The Screen Actors Guild named Matthew McConaughey best actor at its Los Angeles ceremony on January 18 while Cate Blanchett took top actress honours.
McConaughey’s performance as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club follows his Golden Globe win last weekend and rounds out a perfect week that also brought an Oscar nomination.
The Texan must now be regarded as the favourite for the Academy Award on March 2.
Similarly Cate Blanchett is the one to beat for her acclaimed turn as Jasmine in Blue Jasmine, although she has led from the front throughout the season. The Australian actress enjoyed a similarly successful week with a Globe win and an Oscar nod.
Jared Leto made it a one-two for Dallas Buyers Club with his triumph in the supporting actor race for his role of Rayon, while Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years A Slave prevailed in the supporting actress stakes for her performance as Patsey.

The odds of Cate Blanchett winning her second Oscar look even stronger after she collected the Screen Actors Guild award on Sunday for best lead actress in Blue Jasmine.
Similarly Matthew McConaughey.s hopes of taking the best lead actor prize have improved after SAG recognised his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.
The SAG awards for Jared Leto as best supporting actor for Dallas Buyers Club and for Lupita Nyong.o as supporting actress in 12 Years A Slave won.t have dimmed either.s chance of winning gold.
Meanwhile the outstanding cast award for American Hustle is viewed by some pundits as a harbinger of that film.s prospects of taking the best picture gong, as happened last year with Argo.
.At this point it just doesn.t appear Blanchett can be beaten . and she still has BAFTA to go before the Academy opens its envelopes on March 2,. opined Deadline com.s Peter Hammond.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were upset in their respective acting categories, but Breaking Bad won the night’s top prize, taking home its first Emmy for Best Drama. It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

Maybe, just maybe, Louis C.K. can do it. Bring home the Emmy for Best Comedy Series, that is.
Comedian Louis C.K.’s free form FX show, Louie, got six Emmy nominations with its biggest score in the category for Outstanding Comedy Series. It was also nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (Melissa Leo) and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series (Susan E. Morse, A.C.E., Editor – (“Daddy’s Girlfriend Part 2”).
This was the first time any basic cable show has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series and for once stop the domination of network comedies like Modern Family from taking all of the major awards in the comedy categories. Other basic cable comedies like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Psych, and Archer have long been ignored.

Al Pacino has the title role in HBO's "Phil Spector," but the movie belongs to Helen Mirren as defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden.
This fictionalized take on music industry legend Spector's first trial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson is told through Kenney Baden's eyes, becoming the story of a lawyer uncovering reasonable doubts where everyone else sees guilt. That gives writer-director David Mamet's film the unavoidable air of an apology for Spector -- a perhaps overly simplistic reading that the shallow film doesn't do much to counteract.
It's hard to say if the willful exclusion of some of the more damning evidence against Spector is a product of a sympathetic filmmaker or simply in keeping with a story told from Kenney Baden's point of view. But Mamet does at least one thing to create reasonable doubt that his goal was to misinform viewers: The film opens with...

Al Pacino and Helen Mirren are so convincing as the freaky music producer and his defense attorney that by the end of HBO's "Phil Spector," it's likely you would vote to acquit, based on reasonable doubt.
And that's with the knowledge that Spector is in prison and has a gun fetish and a violent history.
David Mamet's film, premiering Sunday, March 24, unfolds in 2007, before Spector's first trial. It was the second trial that resulted in Spector's sentence of 19 years to life for the 2003 murder of Lana Clarkson, an actress.
In this, Pacino becomes Spector, uncannily inhabiting the man who was born within four months of him and also raised in the Bronx. The two did not know each other, though they apparently met at a party, where someone took a photo of the two.
"We have a look on our faces that we don't know each other," Pacino tells Zap2it.

Chicago – With the larger-than-life acting tics that have invaded most of Al Pacino’s performances in the last twenty years, it seemed inevitable that the actor was the only person who could possibly play a notable loon like Phil Spector. In tonight’s HBO movie named after the legendary producer, Pacino chews the scenery as one would expect but it’s Helen Mirren who steals the piece from the Oscar winner. Both actors are great and Mamet’s gift with dialogue remains intact but the plotting and choice of storytelling in “Phil Spector” makes for a final product that doesn’t make enough of a statement or tell us much about its title subject.
Television Rating: 3.0/5.0

In the week leading up to tonight’s premiere of the HBO original movie Phil Spector, the pre-release publicity has all been orchestrated around quotes from the film’s writer-director, David Mamet, claiming that the movie is not a docudrama, that it parts ways with reality — and, in Mamet’s own words, that it is “not about Phil Spector.” The film opens with a title that claims: This is a work of fiction. It’s not “based on a true story.” Got it? What we’re about to watch is so made up that it’s not even related to reality.

The HBO original movie Phil Spector — a fictional account written by playwright David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross) — explores the relationship between Phil Spector (Al Pacino) and defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden (Helen Mirren), who represented Spector during his 2007 trial for the killing of actress Lana Clarkson in 2003. Mamet examines the complicated personality that Phil Spector embodies: a brilliant but eccentric music producer who revolutionized pop music in the 1960s, and who in the years leading up to the murder trial lived as a virtual recluse in a mock castle in suburban Los Angeles. Phil Spector premieres Sunday, [...]...

New York — Much to his surprise, Al Pacino learned that once upon a time he met the legendary music producer Phil Spector, whom he now plays in a new HBO film.
He had no memory of it, "but somebody showed me a picture of me and him on the Internet," Pacino laughs. "It was at some event or party, and we're both looking into the camera, two guys who do not want to be photographed. Since he had mostly worked behind the scenes, I didn't know who he was, and he looked like he didn't know who I was."
That was then, whenever that was. Now, spurring after-the-fact speculation, this forgotten encounter serves Pacino as a fitting first step into the character he captures for "Phil Spector." (It premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. Edt.)

Victims' rights groups fear that David Mamet movie will question music producer's murder conviction
Four years ago the Wall of Sound music producer Phil Spector was convicted of murdering B-movie actress Lana Clarkson at his Los Angeles castle home. Many believe Clarkson's death was a tragedy waiting to happen – Spector was well known for terrorising women, and musicians, with guns – but the guilty verdict was a surprise in a town where celebrities with far stronger evidence against them typically walk free.
Now a new HBO-produced film to be broadcast next Sunday, Phil Spector, has sparked a row between victims' rights groups and those, like the film-makers, who believe the evidence against the producer did not rise to the threshold of "beyond reasonable doubt".
Al Pacino, who stars as Spector, has revealed that, while he was undecided about Spector's guilt, David Mamet, the movie's writer and director, was certain of his innocence.

HBO Film has released the first trailer for their new original movie, Phil Spector. The movie was directed by David Mamet and stars Al Pacino sporting all kinds of crazy hairstyles that Spector has had over the years. Pacino has never looked so strange. I don't see Phil Spector, I just see Pacino wearing some ridiculous wigs.
Spector was a record producer famous for developing projects with a heavily layered "Wall of Sound." He was involved with releases from The Ramones, The Righteous Brothers, and The Beatles, among many others. Unfortunately, things ended badly.
The movie revolves around Spector as he was tried and convicted of the murder of actress Lana Clarkson for which he is currently incarcerated.

Pacino plays the title role in the TV movie written and directed by David Mamet focusing on the music producing icon's trial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. Mirren plays defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden, who -- judging by the trailer -- struggles with uncertainty over her client's guilt or innocence.
Consider Mirren an early frontrunner for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries, though Pacino is likely to face stiff competition from HBO's other high-profile movie due this spring: Steven Soderbergh's Liberace bio-pic "Behind the Candelabra" starring Michael Douglas, Matt Damon and even more jaw-dropping wigs.
"Phil Spector" is set to premiere March 24 on HBO. Watch the trailer below:...

HBO's upcoming TV movie, Phil Spector, will premiere on March 24th, and now you can check out the film's intense first trailer, which finds Al Pacino tapping into every facet of legendary producer's crazy brilliance: shooting off guns in the studio, writing songs during trial prep and spewing lines like, "First time you got felt up, guess what? You were listening to one of my songs!" There is also a whole lot of hair. Written and directed by David Mamet (who worked with Pacino previously on Glengarry Glen Ross), the...

It’s one of the most famous cases in Hollywood history: Music producer Phil Spector was accused of the second-degree murder of Lana Clarkson in 2003. After a 2007 hung jury, he was found guilty in 2009 and is currently in prison. Now, the true story is coming to HBO with an all-star cast. An incredibly-similar-looking Al Pacino tackles the title role of Spector, and Helen Mirren plays his attorney, Linda Kenney Baden.

In the later stages of his career, Al Pacino has found a home playing elderly tabloid fixtures. He appeared as Dr. Jack Kevorkian in the HBO film "You Don't Know Jack," was recently cast as Joe Paterno in a movie about the Penn State sex scandal and also stars as Phil Spector in the HBO film "Phil Spector." A three-point guide to this first glimpse of Al Pacino's portrayal of the record producer in the upcoming biopic
HBO has released a still from its David Mamet directed biopic Phil Spector, which is set to air in the Us in March. What can we glean from the photo?
1. Pacino's hair-raising performance
Although he was on trial for the murder of B-movie actor Lana Clarkson, Phil Spector was most certainly guilty of follicle abuse from the moment he walked into the courtroom in 2005. This early style – let's call it "Krusty The Clown's matronly aunt" – was followed by "minor boy-band member" and then "Princess Diana". It's lovingly recreated here using numerous cans of hairspray, underwiring and carefully hidden scaffolding. Tony Montana, one of Pacino's greatest creations, would surely have approved of the risky 'do.
2. Al's sartorial stunner

The teaser doesn’t give us any footage of the upcoming film, just images of records shattering while we hear bits and pieces of dialogue. Pasadena, Calif. -- Al Pacino said Friday that he decided not to meet famed record producer and convicted killer Phil Spector before portraying him in an HBO movie – only to find he already had.

Al Pacino is playing legendary music producer -- and convicted murderer -- Phil Spector in a movie for HBO, but he doesn't claim to have much insight into who Spector really is.
That's because, according to him, he's not playing a strictly biographical version of Spector, but rather a character as conceived by "Phil Spector" writer and director David Mamet.
"I wouldn't put myself in a position to talk about who he was, since I played him as what I believe David Mamet wrote and how I believed to interpret him," Pacino said Friday (Jan. 4) at the TV Critics Association press tour. "It's hard to make that kind of statement about a person you don't know and who has been fictionalized."

When David Mamet’s Phil Spector premieres in the spring, viewers should not expect precise impersonations of the legendary music producer and his defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden. “It’s a strange amalgamation of imagination and reality,” noted Oscar winner Helen Mirren, who was on hand Friday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour to plug the HBO film in which she stars as Baden. To hear her and co-star Al Pacino tell it, the goal with this effort was not to impersonate the real-life characters but rather to use them as inspiration in telling a fictionalized story about the

Thanks to a prematurely leaked 2013 preview that has since been yanked offline, it has been around long enough for savvy folks to capture snaps of upcoming programming, and it looks like David Mamet's Phil Spector movie is finally arriving, with Al Pacino in the lead. Yes, that Al Pacino. Shot all the way back in the summer of 2011, it's not clear why the usual quick turnaround for projects at the network has evaded this effort, but nonetheless, it's one we're looking forward to. Penned by Mamet, the film will chronicle the relationship between Spector and his defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden (Helen Mirren), with Jeffrey Tambor playing Bruce Cutler, another member of the defense team. Spector was put on trial in 2007 for the murder of actress/model Lana Clarkson. The first trial ended in a mistrial, but in the second he was found guilty and sentenced to 19 years to life in prison.
