There have been a lot of "Transformers" cartoons since 1984. Most of them (and I say this as a fan) are pretty unimpressive. One of the best ones is "Transformers: Animated," which aired from 2007 to 2009 on Cartoon Network. Network executive Sam Register created the series like it was "Teen Titans" with robots. Register even recruited one of that show's character designers, the late Derrick J. Wyatt, resulting in a similar art style.
"Animated" broke away from past series' tenets, transforming them you might say — the show's team even cast Megatron voice actor extraordinaire David Kaye as Optimus Prime instead. The series was explicitly pitched as "more like a superhero show than a 'Transformers' show" (read the original production bible here for many tantalizing insights and scrapped ideas). The Autobots each had unique powers and faced off against human villains; against the Decepticons, they were definite underdogs.

DreamWorks Animation has delivered a Halloween treat: gateway horror series “Fright Krewe” has been renewed for a second season.
Look for the supernatural war brewing in New Orleans to continue when Season 2 comes to Hulu and Peacock in 2024.
“Fright Krewe” is Created and Executive Produced by Eli Roth & James Frey. The series is also Executive Produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco.
In the 10-episode series, ” An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”
The first season of 10 episodes recently debuted on Hulu and Peacock on October 2. In my review, I wrote that the inaugural season “offers enough supernatural charm, heart, and whimsy to endear Soleil and her friends to viewers, hoping to see their ascension to full hero in the future.

Jeopardy!‘s Second Chance Tournament is still going strong and one competitor’s strategy didn’t quite pay off by the latest episode’s end as they went all-in on Final Jeopardy! with an unsatisfactory payoff. The September 26 episode featured returning players Michalle Gould, a librarian from Laguna Beach, California, Ollie Savage, a high school English and film studies teacher from Burbank, California, and David Kaye, a high school English teacher from Scottsdale, Arizona. When it came time to chat with host Ken Jennings, Ollie shared that he was going follow the advice from one of Arsenal’s coaches, which was to “go all in,” when it came to betting. His strategy seemed promising as he led the leaderboard going into Final Jeopardy! against David and Michalle. Heading into the final round, Ollie had raked in $15,600 next to Michalle’s $13,200 and David’s $7,000, but he was the only one stumped...

Voice actor David Kaye still remembers getting the news he'd been cast on "Transformers: Animated." Two weeks after a callback where he read for multiple characters, he got a call from his agent. Kaye, who was driving in downtown LA, answered his phone and heard the news: he'd got the part ... of Optimus Prime. Kaye's response as he swerved his car: "Who?!"
While Kaye had read for Optimus Prime (and noticed voice director Susan Blu liked what he was doing), he walked into the audition expecting to get a different part. The part, in fact, that was furthest from Optimus Prime — Megatron. At the time, Kaye had been voicing Megatron for about a decade, first in "Beast Wars."
During the 1990s and 2000s, Kaye was a staple of Canada's voice-acting pool. Mainframe Entertainment, based in Vancouver, developed "Beast Wars" and recruited local talent, Kaye among them. A few years later,...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses the endings of several titles released by Marvel Studios in 2021 and 2022, from “WandaVision” through “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
At the very end of 2021’s “WandaVision” — the inauguration of Marvel Studios’ post-“Avengers: Endgame” slate of titles, collectively known as Phase Four — we see Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) quietly sipping tea by a lakeside cabin, recovering from the traumatic events of the series finale. As the camera pushes deeper into the cabin, however, we see that Wanda is actually astral projecting as the Scarlet Witch so she can study the Darkhold, a book of corrupting dark magic. Suddenly, she hears the voices of her two lost sons, and the screen cuts to black. At the time the episode streamed in March 2021, we were left to wonder how that could happen and what Wanda would do next.

Attention, bedroom walls of those 12 and under: you’re about to be joined by a new poster.
Marvel Studios today released a poster for the Harry Styles “Starfox” character from the new Eternals film. It’s the first officially sanctioned piece about his casting, which was one of the big surprises in the movie.
Styles briefly stepped into the MCU in the first of two bonus scenes that air after the credits.
The bonus post-credit scene shows Eros and Pip the Troll (voiced by Patton Oswalt) appearing before Thena (Angelina Jolie), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), who are left confused and need assistance after Arishem the Judge (David Kaye) takes Sersi (Gemma Chan), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), and Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) to reckon for their actions.

Spoiler Warning: This story includes discussions of the ending of Marvel Studios “Eternals,” currently playing in theaters.
“Eternals” was always meant to shake things up.
When Chloé Zhao first met with Marvel Studios about the possibility of directing the film, she was told from the start by the company’s executives that “Eternals” was seen internally as a reset button for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the conclusive events of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” It would be a way to cleanse the studio’s storytelling palate from the Infinity Saga, and set up the next decade of MCU narrative possibilities. While characters in “Eternals” do mention other Marvel luminaries, no one from the previous 25 feature films in the MCU makes an appearance — the first time that’s ever happened in the MCU. (Even “Doctor Strange” includes Thor in its post-credits scene.) It’s as close to a clean slate as an MCU movie has ever been.

Stars: Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Lauren Ridloff, Lia McHugh, Harish Patel | Written by Chloé Zhao, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, Kaz Firpo | Directed by Chloé Zhao
Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao directs the latest Marvel superhero adventure, Eternals, which attempts to make a few subtle-but-important shifts in the MCU. As such, it’s largely successful, though the standard Marvel formula is nigh-on indomitable and remains firmly in place.
Based on characters and concepts created by Jack Kirby in 1974, Eternals posits that alien beings called Celestials created a race of immortal, super-powered humanoids called Eternals and sent them to Earth 7,000 years ago, in order to protect humanity from invading alien monsters known as Deviants. The Eternals extinguished the last of the Deviants some 500 years ago, so it’s understandably concerning when one of them attacks Sersi (Gemma Chan) in present-day London.

The day after the red carpet premiere of Marvel Studios “Eternals,” director Chloé Zhao looked relaxed, almost serene, as she sat in a hotel suite awaiting her next interview. Her face lit up when she was asked about how her film features the first genuine sex scene in a Marvel Studios movie, and she happily talked at length about how she slipped in mentions of DC Comics icons Superman and Batman.
But when questions about the film’s two post-credits scenes came up, Zhao’s eyes nervously darted to her publicist sitting nearby.
“I will try my best — I’ve been advised…” she said, before trailing off.
Zhao’s trepidation is understandable. The news that Harry Styles appears in one of the post-credits scenes as Thanos’ brother Eros,...

A near-perfect episode of Young Justice is marred only by the real world.
This Young Justice review contains spoilers.
Young Justice: Outsiders Episode 7
Probably the biggest hurdle to the success of Young Justice: Outsiders after six years away was getting everything back together again after everyone went their separate ways, and some things have changed irrevocably. "Evolution" was a terrific episode, one of the finest Vandal Savage stories in any medium, but as good as David Kaye is in this episode voicing him, it's still a reminder that a ton of time has passed since the show was last on the air and some of their voice cast couldn't come back.
The two missing voice actors this season are Tim Curry as G. Gordon Godfrey and Miguel Ferrer as Savage, and they've both been missed so far this season. Curry's Godfrey was perfect as the frothing, barely-holding-it-together maniac talk radio host.

2016 promises to be the year where video game adaptions might turn a corner, with Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed, and maybe even Angry Birds promising to undo the untold years of damage done by lacklustre movies based on previously pixelated properties. Before those though, we get the animated Ratchet & Clank, based on the delightful Playstation platformer/shoot ‘em up that first came our way in 2002, which attempts to kick off this particular revolution. For the uninitiated, Lombax Ratchet (James Arnold Taylor) and robot Clank (David Kaye) are a pair of galaxy spanning adventurers, and their first big screen adventures goes back to the beginning and re-imagines the events of the first game as the pair meet for the first time, after Clank escapes the death factory of the evil Chairman Drek (Paul Giamatti) with knowledge of the villain’s nefarious plans for the galaxy. Been a problem too big for them to deal with,...

To proclaim that film adaptations of video games have a spotty history of box office success would be an understatement. In fact, the only such effort to inspire more than a single big-screen sequel has been Resident Evil, and most attempts to achieve similar success have resulted in epic disasters like Super Mario Bros., Wing Commander and Bloodrayne over the years. So, it’s worth noting that Ratchet & Clank – the first feature-length film based on the massively successful video game series – had the odds stacked against it from the start.
Whereas some video game films (like the aforementioned Mario adventure) are misguided enough to disregard the mythology that fans have grown to love, the narrative of Ratchet & Clank remains remarkably true to the 2002 game that launched the franchise as well as the revamped PlayStation 4 version that recently hit shelves. The story chronicles the origin story of the titular heroes (voiced...

We had James Arnold Taylor and David Kaye, the the voices of Ratchet and Clank, respectively, in to tell us what to expect from the adaptation of the popular game, teach us to be famous voiceover actors, and do some iconic movie moments as some of their most famous characters. Example: Marvel's J.A.R.V.I.S does the Inigo Montoya speech from Princes Bride. Take a look in the player above or below! I also hosted an event at Google for the movie recently for kids participating in the Project Lead the Way (a non-profit organization that develops Stem curricula for use by elementary, middle, and high schools) and a 'Femineers' program to encourage girls to learn and interact more with engineering and science.

I would feel dishonest writing this review if I didn’t mention my attachment to the game series on which this film is based: I am a massive fan and have been playing them since Ratchet and Clank was first released in 2002. I have played every single entry in the franchise and have almost always been completely satisfied with my experience. Naturally, when I heard my beloved duo was making the transition to the big screen, I was delighted. Perhaps it was these admittedly high expectations that led to it being a generally disappointing experience, however there are a few reasons that I think I would have come to this conclusion regardless of my history with the franchise.

From Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment, Ratchet & Clank is a CG-animated movie based on the iconic PlayStation video game.
Two unlikely heroes struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.
The film features the voicecast of Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorne, Rosario Dawson, Jim Ward, James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye, Armin Shimerman, and Sylvester Stallone.

Could have been assembled entirely from clips from other movies — mostly the Star Wars prequels — and would have been better if it had been. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): never hopeful about based-on-videogame movies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ah, so there’s my answer, once again.
I was wondering how that standard movie philosophy still applied to me. You know, that standard movie philosophy that is not only the stuff but the actual stuffing of 99 percent of wish-fulfillment genre fantasy movies for decades now. I approached Ratchet & Clank with great anticipation. Can I do anything? Can I be anything I want to be? Am I destined for greatness, to save the world or even the whole galaxy even if I am a foolhardy, thoughtless, unfocused screwup with almost nothing to my name but maybe some undisciplined smarts and outsized aspirations to grandeur?...

yThe beloved Playstation video game Ratchet & Clank has now become a full-blown animated feature film. For those unfamiliar with the critically acclaimed series, it focuses on a lowly mechanic named Ratchet, who idolizes an elite squad of combatants called the Galactic Rangers. He desperately wants to join the team in protecting the galaxy – and he gets the chance when he meets Clank, a robot who escapes from vile alien Chairman Drek.
Clank wants to warn everyone that Drek is hellbent on destroying every planet in the galaxy, and he and Ratchet must prove their worth to the Rangers as they team up to stop Drek.
Voice-over artists James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet and David Kaye as Clank, who have been voicing the characters from the game’s beginning, are joined by an all-star cast here, including Sylvester Stallone, Rosario Dawson, John Goodman, Paul Giamatti and Bella Thorne.
