Forty years after topping the charts with I Love Rock’n’Roll’s snarling menace, Jett is still rocking out. She talks about the sexism she faced, nurturing today’s female stars and her dad sneaking into her early gigs
When Joan Jett was 13 years old, she had her first lesson on the electric guitar her parents had given her for Christmas. “I went in there all excited and said to the teacher: ‘I wanna play rock’n’roll,’” she says. “And he said to me: ‘Girls don’t play rock’n’roll. Let me teach you [the folk song] On Top of Old Smokey instead.’” Jett never went back for a second lesson – instead, she bought a book and taught herself to play. Robbie Robertson’s plaintive “Once Were Brothers,” from his Sinematic album, shares its title with Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band, a documentary about Robertson’s life and often wild times with the group that made him famous.
The film opens in New York and L.A. on February 21 and nationally on February 28.
“I didn’t write the song for the movie and the movie wasn’t being made around the song,” Robertson told Rolling Stone last summer. “They just drifted together at a certain point and it felt right.

Blink-182 tackle aging and time with impressive brevity on their new song, “Generational Divide,” which clocks in at just 50 seconds. The track arrives with a video, directed by Kevin Kerslake, in which the band performs the song in a small room plastered with concert fliers.
“Generational Divide” is a burst driving guitars and hardcore drums, with Mark Hoppus and Matt Skiba teaming for some quintessential early-2000s emo cascading vocals. “Is it better, is it better now?/Are we better now, are we better now?” Hoppus sings before Skiba piles on,...

The proto-punk icon comes over as generous and self-aware in Kevin Kerslake’s documentary, which ropes in starry friends like Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop
It is an odd but all-too-common phenomenon that cinematic biographies about musical stars often leave the viewer liking the subject less as a person, sometimes in direct proportion to how much he or she liked the subject’s work beforehand. It’s pleasing to report that’s not the case with Bad Reputation, a career-long retrospective devoted to rock star Joan Jett, who comes across here every bit as funny, smart, self-aware and generous as you could hope for. Ageing gracefully now that she’s into her seventh decade, Jett reflects with honesty on her career highs and lows, from her early days as a founder member of proto-punk girl-group the Runaways to the solo-star years of her hits I Love Rock ’n’ Roll and...

Nicknamed the godmother of Punk Rock, Joan Jett shot to fame as a founding member of The Runaways, a rock band made up of Jett, Sandy West, Jackie Fox, Lita Ford and Cherie Currie, a group of precocious and in-your-face teenage girls who were set to take the late 70s rock world by storm. In his new film Bad Reputation, music video director turned documentarian Kevin Kerslake attempts to shine a light on the legend of Jett and the ups and downs she suffered throughout her rocky career, and how she came back from the brink to become one of the most iconic female rock stars of all time.
Discovered at 15, Joan Jett cut an impressive figure amongst the remnants of the deeply uncool hippy era when she and the rest of The Runways broke onto a scene which didn’t know what to do with them. Exploding onto the...

As much as we may love Kristen Stewart’s brooding take on Joan Jett from 2010’s eponymous The Runaways biopic, nothing compares to the real deal. The authorized documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and charts Jett’s rise to rock ‘n roll royalty, including the rampant sexism she and her band experienced. In addition to interviews with Jett and her frequent producer and songwriter Kenny Laguna, “Bad Reputation” also features an eclectic mix of her admirers, such as Billie Joe Armstrong, Miley Cyrus, Debbie Harry, Nikki Haley, Iggy Pop, Kristen Stewart, and Pete Townshend.
Directed by Kevin Kerslake (“As I Am: The Life and Times of DJ Am”) and written by Joel Marcus, the film promises a wealth of archival footage and a wild jaunt through the blossoming ’70s punk scene. As Magnolia’s official synopsis reads: “The theme is clear: even though people tried...

It's that vocals that always gets you first – the snarl that comes through Joan Jett's singing, sandpaper-rough around the edges and 100-percent fuck-you attitude. Yes, she's a first-class rhythm guitarist (listen the opening of the Runaways' "You Drive Me Wild" and tell us that's not gloriously, gut-punchingly rifftastic). But that voice ... that's what rock & roll sounds like. Seductive. Jagged. Rebellious. Like her vocal cords are going to jump out of her throat and kick your ass.

Fortunately, for Kerslake at least, Am was also a "digital packrat," and his laptop contained thousands of archived files including songs and pictures. Most importantly, Am "delivered a 40-minute autobiographical speech on his eleventh sober birthday," which highlighted the events he felt had formed his character and stood out most in his mind, from high times to "cesspits of profit and corruption and the teen rehab industry." Kerslake was able to listen to this speech because Am "stuck a recorder in his pocket," so he "followed [Am's] lead" and this story became the.

During a panel at Edm Biz about the Grammy Awards and the Recording Academy’s non-profit arm, MusiCares, documentary filmmaker Kevin Kerslake premiered a trailer for his forthcoming film about the late DJ Am titled As I Am: The Life and Times of DJ Am. DJ Am (given name Adam Goldstein) passed away in 2009, and had been very open about his own struggles with addiction, his process of recovery and fight for his own sobriety. Appropriately, a portion of proceeds from the documentary will go to the DJ Am Memorial Fund to be channeled to MusiCares’ addiction and recovery

Looking to stay in this weekend but still feel like being part of one of one hell of a party? Through a new partnership with Prescreen, Paste is proud to offer its readers a free streaming rental of our Paste/Prescreen Pick of the Month, Kevin Kerslake’s The Electric Daisy Carnival Experience. Every genre of music has its own culture surrounding it. Rock has arena concerts, blues has hole in the wall clubs, and so forth. Similarly, each genre has their Mecca: that annual concert that is the end all be all of places to be if you love a certain style of music. For electro/techno/house fans, there’s no better place to be on the last weekend in June than the Electric Daisy Carnival, which has become something of a cultural phenomenon in recent years as its popularity has shot through the roof. What started as a day-long event expanded into two nights and now, as of 2011, three. Three nights of incredible electronic music from the likes of Deadmau5, Moby, Afrojack, Duck Sauce, Fedde Le Grand, Kaskade, and Mstrkrft. To document the culture that has risen up around the Edc, Kevin Kerslake filmed Electric Daisy Carnival Experience, and as concert films go,...

Today on indieWIRE, we told you what not to miss in theaters this month, we present the trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's cheap-looking horror bore 'Twixt,' and much more.
Most Diy distributors would love to be in Edward Bates' position: He's a first-time distributor who's handling a film with an enormous, passionate and plugged-in fan base. He has theaters selling out before the film even opens. There's one problem: Audiences are so eager to see Kevin Kerslake's 'Electric Daisy Carnival Experience,' a documentary about the culture of electronic dance music, that theaters are scared to screen it. More here.

Hollywoodnews.com: Break out your glow sticks, kids — and your riot gear apparently — because “The Electric Daisy Carnival” is coming to your town.
Director Kevin Kerslake’s film about the annual rave and electronic music festival features helicopter footage of the event as well as backstage interview with electronic artists such as David Guetta, Steve Aoki and DJ Kaskade.
This past Wednesday at the film’s premiere, police in riot gear fought off crowds flocking to see Kaskade perform. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kaskade invited fans via Twitter to watch him play despite the fact it was an invite-only screening.
As a result of the riot, Regal and AMC theater chains will not be screening the documentary, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Regardless, “The Electric Daisy Carnival Experience” opens nationwide August 4.

This coming September will mark the 20-year anniversary of Nirvana's landmark album, "Nevermind." At the time the little known band had released one album, "Bleach," which didn't even chart, and no one could have imagined their sophomore effort would succeed so wildly. Four months after it's release, it surpassed albums by U2 and Michael Jackson on the Billboard charts to sit at number one. And their teen slacker anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit," catapulted the band into worldwide fame.
Nirvana left the stage as abruptly as they had arrived, when Kurt Cobain committed suicide with a shotgun in 1994, but "Nevermind" lives on, now having sold more than 30 million copies.
To commemorate the 20th year, and make you feel better about being so old, Universal Music is releasing a 4-cd/1-dvd Super Deluxe Edition of "Nevermind." Due out a couple days before the original release, on September 20th (September 19th in...

Punk rock band Rise Against last released a new CD (Appeal to Reason) in October of 2008, but that doesn't mean they haven't been busy and keeping their fans in the forefront of their minds. Which is why today they released an uncensored version of the video for their song "Re-Education (Through Labor)".
For frontman Tim McIlrath, creating connections to the band’s audience is of paramount importance — regardless of size, scenes, or musical styles.
“It’s still about reaching people, putting what we’re giving into these people, making them think and challenge the ways of thought, creating conversation and dialogue and putting new ideas forth for people to consider,” says McIlrath. “And when you have a bigger fanbase, that’s even more fun to do because all of a sudden your voice is louder. Now you have a bigger bullhorn than you actually have. It’s exciting and fun...

J.G. Ballard, who passed away back in April, is thought by many to be one of the most groundbreaking science-fiction authors to ever live... and yet, the vast majority of people have still never even heard of the guy. A lot of his books are now out of print and hard to find, although I think he has a bigger following in the U.K. than in North America. Up until this point, only a few of his stories have ever been adapted for the big screen, most notably Crash, which was directed by David Cronenberg, and Spielberg's Empire of the Sun, based on Ballard's non-science-fiction novel about growing up in Japan during WWII. Well, it looks like a couple more of his books are finally on their way to becoming movies, and at least one of them should be in good hands. High Rise is a dark story about...

Ugh. Ugh. Yes, my first and second words. Ballard is hands down my favorite author and I don't want any adaptations sullied by big budget Hollywood crap. Don't get me wrong, I like Jackson, but any Ballard crossover deserves a more.. independent spirit.

A music video for Rise Against's new song called "Re-Education (Through Labor)" has been dropped. Assisted by Kevin Kerslake, the music video shows the band playing in an underground bunker with a gang of motorcyclists.
When the video begins, a famous quote from John F. Kennedy appears on the screen. "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable," the statement read. As the video progresses, it captures the bikers riding around and dropping people in various locations. The closing scene shows the row of bikers watching the city exploding in the night.
"Re-Education" will appear in the band's upcoming fifth studio album, "Appeal to Reason", which is due for release on October 7. "The chorus, it's definitely taking and looking at where we get our information from and who's telling us the information and who's right and who's wrong," their lead singer, Tim McIlrath, explains the concept of their upcoming effort.

Punk rock band Rise Against are now in the middle of filming a music video in support of their first single called "Re-Education (Through Labor)". The song, which supposedly speaks of the human rights and labor violations occurring in modern day China, will appear in the band's upcoming fifth studio album, "Appeal to Reason", which is due for release on October 7.
The music video is confirmed to be directed by Kevin Kerslake, the same guy who helped Papa Roach making their "To Be Loved" music video. The preview of the video shows that the band's video will feature some dangerous stunts from several motocross racers.
Furthermore, the band reveal that in the creative process of making their next installment, they don't make any specific plan and let the ideas flow naturally. "There's no plan, we don't map it out, we don't decide on a direction. We just kind of let it happen real naturally.
