The Doctor Who press juggernaut materialized in New York last week, bringing with it leading stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson. The iconic, long-running BBC science-fiction show about a time-and-space traveling alien debuts its latest season on streamer Disney+ on Friday.
Gatwa, who grew up in Scotland after leaving Rwanda as a child, is already known for playing Eric Effiong in Sex Education (Netflix) and as one of the many Kens in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023). Lesser known internationally is Gibson, who turns 20 in June. In the U.K., the actor made a name for herself in the television soap opera, Coronation Street (which is even longer-running than Doctor Who).
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the pair to discuss the opening two episodes of their first season (which release at 7 p.m. on the streamer). There’s no spoilers below, but do come back Saturday for the second part of this interview,...

Millie Gibson is joining the cast of the BBC’s “Doctor Who.”
She will play Ruby Sunday, the new companion of the Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa.
Gibson is best known for starring in British soap opera “Coronation Street” in the series regular role of Kelly Neelan from 2019 to 2022. Her other screen credits include the ITV drama “Butterfly,” the BBC drama “Love, Lies and Records” and the Cbbc children’s series “Jamie Johnson.”
“Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion,” Gibson said. “It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

I thought my days complaining about queerbaiting in beloved genre shows died when Tumblr removed Nsfw content, but the completion of the "Doctor Who" centenary special has me coming out of retirement to criticize the blatant queerbaiting injected into the relationship between The Doctor and her companion Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill). As the first female Doctor in the show's decades-long history, Jodie Whittaker's run with writing by Chris Chibnall has been ... complicated, to put it kindly.
In her review of "The Power of the Doctor," our resident Whovian expert Hoai-Tran Bui described the Chibnall/Whittaker era as being "mired in clunky writing, nonsensical plots, half-realized characters, and empty spectacle" all while "missing the heart that made those kinds of quirks bearable." Whittaker and her historic first female Doctor deserved better, as did the queer fans who were seemingly promised genuine representation for the very first time, only to have...

Doctor Who Series 13 Episode 3 Review
Warning: this Doctor Who: Flux review contains spoilers.
Well, I wasn’t expecting that.
I’d initially intended to start this review comparing ‘Once, Upon Time’to the deliberately ambiguous ‘Listen’, the Peter Capaldi serial that left whether the ‘monster’ even existed up to the audience. Then I thought, no, it’s actually more like ‘Can You Hear Me?’, co-written by Chris Chibnall and featuring the same kind of nightmare-slash-memory scenarios for the companions, underscored by a pair of creepy immortal villains.
After more consideration, though, those comparisons are mostly surface-level. For one thing, although a Weeping Angel gets tossed into the mix and their very nature tends to invoke a lot of jump scares, this episode isn’t particularly frightening. It is incredibly dreamlike, though. That combination of randomly flitting between different places and times of day without being fully aware that you’re doing so,...

“Doctor Who” stars Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole will be leaving the Jodie Whittaker-led series after its upcoming New Year’s Day special, “Revolution of the Daleks,” BBC America revealed in an interview with the cast and showrunner Chris Chibnall Monday.
“Well as the Doctor I will say that the fam as a four is no more,” Whittaker said, when asked about the “rumors flying around” about this being the “end of the fam,” referring to The Doctor (played by Whittaker), Graham O’Brien (Walsh), Ryan Sinclair (Cole) and Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill).
Per BBC America, the “Doctor Who” holiday special “Revolution of the Daleks” picks up where Season 12 left off, with the 13th Doctor locked away in an alien prison and Yaz, Ryan and Graham far away on Earth and having to carry on with their lives without her. Doctor Who fans are used to a long wait between seasons, but the Covid-19 pandemic may mean it’ll be some time before we get new episodes. This is because, as is the case with much of the global entertainment industry, the BBC has suspended the shoots of all its scripted programming. Doctor Who is now unlikely to go back before the cameras until the summer (and that’s at the earliest), which may mean we won’t see new episodes until mid-2021. But there’s at least one ray of light for fans: this year’s holiday special, “Revolution of the Daleks,” is still on schedule.
Confirmation of its status came from star Mandip Gill, who plays companion Yasmin Khan on the show. In an interview with Radio Times, she said:

Tribeca Studios is dipping its toe into podcasting in partnership with iHeartMedia, teaming up on a new series called Fierce about formidable women from history.
The branded entertainment and production arm of Tribeca Enterprises — parent of the flagship film festival — is launching Fierce today (May 6). New episodes post weekly through June 17 on iHeartRadio, Spotify, Apple and other platforms.
The series was conceived to shed light “on the fierce women to whom history has not given due weight,” Tribeca said. In each episode, journalist and author Jo Piazza tells the life story of an historical figure then connects the legacy of each subjects to a modern woman she interviews.
Episode 1, Clementine Paddleford: The Woman who Revolutionized Food Writing, celebrates a forgotten food journalist who elevated the craft from the mundane to an art form and taught herself to fly a plane so she could report on food across the country and around the world.

British science-fiction series “Doctor Who” has made history by introducing the first actor of color to play the Doctor: Jo Martin, who’s also only the second woman to be cast in the series’ lead role.

Martin is introduced as a character named Ruth Clayton, who is later revealed to be a previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor.
Fans weren’t entirely sure if Martin’s appearance meant what it implied, but series boss Chris Chibnall has confirmed that she is the real deal. Speaking to The Mirror, Chibnall said, “The important thing to say is: She is definitively The Doctor. There’s not a...

The inaugural season for Jodie Whittaker’s thirteenth Doctor has been a huge success for the BBC. Audience numbers were way up on the previous seasons of Doctor Who, people seemed to respond well to the new cast and showrunner Chris Chibnall’s decision to avoid delving too deep into the show’s complex lore appears to have paid off.
Now, as the cast begins shooting next year’s season 12 and season 11 hits Blu-ray, the gang’s been looking back on their favorite episodes. Speaking to the Express, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole, who play companions Yasmin Khan and Ryan Sinclair, have explained their picks for best of the season.

Doctor Who season 11 has been back on our screens for a few weeks now and overall, the relaunch of the show has gone down a treat. Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor appears to be practically universally beloved and her team of best friends have been well received, too. There’s just one thing, though. Due to the majority of the cast being from the North of England, viewers not used to the accent are having trouble understanding them.
While speaking with Stylist, Mandip Gill – who plays Sheffield born-and-raised Yasmin Khan, a police officer now traveling with the Doctor – explained that she’d been forewarned that American audiences may have issues keeping up with her Northern accent. However, the actress pointed out that she doesn’t see the problem as there are other Northern English celebrities that Us viewers will already be familiar with.

However, the actress pointed out that she doesn’t see the problem as there are other Northern English celebrities that Us viewers will already be familiar with.

In its five decades careening through the cosmos and the popular imagination, Doctor Who has given us plenty of philosophies to choose from: “Go forward in all your beliefs.” “There is no point in being grown up if you can’t be childish sometimes.” “We’re all stories in the end.” “Bananas are good.” But on yesterday’s Season 11 premiere, the latest incarnation of the time-traveling, galaxy-hopping, species-saving, face-changing Time Lord gave voice to what is perhaps the show’s most enduring philosophy: “We’re all capable of the most incredible change.

“Doctor Who” premiered its groundbreaking new season on Sunday, October 7, during a simulcast all around the world, but star Jodie Whittaker watched the premiere with fans at Madison Square Garden during New York Comic Con at 1:45pm Eastern. Just two hours before that she discussed the new season and its significance with press at the Javits Center. She’s the first woman ever to play the title time traveler in the show’s 55-year history. Listen to her discuss her historic role in the podcast above.
Whittaker loved the “energy” in the script when she first read it. “[Showrunner Chris Chibnall] says I brought it, but for me it bounced off the page,” she admits. “This is all the things I love about playing. It’s movement. It’s jumping from thought to thought but having a clear purpose. It’s hopeful. It’s enjoying the detail in an epic scale. It’s all those things,...

The anticipation for Doctor Who Season 11 Episode 1 was the kind you get before jumping from a plane for the first time. Whether it goes well or not, you won't ever again be able to say that you've never taken that risk.
Personally, I think that this jump went well. Very, very well.

Every time The Doctor regenerates, we can expect a refreshing of the series, the character, and even the Tardis. Each Doctor has, historically, brought along His own version of the Sonic Screwdriver, His own wardrobe, and His own preferred snack menu.
In introducing the first female version of The Doctor, they've rewritten even these iconic accessories. The Thirteenth Doctor has lost her Tardis momentarily (not a new thing since the Third Doctor's Tardis was broken for his entire stint) And her screwdriver.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Doctor Who” Season 11, Episode 1, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth.”]
Jodie Whittaker bursts out of the gate with vitality, humor, and grace in her official “Doctor Who” debut, giving an engaging performance that does the Time Lord pedigree proud. After 50 years of men in the role, the Doctor is now a woman, but viewers tuning in for the first time to witness Whittaker’s historic assumption of the Doctor’s mantle will find no barrier to entry. Her regeneration has gone wonky, so she and the audience are figuring everything out together. She’s forgotten everyday words, mixes up common sensations, and doesn’t even know her own name. Nevertheless, she is undeterred in her calling as humanity’s champion. “When people need help, I never refuse,” she declares.
Goofy and curious, commanding and contemplative, Thirteen is already well on her way to demonstrating the complex emotional makeup that is the Doctor.

‘Doctor Who’ Season 11 Trailer: Jodie Whittaker Is Starting Again, Sonic Screwdriver in Hand (Video)
The (new) Doctor is in.
BBC America released the official trailer for the upcoming season of “Doctor Who” Thursday, showing new lead Jodie Whittaker in all her badass glory. Whittaker, as fans already know, will play the series’ first ever female Time Lord — a part that is not to be taken lightly. But based on the one-minute preview, she was “born for this.”
Peter Capaldi portrayed the 12th Doctor on the long-running series, giving up his sonic screw driver and keys to the Tardis during last year’s Christmas Special after making it known earlier in the year that he’d be exiting.

The news that Jodie Whittaker would be taking on the role of the 13th Doctor has been out for some time, but every new glimpse of her take on the iconic role seems to prove that gender has nothing to do with adventures through space and time.
Season 11 will be a fresh start for the series, bringing in not just Whittaker but incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall (succeeding Steven Moffat in the role) and a whole new cast. In the new trailer released below, we get glimpses of action, explosions, monsters, and the Doctor’s new companions, who have no problem pointing out who exactly is in charge.
Along with the trailer, the BBC released official descriptions for the first two episodes of the season, as follows:

It’s now just a couple of weeks until the Thirteenth Doctor finally – finally! – makes her proper debut when Doctor Who season 11 arrives this October. The BBC has been notoriously spoiler-phobic in the run-up to the Jodie Whittaker era, but finally, some plot details for the new batch of episodes are starting to trickle out.
As previously revealed, the special hour-long season premiere is titled “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” and comes from the pen of showrunner Chris Chibnall, with direction by Jamie Childs. Furthermore, we now have this short synopsis to tease what’s in store for the new Doc – in short, she’s going to suffer from a bout of post-regeneration amnesia.

One of the many ways that the upcoming eleventh season of Doctor Who will revamp the show is by introducing three new companions for Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, as opposed to the usual one or two. Things are going to get pretty crowded in the Tardis, then, but we’ve heard that the characters will develop a “family” dynamic throughout the season.
While speaking with Digital Spy, Who newcomers Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole – who play Yasmin Khan and Ryan Sinclair, respectively – spoke about what we can expect from their dynamic with the Time Lord and fellow companion Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh). First off, Cole teased that things are chaotic to start with before the four time travelers grow closer, saying:

Most of the chatter about Doctor Who season 11 concerns Jodie Whittaker’s first female Doctor, but what about her companions? You’ve probably noticed that she’s set to have three of them, an unusually high amount of friends for the Time Lord to squeeze into the Tardis. So why was this the direction the production team went in?
Well, Digital Spy spoke to new showrunner Chris Chibnall and he explained that each of the three companions represents a different entry point for the audience, with the hopes that everyone will find someone in the Tardis to relate to.
“I love Doctor Who as a big, popular, mainstream, accessible show. So I wanted to make sure that every member of the audience felt they had a relatable character, an access point. Hopefully it means that the show can resonate with the broadest possible audience.”

Doctor Who made waves when Jodie Whittaker was cast as the Thirteenth Doctor, the first time an actress had played the face-changing Time Lord in 50 years of the sci-fi institution. As expected, this started a conversation about opening the door for other iconic male roles being recast with a woman, too.
The obvious comparison is that other 50-something year old British hero, James Bond. While the part of the super secret agent is much more traditionally masculine than the Doctor, there’s still a lot of talk about it happening. In fact, longtime series producer Barbara Broccoli has even said that it’s entirely possible the role could be played by a black actor or actress next time.

Andrew Embiricos, grandson of Rita Hayworth and Prince Aly Khan, was found dead of an apparent suicide at his West 17th Street apartment in Chelsea, New York City, on Sunday, Dec. 4. Embiricos was 25. Andrew Ali Aga Khan Embiricos was the son of economist and shipping heir Basil Embiricos and Princess Yasmin Aga Khan. He was also the nephew of Prince Karim, Aga Khan IV. As such, Embiricos was purportedly a direct descendant of the prophet Mohammed. His body, lying face up in bed with a bag over his head, was found Sunday evening by a friend, Aaron Edwards, who then called 911. An autopsy is to be performed. Because the handsome Embiricos had appeared in amateur gay sex video clips on X-Tube, New York and gay tabloids have gone on to claim that his death wasn't actually suicide, but an experimentation with autoerotic asphyxiation gone wrong. Those are the same sensational...

Andrew Embiricos, the 25-year-old grandson of screen legend Rita Hayworth, was found dead in his New York apartment on Sunday (Dec. 4) in what police are describing as an apparent suicide.
Embiricos was discovered lying face-up in his bed with a plastic bag over his head. The New York Post describes him as a "troubled party boy who infamously starred in amateur Internet porn videos." But, according to People, Embiricos also received a degree in psychology from Fordham University and was active in Alzheimer's research, the disease his grandmother died from in 1987.
Embiricos was the son of Hayworth's daughter, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, and Greek shipping heir Basil Embiricos. He struggled with drug addiction and apparently had a history of suicide attempts.
"He was always a sweet charming guy," the Village Voice's Michael Musto told People.
