up” by Avicii ranked 19th).
Cartelli, who was mentored by rookie coach Kelly Clarkson, also landed two of her three songs in the top 10 on iTunes. She was in third place on the sales chart with the original tune...

“The Voice” season 13 winner Chloe Kohanski returned to the show on Tuesday and sang her new single “Come This Far” just minutes before it was revealed that Brynn Cartelli had won season 14. While Cartelli was coached by rookie Kelly Clarkson, Kohanski was the sixth champion for Blake Shelton, who has been with the show since the start.
Kohanski won the season 13 title on Dec. 19 after delivering a soaring performance of her original song “Wish I Didn’t Love You” as well as a cover of the 1980s hit “Bette Davis Eyes” and a duet with Shelton on “You Got It.” However, the single of her new tune only made it to No. 69 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Is that a sign of things to come when Kohanski releases her first album later this year? That first track, “Come This Far,” certainly sounds promising. She has kept her harder edge and revealed...

The 14th champion of “The Voice” is set to be crowned on Tuesday, May 22 but according to our latest Gold Derby odds, it may not be the artist most fans were expecting. Team Alicia Keys‘ Britton Buchanan has been the favorite to take home the grand prize throughout most of the season, but things were shaken up during the Tuesday, May 15 live results show. The frontrunner hit a major roadblock when he failed to earn enough votes to yield a Top 3 finish, forcing him to battle it out for the final Instant Save of the season. Since the Instant Save made its debut in Season 6, no artist advancing to the finale by this method has ever won “The Voice.” In fact, they all finished in last place in their finales.
